Fathers Nutrition Knowledge and Child Feeding Practices Associated with Childhood Overweight and Obesity: A Scoping Review of Literature From 2000 to 2023.

ABSTRACT: Objective. Childhood overweight/obesity is a serious global public health issue, demanding parental involvement to reverse trends. Despite fathers' crucial parenting roles, research on fathers and childhood overweight/obesity is limited. This scoping review examines the literature on fathers' nutrition knowledge and feeding practices with childhood overweight/obesity. Methods. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, and Arksey and O'Malley (2005) framework, multiple databases were searched. Eligible father-child related studies focused on fathers' nutrition knowledge, feeding practices, and childhood overweight/obesity. Results. Of 26 eligible articles, 52% originated from the United States, and 44% focused on father-child dyads. Most studies were cross-sectional (64%) and survey-based (68%). Further, 11.5% assessed fathers' nutrition knowledge, and child feeding practices (53.4%). Conclusion. Literature on fathers' nutrition knowledge and feeding practices concerning childhood overweight/obesity is limited. Scaling-up fathers' inclusion in childhood nutrition research is encouraged for the design of holistic interventions.

Project description:BackgroundComplementary feeding is critical for optimal nutrition in infants and young children as it ensures their growth, health and development to attain their full potential. However, evidence shows that children from developing countries do not meet the core indicators for appropriate complementary feeding. We evaluated mothers' knowledge and attitudes regarding child feeding recommendations and the determinants of adequate diet among children aged 6-23 months.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 200 children aged 6-23 months and their mothers/care givers recruited during child welfare clinics of two health facilities in Ghana. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess determinants of adequate diet.ResultsSixty-eight percent of the mothers knew the recommended duration of continued breastfeeding, 56.5% how to ensure dietary diversity and enrich their children's diets and 94% (n = 188) had positive attitude towards recommended infant and young child feeding practices. Majority of the mothers (92%, n = 183) practiced continued breastfeeding, 10.5% of the children met minimum diet diversity score, 39.5% minimum meal frequency and 8.5% received minimum adequate diet. Determinants of receipt of minimum adequate diet were: having high knowledge in child feeding recommendations (100% vs. 0.0, p < 0.001) and child's father reportedly earning adequate income to cater for the family (AOR = 12.1 (1.32-109.72, p = 0.027).ConclusionMotherss knowledge levels regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations had notable deficiencies although they generally had a positive attitude towards child feeding recommendations. Knowledge regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations as well as the child's father having adequate income were important determinants of adequate diet. Nutrition education should emphasize on improving mothers' nutrition knowledge regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations and supporting mothers to overcome barriers to feed their children with adequate diets.

Project description:BackgroundTreating children's eyes is not just a privilege for a child, it is an essential requirement for their visual health. Parents, as caregivers, have a paramount responsibility to make decisions regarding their children's eye health. Thus, this review aims to identify and summarise published information about parents' knowledge and practices on children's eye health care.MethodsRelevant articles searches were performed through a systematic search of databases (EBSCOhost, PubMed, and Scopus) using the keywords 'knowledge', 'practice', 'parent', 'eye', 'problem', and 'children'. This review was conducted and reported in line with the PRISMA-ScR. The methodological quality of the listed studies was assessed using A Modified McMaster Critical Review form based on the total score.ResultFrom a total of 235 studies retrieved through literature review and pearling, 219 remained after removing duplicates. After screening titles and abstracts, 204 irrelevant studies were excluded, leaving 15. After a detailed full-text review, four studies were excluded due to not meeting inclusion criteria. Thus, this review includes the remaining 11 studies. All eleven studies (n = 11) show that parents's knowledge and practices vary. Some parents display good knowledge regarding children's eye health care, for example, understanding the importance of wearing spectacles, the significance of children having normal vision, and where to seek eye examinations. Five studies (n = 5) showed that parents have good practices such as consulting doctors and seeking eye examinations and treatment at the hospital. Six studies (n = 6) showed that parents have misconceptions regarding knowledge, practices, and treatment of children's eye health.ConclusionThis scoping review found that parents' knowledge and practices regarding children's eye health are poor. Parents' perceptions and practices about the cause and treatment of eye problems were tainted with misconceptions. Therefore, implementing structured programs to enhance awareness and promote the adoption of healthy practices for children's eye health is required.

Project description:Breastfeeding is important for women and children's health, but less than half of infants worldwide begin life with optimal breastfeeding. A growing literature shows consistently large economic costs of not breastfeeding, with global studies showing economic losses of around US$300 billion globally. However, existing studies are highly diverse in approaches, methods, data sources and country results. Building on a landmark 2012 UNICEF UK review focused on high-income countries, we conducted a scoping review to map and characterize the expanding literature and identify future research directions in this research area. We included studies (n = 36) in diverse country settings and outcomes for women and children. We used PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, MEDLINE, ProQuest and manual searches of cost of not breastfeeding studies published between 1996 and 2023. Articles were excluded if they were macroeconomic evaluations, did not assign monetary values or only evaluated breastfeeding or formula feeding costs and not outcomes or were cost of programs studies. We found considerable diversity in disciplinary approaches and differences in methodologies. Though there were different cost measurement perspectives (societal, institutional/payer and individual), all but two excluded the costs of unpaid care. Studies typically measured costs of medical treatment, with more recent studies using dynamic simulation models. The largest economic costs were derived from lifetime estimates of human capital losses, namely cost of premature death and loss of intelligence quotient points. Medical and death costs varied widely depending on method of calculation, but total costs consistently exceeded $US100 billion annually for the USA, and around $US300 billion in global studies. Our findings suggest that greater interdisciplinary collaboration is needed particularly to better define infant feeding exposures, and advance comprehensive measurement of costs and outcomes across lifetimes, in order to prioritize breastfeeding as a public health strategy of economic importance.
