New records of Harpiolaisodon (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) from the Chinese mainland.

ABSTRACT:

Background

The new species, Harpiolaisodon Kuo et al., 2006, was described from Taiwan, China. So far, no distribution of this species outside Taiwan has been reported.

New information

During two field investigations of small mammals in Guanyin Mountains Provincial Nature Reserve, Yuanyang, Yunnan, China, in April 2022 and May 2023, five individuals of Harpiola were collected in the mid-montane evergreen broad-leaved forest. Our morphological and molecular results reveal that these individuals from the Chinese mainland belong to Harpiolaisodon, extending the occurrence of this species well beyond its known distributions in Taiwan, China and Vietnam.

Tube-nosed variations-a new species of the genus Murina (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from China.

Project description:During a survey in 2014, several tube-nosed bats (Vespertilionidae: Murininae: Murina) were collected in Sichuan Province. Based on morphological characters, these bats did not match any species previously recorded from China. Morphometric analyses and phylogenetic inference based on mitochondrial and nuclear gene sequences indicated that they represented a new species, named here as Murina jinchui sp. nov. Although the new species is presently known only from Wolong National Nature Reserve, it is unlikely to be a rare species in the area based on our capture frequencies.

The complete mitochondrial genome of the far Eastern myotis: <i>Myotis bombinus</i> Thomas, 1906 in mainland of Korea (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae).

Project description:We have determined the second mitochondrial genome of Myotis bombinus Thomas, 1906 in mainland of Korea. The circular mitogenome of M. bombinus is 17,035 bp long which is slightly shorter than that of the previous mitogenome of M. bombinus. It includes 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNAs. The base composition was AT-biased (66.1%). Fifty single nucleotide polymorphisms and 14 insertions were identified between two mitogenomes of M. bombinus. Phylogenetic trees show that both M. bominus mitogenomes are clustered in one clade.

Range extension of Myotis midastactus (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae) to Paraguay.

Project description:BackgroundMyotis midastactus Moratelli and Wilson, 2014 (Vespertilionidae, Myotinae) was described from the Myotis simus Thomas, 1901 complex based on collections from the Bolivian Savannah.New informationFour vouchers previously assigned to M. simus from the Alto Chaco in Paraguay (West of the Paraguay River) are reassigned here to M. midastactus. These specimens extend the geographic distribution of M. midastactus 1200 km southward, and constitute the first evidence of the species in the country. Based on other material from the Brazilian Pantanal and Cerrado, Central Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina, we also discuss the identity of simus-like populations south of the Amazon Basin. The status of these populations is still unclear, but the little evidence we have at hand indicates that these populations may represent another taxon-M. guaycuru Proença, 1943; whereas M. simus seems to be restricted to the Amazon basin. This hypothesis is still very speculative and requires further investigation. With the assignment of material from Alto Chaco to M. midastactus, seven species of Myotis are confirmed for Paraguay: M. albescens, M. lavali, M. levis, M. midastactus, M. nigricans, M. riparius, and M. ruber.

The species is known for all South American countries except French Guiana and Chile.New informationBased on one specimen recently collected in French Guiana we fill part of the gap in the distribution of the species in South America. Myotis albescens occurs in the Guiana Shield with other four congeners, from which it can be distinguished by external and skull traits. As an aid to future identifications, we provide a key to this assemblage.

A new genus of vespertilionid bat: the end of a long journey for Joffre's Pipistrelle (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae).

Project description:Knowledge as to the taxonomic status of enigmatic bat species often is hindered by limited availability of specimens. This is particularly true for aerial-hawking bats that are difficult to catch. One such species, "Hypsugo" joffrei, was originally described in Nyctalus due to its long and slender wings, but subsequently transferred to Pipistrellus, and most recently to Hypsugo, on the basis of morphology. Analysis of newly available material, which more than doubles the known specimens of this taxon, demonstrates that it is morphologically and genetically distinct from all other bat genera. We accordingly describe it as belonging to a new, monotypic genus. We provide a detailed description of its external and craniodental traits, measurements, and assessment of genetic relationships, including barcode sequences to facilitate its rapid identification in future. The new genus belongs to a group that includes the recently described Cassistrellus, as well as Tylonycteris, and its closest relative, Philetor. We also describe the echolocation calls emitted by members of the taxon in different situations, which may facilitate finding them in previously unsampled locations. Based on the new data, the species occurs from Nepal to North Vietnam and China, which suggests that it could be more widespread than previously thought.

The complete mitochondrial genome of <i>Rhinolophus yunnanensis</i> (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae).

Project description:The mitochondrial genome of Rhinolophus yunnanensis (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae) is a circular molecule of 16,865 bp in length with a base composition of 31.2% A, 24.3% T, 29.6% C, 14.9% G. In the control region of R. yunnanensis, the sequence of 5'-CAACGTATACACG-3' repeats 18 times. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that R. yunnanensis is a sister clade to ((Rhinolophus sinicus sinicus + R. sinicus sinicus) + (R. macrotis + (R. pumilus + R. monoceros))).

Catalogue of primary types of Neotropical <i>Myotis</i> (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae).

Project description:Myotis comprises a diverse group of vespertilionid bats with worldwide distribution. Neotropical Myotis have an accentuated phenotypic conservatism, which makes species delimitation and identification difficult, hindering our understanding of the diversity, distribution, and phylogenetic relationships of taxa. To encourage new systematic reviews of the genus, a catalogue of the primary types and names is presented, current and in synonymy, for Neotropical Myotis. Currently 33 valid species (and three subspecies) are recognized, and their primary types are deposited in 12 scientific collections in the USA (30 types), Brazil (two types), England (two types), and France (one type). The names of 29 Neotropical Myotis species currently in synonymy were found. However, it is possible that some synonyms represent independent evolutionary lineages, considering recent results provided by taxonomic revisions.

Quantitative evaluation of individual food intake by insectivorous vespertilionid bats (Chiroptera, Vespertilionidae).

Project description:Insectivorous bats provide important ecosystem services, especially by suppressing and controlling the insects' biomass. To empirically quantify the number of insects consumed by European vespertilionid bats per night, we estimated their ratio of dry mass of feces to mass of consumed insects. This study combines the results of feeding in captivity and the data obtained in field surveys; dry mass of feces was measured in both cases. In captivity, we analyzed the effect of species, age and sex of bats, species of insects consumed and the mass of food portion on the dry mass of feces. Using coefficients of the regression model, we estimated the number of insects consumed by free-ranging bats based on dry mass of their feces. According to our estimates, on average, one individual of one of the largest European bat species, Nyctalusnoctula, consumes 2.2 g (ranging from 0.5 to 8.2 g) of insects per one feeding night, while the smallest European bats of genus Pipistrellus consume 0.4 g (ranging from 0.1 to 1.3 g), further confirming the importance of insectivorous bats for ecosystem services. This publication offers the novel method for the estimation of insects' biomass consumed by bats.

Mitochondrial genome of the <i>Harpiocephalus harpia</i> (Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae) from China.

Project description:In this study, a complete mitochondrial genome of a female Harpiocephalus harpia from Zhejiang Province, China, was sequenced using Illumina Hiseq. The genome is ∼16,400 bp in length, containing 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes, and a control region. Most of the genes were encoded on the H-strand, except for 8 tRNA and ND6 genes. Phylogenetic tree using maximum likelihood suggests H. harpia is sister taxon to Murina. The complete mitochondrial genome herein provides basic information for future taxonomic and phylogenetic studies.

Unusual Pipistrelle: Taxonomic Position of the Malayan Noctule (Pipistrellus stenopterus; Vespertilionidae; Chiroptera).

Project description:Sergei V. Kruskop, Evgeniya N. Solovyeva, and Anna D. Kaznadzey (2018) Despite huge progress in the systematics of bats and, in particular, of the Vespertilionidae family in latest years, the taxonomic position of a number of remarkable bat species has been uncertain until now, partly because of limits in acceptable comparative material. Researchers have previously placed the Malayan noctule, Pipistrellus stenopterus, into Nyctalus, because of similar body shape and proportions, or into Pipistrellus, based on karyological analysis. This study reassesses Pipistrellus stenopterus using available collection material and compares it to various members of Nyctalus and Pipistrellus, as well as with some other related and similar genera, based on respective morphological and molecular genetic features. This species demonstrates vast morphological peculiarities compared to other Pipistrellus-like bats. Nonetheless, both mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers unequivocally place it close to other Asian pipistrelles, most probably in a sister position to the "javanicus" species group. We propose establishing P. stenopterus as a separate subgenus, Alionoctula. Our results also confirm that Pipistrellus is paraphyletic in its current state, and we suggest that further studies explore its internal taxonomy and limits.
