Worldwide divergence of values.

ABSTRACT: Social scientists have long debated the nature of cultural change in a modernizing and globalizing world. Some scholars predicted that national cultures would converge by adopting social values typical of Western democracies. Others predicted that cultural differences in values would persist or even increase over time. We test these competing predictions by analyzing survey data from 1981 to 2022 (n = 406,185) from 76 national cultures. We find evidence of global value divergence. Values emphasizing tolerance and self-expression have diverged most sharply, especially between high-income Western countries and the rest of the world. We also find that countries with similar per-capita GDP levels have held similar values over the last 40 years. Over time, however, geographic proximity has emerged as an increasingly strong correlate of value similarity, indicating that values have diverged globally but converged regionally.

Project description:Abstract: The impact of pesticide residues on human health is a worldwide problem, as human exposure to pesticides can occur through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Regulatory jurisdictions have promulgated the standard values for pesticides in residential soil, air, drinking water, and agricultural commodity for years. Until now, more than 19,400 pesticide soil regulatory guidance values (RGVs) and 5400 pesticide drinking water maximum concentration levels (MCLs) have been regulated by 54 and 102 nations, respectively. Over 90 nations have provided pesticide agricultural commodity maximum residue limits (MRLs) for at least one of the 12 most commonly consumed agricultural foods. A total of 22 pesticides have been regulated with more than 100 soil RGVs, and 25 pesticides have more than 100 drinking water MCLs. This research indicates that those RGVs and MCLs for an individual pesticide could vary over seven (DDT drinking water MCLs), eight (Lindane soil RGVs), or even nine (Dieldrin soil RGVs) orders of magnitude. Human health risk uncertainty bounds and the implied total exposure mass burden model were applied to analyze the most commonly regulated and used pesticides for human health risk control. For the top 27 commonly regulated pesticides in soil, there are at least 300 RGVs (8% of the total) that are above all of the computed upper bounds for human health risk uncertainty. For the top 29 most-commonly regulated pesticides in drinking water, at least 172 drinking water MCLs (5% of the total) exceed the computed upper bounds for human health risk uncertainty; while for the 14 most widely used pesticides, there are at least 310 computed implied dose limits (28.0% of the total) that are above the acceptable daily intake values. The results show that some worldwide standard values were not derived conservatively enough to avoid human health risk by the pesticides, and that some values were not computed comprehensively by considering all major human exposure pathways.

Project description:Rezafungin is a new echinocandin under development for the treatment of candidemia and invasive candidiasis. CLSI recently approved provisional susceptible-only breakpoints and epidemiological cutoff values for Candida spp. and rezafungin. The activities of rezafungin and comparators against 2019 to 2020 invasive fungal isolates was evaluated by applying the new CLSI breakpoints. Rezafungin demonstrated potent activity against Candida albicans (MIC50/MIC90, 0.03/0.06 mg/L; 100.0% susceptible), Candida tropicalis (MIC50/MIC90, 0.03/0.06 mg/L; 100% susceptible), Candida glabrata (MIC50/MIC90, 0.06/0.06 mg/L; 98.3% susceptible), Candida krusei (MIC50/MIC90, 0.03/0.03 mg/L; 100% susceptible), and Candida dubliniensis (MIC50/MIC90, 0.06/0.12 mg/L; 100% susceptible) when tested by the CLSI broth microdilution method. Rezafungin inhibited 99.6% of Candida parapsilosis isolates (MIC50/MIC90, 1/2 mg/L) at the susceptible breakpoint of ≤2 mg/L. All C. albicans, C. tropicalis, and C. krusei isolates, as well as most C. glabrata (96.2% to 97.9%) and C. parapsilosis (86.2% to 100%) isolates, were susceptible to comparator echinocandins. Fluconazole resistance was detected among 0.5%, 4.5%, 10.5%, and 1.2% of C. albicans, C. glabrata, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis isolates, respectively. All echinocandins displayed limited activity against Cryptococcus neoformans. Rezafungin and other echinocandins were active against Aspergillus fumigatus (minimum effective concentration for 90% of isolates tested [MEC90] range, 0.015 to 0.06 mg/L) and Aspergillus section Flavi (MEC90 range, 0.015 to 0.03 mg/L). All but 16 (8.6%) A. fumigatus isolates were susceptible to voriconazole, and 100% of Aspergillus section Flavi isolates were WT to mold-active azoles. When applying the CLSI clinical breakpoints, rezafungin displayed high susceptibility rates (>98.0%) against Candida isolates from invasive fungal infections and showed potent activity against Aspergillus isolates.
