Project description:In this study, multifunctional Fresnel lenses were explored as a potential solution for correcting vision in patients with color vision deficiency (CVD) and high myopia. Current studies have primarily focused on color vision correction through the 3D printing of glasses and contact lenses. However, the potential of 3D-printed multifunctional devices, such as Fresnel lenses, goes beyond addressing a single vision correction issue. For this study, computer-aided design (CAD) model of Fresnel lens with high diopter based on constant height configuration was developed. The CAD model was successfully fabricated using vat photopolymerization 3D printer, employing laboratory-prepared transparent HEMA resin. The resin was modified with two Atto dyes (565 nm and 488 nm), known for their ability to filter out problematic wavelengths (400-500 nm and 540-580 nm) to address color vision deficiency. The printed lenses were characterized by their chemical, physical, and optical properties using various characterization techniques. The focusing performance was evaluated using focal length measurements, and the results obtained were less than 2 mm deviation from the design value, having the potential to assist in higher myopic vision correction. The resulting optical spectra were compared with commercial glasses, revealing close agreement for CVD correction. These results expand the potential applications of multifunctional Fresnel lenses in ophthalmology, demonstrating their effectiveness as vision-correcting lenses and imaging systems.
Project description:Vat photopolymerization additive manufacturing (Vat AM) technologies have found niche industrial use being able to produce personalized parts in moderate quantity. However, Vat AM lacks in its ability to produce parts of satisfactory thermal and mechanical properties for structural applications. The purpose of this investigation was to develop high-performance resins with glass transition temperatures (Tg) above 200 °C for Vat AM, evaluate the properties of the produced thermosets and establish a structure-property relationship of the thermosets produced. Herein, we have developed SLA-type resins that feature bio-derived monomer hesperetin trimethacrylate (HTM) synthesized from the flavonone hesperetin. Diluents 4-acryloyl morpholine, styrene, 4-methyl styrene and 4-tert butylstyrene (tbutylsty) were photocured with HTM as the monomer and all produced thermosets with Tg values above 200 °C. Investigations of suitable crosslinkers urethane dimethacrylate, the vinyl ester CN 151 and Ebecryl 4859 (Eb4859) showed that each crosslinker displayed different benefits when formulated with HTM as the monomer and tbutylSty as the diluent (HTM:crosslinker:tbutylSty with mass ratio 2:1:2). The crosslinker CN 151 produced the thermoset of greatest onset of thermal decomposition temperature (T0) of 352 °C. Eb4859 produced the thermoset of highest tensile strength, 19 ± 7 MPa, amongst the set of varied crosslinkers. The formulation featuring UDM (HTM:UDM:tbutysty) offered ease of processing and was seemingly the easiest to print. Investigations of reactive diluent showed that styrene produced the thermoset of the highest extent of cure and the overall highest tensile strength, 25 ± 5 MPa, while tbutylSty produced the thermoset with the greatest Tan-δ Tg, 231 °C. HTM was synthesized, formulated with diluents, crosslinkers and initiators. The HTM resins were then 3D printed to produce thermosets of Tg values greater than 200 °C. The polymer properties were evaluated and a structure-reactivity relationship was discussed.
Project description:While vat photopolymerization has many advantages over soft lithography in fabricating microfluidic devices, including efficiency and shape complexity, it has difficulty achieving well-controlled micrometer-sized (smaller than 100 μm) channels in the layer building direction. The considerable light penetration depth of transparent resin leads to over-curing that inevitably cures the residual resin inside flow channels, causing clogs. In this paper, a 3D printing process - in-situ transfer vat photopolymerization is reported to solve this critical over-curing issue in fabricating microfluidic devices. We demonstrate microchannels with high Z-resolution (within 10 μm level) and high accuracy (within 2 μm level) using a general method with no requirements on liquid resins such as reduced transparency nor leads to a reduced fabrication speed. Compared with all other vat photopolymerization-based techniques specialized for microfluidic channel fabrication, our universal approach is compatible with commonly used 405 nm light sources and commercial photocurable resins. The process has been verified by multifunctional devices, including 3D serpentine microfluidic channels, microfluidic valves, and particle sorting devices. This work solves a critical barrier in 3D printing microfluidic channels using the high-speed vat photopolymerization process and broadens the material options. It also significantly advances vat photopolymerization's use in applications requiring small gaps with high accuracy in the Z-direction.
Project description:Vat photopolymerization typically prints highly crosslinked networks. Printing hydrogels, which are also networks but with a high swelling capacity in water and therefore with low crosslinking density, is a challenge for this technique. However, it may be of interest in medicine and in other areas, since it would allow for the preparation of this type of 3D-shaped material. In this work, an approach for printing hydrogels via vat photopolymerization that uses a mixture of stable and hydrolysable crosslinkers has been evaluated so that an initial highly crosslinked network can be printed, although after hydrolysis it becomes a network with low crosslinking. This approach has been studied with PEO/PEG-related formulations, that is, with a PEG-dimethacrylate as a stable crosslinker, a PEO-related derivative carrying β-aminoesters as a degradable crosslinker, and PEG-methyl ether acrylate and hydroxyethyl acrylate as monofunctional monomers. A wide family of formulations has been studied, maintaining the weight percentage of the crosslinkers at 15%. Resins have been studied in terms of viscosity, and the printing process has been evaluated through the generation of Jacobs working curves. It has been shown that this approach allows for the printing of pieces of different shapes and sizes via vat photopolymerization, and that these pieces can re-ajust their water content in a tailored fashion through treatments in different media (PBS or pH 10 buffer).
Project description:UV-curable polyurethane dispersions (UV-PUDs) have applications in coatings for a variety of materials. Historically, the neutralization and dispersion steps of the UV-PUD production process have been performed in batch. However, continuous processing might reduce capital and operating costs, improve the dispersion characteristics, and facilitate scale-up. Static mixers and inline high-shear mixers are able to provide the necessary shear forces to obtain miniemulsions. The production of a UV-PUD is therefore studied in a continuous setup, whereby the neutralization step is performed in static mixers and the dispersion step is performed either in static mixers or in a high-shear mixer. The influence of the prepolymer temperature, mixing energy, and feed flow rate on the particle size and stability of the UV-PUD particles in water is explored. The results show that the neutralization step is mixing-sensitive, and the temperature of the neutralized prepolymer influences the particle size in the dispersion process. The amount of shear force applied during the dispersion step has a limited effect on the particle size. UV-PU dispersions with an average particle size below 80 nm and PDI below 0.1 are obtained with static mixers or in an inline rotor-stator mixer, at flow rates of 5.2 and 7.2 L/h, respectively. This research demonstrates that continuous processing using static mixers and high-shear mixing is a viable option for the neutralization and dispersion of UV-PUDs.
Project description:The working curve informs resin properties and print parameters for stereolithography, digital light processing, and other photopolymer additive manufacturing (PAM) technologies. First demonstrated in 1992, the working curve measurement of cure depth vs radiant exposure of light is now a foundational measurement in the field of PAM. Despite its widespread use in industry and academia, there is no formal method or procedure for performing the working curve measurement, raising questions about the utility of reported working curve parameters. Here, an interlaboratory study (ILS) is described in which 24 individual laboratories performed a working curve measurement on an aliquot from a single batch of PAM resin. The ILS reveals that there is enormous scatter in the working curve data and the key fit parameters derived from it. The measured depth of light penetration Dp varied by as much as 7x between participants, while the critical radiant exposure for gelation Ec varied by as much as 70x. This significant scatter is attributed to a lack of common procedure, variation in light engines, epistemic uncertainties from the Jacobs equation, and the use of measurement tools with insufficient precision. The ILS findings highlight an urgent need for procedural standardization and better hardware characterization in this rapidly growing field.
Project description:The material properties and processing of investment casting patterns manufactured using conventional wax injection Molding and those manufactured by vat photopolymerization can be substantially different in terms of thermal expansion and mechanical properties, which can generate problems with dimensional accuracy and stability before and during ceramic shelling and shell failures during the burn-out of the 3D printed casting patterns. In this paper and for the first time, the monofunctional Acryloyl morpholine monomer was used for 3D printing of casting patterns, due to its thermoplastic-like behavior, e.g., softening by heat. However, the hydrophilic behavior of this polymer led to an incorporation of up to 60 wt% of Hexanediol diacrylate, to control the water absorption of the network, which to some extent, compromised the softening feature of Acryloyl morpholine. Addition of a powdered wax filler resulted in a delayed thermal decomposition of the polymer network, however, it helped to reduce the thermal expansion of the parts. The dimensional accuracy and stability of the wax-filled formulation indicated an excellent dimensional tolerance of less than ±130 µm. Finally, the 3D printed patterns successfully went through a burn out process with no damages to the ceramic shell.
Project description:Ultraviolet (UV) exposure overdose can cause health issues such as skin burns or other skin damage. In this work, a UV and temperature sensor smartwatch is developed, utilizing a multimaterial 3D printing approach via a vat photopolymerization-digital light processing technique. Photochromic (PC) pigments with different UV sensitivities, UVA (315-400 nm) and UVB (315-280 nm), were utilized to cover a wider range of UV exposure and were mixed in transparent resin, whereas the smartwatch was printed with controlled thickness gradients. A multifunctional sensor was next fabricated by adding a thermochromic (TC) material to PC, which is capable of sensing UV and temperature change. Colorimetric measurements assisted by a smartphone-based application provided instantaneous as well as cumulative UV exposure from sunlight. The mechanical properties of the device were also measured to determine its durability. The prototype of the wearable watch was prepared by fixing the 3D-printed dial to a commercially available silicon wristband suitable for all age groups. The 3D-printed watch is water-resistant and easily removable, allowing for its utilization in multiple outdoor activities. Thus, the developed wearable UV sensor alerts the user to the extent of their UV exposure, which can help protect them against overexposure.
Project description:Medical 3D printing is a complex, highly interdisciplinary, and revolutionary technology that is positively transforming the care of patients. The technology is being increasingly adopted at the Point of Care (PoC) as a consequence of the strong value offered to medical practitioners. One of the key technologies within the medical 3D printing portfolio enabling this transition is desktop inverted Vat Photopolymerization (VP) owing to its accessibility, high quality, and versatility of materials. Several reports in the peer-reviewed literature have detailed the medical impact of 3D printing technologies as a whole. This review focuses on the multitude of clinical applications of desktop inverted VP 3D printing which have grown substantially in the last decade. The principles, advantages, and challenges of this technology are reviewed from a medical standpoint. This review serves as a primer for the continually growing exciting applications of desktop-inverted VP 3D printing in healthcare.
Project description:Vat photopolymerization (VP), a type of additive manufacturing process that cures resin to build objects, can emit potentially hazardous particles and gases. We evaluated two VP technologies, stereolithography (SLA) and digital light processing (DLP), in three separate environmental chambers to understand task-based impacts on indoor air quality. Airborne particles, total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs), and/or specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored during each task to evaluate their exposure potential. Regardless of duration, all tasks released particles and organic gases, though concentrations varied between SLA and DLP processes and among tasks. Maximum particle concentrations reached 1200 #/cm3 and some aerosols contained potentially hazardous elements such as barium, chromium, and manganese. TVOC concentrations were highest for the isopropyl alcohol (IPA) rinsing, soaking, and drying post-processing tasks (up to 36.8 mg/m3), lowest for the resin pouring pre-printing, printing, and resin recovery post-printing tasks (up to 0.1 mg/m3), and intermediate for the curing post-processing task (up to 3 mg/m3). Individual VOCs included, among others, the potential occupational carcinogen acetaldehyde and the immune sensitizer 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (pouring, printing, recovery, and curing tasks). Careful consideration of all tasks is important for the development of strategies to minimize indoor air pollution and exposure potential from VP processes.
