Wireless Magnetoelectrochemical Induction of Rotational Motion.

ABSTRACT: Electromagnetically induced rotation is a key process of many technological systems that are used in daily life, especially for energy conversion. In this context, the Lorentz force-induced deviation of charges is a crucial physical phenomenon to generate rotation. Herein, they combine the latter with the concept of bipolar electrochemistry to design a wireless magnetoelectrochemical rotor. Such a device can be considered as a wet analog of a conventional electric motor. The main driving force that propels this actuator is the result of the synergy between the charge-compensating ion flux along a bipolar electrode and an external magnetic field applied orthogonally to the surface of the object. The trajectory of the wirelessly polarized rotor can be controlled by the orientation of the magnetic field relative to the direction of the global electric field, producing a predictable clockwise or anticlockwise motion. Fine-tuning of the applied electric field allows for addressing conducting objects having variable characteristic lengths.

Project description:ObjectiveRotational Chair Test (RCT) is considered one of the most critical measures for vestibular functionality, which generally includes the sinusoidal harmonic acceleration test (SHAT), velocity step test (VST), and visual suppression (VS). The purpose of this study was to establish normal values for different age groups on the RCT and investigate whether motion susceptibility, such as with a history of motion sickness or migraine, has any effects on test metrics.MethodsOne hundred and nine subjects aged from 20 to 59 years who were free from neurotological and vestibular disorders were enrolled. According to the history of motion sickness or migraine, participants were divided into four groups: the motion sickness (MS) group (n = 13), the migraine group (n = 8), comorbidity group (n = 11), and the control group (n = 77). The 77 subjects without any history of MS and migraine were then further separated into four age groups: youth group (20-29 years), young and middle-aged group (30-39 years), middle-age group (40-49 years), and middle-age and elderly group (50-59 years). All participants underwent SHAT, VST, and VS, and a comprehensive set of metrics including gain, phase, asymmetry, time constant (TC), and Fixation Index were recorded.ResultsRegarding the VST and VS, no significant differences were observed either across the four groups (MS, migraine, comorbidity, and control group) or four age categories within the control group. For SHAT, VOR gain at the frequency of 0.01 Hz, VOR phase from 0.08 to 0.64 Hz, and asymmetry at 0.01, 0.16, and 0.64 Hz indicated significant differences among various age groups (P < 0.05 for all comparisons). The VOR phase lead was lower in the migraine and comorbidity group than that in the control group at 0.64 Hz (P = 0.027, P = 0.003, respectively).ConclusionsAge slightly affects the result of SHAT, but not for VST and VS. VOR gain is more susceptible to aging at low frequency, while the phase is opposite. Subjects with both migraine and motion sickness show abnormal velocity storage mechanisms. Phase bias should be considered when assessing motion susceptibility with the RCT. SHAT is more sensitive than VST in terms of reflecting motion susceptibility.

Project description:BackgroundThe characterization of limb biomechanics has broad implications for analyzing and managing motion in aging, sports, and disease. Motion capture videography and on-body wearable sensors are powerful tools for characterizing linear and angular motions of the body, though are often cumbersome, limited in detection, and largely non-portable. Here we examine the feasibility of utilizing an advanced wearable sensor, fabricated with stretchable electronics, to characterize linear and angular movements of the human arm for clinical feedback. A wearable skin-adhesive patch with embedded accelerometer and gyroscope (BioStampRC, MC10 Inc.) was applied to the volar surface of the forearm of healthy volunteers. Arms were extended/flexed for the range of motion of three different regimes: 1) horizontal adduction/abduction 2) flexion/extension 3) vertical abduction. Data were streamed and recorded revealing the signal "pattern" of movement in three separate axes. Additional signal processing and filtering afforded the ability to visualize these motions in each plane of the body; and the 3-dimensional motion envelope of the arm.ResultsEach of the three motion regimes studied had a distinct pattern - with identifiable qualitative and quantitative differences. Integration of all three movement regimes allowed construction of a "motion envelope," defining and quantifying motion (range and shape - including the outer perimeter of the extreme of motion - i.e. the envelope) of the upper extremity. The linear and rotational motion results from multiple arm motions match measurements taken with videography and benchtop goniometer.ConclusionsA conformal, stretchable electronic motion sensor effectively captures limb motion in multiple degrees of freedom, allowing generation of characteristic signatures which may be readily recorded, stored, and analyzed. Wearable conformal skin adherent sensor patchs allow on-body, mobile, personalized determination of motion and flexibility parameters. These sensors allow motion assessment while mobile, free of a fixed laboratory environment, with utility in the field, home, or hospital. These sensors and mode of analysis hold promise for providing digital "motion biomarkers" of health and disease.
