Conditional reciprocal stressor-strain effects in university students: a cross-lagged panel study in Germany.

ABSTRACT: University students worldwide are facing increasing mental health challenges. Traditional stress models, like the Job/Study Demand-Resources Model, link stressors directly to strain. Yet, recent studies suggest the influence of strain on stressors may be even stronger. Our research explored these reciprocal dynamics among university students, considering social support and mindfulness as potential moderators. We conducted a two-wave panel study with 264 university students. We ran separate cross-lagged panel structural equation analyses for three key health outcomes-emotional exhaustion, depression, and well-being-each paired with perceived study stressors, specifically workload and work complexity. Findings revealed significant stressor and strain effects, with social support notably moderating the impact of emotional exhaustion on workload. These insights challenge traditional stress theories and underscore the importance of mental health support and effective stress management strategies for students, emphasizing the need for proactive mental health initiatives in academic environments.

Project description:ObjectiveTo explore the causal relationship between social support, physical activity behavior, and family relationships among university students.MethodsUsing the Social Support Rating Scale, the Physical Activity Behavior Self-Assessment Scale, and the Family Relationships Scale, a longitudinal follow-up survey was conducted on 412 college students in Sichuan Province at 2-month intervals in March 2024 (T1) and May 2024 (T2), to analyze the interaction mechanisms between college students' social support, physical activity behaviors, and family relationships through cross-lagging.Results(1) There are significant gender differences in social support, physical activity behavior, and family relationships among college students. Among the cross-lagged paths found, except for the path from T1 social support to T2 family relationships (β: 0.40 > 0.21), all other cross-lagged paths are smaller for female college students compared to male college students; (2) T1 social support was able to positively predict T2 physical activity behaviors (β = 0.50, p < 0.001), and T1 physical activity behavior can also positively predict T2 social support (β = 0.18, p < 0.01), but the path value T1 social support → T2 physical activity behavior is larger than T1 physical activity behavior → T2 social support. Therefore, social support is a causal variable for physical activity behavior; (3) T1 social support positively predicts T2 family relationships (β = 0.26, p < 0.001); (4) T1 family relationships positively predict T2 physical activity behavior (β = 0.30, p < 0.001). (5) Physical activity behavior is a mediating variable between family relationships and social support, with a mediating effect size of 0.054.ConclusionThere are gender differences in social support, physical activity behavior, and family relationships among college students; there is a longitudinal causal relationship between social support, physical activity behavior, and family relationships; social support is a causal variable of physical activity behavior, and social support is also a causal variable of family relationships, and family relationships are the Social support is a causal variable for physical activity behavior, social support is also a causal variable for family relations, and family relations are a causal variable for physical activity behavior, which has a partially mediating role in family relations and social support.

Project description:BackgroundWhile the association between depressive symptoms and deliberate self-harm in adolescence is extensively documented, the nature, bi-directionality, and longitudinal dynamics of this relationship remain underexplored. This study aims to investigate the causal and reciprocal relationship between depressive symptoms and deliberate self-harm among rural adolescents in western China.MethodsA 2-year panel study was conducted among 1,840 adolescents aged 10-18 attending rural junior and senior high schools in Sichuan Province, China. The Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale (CES-D) and a global measure of self-reported deliberate self-harm were utilized to examine the relationship between depressive symptoms and deliberate self-harm using both classic and random intercept cross-lagged panel models. Multi-group comparisons were carried out for the gender, pubertal stage, and academic performance subgroups.ResultsPositive and statistically significant correlations were found between depressive symptoms and deliberate self-harm both within and across the three waves of the panel survey, after adjusting for covariates, among rural adolescents in western China (Range: 0.05-0.28, p < 0.05). As anticipated, depressive symptoms positively predicted later deliberate self-harm, which in turn reciprocally predicted subsequent depressive symptoms, both between and within individuals. While the cross-lagged effects were invariant by gender and academic performance, the effect of baseline depressive symptoms on later deliberate self-harm was stronger for adolescents in the early pubertal stage (β = 0.19, 95% Confidence Interval: 0.08 to 0.30) than for those in the middle-to-late pubertal stage (β = 0.13, 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.19).ConclusionThere is a causal and reciprocal relationship between depressive symptoms and deliberate self-harm among rural adolescents in China. Not only does this finding lend further credence to a growing body of research on adolescents' self-harming behaviors but also informs early intervention strategies aimed at improving behavioral health of rural adolescents in western China.

Project description:To explore the interaction mechanism between interpersonal trust, family capital, and physical activity behavior among college students using a cross-lagged study design, providing a theoretical basis for the healthy development of their physical and mental well-being. A longitudinal follow-up survey was conducted among 412 college students in Sichuan Province, using the Interpersonal Trust Scale, Physical Activity Rating Scale, and Family Capital Scale, in two phases over eight weeks from early March (T1) to early May (T2) 2024. (1) The autoregressive path coefficients for interpersonal trust, family capital, and physical activity behavior were 0.51, 0.41, and 0.66, respectively, indicating good stability (p < 0.001). (2) Interpersonal trust at T1 positively predicted family capital at T2 (β = 0.28, p < 0.001), and family capital at T1 also positively predicted interpersonal trust at T2 (β = 0.23, p < 0.001), indicating a mutual influence between family capital and interpersonal trust. (3) Family capital at T1 did not predict physical activity behavior at T2 (p > 0.05), but physical activity behavior at T1 positively predicted family capital at T2 (β = 0.20, p < 0.001), indicating that physical activity behavior is a causal variable for family capital. (4) Interpersonal trust at T1 positively predicted physical activity behavior at T2 (β = 0.16, p < 0.001), while physical activity behavior at T1 did not predict interpersonal trust at T2 (p > 0.05), suggesting that interpersonal trust is a causal variable for physical activity behavior. (5) Family capital mediated the relationship between interpersonal trust and physical activity behavior (α = 0.046), with a confidence interval of [0.014,0.097]. There were no gender differences in the relationship between interpersonal trust, family capital, and physical activity behavior among college students. There was a longitudinal relationship between interpersonal trust, family capital, and physical activity behavior, where family capital and interpersonal trust mutually influence each other. Physical activity behavior was a positive causal variable for family capital, while interpersonal trust was a positive causal variable for physical activity behavior. Additionally, family capital mediated the relationship between interpersonal trust and physical activity behavior.
