From Microscale Interactions to Macroscale Patterns in Copepod-Crinoid Symbiosis.

ABSTRACT: Crinoids (Echinodermata) exhibit unique morphological and behavioral characteristics that facilitate a wide range of symbiotic relationships with diverse organisms. Our comprehension of their interactions with microscopic copepod crustaceans is, however, still in a nascent and fragmented state. Here, we review and discuss the 166 literature records to date in which a total of 39 copepod species in 6 families have been reported in association with 33 species of the crinoid order Comatulida. Many of these associations have been reported just once. The respective localities cover 5 of the World Ocean's 12 ecoregions, with a notable concentration of both host and symbiont diversity in the Central and Western Indo-Pacific. In contrast, the documentation of copepod-crinoid associations in the Atlantic appears markedly limited. Copepods have been found predominantly in ectosymbiotic relationships with crinoids, with a lower incidence of endosymbiosis. Copepods of the genera Collocheres Canu, 1893 and Pseudanthessius Claus, 1889 are particularly prominent in the list, and the comatulid family Comatulidae displays the most diverse assortment of copepod associations. The current scope of knowledge encompasses a mere 5% of the potential crinoid host diversity, underscoring the need for more extensive research in this area.

Project description:Sustainable biopolymer additives offer a promising soil stabilisation methodology, with a strong potential to be tuned to soil's specific nature, allowing the tailoring of mechanical properties for a range of geotechnical applications. However, the biopolymer chemical characteristics driving soil mechanical property modifications have yet to be fully established. Within this study we employ a cross-scale approach, utilising the differing galactose:mannose (G:M) ratios of various Galactomannan biopolymers (Guar Gum G:M 1:2, Locust Bean Gum G:M 1:4, Cassia Gum G:M 1:5) to investigate the effect of microscale chemical functionality upon macroscale soil mechanical properties. Molecular weight effects are also investigated, utilising Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC). Soil systems comprising of SiO2 (100%) (SiO2) and a Mine Tailing (MT) exemplar composed of SiO2 (90%) + Fe2O3 (10%) (SiO2 + Fe) are investigated. The critical importance of biopolymer additive chemical functionality for the resultant soil mechanical properties, is demonstrated..For Galactomannan G:M 1:5 stabilised soils the 'high-affinity, high-strength', mannose-Fe interactions at the microscale (confirmed by mineral binding characterisation) are attributed to the 297% increase in the SiO2 + Fe systems Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS), relative to SiO2 only. Conversely for SiO2 Galactomannan-stabilised soils, when increasing the G:M ratio from 1:2 to 1:5, a 85% reduction in UCS is observed, attributed to mannose's inability to interact with SiO2. UCS variations of up to a factor of 12 were observed across the biopolymer-soil mixes studied, in line with theoretically and experimentally expected values, due to the differences in the G:M ratios. The limited impact of molecular weight upon soil strength properties is also shown in CMC-stabilised soils. When considering a soil's stiffness and energy absorbance, the importance of biopolymer-biopolymer interaction strength and quantity is discussed, further deciphering biopolymer characteristics driving soil property modifications. This study highlights the importance of biopolymer chemistry for biopolymer stabilisation studies, illustrating the use of simple low-cost, accessible chemistry-based instrumental tools and outlining key design principles for the tailoring of biopolymer-soil composites for specific geotechnical applications.Graphical abstractSupplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s11440-022-01732-0.

Project description:Neuronal activity propagates through the network during seizures, engaging brain dynamics at multiple scales. Such propagating events can be described through the avalanches framework, which can relate spatiotemporal activity at the microscale with global network properties. Interestingly, propagating avalanches in healthy networks are indicative of critical dynamics, where the network is organized to a phase transition, which optimizes certain computational properties. Some have hypothesized that the pathologic brain dynamics of epileptic seizures are an emergent property of microscale neuronal networks collectively driving the brain away from criticality. Demonstrating this would provide a unifying mechanism linking microscale spatiotemporal activity with emergent brain dysfunction during seizures. Here, we investigated the effect of drug-induced seizures on critical avalanche dynamics, using in vivo whole-brain two-photon imaging of GCaMP6s larval zebrafish (males and females) at single neuron resolution. We demonstrate that single neuron activity across the whole brain exhibits a loss of critical statistics during seizures, suggesting that microscale activity collectively drives macroscale dynamics away from criticality. We also construct spiking network models at the scale of the larval zebrafish brain, to demonstrate that only densely connected networks can drive brain-wide seizure dynamics away from criticality. Importantly, such dense networks also disrupt the optimal computational capacities of critical networks, leading to chaotic dynamics, impaired network response properties and sticky states, thus helping to explain functional impairments during seizures. This study bridges the gap between microscale neuronal activity and emergent macroscale dynamics and cognitive dysfunction during seizures.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Epileptic seizures are debilitating and impair normal brain function. It is unclear how the coordinated behavior of neurons collectively impairs brain function during seizures. To investigate this we perform fluorescence microscopy in larval zebrafish, which allows for the recording of whole-brain activity at single-neuron resolution. Using techniques from physics, we show that neuronal activity during seizures drives the brain away from criticality, a regime that enables both high and low activity states, into an inflexible regime that drives high activity states. Importantly, this change is caused by more connections in the network, which we show disrupts the ability of the brain to respond appropriately to its environment. Therefore, we identify key neuronal network mechanisms driving seizures and concurrent cognitive dysfunction.

Project description:Green infrastructure (GI) in urban areas may be adopted as a passive control system to reduce air pollutant concentrations. However, current dispersion models offer limited modelling options to evaluate its impact on ambient pollutant concentrations. The scope of this review revolves around the following question: how can GI be considered in readily available dispersion models to allow evaluation of its impacts on pollutant concentrations and health risk assessment? We examined the published literature on the parameterisation of deposition velocities and datasets for both particulate matter and gaseous pollutants that are required for deposition schemes. We evaluated the limitations of different air pollution dispersion models at two spatial scales - microscale (i.e. 10-500 m) and macroscale (i.e. 5-100 km) - in considering the effects of GI on air pollutant concentrations and exposure alteration. We conclude that the deposition schemes that represent GI impacts in detail are complex, resource-intensive, and involve an abundant volume of input data. An appropriate handling of GI characteristics (such as aerodynamic effect, deposition of air pollutants and surface roughness) in dispersion models is necessary for understanding the mechanism of air pollutant concentrations simulation in presence of GI at different spatial scales. The impacts of GI on air pollutant concentrations and health risk assessment (e.g., mortality, morbidity) are partly explored. The i-Tree tool with the BenMap model has been used to estimate the health outcomes of annually-averaged air pollutant removed by deposition over GI canopies at the macroscale. However, studies relating air pollution health risk assessments due to GI-related changes in short-term exposure, via pollutant concentrations redistribution at the microscale and enhanced atmospheric pollutant dilution by increased surface roughness at the macroscale, along with deposition, are rare. Suitable treatments of all physical and chemical processes in coupled dispersion-deposition models and assessments against real-world scenarios are vital for health risk assessments.
