Project description:Background and objectiveKlotho is a protein that is closely related to human aging. Soluble Klotho (S-Klotho) is a circulating protein, and its level decreases in response to systemic inflammation. The relationship between the platelet/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (PHR), an emerging inflammatory index, and S-Klotho concentrations is still unclear. In addition, the mean platelet volume has been confirmed to have a significant negative association with S-Klotho concentrations, but the relationship between the platelet count (PC) and S-Klotho concentrations has not yet been reported.MethodsData from individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) during the five cycles from 2007 to 2016 were retrieved for analysis. Linear regression, two-piecewise linear regression, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) methods were used to analyze the associations of the PHR index and its components with S-Klotho concentrations. In addition, subgroup analysis and effect modification tests were conducted.ResultsA total of 11,123 participants (5463 men (48.17%)), with an average age of 56.2 years, were included. After full adjustment, the S-Klotho levels of participants in the highest quartile group of PHR (β: -51.19, 95% CI: -75.41 to -26.97, P < 0.001) and the highest quartile group of PC (β: -72.34, 95% CI: -93.32 to -51.37, P < 0.0001) were significantly lower than those in their respective lowest quartile groups, and a significant downward trend was presented among the four groups (P for trend < 0.05, respectively). However, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentrations were not significantly associated with S-Klotho concentrations. RCS revealed that the PHR and PC were nonlinearly associated with S-Klotho concentrations; two-piecewise linear regression revealed that the inflection points were 175.269 and 152, respectively, and that these associations slightly weakened after the inflection point. According to the subgroup analysis, liver disease status enhanced the association between the PC and S-Klotho concentrations.ConclusionsBoth the PHR and PC were significantly negatively associated with S-Klotho concentrations, and these associations were nonlinear. There was no significant association between HDL-C and S-Klotho concentrations. Liver disease status enhances the negative association between the PC and S-Klotho concentrations, and the specific mechanism deserves further exploration.

Project description:Background and objectiveThe value of the non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) assessment in the context of metabolic abnormalities is growing in importance. Nevertheless, the relationship between NHHR and hyperuricemia (HUA) is unknown. This study seeks to investigate the relationship between NHHR and HUA.MethodsThe data derived from the 2017-2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) included 7,876 adult participants. The multivariable logistic regression model, subgroup analysis and smooth fitting curve were utilized in order to investigate the association between NHHR and HUA.ResultsIn the fully adjusted model 3, NHHR was significantly associated with HUA. Specifically, participants in the highest quartile of NHHR had 1.95 times higher odds of HUA prevalence compared to those in the lowest quartile [2.95 (2.39, 3.64), P < 0.0001]. Although the overall trend suggested a positive association, further analysis using smooth fitting curves and threshold effect analysis indicated that this association was nonlinear, with an inflection point at 5.8. The positive association persisted across different HUA definitions and after removing outliers. Subgroup analysis showed significant interactions between NHHR and HUA in different races and diabetes statuses. The odds of HUA prevalence were higher among non-diabetic participants [1.40 (1.32, 1.49), P < 0.0001] compared to diabetic participants [1.18 (1.06, 1.32), P = 0.0031]. Mexican Americans had the lowest odds of HUA prevalence [1.09 (0.92, 1.27), P = 0.2413] compared to other races.ConclusionsThere is a significant positive association between NHHR and HUA, indicating that NHHR may serve as a potential risk assessment maker for HUA, although further prospective studies are needed for validation.

Project description:BackgroundThis paper investigated the link between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in adult diabetic patients and identified the optimal NHHR value for impacting DKD.MethodsThis cross-sectional research made use of records from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) executed between 2005 and 2016. The link of NHHR to DKD risk was analyzed by logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models. The stability and reliability of the results were assessed by subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis.ResultsIn total, 4,177 participants were involved. As a continuous variable, NHHR was markedly connected to an increased risk of DKD (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.02, 1.12, P < 0.01). When NHHR was grouped in quartiles, relative to the reference set, the highest NHHR group was also linked to a heightened risk of DKD (OR 1.23, 95% CI 1.01, 1.50, P < 0.05). The outcome of RCS show a "J" shaped correlation between NHHR and DKD risk (P for nonlinear = 0.0136). The risk of developing DKD was the lowest when NHHR equals 2.66. Subgroup analysis revealed that the link of NHHR to DKD persisted in participants aged below 40, females, non-smokers, and those without hyperuricemia. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated a certain robustness in this association.ConclusionA meaningful link is present between NHHR and DKD. An NHHR value of around 2.66 could represent the ideal cutoff for assessing DKD risk.

Project description:BackgroundFrailty is an increasingly important determinant in the field of health, and its identification has important clinical significance in the field of critical care medicine. However, there are still a large number of challenges in quick and accurate identification of frailty. This study aims to evaluate the value of the neutrophil/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHR) in frailty and its long-term survival.MethodsAdult participants from seven study cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database were included. Frailty was assessed with a 49-item Frailty Index (FI). Weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and Cox regression were used to analyze the association of NHR with frailty and its long-term survival. In addition, subgroup and interaction analyses were also performed.ResultsA total of 34,382 adult participants aged 47.6 on average were included, and 16,950 (48.8%) of them were males. After the adjustment of potential confounding variables, an increase of one standard deviation (SD) in NHR resulted in the increase of the incidence of frailty by 11% (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.04-1.18, P = 0.002). RCS showed a J-shaped association between NHR and frailty, which was robust in all subgroups according to the subgroup analysis. In addition, the survival analysis revealed that NHR was significantly positively associated with all-cause (HR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.07-1.17, P < 0.0001), cardiocerebrovascular disease (CCD)-specific (HR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.11-1.33, P < 0.0001), and cancer-specific mortality risks (HR: 1.13, 95% CI: 1.07-1.19, P < 0.0001) in frail individuals.ConclusionIn the American adult population, NHR maintains a J-shaped relationship with frailty. In addition, NHR can help predict long-term mortality in frail individuals. This study demonstrates that NHR may become an effective predictor of frailty and its mortality.

Project description:BackgroundThe ratio between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR) is a reliable marker for assessing the risk linked to lipid metabolism disorders. Sarcopenia, characterized by age-related loss of muscle mass and strength/function, includes the assessment of muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle-specific strength. However, research into NHHR's relationship with low muscle mass risk remains unexplored.MethodsOur study utilized a cross-sectional approach, examining data derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018. Through multivariable linear and logistic regression, we investigated the relationships of the NHHR with muscle mass and low muscle mass. We visualized the results using smoothing curves and assessed threshold effects. We also performed various subgroup and sensitivity analyses.ResultsThis research encompassed 9,012 participants and demonstrated significant nonlinear associations between NHHR and ALMBMI or low muscle mass risk in a generalized additive model (GAM), pinpointing critical NHHR values (3.328 and 3.367) where changes in NHHR significantly impacted ALMBMI and low muscle mass risk.ConclusionsThe NHHR demonstrates a significant association with an increased risk of low muscle mass among middle-aged Americans. This ratio has potential as a predictive marker for low muscle mass. Further exploration of NHHR is expected to aid in advancing preventive and therapeutic measures for this condition.

Project description:PurposeThis study was conducted to investigate the distributions of the triglyceride (TG) to high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and total cholesterol (TC) to HDL-C ratio, and to explore their usefulness as markers of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adolescents.MethodsWe obtained data for 2,721 adolescents (1,436 boys and 1,285 girls) aged 10-18 years who participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2008 to 2010. International Diabetes Federation criteria were used to define MetS.ResultsThere were no significant gender-related differences in TG/HDL-C or TC/HDL-C ratios. These lipid ratios showed significant associations with homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and waist circumference. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve to identify MetS were 0.947 for TG/HDL-C and 0.924 for TC/HDL-C, which were higher than that of HOMA-IR (0.822). Optimal cutoff values (sensitivity, specificity) of TG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios for MetS prediction were 3.3 (85.7%, 89.9%), and 3.8 (92.9%, 82.8%), respectively. Odds ratio (OR; 95% confidence intervals [CIs]) for MetS in adolescents with TC/HDL-C ratio above the cutoff value was 14.8 (2.8-77.4), while that for TG/HDL-C ratio about the cutoff value was 30.6 (6.0-157.6). In adolescents who had both lipid ratios above the cutoff values, the OR (95% CI) for MetS was 36.2 (7.2-186.2).ConclusionTG/HDL-C and TC/HDL-C ratios are useful markers of metabolic syndrome with high predictive value in Korean adolescents.

Project description:PurposeThe ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-c) to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (NHHR) is a novel comprehensive lipid index. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the NHHR and the prevalence of hyperuricaemia (HUA) in the adult population of the U.S.MethodsThis cross-sectional study collected data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2007-2018). HUA was defined as a serum uric acid (SUA) concentration ≥ 7 mg/dL in men and ≥ 6 mg/dL in women. Multivariate logistic regression models and the restricted cubic spline (RCS) method were applied to examine the relationship between the NHHR and the risk of developing HUA. Subgroup analyses and interaction tests were also performed.ResultsThe prevalence of HUA increased with increasing NHHR values (9.01% vs. 13.38% vs. 17.31% vs. 25.79%, P < 0.001). The NHHR was independently correlated with the risk of developing HUA (OR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.05-1.16; P < 0.001). Furthermore, the risk of developing HUA was significantly greater among individuals with the highest NHHR quartile than among those with the lowest NHHR quartile (OR = 1.94, 95% CI: 1.62-2.33; P < 0.001). This relationship was consistent across subgroups. According to the RCS analysis, an inverted U-shaped relationship existed between the NHHR and the risk of developing HUA.ConclusionsThe NHHR was closely associated with an increased risk of developing HUA. Further studies on the NHHR could be beneficial for preventing and treating HUA.

Project description:BackgroundNumerous studies have demonstrated shared risk factors and pathophysiologic mechanisms between osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and platelets have long been recognized as crucial factors for cardiovascular health. The platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) combines platelet count and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) level, It is a novel biomarker for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. The platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) possibly reflects the balance between proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory states in the body. Therefore, we hypothesized that changes in PHR ratios may predict a predisposition to pro-inflammatory and increased bone resorption. However, the relationship between the platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) and bone mineral density (BMD) remains insufficiently understood. This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between the platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) index and bone mineral density (BMD).MethodsData from the NHANES 2005-2018 were analyzed, excluding adults with missing key variables and specific conditions. Nonlinear relationships were explored by fitting smoothed curves and generalized additive models, with threshold effects employed to calculate inflection points. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were conducted.ResultsThe study included 13,936 individuals with a mean age of 51.19 ± 16.65 years. Fitted smoothed curves and generalized additive models revealed a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped relationship between the two variables. Threshold effect analysis showed a significant negative association between PHR and total femur bone mineral density (BMD) beyond the inflection point of platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) 33.301. Subgroup analyses showed that a significant interaction between these two variables was observed only in the age and sex subgroups (P-interaction < 0.05).ConclusionsOur study identified a complex, nonlinear, inverted U-shaped relationship between platelet to HDL-C ratio (PHR) and total femur bone mineral density (BMD). These findings underscore the importance of maintaining optimal PHR levels to support bone health, especially in high-risk populations.

Project description:PurposeDiabetes is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases in the world, and its prevalence is expected to rise further. To help understand the utility of the ratio of non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (NHHR) in diabetes prevention, this large-scale longitudinal cohort study aims to explore the association of NHHR with diabetes risk and compare it as a risk predictor with conventional lipid parameters.Patients and methodsThis observational study extracted data from the NAGALA longitudinal cohort study conducted in Japan between 2004 and 2015. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between NHHR and the risk of diabetes. The dose-response relationship was analyzed by restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression and the potential risk threshold was estimated. The receiver operator characteristic curve (ROC) was used to analyze and calculate the predictive value and optimal threshold of NHHR and other conventional lipids for new-onset diabetes.ResultsOf the 15,464 people aged 18-79, 373 (2.41%) were diagnosed with new-onset diabetes during the study period, with a median age of 46 years. The sensitivity analysis based on multivariate adjustment showed that the independent positive correlation between diabetes and NHHR was stable in different populations. RCS and ROC analysis indicated that the association between NHHR and diabetes was non-linear, and the NHHR was a better marker for predicting diabetes risk than other conventional lipid parameters; Additionally, it is worth noting that an NHHR of approximately 2.74 may be the optimal threshold for intervention in diabetes risk.ConclusionIn the general population, NHHR is a better marker for predicting diabetes risk than conventional lipid parameters, and an NHHR of about 2.74 may be the optimal threshold for assessing diabetes risk.

Project description:ObjectiveIndividuals with psoriasis face significant physiological and psychological burdens, and their compliance and satisfaction with medication regimens are alarmingly low. In recent years, the comorbidity of psoriasis has become a research focus. This study aims to explore the potential correlation between psoriasis and the non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR).MethodsData from 17,941 participants of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning two intervals, 2003-2006 and 2009-2014, served as the foundation for this analysis. We used weighted logistic regression, stratified analysis, and restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve fitting to validate potential associations between NHHR and psoriasis risk.ResultsIn this investigation, the analysis of three different models highlighted elevated levels of the NHHR as a consistent risk factor for psoriasis. After adjusting for potential confounders, a positive correlation was observed between NHHR and the prevalence of psoriasis (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 1.01, 1.15, p < 0.05). Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to determine if variables such as age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, smoking status, alcohol consumption, diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke impact the association between NHHR and psoriasis. The findings indicated no significant modification of the NHHR-psoriasis link by these factors, as all interaction p-values were above 0.05. The RCS analysis uncovered a nonlinear relationship between psoriasis and the NHHR (p = 0.0176).ConclusionStatistical analysis confirms a significant correlation between the NHHR and the development of psoriasis, suggesting that NHHR may serve as a novel marker for predicting psoriasis risk. This correlation also provides insights for early health management strategies.
