Project description:Polymer composite materials with hierarchical porous structure have been advancing in many different application fields due to excellent physico-chemical properties. However, their synthesis continues to be a highly energy-demanding and environmentally unfriendly process. This work reports a unique water based synthesis of monolithic 3D reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite structures reinforced with poly(methyl methacrylate) polymer nanoparticles functionalized with epoxy functional groups. The method is based on reduction-induced self-assembly process performed at mild conditions. The textural properties and the surface chemistry of the monoliths were varied by changing the reaction conditions and quantity of added polymer to the structure. Moreover, the incorporation of the polymer into the structures improves the solvent resistance of the composites due to the formation of crosslinks between the polymer and the rGO. The monolithic composites were evaluated for selective capture of CO2. A balance between the specific surface area and the level of functionalization was found to be critical for obtaining high CO2 capacity and CO2/N2 selectivity. The polymer quantity affects the textural properties, thus lowering its amount the specific surface area and the amount of functional groups are higher. This affects positively the capacity for CO2 capture, thus, the maximum achieved was in the range 3.56-3.85 mmol/g at 1 atm and 25 °C.

Project description:Using reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) as a multifunctional conductive binder, a simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach is developed to fabricate activated carbon/reduced graphene oxide (AC/r-GO) composite electrodes for supercapacitors with outstanding performance. In such a composite, r-GO provides several much needed critical functions: r-GO not only serves as the binder material improving the AC particle/particle cohesion and electrode-film/substrate adhesion but also improves the electrical conductivity of the composite and provides additional surfaces for ion adsorption. Furthermore, during electrode fabrication, initial GO precursor functions as an effective dispersant for AC, resulting in a stable electrode material slurry. Employing characterization by advanced microscopy techniques, we show that AC and r-GO assemble into an interconnected network structure, resulting in a composite with high specific capacitance, excellent rate capability, and long cycling life stability. Such high-performance electrodes coupled with their relatively simple, scalable, and low-cost fabrication process thereby provide a clear pathway toward large-scale implementation of supercapacitors.

Project description:This study synthesized a highly efficient KOH-treated sunflower stem activated carbon (KOH-SSAC) using a two-step pyrolysis process and chemical activation using KOH. The resulting material exhibited exceptional properties, such as a high specific surface area (452 m2/g) and excellent adsorption capacities for phenol (333.03 mg/g) and bisphenol A (BPA) (365.81 mg/g). The adsorption process was spontaneous and exothermic, benefiting from the synergistic effects of hydrogen bonding, electrostatic attraction, and stacking interactions. Comparative analysis also showed that KOH-SSAC performed approximately twice as well as sunflower stem biochar (SSB), indicating its potential for water treatment and pollutant removal applications. The study suggests the exploration of optimization strategies to further enhance the efficiency of KOH-SSAC in large-scale scenarios. These findings contribute to the development of improved materials for efficient water treatment and pollution control.

Project description:The process of carbon dioxide capture and storage is seen as a critical strategy to mitigate the so-called greenhouse effect and the planetary climate changes associated with it. In this study, we investigated the CO2 adsorption capacity of various microporous carbon materials originating from palm date seeds (PDS) using green chemistry synthesis. The PDS was used as a precursor for the hydrochar and activated carbon (AC). Typically, by using the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process, we obtained a powder that was then subjected to an activation step using KOH, H3PO4 or CO2, thereby producing the activated HTC-PDS samples. Beyond their morphological and textural characteristics, we investigated the chemical composition and lattice ordering. Most PDS-derived powders have a high surface area (>1000 m2 g-1) and large micropore volume (>0.5 cm3 g-1). However, the defining characteristic for the maximal CO2 uptake (5.44 mmol g-1, by one of the alkaline activated samples) was the lattice restructuring that occurred. This work highlights the need to conduct structural and elemental analysis of carbon powders used as gas adsorbents and activated with chemicals that can produce graphite intercalation compounds.

Project description:In this work, we report the preparation of polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based activated carbon nanofibers composited with different concentrations of reduced graphene oxide (rGO/ACNF) (1%, 5%, and 10% relative to PAN weight) by a simple electrospinning method. The electrospun nanofibers (NFs) were carbonized and physically activated to obtain activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs). Texture, surface and elemental properties of the pristine ACNFs and composites were characterized using various techniques. In comparison to pristine ACNF, the incorporation of rGO led to changes in surface and textural characteristics such as specific surface area (SBET), total pore volume (Vtotal), and micropore volume (Vmicro) of 373 m2/g, 0.22 cm3/g, and 0.15 cm3/g, respectively, which is much higher than the pristine ACNFs (e.g., SBET = 139 m2/g). The structural and morphological properties of the pristine ACNFs and their composites were studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD), and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) respectively. Carbon dioxide (CO2) adsorption on the pristine ACNFs and rGO/ACNF composites was evaluated at different pressures (5, 10, and 15 bars) based on static volumetric adsorption. At 15 bar, the composite with 10% of rGO (rGO/ACNF0.1) that had the highest SBET, Vtotal, and Vmicro, as confirmed with BET model, exhibited the highest CO2 uptake of 58 mmol/g. These results point out that both surface and texture have a strong influence on the performance of CO2 adsorption. Interestingly, at p < 10 bar, the adsorption process of CO2 was found to be quite well fitted by pseudo-second order model (i.e., the chemisorption), whilst at 15 bar, physisorption prevailed, which was explained by the pseudo-first order model.

Project description:Among the current CO2 capture technologies, membrane gas separation has many inherent advantages over other conventional techniques. However, fabricating gas separation membranes with both high CO2 permeance and high CO2/N2 selectivity, especially under wet conditions, is a challenge. In this study, sub-20-nm thick, layered graphene oxide (GO)-based hollow fiber membranes with grafted, brush-like CO2-philic agent alternating between GO layers are prepared by a facile coating process for highly efficient CO2/N2 separation under wet conditions. Piperazine, as an effective CO2-philic agent, is introduced as a carrier-brush into the GO nanochannels with chemical bonding. The membrane exhibits excellent separation performance under simulated flue gas conditions with CO2 permeance of 1,020 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity as high as 680, demonstrating its potential for CO2 capture from flue gas. We expect this GO-based membrane structure combined with the facile coating process to facilitate the development of ultrathin GO-based membranes for CO2 capture.

Project description:The nanosheet stacking phenomenon in graphene thin films significantly deteriorates their gas-sensing performance. This nanosheet stacking issue should be solved and reduced to enhance the gas detection sensitivity. In this study, we report a novel ammonia (NH3) gas sensor based on holey graphene thin films. The precursors, holey graphene oxide (HGO) nanosheets, were prepared by etching graphene under UV irradiation with Fenton reagent (Fe2+/Fe3+/H2O2). Holey graphene was prepared by the reduction of HGO (rHGO) with pyrrole. Holey graphene thin-film gas sensors were prepared by depositing rHGO suspensions onto the electrodes. The resulting sensing devices show excellent response, sensitivity, and selectivity to NH3. The resistance change is 2.81% when the NH3 level is as low as 1 ppm, whereas the resistance change is 11.32% when the NH3 level is increased to 50 ppm. Furthermore, the rHGO thin-film gas sensor could be quickly restored to their initial states without the stimulation with an IR lamp. In addition, the devices showed excellent repeatability. The resulting rHGO thin-film gas sensor has a great potential for applications in numerous sensing fields because of its low cost, low energy consumption, and outstanding sensing performance.

Project description:A facile one-step microwave-assisted chemical method has been successfully used for the synthesis of Cu2O/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) composites. Photocatalytic CO2 reduction was then investigated on the junction under ambient conditions. The RGO coating dramatically increases Cu2O activity for CO2 photoreduction to result in a nearly six times higher activity than the optimized Cu2O and 50 times higher activity than the Cu2O/RuOx junction in the 20(th) hour. Furthermore, an apparent initial quantum yield of approximately 0.34 % at 400 nm has been achieved by the Cu2O/RGO junction for CO2 photoreduction. The photocurrent of the junction is nearly double that of the blank Cu2O photocathode. The improved activity together with the enhanced stability of Cu2O is attributed to the efficient charge separation and transfer to RGO as well as the protection function of RGO, which was proved by XRD, SEM, TEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photo-electrochemical, photoluminescence, and impedance characterizations. This study further presents useful information for other photocatalyst modification for efficient CO2 reduction without the need for a noble-metal co-catalyst.

Project description:Porosity is the key factor in determining the CO2 capture capacity for porous carbon-based adsorbents, especially narrow micropores of less than 1.0 nm. Unfortunately, this desired feature is still a great challenge to tailor micropores by an effective, low-corrosion, and environmentally friendly activating agent. Herein, we reported a suitable dynamic porogen of CuCl2 to engineer microporous carbons rich in narrow micropores of <1.0 nm for solving the above problem. The porosity can be easily tuned by varying the concentration of the CuCl2 porogen. The resultant porous carbons exhibited a multiscale micropore size, high micropore volume, and suitable surface nitrogen doping content, especially high-proportioned ultromicropores of <0.7 nm. As adsorbents for capturing CO2, the obtained microporous carbons possess satisfactory CO2 uptake, moderate heat of CO2 adsorption, reasonable CO2/N2 selectivity, and easy regeneration. Our work proposes an alternative way to design porous carbon-based adsorbents for efficiently capturing CO2 from the postcombustion flue gases. More importantly, this work opens up an almost-zero cost and industrially friendly route to convert biowaste into high-added-value adsorbents for CO2 capture in an industrial practical application.

Project description:The chemical reduction process of graphene oxide combined with a mild and controllable thermal treatment under vacuum at 200 °C for 4 hours provided a cost-effective, scalable, and high-yield route for Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO) industrial production and became a potential candidate for producing electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. We investigated graphite, and RGO using l-ascorbic acid and Sodium borohydride before and after thermal treatment by carefully evaluating the chemical and morphological structures. The thermally treated l-ascorbic Acid reduction route (TCRGOL) conductivity was 2.14 × 103 S m-1 and total shielding efficiency (SET) based on mass loadings per area of shielding was 94 dB with about one-tenth less graphite weight and surpassing other graphene reduction mechanisms in the frequency range of 8.2-12.4 GHz, i.e., X-band, at room temperature while being tested using the waveguide line technique. The developed treatment represents valuable progress in the path to chemical reduction using a safe reducing agent and offering superior quality RGO rarely achieved with the top-down technique, providing a high EMI shielding performance.
