Project description:Color vision deficiency (CVD) affects a significant portion of the population, yet its impact is often overlooked in medical education, especially in visually demanding specialties like dermatology, pathology, and radiology. In this study, we investigated the potential of ChatGPT to comprehend CVD-simulated images in image-based diagnostic tasks. Notably, the model successfully adapted its diagnostic reasoning to match CVD-modified color perception while preserving high prediction accuracy. These findings highlight the potential of using ChatGPT to foster more inclusive learning environments for individuals with CVD in visually intensive medical specialties.

Project description:BackgroundThe chatbot application Bennie and the Chats was introduced due to the outbreak of COVID-19, which is aimed to provide substitution for teaching conventional clinical history-taking skills. It was implemented with DialogFlow with preset responses, which consists of a large constraint on responding to different conversations. The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence, such as the recent introduction of ChatGPT, offers innovative conversational experiences with computer-generated responses. It provides an idea to develop the second generation of Bennie and the Chats. As the epidemic slows, it can become an assisting tool for students as additional exercise. In this work, we present the second generation of Bennie and the Chats with ChatGPT, which provides room for flexible and expandable improvement.MethodsThe objective of this research is to examine the influence of the newly proposed chatbot on learning efficacy and experiences in bedside teaching, and its potential contributions to international teaching collaboration. This study employs a mixed-method design that incorporates both quantitative and qualitative approaches. From the quantitative approach, we launched the world's first cross-territory virtual bedside teaching with our proposed application and conducted a survey between the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the National University of Singapore (NUS). Descriptive statistics and Spearman's Correlation were applied for data analysis. From the qualitative approach, a comparative analysis was conducted between the two versions of the chatbot. And, we discuss the interrelationship between the quantitative and qualitative results.ResultsFor the quantitative result, we collected a questionnaire from 45 students about the evaluation of virtual bedside teaching between territories. Over 75% of the students agreed that teaching can enhance learning effectiveness and experience. Moreover, by exchanging patients cases, 82.2% of students agreed that it helps to gain more experiences with diseases that may not be prevalent in their own locality. For the qualitative result, the new chatbot provides better usability and flexibility.ConclusionVirtual bedside teaching with chatbots has revolutionized conventional bedside teaching by its advantages and allowing international collaborations. We believe that the training of history taking skills by chatbot will be a feasible supplementary teaching tool to conventional bedside teaching.

Project description:Large language models like ChatGPT are a type of machine learning model that can offer a positive paradigm shift in case-based/problem-based learning (CBL/PBL). ChatGPT may be able to augment the existing paradigm to work in conjunction with the clinical-teacher in PBL/CBL case generation. It can develop realistic patient cases that could be revised by clinical teachers to ensure accuracy and relevance. Further, it can be directed to include specific case content in order to facilitate the constructive alignment of the case with the broader learning objectives of the curriculum. Project description:BackgroundThe transition to clinical clerkships can be difficult for medical students, as it requires the synthesis and application of preclinical information into diagnostic and therapeutic decisions. ChatGPT-a generative language model with many medical applications due to its creativity, memory, and accuracy-can help students in this transition.ObjectiveThis paper models ChatGPT 3.5's ability to perform interactive clinical simulations and shows this tool's benefit to medical education.MethodsSimulation starting prompts were refined using ChatGPT 3.5 in Google Chrome. Starting prompts were selected based on assessment format, stepwise progression of simulation events and questions, free-response question type, responsiveness to user inputs, postscenario feedback, and medical accuracy of the feedback. The chosen scenarios were advanced cardiac life support and medical intensive care (for sepsis and pneumonia).ResultsTwo starting prompts were chosen. Prompt 1 was developed through 3 test simulations and used successfully in 2 simulations. Prompt 2 was developed through 10 additional test simulations and used successfully in 1 simulation.ConclusionsChatGPT is capable of creating simulations for early clinical education. These simulations let students practice novel parts of the clinical curriculum, such as forming independent diagnostic and therapeutic impressions over an entire patient encounter. Furthermore, the simulations can adapt to user inputs in a way that replicates real life more accurately than premade question bank clinical vignettes. Finally, ChatGPT can create potentially unlimited free simulations with specific feedback, which increases access for medical students with lower socioeconomic status and underresourced medical schools. However, no tool is perfect, and ChatGPT is no exception; there are concerns about simulation accuracy and replicability that need to be addressed to further optimize ChatGPT's performance as an educational resource.

Project description:BackgroundChatGPT is a natural language processing model developed by OpenAI, which can be iteratively updated and optimized to accommodate the changing and complex requirements of human verbal communication.ObjectiveThe study aimed to evaluate ChatGPT's accuracy in answering orthopedics-related multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and assess its short-term effects as a learning aid through a randomized controlled trial. In addition, long-term effects on student performance in other subjects were measured using final examination results.MethodsWe first evaluated ChatGPT's accuracy in answering MCQs pertaining to orthopedics across various question formats. Then, 129 undergraduate medical students participated in a randomized controlled study in which the ChatGPT group used ChatGPT as a learning tool, while the control group was prohibited from using artificial intelligence software to support learning. Following a 2-week intervention, the 2 groups' understanding of orthopedics was assessed by an orthopedics test, and variations in the 2 groups' performance in other disciplines were noted through a follow-up at the end of the semester.ResultsChatGPT-4.0 answered 1051 orthopedics-related MCQs with a 70.60% (742/1051) accuracy rate, including 71.8% (237/330) accuracy for A1 MCQs, 73.7% (330/448) accuracy for A2 MCQs, 70.2% (92/131) accuracy for A3/4 MCQs, and 58.5% (83/142) accuracy for case analysis MCQs. As of April 7, 2023, a total of 129 individuals participated in the experiment. However, 19 individuals withdrew from the experiment at various phases; thus, as of July 1, 2023, a total of 110 individuals accomplished the trial and completed all follow-up work. After we intervened in the learning style of the students in the short term, the ChatGPT group answered more questions correctly than the control group (ChatGPT group: mean 141.20, SD 26.68; control group: mean 130.80, SD 25.56; P=.04) in the orthopedics test, particularly on A1 (ChatGPT group: mean 46.57, SD 8.52; control group: mean 42.18, SD 9.43; P=.01), A2 (ChatGPT group: mean 60.59, SD 10.58; control group: mean 56.66, SD 9.91; P=.047), and A3/4 MCQs (ChatGPT group: mean 19.57, SD 5.48; control group: mean 16.46, SD 4.58; P=.002). At the end of the semester, we found that the ChatGPT group performed better on final examinations in surgery (ChatGPT group: mean 76.54, SD 9.79; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.11; P=.02) and obstetrics and gynecology (ChatGPT group: mean 75.98, SD 8.94; control group: mean 72.54, SD 8.66; P=.04) than the control group.ConclusionsChatGPT answers orthopedics-related MCQs accurately, and students using it excel in both short-term and long-term assessments. Project description:BackgroundChatGPT is a well-known large language model-based chatbot. It could be used in the medical field in many aspects. However, some physicians are still unfamiliar with ChatGPT and are concerned about its benefits and risks.ObjectiveWe aim to evaluate the perception of physicians and medical students toward using ChatGPT in the medical field.MethodsA web-based questionnaire was sent to medical students, interns, residents, and attending staff with questions regarding their perception toward using ChatGPT in clinical practice and medical education. Participants were also asked to rate their perception of ChatGPT's generated response about knee osteoarthritis.ResultsParticipants included 124 medical students, 46 interns, 37 residents, and 32 attending staff. After reading ChatGPT's response, 132 of the 239 (55.2%) participants had a positive rating about using ChatGPT for clinical practice. The proportion of positive answers was significantly lower in graduated physicians (48/115, 42%) compared with medical students (84/124, 68%; P<.001). Participants listed a lack of a patient-specific treatment plan, updated evidence, and a language barrier as ChatGPT's pitfalls. Regarding using ChatGPT for medical education, the proportion of positive responses was also significantly lower in graduate physicians (71/115, 62%) compared to medical students (103/124, 83.1%; P<.001). Participants were concerned that ChatGPT's response was too superficial, might lack scientific evidence, and might need expert verification.ConclusionsMedical students generally had a positive perception of using ChatGPT for guiding treatment and medical education, whereas graduated doctors were more cautious in this regard. Nonetheless, both medical students and graduated doctors positively perceived using ChatGPT for creating patient educational materials.

Project description:Lifestyle medicine (LM) is an emerging specialty that is gaining momentum and support from around the world. The American Medical Association passed a resolution to support incorporating LM curricula in medical schools in 2017. Since then, the American College of Lifestyle Medicine Undergraduate Medical Education Task Force has created a framework for incorporating LM into medical school curricula. This article provides competencies for medical school LM curriculum implementation and illustrates how they relate to the Association of American Medical College's Core Entrustable Professional Activities and the LM Certification Competencies from the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine. Finally, standards are presented for how medical schools may receive certification for integrating LM into their curriculum and how medical students can work toward becoming board certified in LM through an educational pathway.

Project description:We evaluated the performance of a large language model called ChatGPT on the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), which consists of three exams: Step 1, Step 2CK, and Step 3. ChatGPT performed at or near the passing threshold for all three exams without any specialized training or reinforcement. Additionally, ChatGPT demonstrated a high level of concordance and insight in its explanations. These results suggest that large language models may have the potential to assist with medical education, and potentially, clinical decision-making.

Project description:BackgroundArtificial intelligence (AI) in medicine has primarily focused on diagnosing and treating diseases and assisting in the development of academic scholarly work. This study aimed to evaluate a new use of AI in orthopaedics: content generation for professional medical education. Quality, accuracy, and time were compared between content created by ChatGPT and orthopaedic surgery clinical fellows.MethodsChatGPT and 3 orthopaedic adult reconstruction fellows were tasked with creating educational summaries of 5 total joint arthroplasty-related topics. Responses were evaluated across 5 domains by 4 blinded reviewers from different institutions who are all current or former total joint arthroplasty fellowship directors or national arthroplasty board review course directors.ResultsChatGPT created better orthopaedic content than fellows when mean aggregate scores for all 5 topics and domains were compared (P ≤ .001). The only domain in which fellows outperformed ChatGPT was the integration of key points and references (P = .006). ChatGPT outperformed the fellows in response time, averaging 16.6 seconds vs the fellows' 94 minutes per prompt (P = .002).ConclusionsWith its efficient and accurate content generation, the current findings underscore ChatGPT's potential as an adjunctive tool to enhance orthopaedic arthroplasty graduate medical education. Future studies are warranted to explore AI's role further and optimize its utility in augmenting the educational development of arthroplasty trainees.

Project description:BackgroundThe use of ChatGPT in the field of health has recently gained popularity. In the field of dentistry, ChatGPT can provide services in areas such as, dental education and patient education. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality, readability and originality of pediatric patient/parent information and academic content produced by ChatGPT in the field of pediatric dentistry.MethodsA total of 60 questions were asked to ChatGPT for each topic (dental trauma, fluoride, and tooth eruption/oral health) consisting of pediatric patient/parent questions and academic questions. The modified Global Quality Scale (the scoring ranges from 1: poor quality to 5: excellent quality) was used to evaluate the quality of the answers and Flesch Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level were used to evaluate the readability. A similarity index was used to compare the quantitative similarity of the answers given by the software with the guidelines and academic references in different databases.ResultsThe evaluation of answers quality revealed an average score of 4.3 ± 0.7 for pediatric patient/parent questions and 3.7 ± 0.8 for academic questions, indicating a statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Academic questions regarding dental trauma received the lowest scores (p < 0.05). However, no significant differences were observed in readability and similarity between ChatGPT answers for different question groups and topics (p > 0.05).ConclusionsIn pediatric dentistry, ChatGPT provides quality information to patients/parents. ChatGPT, which is difficult to readability for patients/parents and offers an acceptable similarity rate, needs to be improved in order to interact with people more efficiently and fluently.
