The prevalence of fibromyalgia in adults at Al-Karak Jordan: a cross-sectional study.

ABSTRACT:

Introduction

Fibromyalgia is a chronic and intricate musculoskeletal disorder characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and tenderness in specific anatomical regions. Although its prevalence varies among populations, understanding the prevalence in different geographical areas is crucial for healthcare planning. This cross-sectional study aims to determine the prevalence of fibromyalgia in adults residing in Al-Karak, Jordan. The city's unique demographic and environmental characteristics may influence the occurrence of fibromyalgia among its adult population. The study aims to address gaps in knowledge, provide localized insights, and shed light on fibromyalgia's burden on the community's health. Accurate prevalence data aids healthcare planning and resource allocation.

Methods

This research collected data from 965 social media participants using Google Forms. The American College of Rheumatology survey criteria for diagnosing fibromyalgia were used. To investigate the predictive value of various parameters, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed.

Results

The study found a 26.5% prevalence of fibromyalgia in the studied population. Female gender, mental health illnesses, and comorbidities like irritable bowel syndrome, psychiatric disorders, and rheumatological and neurological diseases were significantly associated with fibromyalgia. Age, BMI, marital status, employment status, and certain comorbidities did not show statistically significant predictive value.

Conclusion

This study sheds light on fibromyalgia's prevalence and associated factors in the Al-Karak population. The identified predictors highlight the necessity for comprehensive healthcare strategies and interventions to mitigate the disease burden. These findings aid policymakers and healthcare professionals in planning and implementing effective measures for fibromyalgia management and prevention. Further research is warranted to deepen our understanding of fibromyalgia's complexity and its implications in this region.

Project description:BackgroundPreliminary evidence suggests that psychological trauma, especially childhood trauma, is a risk factor for the onset of fibromyalgia (FM).ObjectiveThe main objective of this study consisted of evaluating the prevalence and detailed characteristics of psychological trauma in a sample of patients with FM, the chronology of trauma across the lifespan, and its clinical symptoms. We also calculated whether childhood trauma could predict the relationship with different clinical variables.MethodEighty-eight females underwent an interview to assess sociodemographic data, psychiatric comorbidities, level of pain, FM impact, clinical symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, quality of life, and psychological trauma.ResultsThe majority of participants (71.5%) met the diagnostic criteria for current post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Participants reported having suffered traumatic events throughout their lifespan, especially in childhood and early adolescence, in the form of emotional abuse, emotional neglect, sexual abuse, and physical abuse. Traumatic events predict both poor quality of life and a level of pain in adulthood. All patients showed clinically relevant levels of anxiety, depression, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, and pain, as well as somatic comorbidities and poor quality of life. Pain levels predicted anxiety, depression, dissociation, and insomnia symptoms. 84% of the sample suffered one or more traumatic events prior to the onset of pain.ConclusionsOur data highlight the clinical complexity of patients with FM and the role of childhood trauma in the onset and maintenance of FM, as well as the high comorbidity between anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and FM. Our data also supports FM patients experiencing further retraumatization as they age, with an extremely high prevalence of current PTSD in our sample. These findings underscore the need for multidisciplinary programs for FM patients to address their physical pain and their psychiatric and somatic conditions, pay special attention to the assessment of psychological trauma, and provide trauma-focused interventions. Project description:BackgroundKnee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder of the knee, and its progression, influenced by multifactorial predisposing factors such as age, BMI, and physical activity, often results in significant limitations in day-to-day activities and deterioration of quality of life. Although the prevalence and predisposing factors of OA are well-documented globally, this study is distinct in its focus on the semi-urban population of Al Madam City, Sharjah. The unique socio-cultural and occupational characteristics of this community provide an opportunity to identify localized risk factors and their impact on OA prevalence, offering insights that can inform tailored healthcare strategies.ObjectiveThe present study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of OA and its associated predisposing factors among the population of Al Madam, Sharjah.MethodsA community-based cross-sectional study was conducted to estimate the prevalence of knee OA in the population of Al Madam City, Sharjah. This study was conducted in twelve villages. 1300 participants were recruited through convenience sampling using a screening questionnaire survey to identify individuals with knee OA. The Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire was used, with an additional questionnaire consisting of questions related to its predisposing factors.ResultsThe prevalence of knee OA was 12.9% in Al-Madam City, Sharjah. Predisposing factors, such as age (χ2:314.900), sex (χ2:13.581), nationality (χ2:76.657), BMI (χ2:86.174), physical activity levels (χ2:11.099), previous knee injury (χ2:657.715), level of education (χ2:259.906), and occupation with the sedentary job (χ2:193.911), were found to be associated with the prevalence of knee OA.ConclusionsThis study highlights that the prevalence of knee OA in Al Madam City is 12.9%, with significant associations observed between knee OA and factors such as age, sex, BMI, physical activity levels, education, and previous knee trauma. The findings underline the impact of the city's unique socio-cultural and occupational characteristics, such as high representation of labor-intensive jobs and limited leisure activity options, on the development of knee OA.

Project description:BackgroundHypertension (HTN) is a common comorbidity among diabetic patients. Studies reported that HTN prevalence in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) depends on many risk factors related to the disease (the type and duration of DM), patients (age, sex, race/ethnicity, BMI), and medical history (glycemic control, renal problems). Best to our knowledge, limited evidence is available in this regard among Jordanian population.ObjectivesThis retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of HTN among patients with DM in Jordan and factors that might be associated with the concurrence of both diseases.Materials and methodsA cross-sectional study was conducted to determine HTN prevalence and risk factors among diabetic outpatients in Jordan. Patients were asked about their sociodemographic information and medical history. A descriptive analysis was used to determine HTN prevalence and a fit bivariate logistic regression model was used to identify the significant risk factors of HTN in patients with type 2 DM (T2DM).ResultsHTN was found to be concurrently occurring in approximately 80% of T2DM patients. This was found to increase with age. In addition, dyslipidemia, gout disease, ischemic heart disease, renal impairment, or a family history of HTN were found to be associated with the concurrence of HTN among T2DM patients.ConclusionFindings from this study highlight the need for proper monitoring of DM patients to reduce the co-occurrence of HTN. Specific attention should be directed to control the patients' glycemic and lipid profiles as well as the cardiac and renal health using non-pharmacological and pharmacological measures. This is of particular importance in T2DM patients at old age and with family history of HTN, to reduce patients' deterioration. Results from this study will also be informative for the development of public health strategies to increase the awareness of the general population regarding T2DM and HTN since both diseases are very common among Jordanian population.
