Demonstration and Control of "Spoof-Plasmon" Scattering from 3D Spherical Metaparticles.

ABSTRACT: Geometries that replicate the behavior of metal nanostructures at much lower frequencies via texturing surfaces so they will support a surface wave have been a central pillar of metamaterials research. However, previous work has focused largely on geometries that can be reduced to symmetries in one or two dimensions, such as strips, flat planes, and cylinders. Shapes with isotropic responses in three dimensions are important for applications, such as radar scattering and the replication of certain nanoscale behaviors. This work presents a detailed exploration of the scattering behavior of 3D spherical "spoof plasmonic" metaparticles, based on the platonic solids. Their behavior is compared to an effective medium model through simulation and experiment, and the vast range of behaviors that can be produced from a metal sphere of a given radius via tuning its internal structure is explored in detail.

Scattering of spoof surface plasmon polaritons in defect-rich THz waveguides.

Project description:We report on the first observation of 'Spoof' Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) scattering from surface defects on metal-coated 3D printed, corrugated THz waveguiding surfaces. Surface defects, a result of the printing process, are shown to assist the direct coupling of the incident free-space radiation into a spoof SPP wave; removing the need to bridge the photon momentum gap using knife-edge or prism coupling. The free space characteristics, propagation losses and confinement of the spoof SPPs to the surface are measured, and the results are compared to finite-difference time domain simulations. Angular resolved THz spectroscopy measurements reveal the scattering patterns from surfaces and are compared with Mie theory, taking into account the shortened wavelength of the photons in their bound SPP state compared to their free space wavelength. These results confirm yet another similarity between the properties of THz spoof SPPs and their natural, non-spoof, counterparts at optical and infrared frequencies which also, unexpectedly, adds functionality to the structures.

Demonstration of a terahertz coplanar-strip spoof-surface-plasmon-polariton low-pass filter.

Project description:There is a growing interest in spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) structures at terahertz (THz) frequencies for applications such as filtering, sensing, and communications. However, to date, there are limited experiments that confirm SSPP characteristics at THz frequencies. The majority of literature focuses on simulation or verification by device scaling to Gigahertz (GHz) frequencies where standard vector network analyzers are readily available. This paper presents the first experimental verification of SSPP characteristics at THz frequencies in a guided wave system using coplanar strip (CPS) feedlines. Specifically, we design three SSPP structures with varying band-edge frequencies (1.04 THz, 0.63 THz, and 0.53 THz), then fabricate and verify the low-pass transmission characteristics using a modified THz-time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) system. We find strong agreement between simulation, theory, and experiment.

Properties of spoof plasmon in thin structures.

Project description:Spoof surface plasmon polariton (SSPP) is an exotic electromagnetic state that confines light at a subwavelength scale at a design-specific frequency. It has been known for a while that spoof plasmon mode can exist in planar, thin structures with dispersion properties similar to that of its wide three-dimensional structure counterpart. We, however, have shown that spoof plasmons in thin structures possess some unique properties that remain unexplored. Our analysis reveals that the field interior to SSPP waveguide can achieve an exceptional hyperbolic spatial dependence, which can explain why spoof plasma resonance incurs red-shift with the reduction of the waveguide thickness, whereas common wisdom suggests frequency blue-shift of a resonant structure with its size reduction. In addition, we show that strong confinement can be achieved over a wide band in thin spoof plasmon structure, ranging from the spoof plasma frequency up to a lower frequency considerably away from the resonant point. The nature of lateral confinement in thin SSPP structures may enable interesting applications involving fast modulation rate due to enhanced sensitivity of optical modes without compromising modal confinement.

High-efficiency chirality-modulated spoof surface plasmon meta-coupler.

Project description:Efficiently exciting surface plasmon polaritons (SPP) is highly desired in many photonic applications, but most approaches (such as prism and grating couplers) cannot control flexibly their SPP excitation directions. While Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) metasurfaces were recently proposed to achieve direction-controllable SPP excitations, such scheme suffers from low-efficiency issue due to both direct reflections at the coupler surface and the mode mismatch between the coupler and the guiding-out plasmonic structure. In this article, we solve these issues via imposing two criterions to guide design both the metasurface and the plasmonic metal, based on which a direction-controllable SPP excitation with very high efficiency can be realized. As a proof of concept, we designed/fabricated a realistic device working in the microwave regime, and performed both near-field and far-field measurements to demonstrate that it can achieve an spoof SPP conversion efficiency ~78%, much higher than previous devices. Full-wave simulations are in good agreement with experiments, showing that the efficiency can be further pushed to 92% with optimized designs. Our findings can stimulate spoof SPP-related applications, particularly can help enhance the spin-dependent light-matter interactions in low frequency regime.

Bifunctional spoof surface plasmon polariton meta-coupler using anisotropic transmissive metasurface.

Project description:Tailoring the wavefronts of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SSPPs) at will, especially with multifunctional integration, is of great importance in near-field photonics. However, conventional SSPP devices suffer from the issues of bulk configurations, limited functionalities, and single operating modes, which are unfavorable for electromagnetic (EM) integration. Here, a novel scheme is proposed to design bifunctional SSPP meta-devices based on the polarization dependent property via satisfying the comprehensive phase distributions and multi-mode momentum matching in a transmission geometry. As proof of the concept, we experimentally demonstrate a bifunctional SSPP meta-device in the microwave regime that can convert incident x- and y-polarized waves to transverse magnetic (TM)-mode SSPP Bessel beams and transverse electric (TE)-mode SSPP focusing beams, respectively. Our findings open a door to achieve near-field manipulation of SSPPs with multi-function and multi-mode integration, which can stimulate the applications of SSPP functional devices, such as near-field sensing, imaging, and on-chip photonics.

Stimulated plasmon polariton scattering.

Project description:Plasmon and phonon polaritons of two-dimensional (2D) and van-der-Waals materials have recently gained substantial interest. Unfortunately, they are notoriously hard to observe in linear response because of their strong confinement, low frequency and longitudinal mode symmetry. Here, we propose an approach of harnessing nonlinear resonant scattering that we call stimulated plasmon polariton scattering (SPPS) in analogy to the opto-acoustic stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). We show that SPPS allows to excite, amplify and detect 2D plasmon and phonon polaritons all across the THz-range while requiring only optical components in the near-IR or visible range. We present a coupled-mode theory framework for SPPS and based on this find that SPPS power gains exceed the very top gains observed in on-chip SBS by at least an order of magnitude. This opens exciting possibilities to fundamental studies of 2D materials and will help closing the THz gap in spectroscopy and information technology.

Terahertz Spoof Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides: A Comprehensive Model with Experimental Verification.

Project description:Spoof surface plasmon polariton waveguides are perfect candidates to enable novel, miniaturized terahertz integrated systems, which will expedite the next-generation ultra-wideband communications, high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy applications. In this paper, we introduce, for the first time, a model for the effective dielectric constant, which is the most fundamental design parameter, of the terahertz spoof surface plasmon polariton waveguides. To verify the proposed model, we design, fabricate and measure several waveguides with different physical parameters for 0.25 to 0.3 THz band. The measurement results show very good agreement with the simulations, having an average and a maximum error of 2.6% and 8.8%, respectively, achieving 10-to-30 times better accuracy than the previous approaches presented in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first-time investigation of the effective dielectric constant of the terahertz spoof surface plasmon polariton waveguides, enabling accurate design of any passive component for the terahertz band.

Reconfigurable Mach-Zehnder interferometer for dynamic modulations of spoof surface plasmon polaritons.

Project description:We propose an ultrathin reconfigurable Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) for realizing dynamic frequency and amplitude modulations of spoof surface plasmon (SSP) signal. Active varactor diodes are integrated in the SSP unit cells on one of the MZI arms to introduce asymmetry to the MZI structure, which can control the interference patterns by varying bias voltages applied on the varactor diodes. We show that the spectral positions of multiple sharp interference dips are very sensitive to the change of diode capacitance, thereby allowing for good frequency modulation. We also demonstrate continuous amplitude modulation by tuning the varactor diodes at multiple selected frequencies. To verify the reconfigurable feature of the proposed SSP MZI, the frequency shift keying (FSK) and amplitude modulations have been experimentally demonstrated on the same structure. The modulation depth of the amplitude modulation can be further improved by designing geometrical parameters of the SSP structure, reaching a significant amplitude change from 0.88 to 0.05 in experiments.

Strongly Confined Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons Waveguiding Enabled by Planar Staggered Plasmonic Waveguides.

Project description:We demonstrate a novel route to achieving highly efficient and strongly confined spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) waveguides at subwavelength scale enabled by planar staggered plasmonic waveguides (PSPWs). The structure of these new waveguides consists of an ultrathin metallic strip with periodic subwavelength staggered double groove arrays supported by a flexible dielectric substrate, leading to unique staggered EM coupling and waveguiding phenomenon. The spoof SPP propagation properties, including dispersion relations and near field distributions, are numerically investigated. Furthermore, broadband coplanar waveguide (CPW) to planar staggered plasmonic waveguide (PSPW) transitions are designed to achieve smooth momentum matching and highly efficient spoof SPP mode conversion. By applying these transitions, a CPW-PSPW-CPW structure is designed, fabricated and measured to verify the PSPW's propagation performance at microwave frequencies. The investigation results show the proposed PSPWs have excellent performance of deep subwavelength spoof SPPs confinement, long propagation length and low bend loss, as well as great design flexibility to engineer the propagation properties by adjusting their geometry dimensions and material parameters. Our work opens up a new avenue for development of various advanced planar integrated plasmonic devices and circuits in microwave and terahertz regimes.

Capacitive-coupled Series Spoof Surface Plasmon Polaritons.

Project description:A novel method to realize stopband within the operating frequency of spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is presented. The stopband is introduced by a new kind of capacitive-coupled series spoof SPPs. Two conventional H-shaped unit cells are proposed to construct a new unit cell, and every two new unit cells are separated by a gap with certain distance, which is designed to implement capacitive coupling. The original surface impedance matching is disturbed by the capacitive coupling, leading to the stopband during the transmission of SPPs. The proposed method is verified by both numerical simulations and experiments, and the simulated and measured results have good agreements. It is shown that the proposed structure exhibits a stopband in 9-9.5 GHz while the band-pass feature maintains in 5-9 GHz and 9.5-11 GHz. In the passband, the reflection coefficient is less than -10 dB, and the transmission loss is around 3 dB; in the stopband, the reflection coefficient is -2 dB, and the transmission coefficient is less than -30 dB. The compact size, easy fabrication and good band-pass and band-stop features make the proposed structure a promising plasmonic device in SPP communication systems.
