Frustrated Lewis pair catalyst realizes efficient green diesel production.

ABSTRACT: Hydrotreating renewable oils over sulfided metal catalysts is commercially applied to produce green diesel, but it requires a continuous sulfur replenishment to maintain catalyst activity, which inevitably results in sulfur contamination and increases production costs. We report a robust P-doped NiAl-oxide catalyst with frustrated Lewis pairs (i.e., P atom bonded with the O atom acts as an electron donor, while the spatially separated Ni atom acts as an electron acceptor) that allows efficient green diesel production without sulfur replenishment. The catalyst runs more than 500 h at a weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 28.3 h^-1 without deactivation (methyl laurate as a model compound), and is able to completely convert a real feedstock of soybean oil to diesel-range hydrocarbons with selectivity >90% during 500 h of operation. This work is expected to open up a new avenue for designing non-sulfur catalysts that can make the green diesel production greener.

Project description:In solution the PCy3/B(C6F5)3 pair is rapidly deactivated by nucleophilic aromatic substitution. In the solid state deactivation is effectively suppressed and the active frustrated phosphane/borane Lewis pair splits dihydrogen or adds to sulfur dioxide. A variety of phosphane/B(C6F5)3 pairs have been used to carry out active FLP reactions in the solid state. The reactions were analyzed by DFT calculations and by solid state NMR spectroscopy. The solid state dihydrogen splitting reaction was also carried out under near to ambient conditions with suspensions of the non-quenched phosphane/borane mixtures in the fluorous liquid perfluoromethylcyclohexane.

Single-Electron Transfer in Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry.

Project description:Frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) are well known for their ability to activate small molecules. Recent reports of radical formation within such systems indicate single-electron transfer (SET) could play an important role in their chemistry. Herein, we investigate radical formation upon reacting FLP systems with dihydrogen, triphenyltin hydride, or tetrachloro-1,4-benzoquinone (TCQ) both experimentally and computationally to determine the nature of the single-electron transfer (SET) events; that is, being direct SET to B(C6 F5 )3 or not. The reactions of H2 and Ph3 SnH with archetypal P/B FLP systems do not proceed via a radical mechanism. In contrast, reaction with TCQ proceeds via SET, which is only feasible by Lewis acid coordination to the substrate. Furthermore, SET from the Lewis base to the Lewis acid-substrate adduct may be prevalent in other reported examples of radical FLP chemistry, which provides important design principles for radical main-group chemistry.

Frustrated Lewis Pair Mediated 1,2-Hydrocarbation of Alkynes.

Project description:Frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry enables a rare example of alkyne 1,2-hydrocarbation with N-methylacridinium salts as the carbon Lewis acid. This 1,2-hydrocarbation process does not proceed through a concerted mechanism as in alkyne syn-hydroboration, or through an intramolecular 1,3-hydride migration as operates in the only other reported alkyne 1,2-hydrocarbation reaction. Instead, in this study, alkyne 1,2-hydrocarbation proceeds by a novel mechanism involving alkyne dehydrocarbation with a carbon Lewis acid based FLP to form the new C-C bond. Subsequently, intermolecular hydride transfer occurs, with the Lewis acid component of the FLP acting as a hydride shuttle that enables alkyne 1,2-hydrocarbation.

Contrasting Frustrated Lewis Pair Reactivity with Selenium- and Boron-Based Lewis Acids.

Project description:The activation of π-bonds in diynyl esters has been investigated by using soft and hard Lewis acids. In the case of the soft selenium Lewis acid PhSeCl, sequential activation of the alkyne bonds leads initially to an isocoumarin (1 equiv PhSeCl) and then to a tetracyclic conjugated structure with the isocoumarin subunit fused to a benzoselenopyran (3 equiv PhSeCl). Conversely, the reaction with the hard Lewis acidic borane B(C6 F5 )3 initiates a cascade reaction to yield a complex π-conjugated system containing phthalide and indene subunits.

Cyclic Ether Triggers for Polymeric Frustrated Lewis Pair Gels.

Project description:Sterically hindered Lewis acid and base centers are unable to form Lewis adducts, instead forming frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs), where latent reactivity can be utilized for the activation of small molecules. Applying FLP chemistry into polymeric frameworks transforms this chemistry into responsive and functional materials. Here, we report a versatile synthesis strategy for the preparation of macromolecular FLPs and explore its potential with the ring-opening reactions of cyclic ethers. Addition of the cyclic substrates triggered polymer network formation, where the extent of cross-linking, strength of network, and reactivity are tuned by the steric and electronic properties of the ethers. The resultant networks behave like covalently cross-linked polymers, demonstrating the versatility of FLPs to simultaneously tune both small-molecule capture and mechanical properties of materials.

A geminal antimony(iii)/phosphorus(iii) frustrated Lewis pair.

Project description:The geminal Lewis pair (F5C2)2SbCH2P(tBu)2 (1) was prepared by reacting (F5C2)2SbCl with LiCH2P(tBu)2. Despite its extremely electronegative pentafluoroethyl substituents, the neutral 1 exhibits a relatively soft acidic antimony function according to the HSAB concept (hard-soft acid-base). These properties lead to a reversibility in the binding of CS2 to 1, as observed by VT-NMR spectroscopy, while no reaction with CO2 is observed. The reaction behaviour towards heterocumulenes and the specific interaction situation in the CS2 adduct were analysed by quantum chemical calculations. The FLP-type reactivity of 1 has also been demonstrated by reaction with a variety of small molecules (SO2, PhNCO, PhNCS, (MePh2P)AuCl). The reactions of 1 with PhNCO and PhNCS led to different types of cyclic addition products: PhNCO adds with its N[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond and PhNCS adds preferentially with its C[double bond, length as m-dash]S bond. The reaction of 1 with (MePh2P)AuCl gave an adduct {[(F5C2)2SbCH2(tBu)2P]2Au}+ with a clamp-like structure binding a chloride anion by its two antimony atoms in chelate mode. Compound 1 and its adducts have been characterised by X-ray diffraction experiments, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and computational calculations (DFT, QTAIM, IQA).

New Insights in Frustrated Lewis Pair Chemistry with Azides.

Project description:The geminal frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) tBu2 PCH2 BPh2 (1) reacts with phenyl-, mesityl-, and tert-butyl azide affording, respectively, six, five, and four-membered rings as isolable products. DFT calculations revealed that the formation of all products proceeds via the six-membered ring structure, which is thermally stable with an N-phenyl group, but rearranges when sterically more encumbered Mes-N3 and tBu-N3 are used. The reaction of 1 with Me3 Si-N3 is believed to follow the same course, yet subsequent N2 elimination occurs to afford a four-membered heterocycle (5), which can be considered as a formal FLP-trimethylsilylnitrene adduct. Compound 5 reacts with hydrochloric acid or tetramethylammonium fluoride and showed frustrated Lewis pair reactivity towards phenylisocyanate.

A Phosphanyl-Phosphagallene that Functions as a Frustrated Lewis Pair.

Project description:Phosphagallenes (1 a/1 b) featuring double bonds between phosphorus and gallium were synthesized by reaction of (phosphanyl)phosphaketenes with the gallium carbenoid Ga(Nacnac) (Nacnac=HC[C(Me)N(2,6-i-Pr2 C6 H3 )]2 ). The stability of these species is dependent on the saturation of the phosphanyl moiety. 1 a, which bears an unsaturated phosphanyl ring, rearranges in solution to yield a spirocyclic compound (2) which contains a P=P bond. The saturated variant 1 b is stable even at elevated temperatures. 1 b behaves as a frustrated Lewis pair capable of activation of H2 and forms a 1:1 adduct with CO2 .

Facile Protocol for Water-Tolerant "Frustrated Lewis Pair"-Catalyzed Hydrogenation.

Project description:Despite rapid advances in the field of metal-free, "frustrated Lewis pair" (FLP)-catalyzed hydrogenation, the need for strictly anhydrous reaction conditions has hampered wide-scale uptake of this methodology. Herein, we report that, despite the generally perceived moisture sensitivity of FLPs, 1,4-dioxane solutions of B(C6F5)3 actually show appreciable moisture tolerance and can catalyze hydrogenation of a range of weakly basic substrates without the need for rigorously inert conditions. In particular, reactions can be performed directly in commercially available nonanhydrous solvents without subsequent drying or use of internal desiccants.
