Perception of Animal Abuse among Adolescents: Influence of Social and Demographic Factors.

ABSTRACT: Animal welfare is inherited in each society, shaped by the surrounding environment and upbringing of each individual. This influence becomes particularly significant during adolescence. Due to its cultural context, Spain is among the European Union nations with the highest number of cases of animal abuse. The Canary Islands, the scenario of this study, show the highest rates of intentional poisoning of wildlife and pets' abandonment. The aim of the present study was to explore the perception of animal welfare among adolescents, studying the influence of the main socio-demographic factors that may condition it. A validated questionnaire on animal abuse was used and distributed to adolescents aged 14-18 years in two public study centers. Animal abuse rates were correlated with socio-demographic variables. In total, 302 subjects answered the questionnaire. The perception of animal welfare was influenced by socio-demographic variables, gender being the most important. The demographic profile of the least responsive adolescent to animal abuse was a male engaged in sports, not owning a dog, and hailing from a family involved in hunting. Awareness should be raised at an early age, promoting artistic activities, encouraging contact with animals and sporting practices that do not generate a lack of empathy for animals.

Project description:BackgroundThe perception of dentofacial esthetics differs considerably between patients and dentists. Patient's expectations regarding his/her esthetics are important and should be assessed ahead of any planning of esthetic treatment. The aim of this study was to explore the differences in perception of orofacial appearance by laypersons with different social and demographic status.Materials and methodsSelf-administered questionnaires were distributed to 400 subjects. The questionnaire comprised three parts; the first part addressed the demographic variables. The second part queried about dental prosthesis, orthognathic or plastic surgery, and/or ongoing or previous orthodontic treatment. The third part included the Arabic version of the-8-item Orofacial Esthetic Scale (OES-Ar) whose responses were scored in the 5-point Likert scale. These scores were compared by different grouping factors (age, gender, marital status, and education) using non-parametric Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Willis tests with 95% confidence interval (α > 0.05).ResultsA total of 268 questionnaires were eligible for analysis, representing 67% response rate. The satisfaction with facial profile appearance was the highest (4.0±1.1) followed by facial appearance (3.9±1.1), while the color of teeth was the least satisfying item (3.1±1.3). No significant differences were found between age groups for the mean summary score as well as for each item independently. No significant difference was found between both sexes except for the last item "overall impression". Married subjects rated one item (alignment of teeth) better than their counterparts. Positive perception of orofacial appearance increased significantly with the increase of education level, the perception of the oral health status, and the perception of the general health status.ConclusionGood oral health and/or high education level are significant determinants of more positive perception of orofacial esthetic appearance. Patients with these characteristics might be more concerned about their orofacial appearance, and this should be taken into consideration before planning any esthetic restorative dental treatment.

Project description:Anelloviruses represent the major and most diverse component of the healthy human virome, referred to as the anellome. In this study, we determined the anellome of 50 blood donors, forming two sex- and age-matched groups. Anelloviruses were detected in 86% of the donors. The number of detected anelloviruses increased with age and was approximately twice as high in men as in women. A total of 349 complete or nearly complete genomes were classified as belonging to torque teno virus (TTV), torque teno mini virus (TTMV), and torque teno midi virus (TTMDV) anellovirus genera (197, 88, and 64 sequences, respectively). Most donors had intergenus (69.8%) or intragenus (72.1%) coinfections. Despite the limited number of sequences, intradonor recombination analysis showed 6 intragenus recombination events in ORF1. As thousands of anellovirus sequences have been described recently, we finally analyzed the global diversity of human anelloviruses. Species richness and diversity were close to saturation in each anellovirus genus. Recombination was found to be the main factor promoting diversity, although its effect was significantly lower in TTV than in TTMV and TTMDV. Overall, our results suggest that differences in diversity between genera may be caused by variations in the relative contribution of recombination. IMPORTANCE Anelloviruses are the most common human infectious viruses and are considered essentially harmless. Compared to other human viruses, they are characterized by enormous diversity, and recombination is suggested to play an important role in their diversification and evolution. Here, by analyzing the composition of the plasma anellome of 50 blood donors, we find that recombination is also a determinant of viral evolution at the intradonor level. On a larger scale, analysis of anellovirus sequences currently available in databases shows that their diversity is close to saturation and differs among the three human anellovirus genera and that recombination is the main factor explaining this intergenus variability. Global characterization of anellovirus diversity could provide clues about possible associations between certain virus variants and pathologies, as well as facilitate the implementation of unbiased PCR-based detection protocols, which may be relevant for using anelloviruses as endogenous markers of immune status.
