Project description:Secondary-level healthcare professionals, mainly rheumatologists and orthopedic surgeons, were invited to participate in an online survey questionnaire to assess knowledge and compliance with osteoporosis management guidelines and strategies, as well as self-reported quality of care. About 51% of the participants admit that they do not implement specific guidelines for the management of osteoporosis in their standard practice and depend on their experience and their clinical judgments. Moreover, although a good percentage (58%) had satisfactory knowledge levels in domains on the risk of osteoporotic fractures and investigations of osteoporosis, 47.5% of the participants did not score satisfactorily in questions on pharmacotherapy, especially for those patients at high risk for fractures.IntroductionA recently published study demonstrated a treatment gap among those eligible for osteoporosis therapy in Egypt of about 82.1% in postmenopausal women and 100% in men. The current survey aimed to address some of the factors that may contribute to this wide gap.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study of secondary care healthcare professionals (both physicians and orthopedic surgeons) who were invited to complete an online questionnaire, which gathered information about physicians' socio-demographic data, knowledge, and compliance with osteoporosis management guidelines and strategies, as well as self-reported quality of care. Additionally, a knowledge score was calculated for all the participants.ResultsA good percentage (58%) had a satisfactory knowledge level in domains on the risk of osteoporotic fractures and investigations of osteoporosis; however, 47.5% did not score satisfactorily in questions on pharmacotherapy, especially for those patients at high risk for fractures.ConclusionsThis work has identified some of the barriers to implementing guidelines for osteoporosis and fragility fracture management. In the meantime, it highlights the urgency of intensifying efforts to develop the knowledge and attitude of the healthcare professionals dealing with this condition in Egypt.

Project description:IntroductionThe use of medication therapy management (MTM) is a proven method for reducing medication errors. MTM services rely heavily on pharmacists as service providers, particularly in community health centers (CHCs). Thus, understanding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of MTM among pharmacists in CHCs is crucial to the strategy for the implementation of MTM program in Indonesia. This study aimed to assess the level of KAP regarding MTM among pharmacists working at CHCs and its associated factors and investigate pharmacists' perceptions of the barriers and facilitators of MTM provision in the future.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was conducted. The respondents were pharmacists working at CHCs in 28 provinces in Indonesia. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the responses. Demographic differences were determined using Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests, and associations were identified using multivariable ordinal regression for knowledge and multivariable logistic regression for attitude and practice. Barriers and facilitators were determined from codes and categories of frequency derived from pharmacists' responses to the open-ended questions.ResultsOf the 1,132 pharmacists, 74.9% had a high level of knowledge, 53.6% had a positive attitude, and 57.9% had a positive practice toward MTM. Gender, practice settings, province of CHCs, years of practice, and experience in MTM services were factors associated with the KAP level. Respondents perceived that the chronic disease conditions in Indonesia, MTM service features, and current practices were facilitators of MTM provision. The lack of interprofessional collaboration, staff, pharmacist knowledge, patient cooperation, facilities/drug supply/documentation systems, stakeholder support, and patient compliance were the most common barriers to MTM implementation in the future.ConclusionMost of the pharmacists had high knowledge of MTM; however, only half had positive attitudes and practices toward MTM. Information about factors associated with the KAP level suggests that direct involvement is essential to improve pharmacists' understanding and view of MTM. Pharmacists also perceived barriers to the MTM provision in the future, such as interprofessional and pharmacist-patient relationships. A training program is needed to improve the KAP of MTM and develop skills for collaborating with other healthcare professionals and communicating with patients.

Project description:BackgroundVaccination of healthcare workers (HCWs) is pivotal in decreasing the incidence of contagious infections in hospital settings. In this study, we assessed the knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding HCWs' recommended vaccines among medical students and interns in Egypt.MethodsA multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured, pilot-tested, and self-administered questionnaire among Egyptian medical students and interns. We invited 1332 participants to our survey using a systematic random sampling that included participants across nine medical schools in Egypt during the 2021-2022 academic year.ResultsOut of 1332 participants, 1141 completed our questionnaire with a response rate of 85.7%. Overall, 43% of the participants had intermediate knowledge (knew 2-3 HCWs' recommended vaccines). Furthermore, 36.7% had received a booster dose of at least one of the HCWs' recommended vaccines over the last 10 years, with only 6.1% having received all recommended vaccines. Hepatitis B vaccine was the most widely known (71%) and received (66.7%). Interns were more likely to know, receive, and recommend HCWs' recommended vaccines. The majority (> 90%) agreed that vaccination is beneficial and safe, with a median score of eight (interquartile range [IQR: Q25-Q75]: 7-9) out of ten for vaccine efficacy and eight (IQR: 7-8) for safety. However, the median score for hesitancy was five (IQR: 2-7). The most common influential and limiting factors for vaccination were scientific facts (60.1%) and fear of vaccine side effects (44.9%).ConclusionAlthough medical students in Egypt have good knowledge of and attitudes towards vaccination, there is a gap in their practices. Interventions are needed to improve vaccination uptake among medical students in Egypt.

Project description:The use of ultrasonics (US) has greatly expanded in the field of dentistry. Over the past few decades, the application of US has increased substantially in endodontics owing to the predictable prognosis and ease of operation. The objective of this survey was to determine the knowledge, practice, and attitude of US in endodontics among the general practitioners, postgraduates, and endodontists. An electronic questionnaire containing 16 questions regarding the knowledge, attitude, and practice of US in endodontics was circulated among the general dentists, postgraduates, and endodontists and the responses were collected online. Data were statistically examined using IBM SPSS software. A total of 202 dentists (general dentists = 92, endodontists = 77, and postgraduates = 33) participated in the survey. Eighty-nine percent of them were aware of the use of US in endodontics, 36.1% of them preferred using US in the removal of pulp chamber calcifications, pulp stones, access refinement, and troughing hidden canals, and 61.4% chose <3% sodium hypochlorite for root canal irrigation with US. The cost of the ultrasonic unit and heat generation during procedures were considered the greatest limitation in using the US. The majority of the dentists were well aware of the use of US and its advantages in various endodontic procedures but they did not use it routinely in their practice. The use of US has been reported to have greatly increased the predictability of endodontic treatment.

Project description:BackgroundChronic insomnia is a common yet often overlooked issue in primary health care. This study investigated the knowledge, attitude, and practices of chronic insomnia management among general practitioners (GPs).MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was conducted among GPs providing routine care to adults with insomnia in health facilities at all levels in Sichuan Province, China. Additionally, we designed an online questionnaire that included basic information and knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding chronic insomnia management.ResultsWe included 420 GPs, 66.2% of whom were female and 58.1% were from community health service centers. Total 198 (47.1%) GPs had received specific training and only 2 GPs (0.5%) correctly answered the knowledge-related questions. Furthermore, only 44 GPs (10.5%) demonstrated excellent practice behaviors, while most GPs (70.2%) expressed high demand for training in insomnia management. Insomnia training experience was associated with higher practice scores (β = 3.318, p < 0.001).ConclusionThis study established an association and correlation between knowledge, attitude, and practice scores in treating insomnia and the sociodemographic characteristics of GPs in China. Although knowledge and practice performance in this field need to be improved, they mostly displayed a positive attitude towards insomnia management. Thus, offering continuing education opportunities to GPs would be highly beneficial.

Project description:BackgroundThis study aimed to investigate the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of the healthy general population toward cervical spondylosis.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted among healthy individuals at Peking University Third Hospital between May and December 2023, utilizing a self-designed questionnaire.ResultsA total of 506 valid questionnaires were collected, of which 276 (64.94%) were completed by females. The mean scores for knowledge, attitudes, and practices were 4.07 ± 1.24 (range: 0-8), 35.69 ± 3.67 (range: 9-45), and 27.01 ± 4.38 (range: 9-36), respectively. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that knowledge had a direct influence on both attitudes (β = 0.589, P = 0.002) and practices (β = 0.353, P = 0.020). Furthermore, attitudes had a direct effect on practices (β = 0.442, P < 0.001).ConclusionThe healthy general population demonstrated inadequate knowledge, a positive attitude, and suboptimal practices regarding cervical spondylosis. These findings highlight the need for targeted educational interventions to improve public awareness and foster healthier practices in managing cervical spondylosis.

Project description:BackgroundCounseling has a significant role in improving knowledge, attitude and practice outcomes of pregnant women towards medication use. Proper counseling thus could be beneficial to prevent any medication related misadventure during pregnancy. The present study was aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of pregnant women towards their medications, to provide counseling regarding their understanding of medication use during pregnancy and evaluate the impacts of such counseling.MethodsPre- post interventional (counseling) study was conducted at Manipal Teaching Hospital, Nepal among pregnant women who presented with complication and were prescribed at least one medication. A total of 275 pregnant women were included in the study. A structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice of pregnant women before and after counseling. The impacts of counseling were then evaluated using suitable statistical methods.ResultsOf the total participants 229 completed the post counseling survey. Majority of the participants were in the age group 20-24 (43.2%), primigravida (59.4%) and in third trimester (58.6%). Housewives comprised 61.1% of participants and majority had received a University degree (33.2%). The mean and median scores assessed before counseling showed that there was no significant difference in the KAP scores with respect to age, trimester and gravidity whereas KAP scores with respect to occupation and level of education were statistically significant. There was an increase in mean and median KAP scores after counseling and the impacts of counseling was found to be statistically significant (p = <0.001).ConclusionCounseling had a positive impact on knowledge, attitude and practice of pregnant women towards medication and thus it could be considered a suitable method to encourage safe medication during pregnancy.

Project description:BackgroundImproved chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment protocols, fortunately, increased the rates of cancer survivors over the years. However, these treatments may result in infertility or subfertility. Oncologists are considered the gateway for knowledge about cancer and its treatments' effects. Several studies showed that many oncologists do not discuss fertility preservation with their patients. This study aimed to explore the perspective of oncologists in Oman on fertility preservation.MethodsA cross-sectional study of physicians and surgeons dealing with patients with cancer was conducted from June 2021 to December 2021. A standardized and validated questionnaire was used to collect data.ResultsParticipants reported that they are knowledgeable about sperm cryopreservation and gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists use but not other methods of fertility preservation. About 94% of the participants reported that they need more knowledge about fertility preservation. More than half of the participants had never encountered cancer patients who used ovarian cryopreservation, testicular tissue cryopreservation, in vitro fertilization with embryo cryopreservation and oocyte cryopreservation. The majority (78%) agreed that discussing fertility preservation with newly diagnosed cancer patients is a high priority.ConclusionsOncologists in Oman are supportive of fertility preservation. The lack of knowledge and unavailability of well-structured fertility preservation services in Oman hinders the initiation of fertility preservation discussions.

Project description:Aim:The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice among general dentists regarding perception of dental pain in children. Materials and methods:A cross-sectional study was conducted among 208 general dentists in a dental hospital in Chennai. A self-constructed questionnaire was distributed to the dental practitioners, which comprised 23 closed-ended questions. The data were entered and analyzed for frequency and percentages by using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 21. Results:Results showed that most of the dentists (46%) treated less than five children per week and were having less than 2 years of experience (47%). Seventy one percent of the dentists felt that they did not feel prepared to identify a child with dental pain, and 57% of the dentists had less than two years of experience. Conclusion:Most of the dentists did not feel prepared to identify the children with dental pain. Measures should be introduced to train the general dental practitioners in identifying pain perception in children so as to achieve effective behavior management of children. Project description:BackgroundA pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) emerged and affected most of the world in early 2020. To inform effective public health measures we conducted a knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) survey among a Hausa Muslim society in Nigeria in March 2020.MethodsThe study is an analytic cross-sectional survey with questionnaires administered to the general population including Health Care Workers (HCW) in Kano, Nigeria. Participants were recruited by convenience sampling following informed consent. The percentage of KAP scores were categorized as good and poor. Independent predictors of good knowledge of COVID 19 were ascertained using a binary logistic regression model.ResultsThe questionnaire was administered among urban 32.8%, peri-urban dwellers 32.4%, and to online participants 34.8%. The peri-urban and urban participants were given paper questionnaires. There were 886 study participants with mean age 28.58yrs [SD:10.25] (Interquartile range [IQR]:22yrs-32yrs), males 55.4% with 57.3% having had or were in tertiary education. Most participants were students 40% and civil servants 20%. The overall mean [standard deviation (SD)] for knowledge, attitude and practice scores expressed in percentage was 65.38%[SD15.90], 71.45% [SD14.10], and 65.04% [SD17.02] respectively. Out of the respondents, 270(30.47%) had good knowledge (GK), 158(17.8%) had good attitude (GA), and 230(25.96%) had good practice (GP) using cut-off scores of 75%, 86.5%, and 75% respectively. Over 48% did not agree COVID-19 originated from animals while 60% perceived the pandemic to be due to God's punishment. Also, 36% thought it was a man-made virus. When rating fear, most respondents [63.5%] had marked fear i.e. ≥ 7 out of 10 and 56% admitted to modifying their habits recently in fear of contracting the virus. As regards attitude to religious norms, 77.77% agreed on cancellation of the lesser pilgrimage as a measure to curb the spread of the disease while 23.64% admitted that greater pilgrimage (Hajj) should proceed despite the persistence of the ongoing pandemic. About 50% of the respondents insisted on attending Friday congregational prayers despite social distancing. One in four people still harbored stigma towards a person who has recovered from the virus. 28% felt some races are more at risk of the disease though 66% mentioned always practicing social distancing from persons coughing or sneezing. Almost 70% of respondents said they were willing to accept a vaccine with 39% saying they would be willing to pay for it if not publicly funded. In univariate analysis increasing age and having been ever married were associated with GK while tertiary education was associated with GA [Odds Ratio; 95% Confidence Interval] 2.66(1.79-3.95). Independent positive predictors of GK were those who were or had ever been married, those who had marked fear of COVID-19, and had modified their habits in the last three months. Those who had non-tertiary education and had the questionnaire administered as paper rather than online version had GK but age was not a predictor.ConclusionKnowledge of transmission and preventive measures should be improved in the general population cognizant of cultural norms and Islamic practices. The study highlights the importance of considering belief systems and perception in developing control measures against COVID-19.
