Mapping of secondary forest age in China using stacked generalization and Landsat time series.

ABSTRACT: A national distribution of secondary forest age (SFA) is essential for understanding the forest ecosystem and carbon stock in China. While past studies have mainly used various change detection algorithms to detect forest disturbance, which cannot adequately characterize the entire forest landscape. This study developed a data-driven approach for improving performances of the Vegetation Change Tracker (VCT) and Continuous Change Detection and Classification (CCDC) algorithms for detecting the establishment of forest stands. An ensemble method for mapping national-scale SFA by determining the establishment time of secondary forest stands using change detection algorithms and dense Landsat time series was proposed. A dataset of national secondary forest age for China (SFAC) for 1 to 34 and with a 30-m spatial resolution was produced from the optimal ensemble model. This dataset provides national, continuous spatial SFA information and can improve understanding of secondary forests and the estimation of forest carbon storage in China.

Project description:Increasing awareness of the issue of deforestation and degradation in the tropics has resulted in efforts to monitor forest resources in tropical countries. Advances in satellite-based remote sensing and ground-based technologies have allowed for monitoring of forests with high spatial, temporal and thematic detail. Despite these advances, there is a need to engage communities in monitoring activities and include these stakeholders in national forest monitoring systems. In this study, we analyzed activity data (deforestation and forest degradation) collected by local forest experts over a 3-year period in an Afro-montane forest area in southwestern Ethiopia and corresponding Landsat Time Series (LTS). Local expert data included forest change attributes, geo-location and photo evidence recorded using mobile phones with integrated GPS and photo capabilities. We also assembled LTS using all available data from all spectral bands and a suite of additional indices and temporal metrics based on time series trajectory analysis. We predicted deforestation, degradation or stable forests using random forest models trained with data from local experts and LTS spectral-temporal metrics as model covariates. Resulting models predicted deforestation and degradation with an out of bag (OOB) error estimate of 29% overall, and 26% and 31% for the deforestation and degradation classes, respectively. By dividing the local expert data into training and operational phases corresponding to local monitoring activities, we found that forest change models improved as more local expert data were used. Finally, we produced maps of deforestation and degradation using the most important spectral bands. The results in this study represent some of the first to combine local expert based forest change data and dense LTS, demonstrating the complementary value of both continuous data streams. Our results underpin the utility of both datasets and provide a useful foundation for integrated forest monitoring systems relying on data streams from diverse sources.

Project description:Sustainable forest management is based on functional relationships between management actions, landscape conditions, and forest values. Changes in management practices make it fundamentally more difficult to study these relationships because the impacts of current practices are difficult to disentangle from the persistent influences of past practices. Within the Atlantic Northern Forest of Maine, U.S.A., forest policy and management practices changed abruptly in the early 1990s. During the 1970s-1980s, a severe insect outbreak stimulated salvage clearcutting of large contiguous tracts of spruce-fir forest. Following clearcut regulation in 1991, management practices shifted abruptly to near complete dependence on partial harvesting. Using a time series of Landsat satellite imagery (1973-2010) we assessed cumulative landscape change caused by these very different management regimes. We modeled predominant temporal patterns of harvesting and segmented a large study area into groups of landscape units with similar harvest histories. Time series of landscape composition and configuration metrics averaged within groups revealed differences in landscape dynamics caused by differences in management history. In some groups (24% of landscape units), salvage caused rapid loss and subdivision of intact mature forest. Persistent landscape change was created by large salvage clearcuts (often averaging > 100 ha) and conversion of spruce-fir to deciduous and mixed forest. In groups that were little affected by salvage (56% of landscape units), contemporary partial harvesting caused loss and subdivision of intact mature forest at even greater rates. Patch shape complexity and edge density reached high levels even where cumulative harvest area was relatively low. Contemporary practices introduced more numerous and much smaller patches of stand-replacing disturbance (typically averaging <15 ha) and a correspondingly large amount of edge. Management regimes impacted different areas to different degrees, producing different trajectories of landscape change that should be recognized when studying the impact of policy and management practices on forest ecology.

Project description:Reversing ecological degradation through restoration activities is a key societal challenge of the upcoming decade. However, lack of evidence on the effectiveness of restoration interventions leads to inconsistent, delayed, or poorly informed statements of success, hindering the wise allocation of resources, representing a missed opportunity to learn from previous experiences. This study contributes to a better understanding of spatial and temporal dynamics of ecosystem services at ecological restoration sites. We developed a method using Landsat satellite images combined with a Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) design, and applied this to an arid rural landscape, the Baviaanskloof in South Africa. Since 1990, various restoration projects have been implemented to halt and reverse degradation. We applied the BACI approach at pixel-level comparing the conditions of each intervened pixel (impact) with 20 similar control pixels. By evaluating the conditions before and after the restoration intervention, we assessed the effectiveness of long-term restoration interventions distinguishing their impact from environmental temporal changes. The BACI approach was implemented with Landsat images that cover a 30-year period at a spatial resolution of 30 meter. We evaluated the impact of three interventions (revegetation, livestock exclusion, and the combination of both) on three ecosystem services; forage provision, erosion prevention, and presence of iconic vegetation. We also evaluated whether terrain characteristics could partially explain the variation in impact of interventions. The resulting maps showed spatial patterns of positive and negative effects of interventions on ecosystem services. Intervention effectiveness differed across vegetation conditions, terrain aspect, and soil parent material. Our method allows for spatially explicit quantification of the long-term restoration impact on ecosystem service supply, and for the detailed visualization of impact across an area. This pixel-level analysis is specifically suited for heterogeneous landscapes, where restoration impact not only varies between but also within restoration sites.

Project description:Dynamic monitoring of surface water bodies is essential for understanding global climate change and the impact of human activities on water resources. Satellite remote sensing is characterized by large-scale monitoring, timely updates, and simplicity, and it has become an important means of obtaining the distribution of surface water bodies. This study is based on a long time-series Landsat satellite images and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, focusing on Anhui Province in China, and proposes a method for extracting surface water that combines water indices, Bias-Corrected Fuzzy Clustering Method (BCFCM), and OTSU threshold segmentation. The spatial distribution of surface water in Anhui Province was obtained from 1984 to 2021, and further analysis was conducted on the spatiotemporal characteristics of surface water in each city and three major river basins within the province. The results indicated that the overall accuracy of water extraction in this study was 94.06 %. Surface water in Anhui was most abundant in 1998 and least in 2001, with more distribution in the south than in the north. Northern Anhui is dominated by rivers, while southern Anhui has more lakes. Permanent surface water with an inundation frequency of above 75 % covered approximately 4341 km2, accounting for 32.03 % of the total water, while seasonal water with an inundation frequency between 5 % and 75 % covered about 6661 km2, accounting for 49.15 % of the total water, others were considered temporary surface water. By comparing our results with the global annual surface water released by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), we found that our study performed better in extracting lakes and rivers in terms of completeness, but the extraction results for aquaculture areas were slightly less than the JRC dataset. Overall, the long-term surface water dataset established in this study can effectively supplement the existing datasets and provide important references for regional water resource investigation, management, as well as flood monitoring.
