Project description:Rational design and synthesis of high-performance electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) is crucial to large-scale commercialization of direct ethanol fuel cells, but it is still an incredible challenge. Herein, a unique Pd metallene/Ti3C2Tx MXene (Pdene/Ti3C2Tx)-supported electrocatalyst is constructed via an in-situ growth approach for high-efficiency EOR. The resulting Pdene/Ti3C2Tx catalyst achieves an ultrahigh mass activity of 7.47 A mgPd-1 under alkaline condition, as well as high tolerance to CO poisoning. In situ attenuated total reflection-infrared spectroscopy studies combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the excellent EOR activity of Pdene/Ti3C2Tx catalyst is attributed to the unique and stable interfaces which reduce the reaction energy barrier of *CH3CO intermediate oxidation and facilitate oxidative removal of CO poisonous species by increasing the Pd-OH binding strength.

Project description:The urgent demand for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) with elevated C1 selectivity, robust anti-poisoning capability, and high mass activity presents a formidable challenge. Herein, a novel two-dimentional (2D) high-entropy PdRhFeCoMo metallene (PdRhFeCoMo HEM) electrocatalyst is successfully synthesized via a mild one-step solvothermal method. The PdRhFeCoMo HEM, characterized by intentionally designed multi-metallic ensembles and ultra-thin graphene-like structures, delivers an impressive mass activity of 7.47 A mgPd+Rh -1 and specific activity of 25.5 mA cm-2. Furthermore, it can retain a mass activity of 0.56 A mgPd+Rh -1 after undergoing 20000 s of continuous testing, demonstrating outstanding resistance to poisoning. More significantly, the PdRhFeCoMo HEM demonstrates an elevated capacity for C─C bond cleavage with a superior C1 selectivity of up to 84.12%. In situ spectroscopy analysis, combined with theoretical calculations, reveals that the deliberate design of components and structures effectively regulate the electronic properties of the Pd site, thereby enhancing the adsorption of reactant and reducing the reaction barrier of the C1 pathway. Finally, a flexible solid-state ethanol fuel cell assembled by PdRhFeCoMo HEM presents a maximum power density of 20.1 mW cm-2 and can operate continuously by repeatedly adding ethanol fuel.

Project description:Nano-ordered intermetallic compounds have generated great interest in fuel cell applications. However, the synthesis of non-preciousearly transition metal intermetallic nanoparticles remains a formidable challenge owing to the extremely oxyphilic nature and very negative reduction potentials. Here, we have successfully synthesized non-precious Co3Ta intermetallic nanoparticles, with uniform size of 5 nm. Atomic structural characterizations and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements confirm the atomically ordered intermetallic structure. As electrocatalysts for the hydrazine oxidation reaction, Co3Ta nanoparticles exhibit an onset potential of -0.086 V (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) and two times higher specific activity relative to commercial Pt/C (+0.06 V), demonstrating the top-level performance among reported electrocatalysts. The Co-Ta bridge sites are identified as the location of the most active sites thanks to density functional theory calculations. The activation energy of the hydrogen dissociation step decreases significantly upon N2H4 adsorption on the Co-Ta bridge active sites, contributing to the significantly enhanced activity.

Project description:Exploring new materials is essential in the field of material science. Especially, searching for optimal materials with utmost atomic utilization, ideal activities and desirable stability for catalytic applications requires smart design of materials' structures. Herein, we report iridium metallene oxide: 1 T phase-iridium dioxide (IrO2) by a synthetic strategy combining mechanochemistry and thermal treatment in a strong alkaline medium. This material demonstrates high activity for oxygen evolution reaction with a low overpotential of 197 millivolt in acidic electrolyte at 10 milliamperes per geometric square centimeter (mA cmgeo-2). Together, it achieves high turnover frequencies of 4.2 sUPD-1 (3.0 sBET-1) at 1.50 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode. Furthermore, 1T-IrO2 also shows little degradation after 126 hours chronopotentiometry measurement under the high current density of 250 mA cmgeo-2 in proton exchange membrane device. Theoretical calculations reveal that the active site of Ir in 1T-IrO2 provides an optimal free energy uphill in *OH formation, leading to the enhanced performance. The discovery of this 1T-metallene oxide material will provide new opportunities for catalysis and other applications.

Project description:The distribution of alloyed atoms in semiconductors often deviates from a random distribution which can have significant effects on the properties of the materials. In this study, scanning transmission electron microscopy techniques are employed to analyze the distribution of Bi in several distinctly MBE grown GaAs1-xBix alloys. Statistical quantification of atomic-resolution HAADF images, as well as numerical simulations, are employed to interpret the contrast from Bi-containing columns at atomically abrupt (001) GaAs-GaAsBi interface and the onset of CuPt-type ordering. Using monochromated EELS mapping, bulk plasmon energy red-shifts are examined in a sample exhibiting phase-separated domains. This suggests a simple method to investigate local GaAsBi unit-cell volume expansions and to complement standard X-ray-based lattice-strain measurements. Also, a single-variant CuPt-ordered GaAsBi sample grown on an offcut substrate is characterized with atomic scale compositional EDX mappings, and the order parameter is estimated. Finally, a GaAsBi alloy with a vertical Bi composition modulation is synthesized using a low substrate rotation rate. Atomically, resolved EDX and HAADF imaging shows that the usual CuPt-type ordering is further modulated along the [001] growth axis with a period of three lattice constants. These distinct GaAsBi samples exemplify the variety of Bi distributions that can be achieved in this alloy, shedding light on the incorporation mechanisms of Bi atoms and ways to further develop Bi-containing III-V semiconductors.

Project description:The sequences of the blaTEM genes encoding TEM-20, TEM-21, TEM-22, and TEM-29 extended-spectrum beta-lactamases were determined. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequences indicated that TEM-20 and TEM-29 were derived from TEM-1 and that TEM-21 and TEM-22 were derived from TEM-2. The substitutions involved were Ser-238 and Thr-182 for TEM-20; His-164 for TEM-29; Lys-104, Arg-153, and Ser-238 for TEM-21; and Lys-104, Gly-237, and Ser-238 for TEM-22. The promoter region of the blaTEM-22 gene was identical to that of blaTEM-3. High-level production of TEM-20 could result from a 135-bp deletion which combined the -35 region of the Pa promoter with the -10 region of the P3 promoter and a G-->T transition in the latter motif.

Project description:In this work, broadband terahertz (THz) wave emissions have been detected from the trigonal layered PtBi2 on the excitation of the femtosecond laser pulses. Such THz generation is found to arise from the dominated linear photogalvanic effect, which is further discovered to strongly depend on the unique electronic structures of PtBi2. Furthermore, an effective nonlinear susceptibility of PtBi2 is also obtained and is nearly two orders of magnitude larger than that of the traditional nonlinear crystal for THz generation.

Project description:We report the formation, growth, and dynamics of model protocell superstructures on solid surfaces, resembling single cell colonies. These structures, consisting of several layers of lipidic compartments enveloped in a dome-shaped outer lipid bilayer, emerged as a result of spontaneous shape transformation of lipid agglomerates deposited on thin film aluminum surfaces. Collective protocell structures were observed to be mechanically more stable compared to isolated spherical compartments. We show that the model colonies encapsulate DNA and accommodate nonenzymatic, strand displacement DNA reactions. The membrane envelope is able to disassemble and expose individual daughter protocells, which can migrate and attach via nanotethers to distant surface locations, while maintaining their encapsulated contents. Some colonies feature "exocompartments", which spontaneously extend out of the enveloping bilayer, internalize DNA, and merge again with the superstructure. A continuum elastohydrodynamic theory that we developed suggests that a plausible driving force behind subcompartment formation is attractive van der Waals (vdW) interactions between the membrane and surface. The balance between membrane bending and vdW interactions yields a critical length scale of 236 nm, above which the membrane invaginations can form subcompartments. The findings support our hypotheses that in extension of the "lipid world hypothesis", protocells may have existed in the form of colonies, potentially benefiting from the increased mechanical stability provided by a superstructure.
