Project description:MXenes, such as Ti3C2Tx, are promising materials for electrodes of supercapacitors (SCs). Colloidal techniques have potential for the fabrication of advanced Ti3C2Tx composites with high areal capacitance (CS). This paper reports the fabrication of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-multiwalled carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes, which show CS of 5.52 F cm-2 in the negative potential range in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Good capacitive performance is achieved at a mass loading of 35 mg cm-2 due to the use of Celestine blue (CB) as a co-dispersant for individual materials. The mechanisms of CB adsorption on Ti3C2TX, Fe3O4, and CNTs and their electrostatic co-dispersion are discussed. The comparison of the capacitive behavior of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-CNT electrodes with Ti3C2TX-CNT and Fe3O4-CNT electrodes for the same active mass, electrode thickness and CNT content reveals a synergistic effect of the individual capacitive materials, which is observed due to the use of CB. The high CS of Ti3C2TX-Fe3O4-CNT composites makes them promising materials for application in negative electrodes of asymmetric SC devices.

Project description:Nanostructured carbon-based materials, such as nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube arrays, Co3O4/nitrogen-doped graphene hybrids and carbon nanotube-graphene complexes have shown respectable oxygen reduction reaction activity in alkaline media. Although certainly promising, the performance of these materials does not yet warrant implementation in the energy conversion/storage devices utilizing basic electrolytes, for example, alkaline fuel cells, metal-air batteries and certain electrolysers. Here we demonstrate a new type of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube/nanoparticle composite oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalyst obtained from iron acetate as an iron precursor and from cyanamide as a nitrogen and carbon nanotube precursor in a simple, scalable and single-step method. The composite has the highest oxygen reduction reaction activity in alkaline media of any non-precious metal catalysts. When used at a sufficiently high loading, this catalyst also outperforms the most active platinum-based catalysts.

Project description:Sodium metal, with a high theoretical specific capacity of 1165 mAh g-1 , is the ultimate anode for sodium batteries, yet how to deal with the inhomogeneous and dendritic sodium deposition and the infinite relative dimension change of sodium metal anodes during sodium depositing/stripping is still challenging. Here, a facile fabricated sodiuphilic 2D N-doped carbon nanosheets (N-CSs) are proposed as sodium host material for sodium metal batteries (SMBs) to prevent dendrite formation and eliminate volume change during cycling. Revealing from combined in situ characterization analyses and theoretical simulations, the high nitrogen content and porous nanoscale interlayer gaps of the 2D N-CSs can not only concede dendrite-free sodium stripping/depositing but also accommodate the infinite relative dimension change. Furthermore, N-CSs can be easily process into N-CSs/Cu electrode via traditional commercial battery electrode coating equipment that pave the way for large-scale industrial applications. On account of the abundant nucleation sites and sufficient deposition space, N-CSs/Cu electrodes demonstrate a superior cycle stability of more than 1500 h at a current density of 2 mA cm-2 with a high coulomb efficiency of more than 99.9% and ultralow nucleation overpotential, which enable reversible and dendrites-free SMBs and shed light on further development of SMBs with even higher performance.

Project description:Improving the accessibility of ions in the electrodes of electrochemical energy storage devices is vital for charge storage and rate performance. In particular, the kinetics of ion transport in organic electrolytes is slow, especially at low operating temperatures. Herein, we report a new type of MXene-carbon nanotube (CNT) composite electrode that maximizes ion accessibility resulting in exceptional rate performance at low temperatures. The improved ion transport at low temperatures is made possible by breaking the conventional horizontal alignment of the two-dimensional layers of the MXene Ti3C2 by using specially designed knotted CNTs. The large, knot-like structures in the knotted CNTs prevent the usual restacking of the Ti3C2 flakes and create fast ion transport pathways. The MXene-knotted CNT composite electrodes achieve high capacitance (up to 130 F g-1 (276 F cm-3)) in organic electrolytes with high capacitance retention over a wide scan rate range of 10 mV s-1 to 10 V s-1. This study is also the first report utilizing MXene-based supercapacitors at low temperatures (down to -60 °C).

Project description:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have drawn great attention as promising candidates for realizing next-generation printed thermoelectrics (TEs). However, the dispersion instability and resulting poor printability of CNTs have been major issues for their practical processing and device applications. In this work, we investigated the TE characteristics of water-processable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and single-walled CNT (SWCNT) composite. The microscopic analyses indicated that the CMC-incorporated SWCNT dispersions produced uniform and smooth TE films, capable of ensuring reliable TE performance. The resulting composite films provided a low temperature power factor of 73 μW m-1 K-2 with a high electrical conductivity of ≈1600 S cm-1 and a Seebeck coefficient of ≈21 µV K-1. Moreover, the composite films possessed low thermal conductivity of ≈25 W m-1 K-1, significantly lower than that of pure SWCNTs, with a maximum figure of merit of 1.54 × 10-3 at 353.15 K. Finally, we successfully demonstrated water-processed organic TEGs using CMC/SWCNT films as a p-type component. This work could offer valuable insights to support the development of printable organic-based TE materials and devices.

Project description:Lithium (Li) metal is regarded as a next-generation anode material owing to its high energy density. However, issues such as dendritic growth and volume changes during charging and discharging pose significant challenges for commercialization. We propose using lithiophilic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and carbonized zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (C-ZIF-8) composites as host materials for Li to address these problems. The rGO/C-ZIF-8 composites are synthesized through a simple redox reaction followed by carbonization and are characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The roles of chemical composition, characteristics, and morphology are demonstrated. As a result of these favorable structural and functional properties, the Li symmetric cell with rGO/C-ZIF-8 exhibits a stable voltage profile for more than 100 h at 1 mA cm-2 without short-circuiting. A relatively low Li plating/stripping overpotential of ~101.5 mV at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2 is confirmed. Moreover, a rGO/C-ZIF-8-Li full cell paired with a LiFePO4 cathode demonstrates good cyclability and rate capability.

Project description:Carbon nanotubes exhibit mechanical properties ideally suited for reinforced structural composites and surface area and conductivity attractive for electrochemical capacitors. Here we demonstrate the multifunctional synergy between these properties in a composite material exhibiting simultaneous mechanical and energy storage properties. This involves a reinforcing electrode developed using dense, aligned carbon nanotubes grown on stainless steel mesh that is layered in an ion conducting epoxy electrolyte matrix with Kevlar or fiberglass mats. The resulting energy storage composites exhibit elastic modulus over 5 GPa, mechanical strength greater than 85 MPa, and energy density up to 3 mWh/kg for the total combined system including electrodes, current collector, Kevlar or fiberglass, and electrolyte matrix. Furthermore, findings from in-situ mechano-electro-chemical tests indicate simultaneous mechanical and electrochemical functionality with invariant and stable supercapacitor performance maintained throughout the elastic regime.

Project description:Stress-relieving and electrically conductive single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) and conjugated polymer, poly[3-(potassium-4-butanoate)thiophene] (PPBT), wrapped silicon microparticles (Si MPs) have been developed as a composite active material to overcome technical challenges such as intrinsically low electrical conductivity, low initial Coulombic efficiency, and stress-induced fracture due to severe volume changes of Si-based anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The PPBT/SWNT protective layer surrounding the surface of the microparticles physically limits volume changes and inhibits continuous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer formation that leads to severe pulverization and capacity loss during cycling, thereby maintaining electrode integrity. PPBT/SWNT-coated Si MP anodes exhibited high initial Coulombic efficiency (85%) and stable capacity retention (0.027% decay per cycle) with a reversible capacity of 1894 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at a current density of 2 A g-1, 3.3 times higher than pristine Si MP anodes. The stress relaxation and underlying mechanism associated with the incorporation of the PPBT/SWNT layer were interpreted by quasi-deterministic and quantitative stress analyses of SWNTs through in situ Raman spectroscopy. PPBT/SWNT@Si MP anodes can maintain reversible stress recovery and 45% less variation in tensile stress compared with SWNT@Si MP anodes during cycling. The results verify the benefits of stress relaxation via a protective capping layer and present an efficient strategy to achieve long cycle life for Si-based anodes for next-generation LIBs.

Project description:In this study, we propose to neutralize the relaxation deformation of Nafion-ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) by slow anode deformation of Flemion-IPMC caused by carboxyl groups (-COOH). Carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CCNT) as -COOH carriers were doped into a Nafion matrix. By adjusting the doping content from 0 wt% to 10 wt%, an IPMC with constant steady-state deformation has been achieved at a critical CCNT content of 2 wt%. Moreover, the increasing rate of the slow anode deformation with the CCNT content is tunable, which is found to be 2.26 mm s-1 %-1.

Project description:Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have attracted great attention for scalable electrical energy storage considering the abundance and wide availability of Na resources. However, it remains elusive whether carbon anodes can achieve the similar scale of successes in Na-ion batteries as in Li-ion batteries. Currently, much attention is focused on hard carbon while soft carbon is generally considered a poor choice. In this study, we discover that soft carbon can be a high-rate anode in NIBs if the preparation conditions are carefully chosen. Furthermore, we discover that the turbostratic lattice of soft carbon is electrochemically expandable, where d-spacing rises from 3.6 to 4.2 Å. Such a scale of lattice expansion only due to the Na-ion insertion was not known for carbon materials. It is further learned that portions of such lattice expansion are highly reversible, resulting in excellent cycling performance. Moreover, soft carbon delivers a good capacity at potentials above 0.2 V, which enables an intrinsically dendrite-free anode for NIBs.
