Compositions with a high yttria content undergo a transition from p-type to n-type behavior at voltages in the range 2.4 to 10 V, which also depends on oxygen partial pressure. Surface reactions have a direct influence on bulk electronic conductivities, with possible implications for voltage-induced flash phenomena and resistive switching.

Project description:In this work, a set of density-functional tight-binding (DFTB) parameters for the Zr-Zr, Zr-O, Y-Y, Y-O, and Zr-Y interactions was developed for bulk and surface simulations of ZrO2 (zirconia), Y2O3 (yttria), and yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) materials. The parameterization lays the ground work for realistic simulations of zirconia-, yttria-, and YSZ-based electrolytes in solid oxide fuel cells and YSZ-based catalysts on long timescales and relevant size scales. The parameterization was validated for the zirconia and yttria polymorphs observed under standard conditions based on density functional theory calculations and experimental data. Additionally, we performed DFTB-based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to compute structural and vibrational properties of these materials. The results show that the parameters can give a qualitatively correct phase ordering of zirconia, where the tetragonal phase is more stable than the cubic phase at a lower temperature. The lattice parameters are only slightly overestimated by 0.05-0.1 Å (2% error), still within the typical accuracy of first-principles methods. Additionally, the MD results confirm that zirconia and yttria phases are stable against transformations under standard conditions. The parameterization also predicts that vibrational spectra are within the range of 100-1000 cm-1 for zirconia and 100-800 cm-1 for yttria, which is in good agreement with predictions both from full quantum mechanics and a recently developed classical force field. To further demonstrate the advantage of the developed DFTB parameters in terms of computational resources, we conducted DFTB/MD simulations of the YSZ4 and YS12 models containing approximately 750 atoms.

Project description:The capacity of electroactive bacteria to exchange electrons with electroconductive materials has been explored during the last two decades as part of a new field called electromicrobiology. Such microbial metabolism has been validated to enhance the bioremediation of wastewater pollutants. In contrast with standard materials like rods, plates, or felts made of graphite, we have explored the use of an alternative strategy using a fluid-like electrode as part of a microbial electrochemical fluidized bed reactor (ME-FBR). After verifying the low adsorption capacity of the pharmaceutical pollutants on the fluid-bed electrode [7.92 ± 0.05% carbamazepine (CBZ) and 9.42 ± 0.09% sulfamethoxazole (SMX)], our system showed a remarkable capacity to outperform classical solutions for removing pollutants (more than 80%) from the pharmaceutical industry like CBZ and SMX. Moreover, the ME-FBR performance revealed the impact of selecting an anode potential by efficiently removing both pollutants at + 200 mV. The high TOC removal efficiency also demonstrated that electrostimulation of electroactive bacteria in ME-FBR could overcome the expected microbial inhibition due to the presence of CBZ and SMX. Cyclic voltammograms revealed the successful electron transfer between microbial biofilm and the fluid-like electrode bed throughout the polarization tests. Finally, Vibrio fischeri-based ecotoxicity showed a 70% reduction after treating wastewater with a fluid-like anode (+ 400 mV), revealing the promising performance of this bioelectrochemical approach.

Project description:Repeated non-diffuse optical imaging of the brain is difficult. This is due to the fact that the cranial bone is highly scattering and thus a strong optical barrier. Repeated craniotomies increase the risk of complications and may disrupt the biological systems being imaged. We previously introduced a potential solution in the form of a transparent ceramic cranial implant called the Window to the Brain (WttB) implant. This implant is made of nanocrystalline Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (nc-YSZ), which possesses the requisite mechanical strength to serve as a permanent optical access window in human patients. In this present study, we demonstrate repeated brain imaging of n = 5 mice using both OCT and LSI across the WttB implant over 4 weeks. The main objectives are to determine if the WttB implant allows for chronic OCT imaging, and to shed further light on the question of whether optical access provided by the WttB implant remains stable over this duration in the body. The Window to the Brain implant allowed for stable repeated imaging of the mouse brain with Optical Coherence Tomography over 28 days, without loss of signal intensity. Repeated Laser Speckle Imaging was also possible over this timeframe, but signal to noise ratio and the sharpness of vessels in the images decreased with time. This can be partially explained by elevated blood flow during the first imaging session in response to trauma from the surgery, which was also detected by OCT flow imaging. These results are promising for long-term optical access through the WttB implant, making feasible chronic in vivo studies in multiple neurological models of brain disease.

Project description:Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) is a highly promising electrolyte material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). We investigated the conductivity-enhancing effect of nanosized YSZ to explore key techniques to decrease the operating temperature. YSZ nanoparticles ranging from 2 to 4 nm were synthesized with oleate groups by the hydrothermal method at various oleate/metal ion ratios (Ole/M = 1.00, 0.75, and 0.50). The nanoparticles were sintered, and the ionic conductivities were evaluated. The 1.00 Ole/M sample exhibited high dispersibility in cyclohexane and showed a nearly monodispersed distribution. The other samples possessed agglomerated nanoparticles. The sintered YSZ nanoparticles had densities of 3.36-2.80 g/cm3 and ionic conductivities of 2.52-1.16 mS/cm at 750 °C, which are higher than those of commercial 8 mol % YSZ. Furthermore, the sintered YSZ nanoparticles exhibited higher activation energies than the commercial samples in the lower temperature range (550-650 °C). The ionic conductivity enhancement despite the high activation energy is likely due to the increased grain boundary volume. This study demonstrated the successful production of YSZ with high ionic conductivity and sinterability upon sintering at 1050 °C using YSZ nanoparticles.

Project description:Materials for applications in hostile environments, such as nuclear reactors or radioactive waste immobilization, require extremely high resistance to radiation damage, such as resistance to amorphization or volume swelling. Nanocrystalline materials have been reported to present exceptionally high radiation-tolerance to amorphization. In principle, grain boundaries that are prevalent in nanomaterials could act as sinks for point-defects, enhancing defect recombination. In this paper we present evidence for this mechanism in nanograined Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ), associated with the observation that the concentration of defects after irradiation using heavy ions (Kr(+), 400 keV) is inversely proportional to the grain size. HAADF images suggest the short migration distances in nanograined YSZ allow radiation induced interstitials to reach the grain boundaries on the irradiation time scale, leaving behind only vacancy clusters distributed within the grain. Because of the relatively low temperature of the irradiations and the fact that interstitials diffuse thermally more slowly than vacancies, this result indicates that the interstitials must reach the boundaries directly in the collision cascade, consistent with previous simulation results. Concomitant radiation-induced grain growth was observed which, as a consequence of the non-uniform implantation, caused cracking of the nano-samples induced by local stresses at the irradiated/non-irradiated interfaces.

Project description:The interfacial hydration structure of yttria-stabilized cubic zirconia (110) surface in contact with water was determined with ~0.5 Å resolution by high-resolution X-ray reflectivity measurement. The terminal layer shows a reduced electron density compared to the following substrate lattice layers, which indicates there are additional defects generated by metal depletion as well as intrinsic oxygen vacancies, both of which are apparently filled by water species. Above this top surface layer, two additional adsorbed layers are observed forming a characteristic interfacial hydration structure. The first adsorbed layer shows abnormally high density as pure water and likely includes metal species, whereas the second layer consists of pure water. The observed interfacial hydration structure seems responsible for local equilibration of the defective surface in water and eventually regulating the long-term degradation processes. The multitude of water interactions with the zirconia surface results in the complex but highly ordered interfacial structure constituting the reaction front.

Project description:As a high-quality thermal barrier coating material, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) can effectively reduce the temperature of the collective materials to be used on the surface of gas turbine hot-end components. The bonding strength between YSZ and the substrate is also one of the most important factors for the applications. Herein, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) and support vector regression (SVR) were used to construct a machine learning model between YSZ coating bonding strength and atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) process parameters. First, GMM was used to expand the original 8 data points to 400 with the R value of leave-one-out cross-validation improved from 0.690 to 0.990. Then, the specific effects of APS process parameters were explored through Shapley additive explanations and sensitivity analysis. Principal component analysis was used to explain the constructed model and obtain the optimized area with a high bonding strength. After experimental validation, the results showed that under the APS process parameters of a current of 617 A, a voltage of 65 V, a H2 flow of 3 L min-1, and a thickness of 200 μm, the bonding strength increased by more than 19% to 55.5 MPa compared with the original maximum value of 46.6 MPa, indicating that the constructed GMM-SVR model can accurately predict the bonding strength of YSZ coating.

Project description:Monodisperse ceria-zirconia nanoparticles have attracted much attention as potential high-performance catalysts. Acidic aqueous solutions are generally used for peptizing aggregated precipitates during the fabrication of disperse nanoparticles. However, the peptization process requires multiple hours of aging, which significantly decreases the production efficiency. Hence, various researchers have attempted to eliminate this stage altogether by performing a coprecipitation process under ambient conditions using common salts as the starting materials. In this work, we report a continuous and direct technique for the fabrication of monodisperse composite oxide nanoparticles via coprecipitation inside a novel high-shear agitation reactor without aging. Using this method, monodisperse ceria-zirconia-yttria composite oxide nanoparticles with diameters of 3 nm were successfully synthesized.

Project description:Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) nanospheres were synthesized by calcination at 900 °C after the adsorption of Y3+ ions into the pores of a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The synthesized 3YSZ (zirconia doped with 3 mol% Y2O3), 8YSZ (8 mol% Y2O3), and 30YSZ (30 mol% Y2O3) nanospheres were found to exhibit uniform sizes and shapes. Complex permittivity and complex permeability were carried out in K-band (i.e., 18-26.5 GHz) to determine their suitability for use as low-k materials in 5G communications. The real and imaginary parts of the permittivity of the sintered 3YSZ were determined to be 21.24 and 0.12, respectively, while those of 8YSZ were 22.80 and 0.16, and those of 30YSZ were 7.16 and 0.38. Control of the real part of the permittivity in the sintered YSZ was facilitated by modifying the Y2O3 content, thereby rendering this material an electronic ceramic with potential for use in high-frequency 5G communications due to its excellent mechanical properties, high chemical resistance, and good thermal stability. In particular, it could be employed as an exterior material for electronic communication products requiring the minimization of information loss.
