Project description:Here, we report photonic nanostructures replicated from the adaxial epidermis of flower petals onto light-polymerized coatings using low-cost nanoimprint lithography at ambient temperature. These multifunctional nanocoatings are applied to confer enhanced light trapping, water repellence, and UV light and environmental moisture protection features in perovskite solar cells. The former feature helps attain a maximum power conversion efficiency of 24.61% (21.01% for the reference cell) without any additional device optimization. Added to these merits, the nanocoatings also enable stable operation under AM 1.5G and UV light continuous illumination or in real-world conditions. Our engineering approach provides a simple way to produce multifunctional nanocoatings optimized by nature's wisdom.

Project description:The photovoltaic (PV) effect in polar materials offers great potential for light-energy conversion that generates a voltage beyond the bandgap limit of present semiconductor-based solar cells. Ferroelectrics have received renewed attention because of the ability to deliver a high voltage in the presence of ferroelastic domain walls (DWs). In recent years, there has been considerable debate over the impact of the DWs on the PV effects, owing to lack of information on the bulk PV tensor of host ferroelectrics. In this article, we provide the first direct evidence of an unusually large PV response induced by ferroelastic DWs-termed 'DW'-PV effect. The precise estimation of the bulk PV tensor in single crystals of barium titanate enables us to quantify the giant PV effect driven by 90° DWs. We show that the DW-PV effect arises from an effective electric field consisting of a potential step and a local PV component in the 90° DW region. This work offers a starting point for further investigation into the DW-PV effect of alternative systems and opens a reliable route for enhancing the PV properties in ferroelectrics based on the engineering of domain structures in either bulk or thin-film form.

Project description:In an all-solid-state perovskite solar cell, methylammonium lead halide film is in charge of generating photo-excited electrons, thus its quality can directly influence the final photovoltaic performance of the solar cell. This paper accentuates a very simple chemical approach to improving the quality of a perovskite film with a suitable amount of acetic acid. With introduction of acetate ions, a homogeneous, continual and hole-free perovskite film comprised of high-crystallinity grains is obtained. UV-visible spectra, steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal that the obtained perovskite film under the optimized conditions shows a higher light absorption, more efficient electron transport, and faster electron extraction to the adjoining electron transport layer. The features result in the optimized perovskite film can provide an improved short-circuit current. The corresponding solar cells with a planar configuration achieves an improved power conversion efficiency of 13.80%, and the highest power conversion efficiency in the photovoltaic measurements is up to 14.71%. The results not only provide a simple approach to optimizing perovskite films but also present a novel angle of view on fabricating high-performance perovskite solar cells.

Project description:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites (OIHPs) have been demonstrated to be highly successful photovoltaic materials yielding very-high-efficiency solar cells. We report the room temperature observation of an anomalous photovoltaic (APV) effect in lateral structure OIHP devices manifested by the device's open-circuit voltage (VOC) that is much larger than the bandgap of OIHPs. The persistent VOC is proportional to the electrode spacing, resembling that of ferroelectric photovoltaic devices. However, the APV effect in OIHP devices is not caused by ferroelectricity. The APV effect can be explained by the formation of tunneling junctions randomly dispersed in the polycrystalline films, which allows the accumulation of photovoltage at a macroscopic level. The formation of internal tunneling junctions as a result of ion migration is visualized with Kelvin probe force microscopy scanning. This observation points out a new avenue for the formation of large and continuously tunable VOC without being limited by the materials' bandgap.

Project description:The number of publications on perovskite solar cells (PSCs) continues to grow exponentially. Although the efficiency of PSCs has exceeded 25.5%, not every research laboratory can reproduce this result or even pass the border of 20%. Unfortunately, it is not always clear which dominating mechanism is responsible for the performance drop. Here, a simple method of light intensity analysis of the JV parameters is developed, allowing an understanding of what the mechanisms are that appear in the solar cell and limit device performance. The developed method is supported by the drift-diffusion model and is aimed at helping in the explanation of parasitic losses from the interface or bulk recombination, series resistance, or shunt resistance in the perovskite solar cell. This method can help not only point toward the dominating of bulk or interface recombination in the devices but also determine which interface is more defective. A detailed and stepwise guidance for such a type of light intensity analysis of JV parameters is provided. The proposed method and the conclusions of this study are supported by a series of case studies, showing the effectiveness of the proposed method on real examples.

Project description:The current exponential growth of solar electricity technologies toward consumer-oriented applications, as in building- or vehicle-integrated photovoltaics (B/VIPV), is calling for improved solar cells, not only in cost-effectiveness, but also with better adaptability and aesthetics. Here, using perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as test bed, we demonstrate an unprecedented photonic method to generate any color on a cell layout, while also increasing PV efficiency. To this end, photonic surface features were designed for PSCs, which filled the dual purpose of light-trapping (LT) and modulation of reflected light interference. A variety of geometries, from simple gratings to complex semispheroids, were optically optimized for two of the most challenging colors, magenta and green, while assuring the generation of their maximum feasible photocurrent. The best results corresponded to a current density of 22.07 mA/cm2, obtained for the magenta solar cell with top domes, exhibiting an increase of 6.68%, relative to an optimized planar reference cell. In turn, the same type of geometry was able to generate the leading green cell, with up to 21.40 mA/cm2 (a relative increase of 3.44%). Additionally, the uniformity of the optical output of the optimal solar cells was tested under a range of incident light angles, between 0◦ and 60◦, where the current density suffered relative losses only down to 6.65%.

Project description:This research addresses critical challenges in the photovoltaic (PV) industry to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, amidst geopolitical semiconductor supply risks and escalating volumes of PV waste. We demonstrate the opportunity to address these challenges through the design of PV cells which are compatible with a circular economy. In this proof-of-concept study, unpurified locally sourced recovered carbon black (rCB) from waste tires was integrated into the mesoporous carbon layer of triple mesoscopic perovskite solar cells as a sustainable alternative to virgin carbon sources, and comparable efficiencies (9.98%) to commercial carbon paste benchmarks (10.4%) were attained. Key findings reveal that the presence of sulfur, silica, and zinc oxide contaminants only affected performance and durability marginally. While sulfur enhanced perovskite crystallization, as evidenced by an increased fill factor, it potentially influenced the absorber's valence band maximum, slightly dropping the open-circuit voltage. Silica and zinc oxide exacerbated moisture ingress under UK weather conditions, as revealed by outdoor testing, which accelerated degradation post-breaching of the encapsulant. Such degradation could be mitigated through effective encapsulation. Although further research is crucial to maximize performance and device longevity, the feasibility of using locally sourced rCB in PV technology has been demonstrated. This approach could support regional energy resilience and sustainability objectives within a circular economy framework.

Project description:Bandgap engineering of a photonic crystal is highly desirable for photon management in photonic sensors and devices. Aperiodic photonic crystals (APCs) can provide unprecedented opportunities for much more versatile photon management, due to increased degrees of freedom in the design and the unique properties brought about by the aperiodic structures as compared to their periodic counterparts. However, many efforts still remain on conceptual approaches, practical achievements in APCs are rarely reported due to the difficulties in fabrication. Here, we report a simple but highly controllable current-pulse anodization process to design and fabricate TiO2 nanotube APCs. By coupling an APC into the photoanode of a dye-sensitized solar cell, we demonstrate the concept of using APC to achieve nearly full-visible-spectrum light harvesting, as evidenced by both experimental and simulated results. It is anticipated that this work will lead to more fruitful practical applications of APCs in high-efficiency photovoltaics, sensors and optoelectronic devices.

Project description:Recently, the simulation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) via SCAPS-1D has been widely reported. In this study, we adopted SCAPS-1D as a simulation tool for the numerical simulation of lead-free (Pb-free) PSCs. We used methyl ammonium germanium iodide (MAGeI3) as a light absorber, zinc oxysulphide (ZnOS) as an electron transport layer (ETL), and spiro-OMeTAD as a hole transport layer. Further, the thickness of the ZnOS, MAGeI3, and spiro-OMeTAD layers was optimized. The optimal thicknesses of the ZnOS, MAGeI3, and spiro-OMeTAD layers were found to be 100 nm, 550 nm, and 100 nm, respectively. The optimized MAGeI3-based PSCs exhibited excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.62%, fill factor (FF) of 84.05%, and Jsc of 14.51 mA/cm2. A fantastic open circuit voltage of 1.77 V was also obtained using SCAPS-1D. We believe that these theoretically optimized parameters and conditions may help improve the experimental efficiency of MAGeI3-based PSCs in the future.

Project description:Stimulated by the extraordinary power conversion efficiency (PCE) of hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIP) based solar cells (SCs), the derivative studies on inorganic perovskites (IOP) based SCs have been intensely investigated. In order to overcome the disadvantages of CsPbBr3, most prominently the unfavorable larger band gap (2.3eV), a grating layer of mesoporous anatase TiO2(mp-TiO2) has been inserted into the conventional configuration of SCs. The grating layer acts as the electron transfer layer (ETL) and light absorption strengthening layer at the same time. Due to the combined effects, the increased contacting area increased the fill factor (FF) and enhanced light trapping in the grating layer increased the short-current density, the average PCE of IOP based SCs has increased from 5.67% to 7.58%, which is a ca. 34% increase relatively. Furthermore, research on traditional HOIP-based SCs is also conducted. Interestingly, the increasing PCE mechanism is quite different from their inorganic counterparts, which should be attributed to the strain effect of different film structures. Thus, the strain-induced defect charge-state transitions of MAPbI3 by the grating layer increased the open-circuit voltage (Voc); and similarly, the increased contacting area also increased the FF, resulting in a 13% increase for PCE.
