Accuracy, Repeatability, and Reproducibility of a Hand-Held Structured-Light 3D Scanner across Multi-Site Settings in Lower Limb Prosthetics.

ABSTRACT: The aim of this work was to assess the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of a hand-held, structured-light 3D scanner (EINScan Pro 2X Plus with High Definition Prime Pack, SHINING 3D Tech. Co., Ltd., Hangzhou, China), to support its potential use in multi-site settings on lower limb prosthetics. Four limb models with different shapes were fabricated and scanned with a metrological 3D scanner (EINScan Laser FreeScan 5X, SHINING 3D Tech. Co., Ltd., Hangzhou, China) by a professional operator (OP0). Limb models were then mailed to three sites where two operators (OP1, OP2) scanned them using their own structured-light 3D scanner (same model). OP1 scanned limb models twice (OP1-A, OP1-B). OP0, OP1-A, and OP2 scans were compared for accuracy, OP1-A and OP1-B for repeatability, and OP1-A and OP2 for reproducibility. Among all comparisons, the mean radial error was <0.25 mm, mean angular error was <4°, and root mean square error of the radial distance was <1 mm. Moreover, limits of agreement were <3.5% for perimeters and volumes. By comparing these results with respect to clinically-relevant thresholds and to the literature available on other 3D scanners, we conclude that the EINScan Pro 2X Plus 3D Scanner with High Definition Prime Pack has good accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility, supporting its use in multi-site settings.

Project description:BackgroundMagnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is an important tool for noninvasive imaging of biliary disease, however, its assessment is currently subjective, resulting in the need for objective biomarkers.PurposeTo investigate the accuracy, scan/rescan repeatability, and cross-scanner reproducibility of a novel quantitative MRCP tool on phantoms and in vivo. Additionally, to report normative ranges derived from the healthy cohort for duct measurements and tree-level summary metrics.Study typeProspective.Phantoms/subjectsPhantoms: two bespoke designs, one with varying tube-width, curvature, and orientation, and one exhibiting a complex structure based on a real biliary tree. Excellent phantom repeatability was observed, with LoA from -0.4 to 0.4 mm. Good reproducibility was observed across the six scanners for both phantoms, with a range of LoA from -1.1 to 0.5 mm. Inter- and intraobserver agreement was high. Quantitative MRCP detected strictures and dilatations in the phantom with 76.6% and 85.9% sensitivity and 100% specificity in both. Patients and healthy volunteers exhibited significant differences in metrics including common bile duct (CBD) maximum diameter (7.6 mm vs. 5.2 mm P = 0.002), and overall biliary tree volume 12.36 mL vs. 4.61 mL, P = 0.0026).Data conclusionThe results indicate that quantitative MRCP provides accurate, repeatable, and reproducible measurements capable of objectively assessing cholangiopathic change. Project description:Background:The diagnostic performance of an automated breast volume scanner (ABVS) compared with that of a hand-held ultrasound (HHUS) for breast cancer remains unclear. We performed a meta-analysis to compare the diagnostic performances of the ABVS and HHUS for breast cancer. Methods:We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane, and SinoMed databases to identify eligible studies up until November 14, 2018. Studies comparing ABVS and HHUS for differentiating benign and malignant breast tumors were included. A meta-analysis was performed to generate pooled diagnostic accuracy parameters [sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), area under the curve (AUC), and the Q* index] and detection rates for ABVS and HHUS. Results:Nine studies involving 1,376 patients and 1,527 lesions were included in the meta-analysis for diagnostic accuracy. The pooled sensitivity was 0.93 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.91-0.95] for ABVS and 0.90 (95% CI, 0.88-0.92) for HHUS, and the pooled specificity was 0.86 (95% CI, 0.83-0.88) for ABVS and 0.82 (95% CI, 0.79-0.84) for HHUS. The pooled DOR was 88.66 (95% CI, 51.44-152.78) for ABVS and 41.06 for HHUS (95% CI, 26.58-63.42). The AUC of the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) was 0.9496 for ABVS and 0.9143 for HHUS, and the Q* index was 0.8899 for ABVS and 0.8469 for HHUS. Meta-regression showed no significant difference between the diagnostic accuracy of ABVS and HHUS (P=0.0771). No publication bias was found. Thirteen published studies involving 1,047 pathologically confirmed malignant lesions were included to generate a pooled detection rate. The pooled detection rate was 1.00 (95% CI, 1.00-1.00) for both ABVS and HHUS, for which a publication bias was found. Conclusions:ABVS can be used as an appropriate screening tool for breast cancer as well as HHUS in diagnostic accuracy and detection rate. Considering other advantages of ABVS including non-radioactivity, sensitivity to dense breast, three-dimensional reconstruction, time-saving and repeatability, it might be a promising screening tool for young or dense-breast women in the future.

Project description:BackgroundQuantitative diffusion-weighted MRI (DW-MRI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI) have the potential to impact patient care by providing noninvasive biological information in breast cancer.Purpose/hypothesisTo quantify the repeatability, reproducibility, and accuracy of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and T1 -mapping of the breast in community radiology practices.Study typeProspective.Subjects/phantomIce-water DW-MRI and T1 gel phantoms were used to assess accuracy. Normal subjects (n = 3) and phantoms across three sites (one academic, two community) were used to assess reproducibility. Test-retest analysis at one site in normal subjects (n = 12) was used to assess repeatability.Field strength/sequence3T Siemens Skyra MRI quantitative DW-MRI and T1 -mapping.AssessmentQuantitative DW-MRI and T1 -mapping parametric maps of phantoms and fibroglandular and adipose tissue of the breast.Statistical testsAverage values of breast tissue were quantified and Bland-Altman analysis was performed to assess the repeatability of the MRI techniques, while the Friedman test assessed reproducibility.ResultsADC measurements were reproducible across sites, with an average difference of 1.6% in an ice-water phantom and 7.0% in breast fibroglandular tissue. T1 measurements in gel phantoms had an average difference of 2.8% across three sites, whereas breast fibroglandular and adipose tissue had 8.4% and 7.5% average differences, respectively. In the repeatability study, we found no bias between first and second scanning sessions (P = 0.1). The difference between repeated measurements was independent of the mean for each MRI metric (P = 0.156, P = 0.862, P = 0.197 for ADC, T1 of fibroglandular tissue, and T1 of adipose tissue, respectively).Data conclusionCommunity radiology practices can perform repeatable, reproducible, and accurate quantitative T1 -mapping and DW-MRI. This has the potential to dramatically expand the number of sites that can participate in multisite clinical trials and increase clinical translation of quantitative MRI techniques for cancer response assessment.Level of evidence1 Technical Efficacy: Stage 2 J.
