Landslide topology uncovers failure movements.

ABSTRACT: The death toll and monetary damages from landslides continue to rise despite advancements in predictive modeling. These models' performances are limited as landslide databases used in developing them often miss crucial information, e.g., underlying movement types. This study introduces a method of discerning landslide movements, such as slides, flows, and falls, by analyzing landslides' 3D shapes. By examining landslide topological properties, we discover distinct patterns in their morphology, indicating different movements including complex ones with multiple coupled movements. We achieve 80-94% accuracy by applying topological properties in identifying landslide movements across diverse geographical and climatic regions, including Italy, the US Pacific Northwest, Denmark, Turkey, and Wenchuan in China. Furthermore, we demonstrate a real-world application on undocumented datasets from Wenchuan. Our work introduces a paradigm for studying landslide shapes to understand their underlying movements through the lens of landslide topology, which could aid landslide predictive models and risk evaluations.

Project description:Under strong earthquakes and extreme rainfall conditions, landslide clusters near rivers may block incoming water flows, forming cascade landslide dams. When subjected to extreme hydrological conditions, these cascade landslide dams can experience overtopping, which erodes and entrains material from the dam surface, compromising dam stability, which can potentially lead to outburst flooding. Although existing research provides valuable insights into landslide dam failures, it falls short in addressing the complexities of cascading failures in dam groups. The influence of various factors on this intricate process is still only partially understood, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of dam surface evolution and flood flow dynamics specifically within the context of cascading failures in landslide dams. In this study, we conduct physical model experiments to categorize the stages of cascade landslide dam failure, identify typical failure modes, and investigate the mechanisms affecting breach morphology evolution and flood flow development during cascading failures. Our findings reveal that cascade landslide dams can amplify floods during cascading breaches, with peak flow rates increasing progressively from upstream to downstream. In cascade systems, downstream dams experience accelerated breach processes, where layer erosion becomes predominant. Significant fluctuations in river water levels between cascades can lead to slope failures in both upstream and downstream dams. Specifically, downstream dams exhibit more rapid breach widening, fewer instances of collapse at the breach slope compared to upstream dams, and earlier peak flow timing, making cascade landslide dam breaches more challenging for emergency response. These observations highlight the notable differences between cascade landslide dam failures and single dam failures. Based on these findings, we provide insights into developing mathematical models for cascade landslide dam failures to improve physical-based flood predictions, which will assist the development of early warning strategies for cascade landslide dam breach floods.

Project description:The eukaryotic genome must be precisely organized for its proper function, as genome topology impacts transcriptional regulation, cell division, replication, and repair, among other essential processes. Disruptions to human genome topology can lead to diseases, including cancer. The advent of chromosome conformation capture with high-throughput sequencing (Hi-C) to assess genome organization has revolutionized the study of nuclear genome topology; Hi-C has elucidated numerous genomic structures, including chromosomal territories, active/silent chromatin compartments, Topologically Associated Domains, and chromatin loops. While low-resolution heatmaps can provide important insights into chromosomal level contacts, high-resolution Hi-C datasets are required to reveal folding principles of individual genes. Of particular interest are high-resolution chromosome conformation datasets of organisms modeling the human genome. Here, we report the genome topology of the fungal model organism Neurospora crassa at a high resolution. Our composite Hi-C dataset, which merges 2 independent datasets generated with restriction enzymes that monitor euchromatin (DpnII) and heterochromatin (MseI), along with our DpnII/MseI double digest dataset, provide exquisite detail for both the conformation of entire chromosomes and the folding of chromatin at the resolution of individual genes. Within constitutive heterochromatin, we observe strong yet stochastic internal contacts, while euchromatin enriched with either activating or repressive histone post-translational modifications associates with constitutive heterochromatic regions, suggesting intercompartment contacts form to regulate transcription. Consistent with this, a strain with compromised heterochromatin experiences numerous changes in gene expression. Our high-resolution Neurospora Hi-C datasets are outstanding resources to the fungal community and provide valuable insights into higher organism genome topology.
