Cooling of a granular gas mixture in microgravity.

ABSTRACT: Granular gases are fascinating non-equilibrium systems with interesting features such as spontaneous clustering and non-Gaussian velocity distributions. Mixtures of different components represent a much more natural composition than monodisperse ensembles but attracted comparably little attention so far. We present the observation and characterization of a mixture of rod-like particles with different sizes and masses in a drop tower experiment. Kinetic energy decay rates during granular cooling and collision rates were determined and Haff's law for homogeneous granular cooling was confirmed. Thereby, energy equipartition between the mixture components and between individual degrees of freedom is violated. Heavier particles keep a slightly higher average kinetic energy than lighter ones. Experimental results are supported by numerical simulations.

Granular cooling of ellipsoidal particles in microgravity.

Project description:A three-dimensional granular gas of ellipsoids is established by exposing the system to the microgravity environment of the International Space Station. We use two methods to measure the dynamics of the constituent particles and report the long-time development of the granular temperature until no further particle movement is detectable. The resulting cooling behavior can be well described by Haff's cooling law with time scale τ. Different analysis methods show evidence of particle clustering towards the end of the experiment. By using the kinetic theory for ellipsoids we compare the translational energy dissipation of individual collision events with the overall cooling time scale τ. The difference from this comparison indicates how energy is distributed in different degrees of freedom including both translation and rotation during the cooling.

Increasing temperature of cooling granular gases.

Project description:The kinetic energy of a force-free granular gas decays monotonously due to inelastic collisions of the particles. For a homogeneous granular gas of identical particles, the corresponding decay of granular temperature is quantified by Haff's law. Here, we report that for a granular gas of aggregating particles, the granular temperature does not necessarily decay but may even increase. Surprisingly, the increase of temperature is accompanied by the continuous loss of total gas energy. This stunning effect arises from a subtle interplay between decaying kinetic energy and gradual reduction of the number of degrees of freedom associated with the particles' dynamics. We derive a set of kinetic equations of Smoluchowski type for the concentrations of aggregates of different sizes and their energies. We find scaling solutions to these equations and a condition for the aggregation mechanism predicting growth of temperature. Numerical direct simulation Monte Carlo results confirm the theoretical predictions.

Granular piston-probing in microgravity: powder compression, from densification to jamming.

Project description:The macroscopic response of granular solids is determined by the microscopic fabric of force chains, which, in turn, is intimately linked to the history of the solid. To query the influence of gravity on powder flow behavior, a granular material is subjected to compression by a piston in a closed container, on-ground and in microgravity (on parabolic flights). Results show that piston-probing densifies the packing, eventually leading to jamming of the material compressed by the piston, regardless of the gravitational environment. The onset of jamming is found to appear at lower packing fraction in microgravity ([Formula: see text]) than on-ground ([Formula: see text]). We interpret these findings as the manifestation of a granular fabric altered by the gravitational force field: in absence of a secondary load (due to gravitational acceleration) to stimulate reorganization in a different direction to the major compression stress, the particles' configuration becomes stable at lower density, as the particles have no external drive to promote reorganization into a denser packing. This is coupled with a change in interparticular force balance which takes place under low gravity, as cohesive interactions become predominant. We propose a combination of microscopic and continuum arguments to rationalize our results.

A comparison of gas stream cooling and plunge cooling of macromolecular crystals.

Project description:Cryocooling for macromolecular crystallography is usually performed via plunging the crystal into a liquid cryogen or placing the crystal in a cold gas stream. These two approaches are compared here for the case of nitro-gen cooling. The results show that gas stream cooling, which typically cools the crystal more slowly, yields lower mosaicity and, in some cases, a stronger anomalous signal relative to rapid plunge cooling. During plunging, moving the crystal slowly through the cold gas layer above the liquid surface can produce mosaicity similar to gas stream cooling. Annealing plunge cooled crystals by warming and recooling in the gas stream allows the mosaicity and anomalous signal to recover. For tetragonal thermolysin, the observed effects are less pronounced when the cryosolvent has smaller thermal contraction, under which conditions the protein structures from plunge cooled and gas stream cooled crystals are very similar. Finally, this work also demonstrates that the resolution dependence of the reflecting range is correlated with the cooling method, suggesting it may be a useful tool for discerning whether crystals are cooled too rapidly. The results support previous studies suggesting that slower cooling methods are less deleterious to crystal order, as long as ice formation is prevented and dehydration is limited.

Dynamically structured bubbling in vibrated gas-fluidized granular materials.

Project description:The dynamics of granular materials are critical to many natural and industrial processes; granular motion is often strikingly similar to flow in conventional liquids. Food, pharmaceutical, and clean energy processes utilize bubbling fluidized beds, systems in which gas is flowed upward through granular particles, suspending the particles in a liquid-like state through which gas voids or bubbles rise. Here, we demonstrate that vibrating these systems at a resonant frequency can transform the normally chaotic motion of these bubbles into a dynamically structured configuration, creating reproducible, controlled motion of particles and gas. The resonant frequency is independent of particle properties and system size, and a simple harmonic oscillator model captures this frequency. Discrete particle simulations show that bubble structuring forms because of rapid, local transitions between solid-like and fluid-like behavior in the grains induced by vibration. Existing continuum models for gas-solid flows struggle to capture these fluid-solid transitions and thus cannot predict the bubble structuring. We propose a constitutive relationship for solids stress that predicts fluid-solid transitions and hence captures the experimental structured bubbling patterns. Similar structuring has been observed by oscillating gas flow in bubbling fluidized beds. We show that vibrating bubbling fluidized beds can produce a more ordered structure, particularly as system size is increased. The scalable structure and continuum model proposed here provide the potential to address major issues with scale-up and optimal operation, which currently limit the use of bubbling fluidized beds in existing and emerging technologies.

Magnetic excitation of a granular gas as a bulk thermostat.

Project description:A thermostat utilizing a varying magnetic field has been developed to agitate soft ferromagnetic particles in microgravity platforms for an investigation of an energy-dissipative granular gas. Although the method has experimentally realized a reasonably homogeneous spatial distribution of particles, the physics behind the magnetically excited particles has not been understood. Therefore, a numerical calculation based on the discrete element method is developed in this paper to explain the realization of homogeneously distributed particles. The calculation method allows considering inelastic and magnetic interactions between particles and tracking the motions due to those interactions during the excitation of the granular gas. The calculation results, compared with the experimental result, show that magnetic interactions between particles, a time-domain variation of magnetic-excitation directions, and random collisions of particles between each magnetic excitation contribute to distribute particles homogeneously.

Orbital Gas after 25-Gauge Pars Plana Vitrectomy with Incorrect Gas Mixture.

Project description:We present 2 cases of sutureless 25-gauge pars plana vitrectomy and fluid-gas exchange, in which incorrect gas concentrations likely led to elevated intraocular pressures and retrobulbar gas. Combined removal of orbital gas with anterior orbitotomy and pars plana vitrectomy was performed in the first case to address expanding intraocular and retrobulbar gas resulting from a suspected error in gas dilution. Vitreous and orbital gas removal by needling was effective in the second case. In patients with elevated intraocular pressure and orbital gas accumulation after vitrectomy, combined intraocular and orbital decompressions were effective in optimizing clinical outcomes. There is no consensus regarding the best management of orbital gas after vitrectomy. We propose that a multidisciplinary technique should be considered, when available.

Characterization of laser cooling in microgravity via long-term operations in TianGong-2 space lab.

Project description:The invention of laser cooling has fundamentally influenced the research frontier of atomic physics and quantum physics, and recently an intense focus has been on the studies of cold atom physics in microgravity environments. Herein, we report the results of our laser cooling experiment in TianGong-2 space lab, which operated for 34 consecutive months in orbit. Over such an extended operation time, the quality of laser cooling did not experience any significant decline, while the properties of laser cooling in orbital microgravity were systematically studied. In particular, we demonstrate magneto-optical trapping and polarization-gradient cooling in orbit and carefully examine their performances. A comparison of the in-orbit and on-ground results indicates that a higher cooling efficiency exists in microgravity, including a smaller loss rate during the trapping and cooling process and lower ultimate temperature of laser-cooled atoms. Our progress has laid the technical foundations for future applications of cold atoms in space missions with operation times of the order of years.

Continuous flow production of concentrated hyperpolarized xenon gas from a dilute xenon gas mixture by buffer gas condensation.

Project description:We present a new method for the continuous flow production of concentrated hyperpolarized xenon-129 (HP 129Xe) gas from a dilute xenon (Xe) gas mixture with high nuclear spin polarization. A low vapor pressure (i.e., high boiling-point) gas was introduced as an alternative to molecular nitrogen (N2), which is the conventional quenching gas for generating HP 129Xe via Rb-Xe spin-exchange optical-pumping (SEOP). In contrast to the generally used method of extraction by freezing Xe after the SEOP process, the quenching gas separated as a liquid at moderately low temperature so that Xe was maintained in its gaseous state, allowing the continuous delivery of highly polarized concentrated Xe gas. We selected isobutene as the candidate quenching gas and our method was demonstrated experimentally while comparing its performance with N2. Isobutene could be liquefied and removed from the Xe gas mixture using a cold trap, and the concentrated HP 129Xe gas exhibited a significantly enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal. Although the system requires further optimization depending on the intended purpose, our approach presented here could provide a simple means for performing NMR or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements continuously using HP 129Xe with improved sensitivity.

Swing-like pool boiling on nano-textured surfaces for microgravity applications related to cooling of high-power microelectronics.

Project description:Here, we demonstrate that heat removed in pool boiling from a heater mimicking high-power microelectronics could be used to facilitate a swing-like motion of the heater before being finally dissipated. This swing-like motion could be beneficial for shedding a large vapor bubble that encapsulates high-power heaters in microgravity where buoyancy force is unavailable for vapor bubble removal. The swing-like motion is propelled by vapor bubble recoil, the force which exists irrespective of gravity and buoyancy. We also demonstrate that this force could be significantly enhanced by depositing on the heater surface supersonically blown polymer nanofibers with cross-sectional diameters below 100 nm. These nanofibers provide additional nucleation sites, resulting in much more frequent bubble nucleation and departure, and thus a higher overall vapor recoil force propelling the heater motion. Such nanofibers strongly adhere to the heater surface and withstand prolonged harsh pool boiling. The measured velocity of the model swing-like heater in Novec 7300 fluid is about 1 cm/s.
