Judo for older adults: the coaches' knowledge and needs of education.

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to explore the views of judo coaches on their perceived knowledge (PK) and needs for education (NE) for training older practitioners. In total, 470 international (Europe = 48%, Americas = 22%, Africa = 23%, Asia = 5% and Oceania = 2%) judo coaches (IJF: level 1 = 55,3%, level 2 = 33%; judo black belt: 3,4 ± 1,7 dan; F = 15%; university education: 68% >BA) responded an online survey encompassing demographic information and 35 items relevant to training older adults (Aging process; Safety and First Aid; Organization & Environment; Physiology and Fitness; Psychology & Mental Health; Teaching & Training) to be rated on a 7-point Likert scale for PK and NE. Non parametric statistics (p > 0.05) was applied to ascertain differences and relationships between PK and NE, respectively. A bivariate go-zone plot was used to highlight items with the lowest PK and the highest NE mean values. The coaches reported high PK (4.5 ± 0.3 pt) and NE (4.7 ± 0.1 pt) values, with significant higher PK values emerging for high education levels and judo experience. In considering their unique needs and special role, the judo coaches presented valuable insights to develop a sustainable educational curriculum tailored to train older judo practitioners.

Project description:BackgroundThe global population is ageing rapidly and there is a need for strategies to promote health and wellbeing among older adults. Nutrition knowledge is a key predictor of dietary intake; therefore, effective educational programmes are urgently required to rectify poor dietary patterns. Digital health technologies provide a viable option for delivering nutrition education that is cost-effective and widely accessible. However, few technologies have been developed to meet the unique needs and preferences of older adults.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to explore technology use among older adults and qualitatively determine the content needs and design preferences for an online nutrition education resource tailored to older adult consumers in Australia.MethodsTwenty adult participants aged 55 years and older (95% female) participated in one of four 2-h participatory design workshops. In each workshop, prompted discussion questions were used to explore participants' technology use and preferences and to explore content needs and design preferences for an online nutrition education resource specific to older adults.ResultsAll participants were regularly using a range of different devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets and computers) and reported being comfortable doing so. Participants wanted a website that provided general nutrition information, practical advice and recipes. To enhance engagement, they sought a personalised resource that could be adjusted to suit their needs, included up-to-date information and allowed for easy sharing with others by exporting information as a PDF.ConclusionsParticipatory design methods generate new knowledge for designing and tailoring digital health technologies to be appropriate and useful for the target audience. Specifically, older adults seek an online resource that has large and simple fonts with clear categories, providing them with practical advice and general nutrition information that can be personalised to suit their own needs and health concerns, with the option to export and print information into a paper-based format.Patient or public contributionOlder adults actively participated in the development and evaluation process to generate ideas about potential features, functionalities, uses and practicalities of an online nutrition education resource.

Project description:ContextA growing number of high-school-aged athletes participate on club sport teams. Some, but not all, state concussion laws apply to both interscholastic and private sport organizations. However, concussion education, management plans, and knowledge have not been examined in club coaches who coach high school-aged athletes.ObjectiveTo determine if differences in concussion education, management plans, and knowledge exist between high school coaches and coaches of club sport teams.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingOnline survey.Patients or other participantsA total of 769 coaches (497 high school coaches, 272 club coaches coaching high school-aged athletes; 266 women [34.6%], 503 men [65.4%]) completed an anonymous online questionnaire.Main outcome measure(s)The questionnaire consisted of demographic and team information, requirements for concussion-education and -management plans, and concussion knowledge.ResultsHigh school coaches were more likely than club coaches to report that their organizing bodies or leagues required them to receive concussion-education information (97.4% versus 80.4%; P < .001) and that their organizing bodies or leagues had a concussion-management plan (94.0% versus 70.2%; P < .001). High school coaches were more likely than club coaches to correctly agree that most concussions resolve in 7 to 10 days (48.6% versus 40.1%; P = .02) and disagree that loss of consciousness is required to diagnose a concussion (87.1% versus 80.9%; P = .02).ConclusionsClub coaches were less likely to be aware of requirements for concussion-education and -management plans from their parent organizations and scored lower on specific concussion-knowledge questions than high school coaches despite the same education requirements across groups under their state concussion laws. These results raise concerns regarding the proper management of concussions in club sports and suggest a need for greater oversight and enforcement of state laws in the club sport setting.

Project description:Rationale & objectiveAttention to geriatric impairments is not routinely provided to older adults receiving dialysis. Our objective was to identify patient and personnel perspectives on experiences with geriatric problems, unmet needs that may affect a patient's ability to maintain his or her functional status, and preferences for design of a geriatric model of care tailored to address the unmet needs.Study designQualitative study using semi-structured interviews and focus groups.Setting & participants14 hemodialysis patients 55 years and older and 24 dialysis unit personnel (eg, nephrologists, nurses, patient care technicians, and social workers) representing 5 dialysis units.Analytical approachContent analysis to identify themes reflecting unmet needs and design considerations for a geriatric model of care for older adults receiving dialysis.Results4 themes (or unmet needs) identified from both patient and personnel transcripts were: (1) mobility, which referred to the insufficient mobility assessment and transportation services; (2) medications, which referred to insufficient attention to appropriate prescribing and medication self-management; (3) social support, which referred to insufficient support for activities of daily living and emotional problems; and (4) communication, which referred to insufficient patient-provider and interprofessional communication, including data transfer across separate health systems. Although participants generally acknowledged that an integrated model of care could result in benefits across all 4 areas of unmet need, they noted that the program design would need to minimize disruption of current workflow and practices in dialysis units.LimitationsThe findings may not be broadly representative of all older adults receiving dialysis and dialysis unit personnel.ConclusionsThere is insufficient attention to mobility, medication management, social support, and communication needs for older adults receiving in-center hemodialysis. Addressing these unmet needs in a geriatric model of care and measuring its effectiveness are areas of future research.
