ABSTRACT: Objectives
Countries in sub-Saharan Africa are seeking to improve access to healthcare through health insurance. However, patients still bear non-medical costs and opportunity costs in terms of lost work days. The burden of these costs is particularly high for people with chronic diseases (CDs) who require regular healthcare. From November 2020 to January 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional patient survey at 35 healthcare facilities in rural Tanzania. Using the human capital approach to value the non-medical cost of seeking healthcare, we employed multilevel linear regression to analyse the impact of CDs and health insuranc
