Nanostructured SnO₂ Thin Films Based on a Convenient Chemical Deposition for Sensitive Detection of Ethanol.

ABSTRACT: A specific matrix sensor that can operate at low temperatures and has a high sensing response is crucial for monitoring flammable VOC gases. In this study, a nanostructured SnO₂ thin film was successfully produced using a suitable chemical deposition method, and its sensing properties were comprehensively analyzed. The SEM images revealed that the thin film of the nanostructured SnO₂ is made up of two different sizes of broccoli-like structure nanoparticles. The sensor, which is based on this unique micronano structure, demonstrated a high sensing response (44), low operating temperature (200 °C), and fast response time (6s). Additionally, the nanostructured sensor exhibited excellent resistance to humidity interference and long-term stability. Moreover, DFT is employed to evaluate the electronic properties and to systematically explain the gas sensing mechanism of the nanostructured sensor based on the SnO₂ thin film.

Novel Heteroleptic Tin(II) Complexes Capable of Forming SnO and SnO2 Thin Films Depending on Conditions Using Chemical Solution Deposition.

Project description:A new heteroleptic complex series of tin was synthesized by the salt metathesis reaction of SnX2 (X = Cl, Br, and I) with aminoalkoxide and various N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligands. The complexes, [ClSn(dmamp)]2 (1), [BrSn(dmamp)]2 (2), and [ISn(dmamp)]2 (3), were prepared from the salt metathesis reaction of SnX2 with one equivalent of dmamp; [Sn(dmamp)(empa)]2 (4), [Sn(dmamp)(mdpa)]2 (5), and [Sn(dmamp)(edpa)]2 (6) were prepared via the salt metathesis reaction using complex 2 with one equivalent of N-alkoxy-functionalized carboxamide ligand. Complexes 1-5 displayed dimeric molecular structures with tin metal centers interconnected by μ2-O bonding via the alkoxy oxygen atom. The molecular structures of complexes 1-5 showed distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometries with lone pair electrons in the equatorial position. Using complex 6 as a tin precursor, SnO x films were deposited by chemical solution deposition (CSD) and subsequent post-deposition annealing (PDA) at high temperatures. SnO and SnO2 films were selectively obtained under controlled PDA atmospheres of argon and oxygen, respectively. The SnO films featured a tetragonal romarchite structure with high crystallinity and a preferred growth orientation along the (101) plane. They also exhibited a lower transmittance of >52% at 400 nm due to an optical band gap of 2.9 eV. In contrast, the SnO2 films exhibited a tetragonal cassiterite crystal structure and an extremely high transmittance of >97% at 400 nm was observed with an optical band gap of 3.6 eV.

Nanostructured Oxide (SnO2, FTO) Thin Films for Energy Harvesting: A Significant Increase in Thermoelectric Power at Low Temperature.

Project description:Previous studies have shown that undoped and doped SnO2 thin films have better optical and electrical properties. This study aims to investigate the thermoelectric properties of two distinct semiconducting oxide thin films, namely SnO2 and F-doped SnO2 (FTO), by the nebulizer spray pyrolysis technique. An X-ray diffraction study reveals that the synthesized films exhibit a tetragonal structure with the (200) preferred orientation. The film structural quality increases from SnO2 to FTO due to the substitution of F- ions into the host lattice. The film thickness increases from 530 nm for SnO2 to 650 nm for FTO films. Room-temperature electrical resistivity decreases from (8.96 ± 0.02) × 10-2 Ω·cm to (4.64 ± 0.01) × 10-3 Ω·cm for the SnO2 and FTO thin films, respectively. This is due to the increase in the carrier density of the films, (2.92 ± 0.02) × 1019 cm-3 (SnO2) and (1.63 ± 0.03) × 1020 cm-3 (FTO), caused by anionic substitution. It is confirmed that varying the temperature (K) enhances the electron transport properties. The obtained Seebeck coefficient (S) increases as the temperature is increased, up to 360 K. The synthesized films exhibit the S value of -234 ± 3 μV/K (SnO2) and -204 ± 3 μV/K (FTO) at 360 K. The estimated power factor (PF) drastically increases from ~70 (μW/m·K2) to ~900 (μW/m·K2) for the SnO2 and FTO film, respectively.

Oxidative chemical vapor deposition of polyaniline thin films.

Project description:Polyaniline (PANI) is synthesized via oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) using aniline as monomer and antimony pentachloride as oxidant. Microscopy and spectroscopy indicate that oCVD processing conditions influence the PANI film chemistry, oxidation, and doping level. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicate that a substrate temperature of 90 °C is needed to minimize the formation of oligomers during polymerization. Lower substrate temperatures, such as 25 °C, lead to a film that mostly includes oligomers. Increasing the oxidant flowrate to nearly match the monomer flowrate favors the deposition of PANI in the emeraldine state, and varying the oxidant flowrate can directly influence the oxidation state of PANI. Changing the reactor pressure from 700 to 35 mTorr does not have a significant effect on the deposited film chemistry, indicating that the oCVD PANI process is not concentration dependent. This work shows that oCVD can be used for depositing PANI and for effectively controlling the chemical state of PANI.

Hafnium Oxide Nanostructured Thin Films: Electrophoretic Deposition Process and DUV Photolithography Patterning.

Project description:In the frame of the nanoarchitectonic concept, the objective of this study was to develop simple and easy methods to ensure the preparation of polymorphic HfO2 thin film materials (<200 nm) having the best balance of patterning potential, reproducibility and stability to be used in optical, sensing or electronic fields. The nanostructured HfO2 thin films with micropatterns or continuous morphologies were synthesized by two different methods, i.e., the micropatterning of sol-gel solutions by deep ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography or the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of HfO2 nanoparticles (HfO2-NPs). Amorphous and monoclinic HfO2 micropatterned nanostructured thin films (HfO2-DUV) were prepared by using a sol-gel solution precursor (HfO2-SG) and spin-coating process following by DUV photolithography, whereas continuous and dense monoclinic HfO2 nanostructured thin films (HfO2-EPD) were prepared by the direct EPD of HfO2-NPs. The HfO2-NPs were prepared by a hydrothermal route and studied through the changing aging temperature, pH and reaction time parameters to produce nanocrystalline particles. Subsequently, based on the colloidal stability study, suspensions of the monoclinic HfO2-NPs with morphologies near spherical, spindle- and rice-like shapes were used to prepare HfO2-EPD thin films on conductive indium-tin oxide-coated glass substrates. Morphology, composition and crystallinity of the HfO2-NPs and thin films were investigated by powder and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The EPD and DUV photolithography performances were explored and, in this study, it was clearly demonstrated that these two complementary methods are suitable, simple and effective processes to prepare controllable and tunable HfO2 nanostructures as with homogeneous, dense or micropatterned structures.

Epitaxial K0.5Na0.5NbO3 thin films by aqueous chemical solution deposition.

Project description:We report on an environmentally friendly and versatile aqueous chemical solution deposition route to epitaxial K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) thin films. The route is based on the spin coating of an aqueous solution of soluble precursors on SrTiO3 single crystal substrates followed by pyrolysis at 400°C and annealing at 800°C using rapid thermal processing. Strongly textured films with homogeneous thickness were obtained on three different crystallographic orientations of SrTiO3. Epitaxial films were obtained on (111) SrTiO3 substrates, while films consisting of an epitaxial layer close to the substrate followed by an oriented polycrystalline layer were obtained on (100) and (110) SrTiO3 substrates. A K2Nb4O11 secondary phase was observed on the surface of the thin films due to the evaporation of alkali species, while the use of an NaCl/KCl flux reduced the amount of the secondary phase. Ferroelectric behaviour of the films was investigated by PFM, and almost no dependence on the film crystallographic orientation was observed. The permittivity and loss tangent of the films with the NaCl/KCl flux were 870 and 0.04 (100-orientation) and 2250 and 0.025 (110-orientation), respectively, at 1 kHz.

Influence of Water on Chemical Vapor Deposition of Ni and Co thin films from ethanol solutions of acetylacetonate precursors.

Project description:In chemical vapor deposition experiments with pulsed spray evaporation (PSE-CVD) of liquid solutions of Ni and Co acetylacetonate in ethanol as precursors, the influence of water in the feedstock on the composition and growth kinetics of deposited Ni and Co metal films was systematically studied. Varying the water concentration in the precursor solutions, beneficial as well as detrimental effects of water on the metal film growth, strongly depending on the concentration of water and the β-diketonate in the precursor, were identified. For 2.5 mM Ni(acac)2 precursor solutions, addition of 0.5 vol% water improves growth of a metallic Ni film and reduces carbon contamination, while addition of 1.0 vol% water and more leads to significant oxidation of deposited Ni. By tuning the concentration of both, Ni(acac)2 and water in the precursor solution, the fraction of Ni metal and Ni oxide in the film or the film morphology can be adjusted. In the case of Co(acac)2, even smallest amounts of water promote complete oxidation of the deposited film. All deposited films were analyzed with respect to chemical composition quasi in situ by XPS, their morphology was evaluated after deposition by SEM.

Optimized Atmospheric-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition Thermochromic VO2 Thin Films for Intelligent Window Applications.

Project description:Monoclinic vanadium(IV) oxide (VO2) has been widely studied for energy-efficient glazing applications because of its thermochromic properties, displaying a large change in transmission of near-IR wavelengths between the hot and cold states. The optimization of the reaction between VCl4 and ethyl acetate via atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) was shown to produce thin films of monoclinic VO2 with excellent thermochromic properties (ΔT sol = 12%). The tailoring of the thermochromic and visible light transmission was shown to be possible by altering the density and morphology of the deposited films. The films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic-force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, ellipsometry, and UV-vis spectrometry. This article provides useful design rules for the synthesis of high-quality VO2 thin films by APCVD.

Incompatibility of Pure SnO2 Thin Films for Room-Temperature Gas Sensing Application.

Project description:Despite the high sensitivity and selectivity, the high operating temperature required for activation energy of tin oxide (SnO2) still stands as a drawback for SnO2 based gas sensors. In this work, the SnO2 thin films were deposited through spray pyrolysis and were subjected to gas sensing at 27 °C (room temperature) towards different gases. The films exhibited a consistently low response of approximately 1 when tested to various VOCs. The type, concentration, and mobility of charge carriers were determined from the Hall measurements. The high carrier concentration accompanied by poor mobility and grain boundary scattering is supposed to hinder its performance at room temperature. The obtained film had spherical morphology, which lead to grain boundary scatterings and decreased the mobility of carriers.

Atomic Layer Deposition of Photoconductive Cu2O Thin Films.

Project description:Herein, we report an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for Cu2O thin films using copper(II) acetate [Cu(OAc)2] and water vapor as precursors. This precursor combination enables the deposition of phase-pure, polycrystalline, and impurity-free Cu2O thin films at temperatures of 180-220 °C. The deposition of Cu(I) oxide films from a Cu(II) precursor without the use of a reducing agent is explained by the thermally induced reduction of Cu(OAc)2 to the volatile copper(I) acetate, CuOAc. In addition to the optimization of ALD process parameters and characterization of film properties, we studied the Cu2O films in the fabrication of photoconductor devices. Our proof-of-concept devices show that approximately 20 nm thick Cu2O films can be used for photodetection in the visible wavelength range and that the thin film photoconductors exhibit improved device characteristics in comparison to bulk Cu2O crystals.

Tailoring of Multisource Deposition Conditions towards Required Chemical Composition of Thin Films

Project description:The model to tailor the required chemical composition of thin films fabricated via multisource deposition, exploiting basic physicochemical constants of source materials, is developed. The model is experimentally verified for the two-source depositions of chalcogenide thin films from Ga–Sb–Te system (tie-lines GaSb–GaTe and GaSb–Te). The thin films are deposited by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering using GaSb, GaTe, and Te targets. Prepared thin films are characterized by means of energy dispersive X-ray analysis coupled with a scanning electron microscope to determine the chemical composition and by variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometry to establish film thickness. Good agreement between results of calculations and experimentally determined compositions of the co-deposited thin films is achieved for both the above-mentioned tie-lines. Moreover, in spite of all the applied simplifications, the proposed model is robust to be generally used for studies where the influence of thin film composition on their properties is investigated.
