Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) have caught enormous attention owing to their distinctive properties, such as their high water solubility, tunable optical properties, and easy surface modification, which can be generally used for the detection of heavy metals and organic pollutants. Herein, nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon dots (NFCDs) were designed via a rapid, low-cost, and one-step microwave-assisted technique using DL-malic acid and levofloxacin. The NFCDs emitted intense green fluorescence under UV lighting, and the optical emission peak at 490 nm was observed upon a 280 nm excitation, with a high quantum yield of 21.03%. Interestingly, the spectral measurements illustrated excitation-independent and concentration-independent single-color fluorescence owing to the presence of nitrogen and fluorine elements in the surface functional groups. Additionally, the NFCDs were applied for the selective detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid based on the "turn-off" mode. The detection limits were determined as 1.03 and 4.22 µM, respectively. The quenching mechanisms were explored using the static quenching mechanism and the inner filter effect. Therefore, a NFCDs fluorescent probe with single color emission was successfully developed for the convenient and rapid detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid in environments.

Project description:The chloride ion is an essential ion in organisms, which plays an important role in maintaining normal cell functions. It is involved in many cell activities, such as cell proliferation, cell excitability regulation, immune response, and volume regulation. Accurate detection of the chloride ion can balance its concentration in vivo, which is of great significance. In this study, we developed a green fluorescent carbon quantum dot to detect chloride concentration through the "off-on" mechanism. First, the fluorescence of carbon dots is quenched by the complex of sulfhydryl and silver ions on the surface of carbon dots. Then, the addition of chloride ions pulls away the silver ions and restores the fluorescence. The fluorescence recovery is linearly related to the concentration of chloride ions, and the limit of detection is 2.817 μM, which is much lower than those of other reported chloride probes. Besides, cell and zebrafish experiments confirmed the biosafety and biocompatibility of the carbon dots, which provided a possibility for further applications in bioimaging in vivo.

Project description:Carbon dots (CDs) demonstrate very poor fluorescence quantum yield (QY). In this study, with the help of a hydrothermal method, we combined CDs with nitrogen and phosphorus elements belonging to the VA group (in the periodic table) to form heteroatom co-doped CDs, i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (NPCDs). These displayed a significant improvement in the QY (up to 84%), which was as much as four times than that of CDs synthesized by the same method. The as-prepared NPCDs could be used as an "off-on" fluorescence detector for the rapid and effective sensing of ferric ions (Fe3+) and catecholamine neurotransmitters (CNs) such as dopamine (DA), adrenaline (AD), and noradrenaline (NAD). The fluorescence of NPCDs was "turned off" and the emission wavelength was slightly red-shifted upon increasing the Fe3+ concentration. However, when CNs were incorporated, the fluorescence of NPCDs was recovered in a short response time; this indicated that CN concentration could be monitored, relying on enhancing the fluorescence signal of NPCDs. As a result, NPCDs are considered as a potential fluorescent bi-sensor for Fe3+ and CN detection. Particularly, in this research, we selected DA as the representative neurotransmitter of the CN group along with Fe3+ to study the sensing system based on NPCDs. The results exhibited good linear ranges with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.2 and 0.1 µM for Fe3+ and DA, respectively.

Project description:BackgroundCarbon dots (CDs) are widely used in cell imaging due to their excellent optical properties, biocompatibility and low toxicity. At present, most of the research on CDs focuses on biomedical application, while there are few studies on the application of microbial imaging.ResultsIn this study, B- and N-doped carbon dots (BN-CDs) were prepared from citric acid, ethylenediamine, and boric acid by microwave hydrothermal method. Based on BN-CDs labeling yeast, the dead or living of yeast cell could be quickly identified, and their growth status could also be clearly observed. In order to further observe the morphology of yeast cell under different lethal methods, six methods were used to kill the cells and then used BN-CDs to label the cells for imaging. More remarkably, imaging of yeast cell with ultrasound and antibiotics was significantly different from other imaging due to the overflow of cell contents. In addition, the endocytosis mechanism of BN-CDs was investigated. The cellular uptake of BN-CDs is dose, time and partially energy-dependent along with the involvement of passive diffusion. The main mechanism of endocytosis is caveolae-mediated.ConclusionBN-CDs can be used for long-term stable imaging of yeast, and the study provides basic research for applying CDs to microbiol imaging.

Project description:Detection of cholesterol and uric acid biomarkers is of great importance for clinical diagnosis of several serious diseases correlated with their variations in human blood serum. In this study, a new kind of well selective and highly sensitive ratiometric fluorescent probe for cholesterol and uric acid determination in human blood serum was innovatively developed on the basis of the inner filter effect (IFE) process of nitrogen, cobalt co-doped carbon dots (N,Co-CDs) with 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP). DAP was the oxidative product during the oxidation reaction between o-phenylenediamine and H2O2. Fluorescent magnetic N,Co-CDs possessing blue emission and magnetic property were prepared through a facile one-pot hydrothermal strategy by using citric acid, diethylenetriamine, and cobalt(II) chloride hexahydrate as precursors. N,Co-CDs exhibited good ferromagnetic property and excellent optical properties even in extremely harsh environmental conditions, implying the huge potential applications of such N,Co-CDs in biological areas. On the basis of the IFE process between N,Co-CDs and DAP, N,Co-CDs were applied to establish ratiometric fluorescent probes for the indirect detection of cholesterol and uric acid that participated in enzyme-catalyzed H2O2-generation reactions. The established IFE-based fluorescent probes exhibited relatively low detection limits of 3.6 nM for cholesterol and 3.4 nM for uric acid, respectively. The fluorescent probe was successfully utilized for the determination of cholesterol and uric acid in human blood serum with satisfying results, which provided an informed perspective on the applications of such doped CDs to explore the specific and sensitive nanoprobe in disease diagnoses and clinical therapy.

Project description:Renewable biowaste-derived carbon dots have garnered immense interest owing to their exceptional optical, fluorescence, chemical, and environmentally friendly attributes, which have been exploited for the detection of metals, non-metals, and organics in the environment. In the present study, water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized via facile green microwave pyrolysis of pine-cone biomass as precursors, without any chemical additives. The synthesized fluorescent pine-cone carbon dots (PC-CDs) were spherical in shape with a bimodal particle-size distribution (average diameters of 15.2 nm and 42.1 nm) and a broad absorption band of between 280 and 350 nm, attributed to a π-π* and n-π* transition. The synthesized PC-CDs exhibited the highest fluorescent (FL) intensity at an excitation wavelength of 360 nm, with maximum emission of 430 nm. The synthesized PC-CDs were an excellent fluorescent probe for the selective detection of Cu2+ in aqueous solution, amidst the presence of other metal ions. The FL intensity of PC-CDs was exceptionally quenched in the presence of Cu2+ ions, with a low detection limit of 0.005 μg/mL; this was largely ascribed to Cu2+ ion binding interactions with the enriched surface functional groups on the PC-CDs. As-synthesized PC-CDs are an excellent, cost effective, and sensitive probe for detecting and monitoring Cu2+ metal ions in wastewater.

Project description:An "on-off-on" fluorescent phosphorus/nitrogen co-doped carbon dot (PNCD) probe was explored for the determination of Cr(vi) and dopamine resulting from the inner filter effect (IFE). The blue-emitting carbon dots with high quantum yields of 25.47% as well as a narrow size distribution were synthesized by a rapid, convenient route using H3PO4 and ethylenediamine as the precursors without any surface passivation. A wide linear region in the range of 7-70 μM with a detection limit of 0.71 μM was achieved for Cr(vi). Moreover, the proper reductants can weaken the inner filter effect to recover the PNCD fluorescence by converting Cr(vi) into Cr(iii). Therefore, the PNCDs/Cr(vi) hybrid could also be used as an "off-on" fluorescent probe for detecting dopamine (DA) with a detection limit of 0.49 μM. Consequently, the PNCDs could serve as a powerful fluorescent bi-sensor for detection of both Cr(vi) and DA in practical applications.

Project description:Fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have held great promise in analytical and environmental fields thanks to their congenitally fascinating virtues. However, low quantum yield (QY) and modest fluorescent stability still restrict their practical applications. In this investigation, a green hydrothermal strategy has been devised to produce water-soluble nitrogen/phosphorus (N/P) co-doped CQDs from edible Eleocharis dulcis with multi-heteroatoms. Without any additives and further surface modifications, the resultant CQDs exhibited tunable photoluminescence just by changing hydrothermal temperatures. Appealingly, they showed remarkable excitation-dependent emission, high QY, superior fluorescence stability, and long lifetime. By extending the CQDs solutions as a "fluorescent ink", we found their potential application in the anti-counterfeit field. When further evaluated as a fluorescence sensor, the N/P co-doped CQDs demonstrated a wide-range determination capability in inorganic cations, and especially the remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for elemental Fe3+. More significantly, the green methodology we developed here can be readily generalized for scalable production of high-quality CQDs with tunable emission for versatile applications.

Project description:Cadmium (Cd2+) and mercury ions (Hg2+) are essential for the quality control of food samples because of their serious toxicity to human health, but the effective and simple strategy for their parallel detection remains challenging. In this paper, a rapid and simple parallel detection method for Cd2+ and Hg2+ was developed using carbon dots (CDs) as fluorescent sensors. A one-step hydrothermal method with a single precursor l-arginine as both the carbon and nitrogen sources was employed to prepare nitrogen-doped CDs (N-CDs). N-CDs exhibited a uniform particle size and excitation-independent fluorescence emission. The maximum emission wavelength of N-CDs was observed at 354 nm with the excitation wavelength at 295 nm. The quantum yield of N-CDs reached as high as 71.6% in water. By using sodium diphosphate and phytic acid as masking agents, the fluorescent sensor can be quenched by Cd2+ and Hg2+ in the linear range of 0-26.8 μM and 0-49.9 μM within 5 min. Other common ions in farm products showed no significant effect on the fluorescence intensity of the sensing system. The results demonstrated that the sensing system had good selectivity and sensitivity for Cd2+ and Hg2+. The detection limits for Cd2+ and Hg2+ were 0.20 and 0.188 μM, respectively. In addition, the fluorescent sensor had been successfully applied for the detection of Cd2+ and Hg2+ in fruits and vegetables, and the recoveries were 86.44-109.40% and 86.62-115.32%, respectively. The proposed fluorescent sensor provides a rapid, simple, and sensitive detection method for Cd2+ and Hg2+ in food samples and thus a novel quantitative detection method for heavy metal ions in foods.

Project description:In this study, highly fluorescent sulfur and nitrogen co-doped carbon quantum dots (SN-CQDs) were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method using thiosemicarbazide and citric acid as starting materials. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were applied to characterize the prepared SN-CQDs. The synthesized SN-CQDs' maximum fluorescence emission was obtained at 430 nm after excitation at 360 nm. Rifampicin (RFP), tinidazole (TNZ), ornidazole (ONZ), and metronidazole (MNZ) all quantitatively and selectively quenched the SN-CQDs' native fluorescence, which was the base-for their-spectrofluorimetric estimation without the need for any tedious pre-treatment steps or high-cost instrumentation. SN-CQDs demonstrated a "turn-off" fluorescence response to RFP, TNZ, ONZ, and MNZ over the ranges of 1.0-30.0, 10.0-200.0, 6.0-200.0, and 5.0-100.0 μM with detection limits of 0.31, 1.76, 0.57, and 0.75 μM and quantitation limits of 0.93, 5.32, 1.74, and 2.28 μM respectively. The suggested method was successfully used to determine the investigated drugs in their commercial dosage forms. The method was further extended to their determination in spiked human plasma samples, with satisfactory mean % recoveries (99.44-100.29) and low % RSD values (< 4.52). The mechanism of fluorescence quenching was studied and discussed. The suggested method was validated in accordance with ICH recommendations.
