ZnO Nanocages Decorated with Au@AgAu Yolk-Shell Nanomaterials for SERS-Based Detection of Hyperuricemia.

ABSTRACT: Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is widely recognized as a highly sensitive technology for chemical detection and biological sensing. In SERS-based biomedical applications, developing highly efficient sensing platforms based on SERS plays a pivotal role in monitoring disease biomarker levels and facilitating the early detection of cancer biomarkers. Hyperuricemia, characterized by abnormally high concentrations of uric acid (UA) in the blood, was associated with a range of diseases, such as gouty arthritis, heart disease, and acute kidney injury. Recent reports have demonstrated the correlation between UA concentrations in blood and tears. In this work, we report the fabrication of SERS substrates utilizing ZnO nanocages and yolk-shell-structured plasmonic nanomaterials for the noninvasive detection of UA in tears. This innovative SERS substrate enables noninvasive and sensitive detection of UA to prevent hyperuricemia-related diseases.

Au Nanoparticles (NPs) Decorated Co Doped ZnO Semiconductor (Co400-ZnO/Au) Nanocomposites for Novel SERS Substrates.

Project description:Au nanoparticles were decorated on the surface of Co-doped ZnO with a certain ratio of Co2+/Co3+ to obtain a novel semiconductor-metal composite. The optimal substrate, designated as Co400-ZnO/Au, is beneficial to the promotion of separation efficiency of electron and hole in a semiconductor excited under visible laser exposure, which the enhances localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the Au nanoparticles. As an interesting finding, during Co doping, quantum dots of ZnO are generated, which strengthen the strong semiconductor metal interaction (SSSMI) effect. Eventually, the synergistic effect effectively advances the surface enhancement Raman scattering (SERS) performance of Co400-ZnO/Au composite. The enhancement mechanism is addressed in-depth by morphologic characterization, UV-visible, X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, density functional theory, and finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations. By using Co400-ZnO/Au, SERS detection of Rhodamine 6G presents a limit of detection (LOD) of 1 × 10-9 M. As a real application, the Co400-ZnO/Au-based SERS method is utilized to inspect tyramine in beer and the detectable concentration of 1 × 10-8 M is achieved. In this work, the doping strategy is expected to realize a quantum effect, triggering a SSSMI effect for developing promising SERS substrates in future.

Localized Energy Band Bending in ZnO Nanorods Decorated with Au Nanoparticles.

Project description:Surface decoration by means of metal nanostructures is an effective way to locally modify the electronic properties of materials. The decoration of ZnO nanorods by means of Au nanoparticles was experimentally investigated and modelled in terms of energy band bending. ZnO nanorods were synthesized by chemical bath deposition. Decoration with Au nanoparticles was achieved by immersion in a colloidal solution obtained through the modified Turkevich method. The surface of ZnO nanorods was quantitatively investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry. The Photoluminescence and Cathodoluminescence of bare and decorated ZnO nanorods were investigated, as well as the band bending through Mott-Schottky electrochemical analyses. Decoration with Au nanoparticles induced a 10 times reduction in free electrons below the surface of ZnO, together with a decrease in UV luminescence and an increase in visible-UV intensity ratio. The effect of decoration was modelled with a nano-Schottky junction at ZnO surface below the Au nanoparticle with a Multiphysics approach. An extensive electric field with a specific halo effect formed beneath the metal-semiconductor interface. ZnO nanorod decoration with Au nanoparticles was shown to be a versatile method to tailor the electronic properties at the semiconductor surface.

ZnO Tips Dotted with Au Nanoparticles-Advanced SERS Determination of Trace Nicotine.

Project description:Long-term exposure to nicotine causes a variety of human diseases, such as lung damage/adenocarcinoma, nausea and vomiting, headache, incontinence and heart failure. In this work, as a surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate, zinc oxide (ZnO) tips decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are fabricated and designated as ZnO/Au. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect of a ZnO semiconductor with morphology of tips and AuNPs, the ZnO/Au-based SERS assay for nicotine demonstrates high sensitivity and the limit of detection 8.9 × 10-12 mol/L is reached, as well as the corresponding linear dynamic detection range of 10-10-10-6 mol/L. Additionally, the signal reproducibility offered by the SERS substrate could realize the reliable determination of trace nicotine in saliva.

Assembled Au/ZnO Nano-Urchins for SERS Sensing of the Pesticide Thiram.

Project description:In this paper, we are relating a significant improvement of the SERS effect achieved with assembled Au/ZnO nano-urchins. This improvement is realized thanks to an excellent capacity of adsorption (denoted K) for thiram molecules on these plasmonic nano-urchins, which is a key point to be taken into account for obtaining a SERS spectrum. Moreover, this outlook may be employed for different types of plasmonic substrates and for a wide number of molecules. We studied the capacity of the assembled Au/ZnO nano-urchins to be sensitive to the pesticide thiram, which adsorbs well on metals via the metal-sulfur bond. For the thiram detection, we found a limit concentration of 10 pM, a value of this capacity of adsorption (K) of 9.5 × 106 M-1 and a factor of analytical enhancement equal to 1.9 × 108.

Magnetic-plasmonic Ni@Au core-shell nanoparticle arrays and their SERS properties.

Project description:In this paper, large-area magnetic-plasmonic Ni@Au core-shell nanoparticle arrays (NPAs) with tunable compositions were successfully fabricated by a direct laser interference ablation (DLIA) incorporated with thermal dewetting method. The magnetic properties of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs were analyzed and the saturation magnetization (M s) of the Ni80@Au20 nanoparticles was found to be higher than that of nickel-only nanoparticles with the same diameter. Using Rhodamine 6G (R6G) as a Raman reporter molecule, the surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) property of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs with a grain size distribution of 48 ± 42 nm and a short-distance order of about 200 nm was examined. A SERS enhancement factor of 2.5 × 106 was realized on the Ni50@Au50 NPA substrate, which was 9 times higher than that for Au nanoparticles with the same size distribution. This was due to the enhanced local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) between the ferromagnetic Ni cores and the surface polariton of the Au shells of each nanoparticle. The fabrication of the Ni@Au core-shell NPAs with different compositions offers a new avenue to tailor the optical and magnetic properties of the nanostructured films for chemical and diagnostic applications.

Enhanced Acetone Sensing Properties Based on Au-Pd Decorated ZnO Nanorod Gas Sensor.

Project description:The mature processes of metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have attracted considerable interest. However, the low sensitivity of metal oxide semiconductor gas sensors is still challenging, and constrains its practical applications. Bimetallic nanoparticles are of interest owing to their excellent catalytic properties. This excellent feature of bimetallic nanoparticles can solve the problems existing in MOS gas sensors, such as the low response, high operating temperature and slow response time. To enhance acetone sensing performance, we successfully synthesized Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods. In this work, we discovered that Au-Pd nanoparticles modified on ZnO nanorods can remarkably enhance sensor response. The Au-Pd/ZnO gas sensor has long-term stability and an excellent response/recovery process. This excellent sensing performance is attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles. Moreover, the electronic and chemical sensitization of noble metals also makes a great contribution. This work presents a simple method for preparing Au-Pd/ZnO nanorods and provides a new solution for the detection of acetone based on metal oxide semiconductor.

Towards the Continuous Hydrothermal Synthesis of ZnO@Mg2Al-CO3 Core-Shell Composite Nanomaterials.

Project description:Core-shell Zinc Oxide/Layered Double Hydroxide (ZnO@LDH) composite nanomaterials have been produced by a one-step continuous hydrothermal synthesis process, in an attempt to further enhance the application potential of layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanomaterials. The synthesis involves two hydrothermal reactors in series with the first producing a ZnO core and the second producing the Mg2Al-CO3 shell. Crystal domain length of single phase ZnO and composite ZnO was 25 nm and 42 nm, respectively. The ZnO@LDH composite had a specific surface area of 76 m2 g-1, which was larger than ZnO or Mg2Al-CO3 when produced separately (53 m2 g-1 and 58 m2 g-1, respectively). The increased specific surface area is attributed to the structural arrangement of the Mg2Al-CO3 in the composite. Platelets are envisaged to nucleate on the core and grow outwards, thus reducing the face-face stacking that occurs in conventional Mg2Al-CO3 synthesis. The Mg/Al ratio in the single phase LDH was close to the theoretical ratio of 2, but the Mg/Al ratio in the composite was 1.27 due to the formation of Zn2Al-CO3 LDH from residual Zn2+ ions. NaOH concentration was also found to influence Mg/Al ratio, with lower NaOH resulting in a lower Mg/Al ratio. NaOH concentration also affected morphology and specific surface area, with reduced NaOH content in the second reaction stage causing a dramatic increase in specific surface area (> 250 m2 g-1). The formation of a core-shell composite material was achieved through continuous synthesis; however, the final product was not entirely ZnO@Mg2Al-CO3. The product contained a mixture of ZnO, Mg2Al-CO3, Zn2Al-CO3, and the composite material. Whilst further optimisation is required in order to remove other crystalline impurities from the synthesis, this research acts as a stepping stone towards the formation of composite materials via a one-step continuous synthesis.

Star-Shaped Fe3-xO4-Au Core-Shell Nanoparticles: From Synthesis to SERS Application.

Project description:In this work, the preparation of magneto-plasmonic granular nanostructures and their evaluation as efficient substrates for magnetically assisted surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing are discussed. These nanostructures consist of star-shaped gold Au shell grown on iron oxide Fe3-xO4 multicores. They were prepared by seed-mediated growth of anisotropic, in shape gold nanosatellites attached to the surface of polyol-made iron oxide polycrystals. In practice, the 180 nm-sized spherical iron oxide particles were functionalized by (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to become positively charged and to interact, in solution, with negatively charged 2 nm-sized Au single crystals, leading to nanohybrids. These hybrids acted subsequently as nucleation platforms for the growth of a branched gold shell, when they were contacted to a fresh HAuCl4 gold salt aqueous solution, in the presence of hydroquinone, a reducing agent, for an optimized nominal weight ratio between both the starting hybrids and the gold salt. As expected, the resulting nanocomposites exhibit a high saturation magnetization at room temperature and a rough enough plasmonic surface, making them easily attracted by a lab. magnet, while exhibiting a great number of SERS hot spots. Preliminary SERS detection assays were successfully performed on diluted aqueous thiram solution (10-8 M), using these engineered substrates, highlighting their capability to be used as chemical trace sensors.

Enhanced Response for Foodborne Pathogens Detection by Au Nanoparticles Decorated ZnO Nanosheets Gas Sensor.

Project description:Listeria monocytogenes is a hazardous foodborne pathogen that is able to cause acute meningitis, encephalitis, and sepsis to humans. The efficient detection of 3-hydroxy-2-butanone, which has been verified as a biomarker for the exhalation of Listeria monocytogenes, can feasibly evaluate whether the bacteria are contained in food. Herein, we developed an outstanding 3-hydroxy-2-butanone gas sensor based on the microelectromechanical systems using Au/ZnO NS as a sensing material. In this work, ZnO nanosheets were synthesized by a hydrothermal reaction, and Au nanoparticles (~5.5 nm) were prepared via an oleylamine reduction method. Then, an ultrasonic treatment was carried out to modified Au nanoparticles onto ZnO nanosheets. The XRD, BET, TEM, and XPS were used to characterize their morphology, microstructure, catalytic structure, specific surface area, and chemical composition. The response of the 1.0% Au/ZnO NS sensors vs. 25 ppm 3-hydroxy-2-butanone was up to 174.04 at 230 °C. Moreover, these sensors presented fast response/recovery time (6 s/7 s), great selectivity, and an outstanding limit of detection (lower than 0.5 ppm). This work is full of promise for developing a nondestructive, rapid and practical sensor, which would improve Listeria monocytogenes evaluation in foods.

Nanoarchitectonics to entrap living cells in silica-based systems: encapsulations with yolk-shell and sepiolite nanomaterials.

Project description:In the present work, the bottom-up fabrication of biohybrid materials using a nanoarchitectonics approach has been applied to entrap living cells. Unicellular microorganisms, that is, cyanobacteria and yeast cells, have been immobilized in silica and silicate-based substrates organized as nanostructured materials. In a first attempt, matrices based on bionanocomposites of chitosan and alginate incorporating sepiolite clay mineral and shaped as films, beads, or foams have been explored for the immobilization of cyanobacteria. It has been observed that this type of biohybrid substrates leads to serious problems regarding the long-time survival of the encapsulated microorganisms. Alternative procedures using silica-based matrices with low sodium content, generated by sol-gel methods, as well as pre-synthesised yolk-shell bionanohybrids have been studied subsequently. Optical microscopy and SEM confirm that the silica shell microstructures provide a reduced contact between cells. The inorganic matrix increases the survival of the cells and maintains their bioactivity. Thus, the encapsulation efficiency is improved compared to the approach using a direct contact of cells in a silica matrix. Encapsulated yeast produced ethanol over a period of several days, pointing out the useful biocatalytic potential of the approach and suggesting further optimization of the present protocols.
