The mechanism of internal and external efficacy influences residents' pro-environmental behavior through environmental willingness.

ABSTRACT: The Chinese government's environmental conservation efforts require the active participation of all society. This study investigated how internal and external efficacy influence pro-environmental behavior with environmental willingness as a mediator. This study employed a structural equation model to analyze the data from 1499 survey questionnaires. The analysis revealed that both internal and external efficacy can enhance individuals' pro-environmental behavior in the private and public spheres. External efficacy has a stronger impact on environmental willingness and public sphere environmental behavior, while internal efficacy more significantly influences private sphere environmental behavior. Additionally, environmental willingness only mediates efficacy and public sphere environmental behavior. The innovation of this study is the examination of internal and external efficacy from the perspective of different sources and the comparison of their differential impacts on pro-environmental behavior. Relevant policies should effectively enhance residents' internal and external efficacy to comprehensively improve their level of pro-environmental behavior.

Project description:RationaleBehaviors such as hand-washing and vaccination save human lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond. Yet, people differ widely in their willingness to engage in them. This investigation examines whether people's willingness to protect themselves physically from contracting coronavirus depends on their self-esteem. Based on self-verification theory, we propose that people who hold negative self-views are less motivated to protect their health which reduces their willingness to engage in recommended preventive measures such as mask-wearing and social-distancing.ObjectiveWe set out to test (i) whether self-esteem predicts people's willingness to engage in COVID-19 prevention behaviors, (ii) whether this relationship is due to variance in motivation to protect one's health (as well as alternative mechanisms), and (iii) whether health messages can more successfully persuade low self-esteem people to follow preventive measures by framing those behaviors around protecting the health of others (vs. oneself).MethodsFour studies were conducted with U.S. and German residents. In Study 1, we examine the association between self-esteem, willingness to engage in self-protection behavior, health motivation, and several alternative accounts. In Study 2, we manipulate state self-esteem, and in Studies 3 and 4, we vary the target of COVID-19 prevention behaviors (self vs. other).ResultsPeople with chronic or temporarily induced low self-esteem report a lower willingness to engage in COVID-19 prevention behaviors because they lack motivation to protect their health. Varying the protection target of preventive behaviors (self vs. others) interacts with self-esteem: Low self-esteem people are more willing to follow preventive measures (e.g., vaccination) when they are framed as protecting others (vs. oneself).ConclusionsSelf-esteem impacts people's behavior during a global pandemic and needs to be considered when designing health communications. Public health messages can increase compliance among individuals with lower self-esteem by framing prevention behaviors as a way to protect the health of others.

Project description:BackgroundThe role of meniscal lesions and repair in combination with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and reconstruction has not been extensively investigated in vivo and under weightbearing conditions.PurposeThe purposes of this study were to (1) compare the in vivo knee kinematics between patients with ACL tear and those with combined ACL and medial meniscal tears and (2) investigate kinematic differences between isolated ACL reconstruction and ACL reconstruction plus medial meniscal repair (MR). It was hypothesized that concomitant posterior horn medial meniscal tear and ACL deficiency would affect knee internal-external rotation and anterior-posterior translation but MR would restore these parameters.Study designControlled laboratory study.MethodsNineteen patients who underwent ACL reconstruction were included: 10 had intact menisci (IM group) and 9 had a medial meniscal injury that was repaired during ACL reconstruction using an all-inside technique (MR group). Preoperatively and 18 months postoperatively, active knee kinematics under weightbearing conditions was evaluated during a single-leg squat using a dynamic biplane x-ray imaging system. The general linear model was used to investigate the differences between group (IM vs MR) and time (preoperative vs follow-up) and their interactions.ResultsTibial internal rotation was higher in the MR group than the IM group both before and after surgery (P = .007). Knee valgus rotation was higher in the MR group preoperatively (P < .001), while no differences were found postoperatively because of an increase of valgus rotation in the IM group, which was significant in the descendant phase (P < .001). Preoperatively, the IM group showed a more medial tibial translation compared with the MR group in the descendant phase (P = .006).ConclusionWhen performing a single-leg squat, patients with ACL-deficient knees and a medial meniscal tear demonstrated a more valgus rotation, tibial internal rotation, and lateral tibial translation versus those with intact menisci. After ACL reconstruction and MR, these patients demonstrated significantly higher tibial internal rotation when compared with patients who underwent isolated ACL reconstruction.Clinical relevanceSurgeons should be aware that MR does not fully restore knee kinematics in vivo and under weightbearing conditions in the context of ACL reconstruction.
