Project description:Informed by social support theory and control-value theory, this study investigates the predictive role of teacher support on classroom flow among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and the mediating effect of academic self-efficacy. A survey was conducted among 557 Chinese university EFL learners to gather relevant data. Descriptive statistics indicate that the participants exhibited a moderate level of classroom flow and exhibited significant variations based on gender and grade. Analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that teacher support has a noteworthy, positive predictive impact on EFL learners' classroom flow. Furthermore, academic self-efficacy serves as a partial mediator between teacher support and classroom flow, with instrumental and emotional teacher support showing the strongest indirect effects. Notably, various dimensions of teacher support, aligning with students' psychological needs as outlined by self-determination theory, have unique predictive effects on both classroom flow and academic self-efficacy. Appraisal and informational teacher support have the greatest predictive influence on classroom flow among the teacher support considered. The findings enhance understanding of the dynamics between teacher support, academic self-efficacy, and classroom flow, offering practical implications for creating autonomy-supportive educational environments that can elevate EFL learners' engagement and academic achievements.

Project description:Based on the framework of self-determination theory (SDT), this two-wave longitudinal empirical investigation examined the actual practicality of certain strategies that have been theoretically acknowledged as having potential positive effect on English as a foreign language (EFL) learner's autonomy. Strategies targeting learners' self-determined learning in the classroom in terms of satisfying learner basic psychological needs (BPNs) of autonomy, competence, and relatedness as well as SDT key concepts, such as learner sense of choice, intrinsic motivation, control over learning, goals and needs, and metacognitive skills, were implemented in a treatment group for 12weeks. A classroom observation was used to evaluate teachers' autonomy-supportive teaching and a student self-report measure, and an observation were used to assess learners' autonomy. The findings derived out from analyses of variance, covariance and a hierarchical regression revealed that the experimental intervention led to statistically significant increased EFL autonomy for learners in the experimental group. Learner perceived choice, autonomy support, competence, and intrinsic motivation mediated the relationship between teacher autonomy-supportive teaching and learner autonomy; with perceived choice being the strongest predictor of learner autonomy. These findings acknowledge the vital role of teacher autonomy-supportive teaching in promoting EFL learner autonomy and recommend that, beside satisfying their BPNs, students should always be granted a larger space of freedom of choice, more control over learning, and more involvement in decision-making process.

Project description:Background: This study determines if the English foreign language (EFL) Saudi students achieve greater syntactic complexity when they engage in expressive writing than when they write about a general topic. Methods: This study employs an ex post facto research design to compare the writing output of EFL learners. The sample comprised of 24 college students enrolled in an English writing course, at Department of English and Translation, College of Sciences and Arts, Qassim University, Saudi Arabia for the academic year 2021-2022. The participants were assigned randomly, and their writing was analyzed using the computer software named Web-based L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer. Lu's (2010) four board element of syntactic complexity and 14 units is employed to analyze the data. Results: Results show that students achieve higher syntactic complexity when engaging in writing on emotional topics (expressive writing) than when writing on general topics. Further, analysis shows that students' emotional writings are significant on three syntactic complexity measures, i.e., length of production units; amount of subordination; and phrase sophistication. The fourth measure, i.e., coordination, does not reflect significant differences between their expressive writing and general writing. Conclusions: The study's implications are expected to aid EFL instructors and curriculum designers in successfully implementing language education, particularly in writing, in the Saudi context. In line with the input hypothesis, this research suggests that writing about personal emotional events may enhance the quality of language two (L2) writing by increasing syntactic complexity. In this dimension, this study could be additional evidence of the Krashen hypothesis.

Project description:Despite majoring in English, many junior and senior college students face limited opportunities to practice their EFL speaking in class. Some self-motivated students, through self-regulated learning, seek beyond-class opportunities to tap into physical and virtual human interaction to hone their spoken English. This study examined junior and senior college students' level of self-regulated motivation to improve their speaking of English as a foreign language (SRMIS-EFL). It looked into the interaction of students' academic level and gender to their SRMIS-EFL. Participants were 300 EFL college junior and senior students from an English Department of a Yemeni university. This study utilized an online self-reported SRMIS-EFL questionnaire to gather data. Its descriptive and inferential statistical analyses revealed that senior students' overall level of SRMIS-ELF was high, while junior students' level was medium. It found that students used a range of motivation self-regulation strategies to improve their EFL speaking competence. It also indicated no significant relationship between students' SRMIS-EFL and their academic level. However, it evinced that students' gender had a small but significant effect, in favor of female students, on their SRMIS-EFL. The study suggests incorporating motivation regulation training into EFL programs to raise awareness of motivational self-regulatory strategies to cultivate student motivation.

Project description:BackgroundThe role of parent support for adolescents has been validated in online learning. However, less attention has been paid to undergraduates.Main bodyThe research used self-reported questionnaires to investigate the mediating effects of self-regulation in parent autonomy support and academic engagement (cognitive, behavioral, and emotional dimensions) within the online environment in the context of Chinese culture.ObjectiveThe present study recruited 1908 undergraduates in China.MethodsThe students completed measures of parent autonomy support, self-regulation and three sub-dimensions of academic engagement.ResultsThe results indicated that parent autonomy support exerted a direct and significant effect on the three sub-dimensions of academic engagement in online learning. Self-regulation partially mediated the relations between parent autonomy support and three sub-dimensions of academic engagement.ConclusionThese findings showed parents should autonomously support students to promote their cognitive, behavioral, and emotional engagement. Moreover, the partial mediation explained how parent autonomy support affected three sub-dimensions of academic engagement. Limitations and educational implications were also discussed.

Project description:This study examines the associations between speaking accuracy and fluency among English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and emotional intelligence (EI), creative thinking (CT), and academic enthusiasm (AE). Quantitative data was used in a thorough analysis that was carried out utilizing a cross-sectional design. Three hundred and twenty EFL learners were chosen as a sample using a multi-stage cluster sampling technique. The creativity questionnaire by Abedi, the EI questionnaire by Schutte et al. and the AE questionnaire by Fredricks et al. were all completed by the participants. Quantitative data analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0 and AMOS 24.0. The results showed a strong positive association between better speaking accuracy and fluency and greater levels of CT, EI, and AE. More precisely, learners with greater EI were able to control their emotions better, which improved their ability to speak clearly and fluently. Speaking performance was improved by those with higher CT because they showed improved problem-solving abilities and linguistic originality. High AE was also associated with better language practice and competence due to higher desire and involvement. These findings imply that encouraging CT, EI, and AE in language learning settings can greatly improve learners' speaking ability. To better understand the impact of other elements on speaking proficiency, future research should look into motivation, self-esteem, and learning methodologies.

Project description:Analyzing students' internal cognitive-motivational appraisals and achievement emotions is of pivotal importance for educational outcomes and student individual wellbeing, yet little is shown about their associations with teacher autonomy support. This study investigates the relationship between perceived teacher autonomy support and reading achievement by addressing mediating influences of control and value-related constructs, i.e., reading self-efficacy, meaning in life, and reading enjoyment. Multiple mediation modeling was adopted to test the proposed model with carrying out a total of 12,058 students from 361 schools in China in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 reading database. The results elucidated that student-perceived teacher autonomy support is significantly positively related to adolescents' reading outcomes by fostering internal control and value appraisals and academic enjoyment. These current findings confirm the positive correlation between teacher autonomy support and adolescents' motivational and emotional factors, providing significant practical implications for educators to adopt various teaching strategies to enhance adolescents' self-efficacy, intrinsic values, and positive emotions.

Project description:The Rwanda Quality Basic Education for Human Capital Development (RQBEHCD) project is financed by Word Bank Group through the Government of Rwanda and was embarked on in 2020. It aimed to provide the necessary support to upper primary and lower secondary school teachers and equip them with enough content knowledge, lab skills, pedagogy, and the use of technology in teaching. The dataset presented here comprises data collected from teachers selected in the ten districts of Rwanda. Data were collected in three ways: (a) teachers' performance in mathematics and science subjects, (b) teachers' beliefs, and (c) classroom observation. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches were used to collect data. Data were collected before and after delivering Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training on Teacher Pedagogical Content Knowledge and the use of modernized tools and approaches. The data were gathered between July 2021 and June 2022, and teachers received the CPD training from August 2021 to April 2022. Teachers' performance data in mathematics and science subjects were collected from 657 lower secondary and 290 upper primary teachers using the teachers' performance achievement test, while beliefs data were collected from 691 secondary and 290 primary teachers using the attitude test. Furthermore, 659 lower secondary and 300 upper primary Mathematics and Science teachers were observed using the Kobo-toolbox-generated Classroom-Based Monitoring and Evaluation Tool (CMET). This data article explains how we created, collected, and analyzed data for the study. Thus, this dataset is presented in the form of raw and analyzed data. The presented data provide information teachers' performance and beliefs in Mathematics and Science; it also enables researchers to reanalyze it based on the variables of interest. In addition, it provides a broad overview of the impact of CPD on teaching mathematics and Science in primary and secondary schools to policymakers, educators, researchers, and other stakeholders.

Project description:Motivated by the positive psychology movement in the English as Foreign Language (EFL), existing studies have demonstrated that subject-related enjoyment has a positive correlation with academic achievement. However, quite a few studieshave examined why academic enjoyment can predict positive academic achievement. This study aimed to investigate whether behavioral engagement, self-concept, and organizational strategy mediated relations between academic enjoyment and achievement in EFL setting. 528 Chinese secondary school students (Male: N = 280; Female: N = 248) participated in the survey and completed the questionnaires on EFL-related enjoyment, behavioral engagement, self-concept, organizational strategy, and academic performance. Structural equation model (SEM) analyses showed that students' academic enjoyment positively predicted their English achievement. Academic engagement, self-concept, and organizational strategy had parallel multiple mediating effects between academic enjoyment and English achievement. Multi-group SEM analysis demonstrated that the model had invariance across genders, indicating that the model is applicable to both male and female students. Limitations and implications are discussed.

Project description:The literature has widely recognized the significance of examining the influence of teacher professional identity (TPI), teacher autonomy (TA), and teacher work motivation (TWM) on teacher well-being. However, there is a noticeable gap in the research regarding the role of teacher immunity (TI) and teacher emotion regulation (TER) in TPI, TA, TWM among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers. In light of this gap, the present study aimed to investigate the association between TI and TER with TPI, TA, and TWM of EFL teachers. A sample of 433 EFL teachers completed the Language Teacher Immunity Instrument, the Language Teacher Emotion Regulation Inventory, the Teacher Professional Identity Scale, the Teacher Autonomy Questionnaire, and the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale. The Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were conducted to analyze the data. Findings disclosed that TI and TER were strong predictor of TPI, TA, and TWM among the EFL teachers. The study concludes by offering some pedagogical implications for different stakeholders and discussing potential areas of research that can be developed based on the findings.
