Project description:The construction of polyurethanes (PUs) with sequence-controlled block structures remains a serious challenge. Here, we report the precise synthesis of PUs with desirable molecular weight, narrow molecular weight distribution, and controlled block sequences from commercially available monomers. The synthetic procedure is derived from a liquid-phase synthetic methodology, which involves diisocyanate-based iterative protocols in combination with a convergent strategy. Furthermore, a pair of multifunctional PUs with different sequence orders of cationic and anion segments were prepared. We show that the sequence order of functional segments presents an impact on the self-assembly behavior and results in unexpected surface charges of assembled micelles, thereby affecting the protein absorption, cell internalization, biodistribution and antitumor effect of the nanocarriers in vitro and in vivo. This work provides a versatile platform for the development of precise multiblock PUs with structural complexity and functional diversity, and will greatly facilitate the clinical translation of PUs in biomedicine. Polyurethanes (PUs) with different segment sequence orders are prepared using a precise synthetic platform, and the sequence order of functional segments plays a crucial role in regulating the surface charges and performance of nano-drug carriers.

Project description:Light-driven self-oscillators without electronic circuits or conventional heat engines are carbon-emission-free systems and hold promise for developing autonomous transmission pumps and self-swimming micromotors. Thermosensitive hydrogels as self-oscillators can be used in the exploitation of low-temperature heat sources and in medical applications since the driving temperature is close to body temperature. Here, the autonomous swinging of the hydrogel was achieved by irradiating a constant light beam onto a head laminated with two thermosensitive hydrogels with different transition temperatures. Hysteresis resulting from the transition point difference between the two hydrogels allowed the light-driven self-oscillation without self-shadowing from the irradiation. The proposed theoretical model and numerical simulations explain this light-driven continuous swing, and the results agree qualitatively well with the experiments. The multi layered thermosensitive hydrogel can work as an autonomous swing driven by stationary light.

Project description:Simulating the process of amyloid aggregation with atomic detail is a challenging task for various reasons. One of them is that it is difficult to parametrise a force field such that all protein states ranging from the folded through the unfolded to the aggregated state are represented with the same level of accuracy. Here, we test whether the consideration of electronic polarisability improves the description of the different states of Aβ16–22. Surprisingly, the CHARMM Drude polarisable force field is found to perform worse than its unpolarisable counterpart CHARMM36m. Sources for this failure of the Drude model are discussed. Simulating the process of amyloid aggregation is a hard task. We test whether the inclusion of electronic polarisability as done in CHARMM-Drude improves the modelling of Aβ16–22 aggregation and find it does not. Reasons for the failure are given.

Project description:In ionic liquids (ILs), the electric double layer (EDL) is where heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) occurs. Nevertheless, the relationship between the EDL structure and its kinetics has been rarely studied, especially for ET taking place in the inner Helmholtz plane (IHP). This is largely because of the lack of an appropriate model system for experiments. In this work, we determined the reorganization energy (λ) of Br2 reduction in a redox-active IL 1-ethyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium polybromide (MEPBr2n+1) based on the Marcus–Hush–Chidsey model. Exceptionally fast mass transport of Br2 in MEPBr2n+1 allows voltammograms to be obtained in which the current plateau is regulated by electron-transfer kinetics. This enables investigation of the microscopic environment in the IHP of the IL affecting electrocatalytic reactions through reorganization energy. As a demonstration, TiO2-modified Pt was employed to show pH-dependent reorganization energy, which suggests the switch of major ions at the IHP as a function of surface charges of electrodes. Ultrafast transport of Br2 in a polybromide redox-active ionic liquid allows electron transfer-limited voltammograms of Br2 reduction. The reorganization energy at the inner-Helmholtz plane can be determined based on the Marcus–Hush–Chidsey model.

Project description:Metal complexes used as sensitisers in dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs) are conventionally constructed using a push–pull strategy with electron-releasing and electron-withdrawing (anchoring) ligands. In a new paradigm we have designed new DπA ligands incorporating diarylaminophenyl donor substituents and phosphonic acid anchoring groups. These new ligands function as organic dyes. For two separate classes of DπA ligands with 2,2′-bipyridine metal-binding domains, the DSCs containing the copper(i) complexes [Cu(DπA)2]+ perform better than the push–pull analogues [Cu(DD)(AA)]+. Furthermore, we have shown for the first time that the complexes [Cu(DπA)2]+ perform better than the organic DπA dye in DSCs. The synthetic studies and the device performances are rationalised with the aid of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) studies. Two homoleptic copper(i) complexes with [Cu(DπA)2]+ design have been studied as sensitisers in DSCs and are superior to the DπA ligands and related heteroleptic complexes as dyes.

Project description:Fast and selective detection of contaminants plays a key role in meeting human health and environmental concerns. Herein, two groups of isostructural lanthanide MOFs, [Ln(Hpta)(oxalic acid)]·H2O (1-Eu, 2-Gd) and [Ln(pta)(oxalic acid)0.5(H2O)2]·2H2O (3-Eu, 4-Gd) (H2pta = 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid, C2O4− = oxalic acid), were synthesized by solvothermal method. Single crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that 1 and 2 are 3D neutral frameworks, while 3 and 4 consist of 2D layers with parallelogram holes and stack into 3D networks through O–H⋯N and O–H⋯O hydrogen bonding interactions. All complexes remain crystalline and stable below 400 °C, suggesting preeminent thermostability. Noteworthily, only 3 shows excellent chemical stability in water and organic solvent. Therefore, the solid-state fluorescence spectrum was used to characterize 3 which exhibited intense red luminescence. The N active sites in the pore channels of 3 are conducive to displaying a distinct quenching effect for Fe3+ cations in aqueous solutions, Cr2O72− anions in DMF and DMA solutions, and nitrofuran antibiotics in the DMF solvent. Overall, 3 is a prospective luminescent sensor for detecting Fe3+, Cr2O72− and nitrofuran antibiotics. Stable Eu-MOF constructed with 2-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid ligand can be used as a multifunctional sensing platform for selective detection of Fe3+, Cr2O72− and nitrofuran antibiotics.
