Ligand-promoted cobalt-catalyzed radical hydroamination of alkenes.

Project description:Highly regio- and enantioselective intermolecular hydroamination of alkenes is a challenging process potentially leading to valuable chiral amines. Hydroamination of alkenes via metal-catalyzed hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) with good regioselectivity and functional group tolerance has been reported, however, high enantioselectivity has not been achieved due to the lack of suitable ligands. Here we report a ligand-promoted cobalt-catalyzed Markovnikov-type selective radical hydroamination of alkenes with diazo compounds. This operationally simple protocol uses unsymmetric NNN-tridentate (UNT) ligand, readily available alkenes and hydrosilanes to construct hydrazones with good functional group tolerance. The hydrazones can undergo nitrogen-nitrogen bond cleavage smoothly to deliver valuable amine derivatives. Additionally, asymmetric intermolecular hydroamination of unactivated aliphatic terminal alkenes using chiral N-imidazolinylphenyl 8-aminoquinoline (IPAQ) ligands has also been achieved to afford chiral amine derivatives with good enantioselectivities.

Cobalt-catalyzed aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides promoted by visible light.

Project description:The catalytic aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides is widely applied in the synthesis of amides but relies heavily on the use of precious metal catalysis. Herein, we report an aminocarbonylation of (hetero)aryl halides using a simple cobalt catalyst under visible light irradiation. The reaction extends to the use of (hetero)aryl chlorides and is successful with a broad range of amine nucleophiles. Mechanistic investigations are consistent with a reaction proceeding via intermolecular charge transfer involving a donor-acceptor complex of the substrate and cobaltate catalyst.

Cobalt-catalyzed chemoselective dehydrogenation through radical translocation under visible light.

Project description:The transformations that allow the direct removal of hydrogen from their corresponding saturated counterparts by the dehydrogenative strategy are a dream reaction that has remained largely underexplored. In this report, a straightforward and robust cobaloxime-catalyzed photochemical dehydrogenation strategy via intramolecular HAT is described for the first time. The reaction proceeds through an intramolecular radical translocation followed by the cobalt assisted dehydrogenation without needing any other external photosensitizers, noble-metals or oxidants. With this approach, a series of valuable unsaturated compounds such as α,β-unsaturated amides, enamides and allylic and homoallylic sulfonamides were obtained in moderate to excellent yields with good chemo- and regioselectivities, and the synthetic versatility was demonstrated by a range of transformations. And mechanistic studies of the method are discussed.

Photoredox-catalyzed deoxygenative radical transformation of alcohols to sulfinamides.

Project description:Sulfinamides play a crucial role in organic synthesis and pharmaceuticals. In this study, we introduce a highly effective method for the deoxygenative radical addition to N-tritylsulfinylamine, which produces sulfinamides via photoredox catalysis. This method is compatible with a diverse array of functional groups and the resulting sulfonamides were achieved in moderate to high yields. Furthermore, the synthetic applications to access various sulfur(vi)-centered functional groups highlight the practicality of this approach.

A Visible-Light Promoted Amine Oxidation Catalyzed by a Cp*Ir Complex.

Project description:Through a rapid screening of Cp*Ir complexes based on a turn-on type fluorescence readout, a [Cp*Ir(dipyrido[3,2-a : 2',3'-c]phenazine)Cl]+ complex was found to catalyze the blue-light promoted dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles under physiological conditions. In the dehydrogenation of tetrahydroisoquinolines, the catalyst preferentially yielded the monodehydrogenated product, accompanying H2O2 generation. We surmise that this mechanism may be reminiscent of flavin-dependent oxidases.

Visible-light-promoted and chlorophyll-catalyzed aerobic desulfurization of thioamides to amides.

Project description:A novel method for the metal-free synthesis of amides from thioamides based on visible-light photoredox catalysis and in an air atmosphere is reported. Natural pigment chlorophyll is used as a photosensitizer to generate singlet molecular oxygen 1O2, which is involved in the aerobic desulfurization of thioamides. The protocol provides amides in good yields at room temperature under mild conditions. On the basis of experimental results, a plausible photoredox mechanism is proposed.

Visible Light Promoted, Catalyst-Free Radical Carbohydroxylation and Carboetherification under Mild Biomimetic Conditions.

Project description:Metal and catalyst-free carbohydroxylations and carboetherifications at room temperature have been achieved by a combination of beneficial factors including high aryl diazonium concentration and visible light irradiation. The acceleration of the reaction by visible light irradiation is particularly remarkable against the background that neither the aryldiazonium salt nor the alkene show absorptions in the respective range of wavelength. These observations point to weak charge transfer interactions between diazonium salt and alkene, which are nevertheless able to considerably influence the reaction course. As highly promising perspective, many more aryldiazonium-based radical arylations might benefit from simple light irradiation without requiring a photocatalyst or particular additive.

Coexisting Goethite Promotes Fe(II)-Catalyzed Transformation of Ferrihydrite to Goethite.

Project description:In redox-affected soil environments, electron transfer between aqueous Fe(II) and solid-phase Fe(III) catalyzes mineral transformation and recrystallization processes. While these processes have been studied extensively as independent systems, the coexistence of iron minerals is common in nature. Yet it remains unclear how coexisting goethite influences ferrihydrite transformation. Here, we reacted ferrihydrite and goethite mixtures with Fe(II) for 24 h. Our results demonstrate that with more goethite initially present in the mixture more ferrihydrite turned into goethite. We further used stable Fe isotopes to label different Fe pools and probed ferrihydrite transformation in the presence of goethite using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and changes in the isotopic composition of solid and aqueous phases. When ferrihydrite alone underwent Fe(II)-catalyzed transformation, Fe atoms initially in the aqueous phase mostly formed lepidocrocite, while those from ferrihydrite mostly formed goethite. When goethite was initially present, more goethite was formed from atoms initially in the aqueous phase, and nanogoethite formed from atoms initially in ferrihydrite. Our results suggest that coexisting goethite promotes formation of more goethite via Fe(II)-goethite electron transfer and template-directed nucleation and growth. We further hypothesize that electron transfer onto goethite followed by electron hopping onto ferrihydrite is another possible pathway to goethite formation. Our findings demonstrate that mineral transformation is strongly influenced by the composition of soil solid phases.

Visible-Light-Promoted Iridium(III)-Catalyzed Acceptorless Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles at Room Temperature.

Project description:An effective visible-light-promoted iridium(III)-catalyzed hydrogen production from N-heterocycles is described. A single iridium complex constitutes the photocatalytic system playing a dual task, harvesting visible-light and facilitating C-H cleavage and H2 formation at room temperature and without additives. The presence of a chelating C-N ligand combining a mesoionic carbene ligand along with an amido functionality in the IrIII complex is essential to attain the photocatalytic transformation. Furthermore, the IrIII complex is also an efficient catalyst for the thermal reverse process under mild conditions, positioning itself as a proficient candidate for liquid organic hydrogen carrier technologies (LOHCs). Mechanistic studies support a light-induced formation of H2 from the Ir-H intermediate as the operating mode of the iridium complex.

Visible light-promoted metal-free C-H activation: diarylketone-catalyzed selective benzylic mono- and difluorination.

Project description:We report herein an operationally simple method for the direct conversion of benzylic C-H groups to C-F. We show that visible light can activate diarylketones to abstract a benzylic hydrogen atom selectively. Adding a fluorine radical donor yields the benzylic fluoride and regenerates the catalyst. The selective formation of mono- and difluorination products can be achieved by catalyst control. 9-Fluorenone catalyzes benzylic C-H monofluorination, while xanthone catalyzes benzylic C-H difluorination. The scope and efficiency of this new C-H fluorination method are significantly better than those of the existing methods. This is also the first report of selective C-H gem-difluorination.
