Anion Exchange Membrane with Pendulous Piperidinium on Twisted All-Carbon Backbone for Fuel Cell.

ABSTRACT: As a central component for anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), the anion exchange membrane is now facing the challenge of further improving its conductivity and alkali stability. Herein, a twisted all-carbon backbone is designed by introducing stereo-contorted units with piperidinium groups dangled at the twisted sites. The rigid and twisted backbone improves the conduction of hydroxide and brings down the squeezing effect of the backbone on piperidine rings. Accordingly, an anion exchange membrane prepared through this method exhibits adapted OH^- conductivity, low swelling ratio and excellent alkali stability, even in high alkali concentrations. Further, a fuel cell assembled with a such-prepared membrane can reach a power density of 904.2 mW/cm² and be capable of continuous operation for over 50 h. These results demonstrate that the designed membrane has good potential for applications in AEMFCs.

Branched Poly(Aryl Piperidinium) Membranes for Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.

Project description:Anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are a promising, next-generation fuel cell technology. AEMFCs require highly conductive and robust anion-exchange membranes (AEMs), which are challenging to develop due to the tradeoff between conductivity and water uptake. Here we report a method to prepare high-molecular-weight branched poly(aryl piperidinium) AEMs. We show that branching reduces water uptake, leading to improved dimensional stability. The optimized membrane, b-PTP-2.5, exhibits simultaneously high OH- conductivity (>145 mS cm-1 at 80 °C), high mechanical strength and dimensional stability, good processability, and excellent alkaline stability (>1500 h) in 1 M KOH at 80 °C. AEMFCs based on b-PTP-2.5 reached peak power densities of 2.3 W cm-2 in H2 -O2 and 1.3 W cm-2 in H2 -air at 80 °C. The AEMFCs can run stably under a constant current of 0.2 A cm-2 over 500 h, during which the b-PTP-2.5 membrane remains stable.

Poly(fluorenyl aryl piperidinium) membranes and ionomers for anion exchange membrane fuel cells.

Project description:Low-cost anion exchange membrane fuel cells have been investigated as a promising alternative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells for the last decade. The major barriers to the viability of anion exchange membrane fuel cells are their unsatisfactory key components-anion exchange ionomers and membranes. Here, we present a series of durable poly(fluorenyl aryl piperidinium) ionomers and membranes where the membranes possess high OH- conductivity of 208 mS cm-1 at 80 °C, low H2 permeability, excellent mechanical properties (84.5 MPa TS), and 2000 h ex-situ durability in 1 M NaOH at 80 °C, while the ionomers have high water vapor permeability and low phenyl adsorption. Based on our rational design of poly(fluorenyl aryl piperidinium) membranes and ionomers, we demonstrate alkaline fuel cell performances of 2.34 W cm-2 in H2-O2 and 1.25 W cm-2 in H2-air (CO2-free) at 80 °C. The present cells can be operated stably under a 0.2 A cm-2 current density for ~200 h.

Crosslinked Pore-Filling Anion Exchange Membrane Using the Cylindrical Centrifugal Force for Anion Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell System.

Project description:In this study, novel crosslinked pore-filling membranes were fabricated by using a centrifugal force from the cylindrical centrifugal machine. For preparing these crosslinked pore-filling membranes, the poly(phenylene oxide) containing long side chains to improve the water management (hydrophilic), porous polyethylene support (hydrophobic) and crosslinker based on the diamine were used. The resulting membranes showed a uniform thickness, flexible and transparent because it is well filled. Among them, PF-XAc-PPO70_25 showed good mechanical properties (56.1 MPa of tensile strength and 781.0 MPa of Young's modulus) and dimensional stability due to the support. In addition, it has a high hydroxide conductivity (87.1 mS/cm at 80 °C) and low area specific resistance (0.040 Ω·cm2), at the same time showing stable alkaline stability. These data outperformed the commercial FAA-3-50 membrane sold by Fumatech in Germany. Based on the optimized properties, membrane electrode assembly using XAc-PPO70_25 revealed excellent cell performance (maximum power density: 239 mW/cm2 at 0.49 V) than those of commercial FAA-3-50 Fumatech anion exchange membrane (maximum power density: 212 mW/cm2 at 0.54 V) under the operating condition of 60 °C and 100% RH as well. It was expected that PF-XAc-PPO70_25 could be an excellent candidate based on the results superior to those of commercial membranes in these essential characteristics of fuel cells.

Are Radicals Formed During Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Operation?

Project description:In this paper we present a study on stable radicals and short-lived species generated in anion-exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells (AEMFCs) during operation. The in situ measurements are performed with a micro-AEMFC inserted into a resonator of an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer, which enables separate monitoring of radicals formed on the anode and cathode sides. The creation of radicals is monitored by the EPR spin trapping technique. For the first time, we clearly show the formation and presence of stable radicals in AEMs during and after long-term AEMFC operation. The main detected adducts during the operation of the micro-AEMFC are DMPO-OOH and DMPO-OH on the cathode side, and DMPO-H on the anode side. These results indicate that oxidative degradation involving radical reactions has to be taken into account when stability of AEMFCs is investigated.

Partially fluorinated copolymers containing pendant piperidinium head groups as anion exchange membranes for alkaline fuel cells.

Project description:A new series of partially fluorinated copolymers with varying alkyl side chain length (C3, C6 and C9) and piperidinium head groups have been synthesized and characterized in detail in an effort to improve membrane properties for alkaline fuel cell applications. The copolymers (QPAF4-Cx-pip) provided thin and bendable membranes by solution casting, and achieved high hydroxide ion conductivity up to 97 mS cm-1 in water at 80 °C. Membrane properties such as water absorbability, conductivity, and mechanical properties were tunable with the side chain length. The copolymer main chain and the piperidinium groups were both alkaline stable and the membranes retained high conductivity in 4 M KOH at 80 °C for as long as 1000 h, however, conductivity was lost in 8 M KOH due to Hofmann degradation of the side chain. QPAF4-C3-pip copolymer with the best-balanced properties as anion exchange membrane functioned well in a hydrogen/oxygen alkaline fuel cell to achieve 226 mW cm-2 peak power density at 502 mA cm-2 current density under fully humidified conditions with no back pressure.

Carbon-Nanowall Microporous Layers for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell.

Project description:The cathode microporous layer (MPL), as one of the key components of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEM-FC), requires specialized carbon materials to ensure the two-phase flow and interfacial effects. In this respect, we designed a novel MPL based on highly hydrophobic carbon nanowalls (CNW). Employing plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition techniques directly on carbon paper, we produced high-quality microporous layers at a competitive yield-to-cost ratio with distinctive MPL properties: high porosity, good stability, considerable durability, high hydrophobicity, and substantial conductivity. The specific morphological and structural properties were determined by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. Thermo-gravimetric analysis was employed to study the nanostructures' thermal stability and contact angle measurements were performed on the CNW substrate to study the hydrophobic character. Platinum ink, serving as a fuel cell catalyst, was sprayed directly onto the MPLs and incorporated in the FC assembly by hot-pressing against a polymeric membrane to form the membrane-electrode assembly and gas diffusion layers. Single-fuel-cell testing, at moderate temperature and humidity, revealed improved power performance comparable to industrial quality membrane assemblies (500 mW cm-2 mg-1 of cathodic Pt load at 80 °C and 80% RH), with elevated working potential (0.99 V) and impeccable fuel crossover for a low-cost system.

Chemically stable piperidinium cations for anion exchange membranes.

Project description:The chemical stability of the anion exchange membranes (AEMs) is determinative towards the engineering applications of anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) and other AEM-based electrochemical devices, yet remains a challenge due to deficiencies in the structural design of cations. In this work, an effective design strategy for ultra-stable piperidinium cations is presented based on the systematic investigation of the chemical stability of piperidinium in harsh alkaline media. Firstly, benzyl-substituted piperidinium was degraded by about 23% in a 7 M KOH solution at 100 °C after 1436 h, which was much more stable than pyrrolidinium due to its lower ring strain. The introduction of substituent effects at the α-C position was proved to be an effective strategy for enhancing the chemical stability of the piperidinium functional group. As a result, the butyl-substituted piperidinium cation showed no obvious structural changes after being treated in the 7 M KOH solution at 100 °C for 1050 h. Afterwards, GC-MS and NMR analysis indicated that the α-C atoms in the substituents of piperidinium are fragile to the nucleophilic attack of OH-. Based on the above results, the electronic and steric effects of different alkyl substitutions were analyzed. This work provides critical insights into the structural design of chemically stable piperidinium functional groups for the AEM and boosts its application in electrochemical devices, such as fuel cells and alkaline water electrolysis.

Poly(meta/para-Terphenylene-Methyl Piperidinium)-Based Anion Exchange Membranes: The Effect of Backbone Structure in AEMFC Application.

Project description:A series of poly(meta/para-terphenylene-methyl piperidinium)-based anion exchange membranes devoid of benzylic sites or aryl ether bonds, that are vulnerable to degradation by hydroxide ions, are synthesized and investigated for their application as novel anion exchange membranes. The copolymers are composed of both linear para-terphenyl units and kink-structured meta-terphenyl units. The meta-connectivity in terphenyl units permits the polymer backbones to fold back, maximizing the interactions among the hydrocarbon polymer chains and enhancing the peripheral formation of ion aggregates, due to the free volume generated by the kink structure. The effects of the copolymer composition between para-terphenyl and meta-terphenyl on the morphology and the electrochemical and physicochemical properties of the corresponding polymer membranes are investigated.

Isoindolinium Groups as Stable Anion Conductors for Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells and Electrolyzers.

Project description:Anion-exchange membrane (AEM) fuel cells (AEMFCs) and water electrolyzers (AEMWEs) have gained strong attention of the scientific community as an alternative to expensive mainstream fuel cell and electrolysis technologies. However, in the high pH environment of the AEMFCs and AEMWEs, especially at low hydration levels, the molecular structure of most anion-conducting polymers breaks down because of the strong reactivity of the hydroxide anions with the quaternary ammonium (QA) cation functional groups that are commonly used in the AEMs and ionomers. Therefore, new highly stable QAs are needed to withstand the strong alkaline environment of these electrochemical devices. In this study, a series of isoindolinium salts with different substituents is prepared and investigated for their stability under dry alkaline conditions. We show that by modifying isoindolinium salts, steric effects could be added to change the degradation kinetics and impart significant improvement in the alkaline stability, reaching an order of magnitude improvement when all the aromatic positions are substituted. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are provided in support of the high kinetic stability found in these substituted isoindolinium salts. This is the first time that this class of QAs has been investigated. We believe that these novel isoindolinium groups can be a good alternative in the chemical design of AEMs to overcome material stability challenges in advanced electrochemical systems.

Transition-Metal- and Nitrogen-Doped Carbide-Derived Carbon/Carbon Nanotube Composites as Cathode Catalysts for Anion-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells.

Project description:Transition-metal- and nitrogen-codoped carbide-derived carbon/carbon nanotube composites (M-N-CDC/CNT) have been prepared, characterized, and used as cathode catalysts in anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs). As transition metals, cobalt, iron, and a combination of both have been investigated. Metal and nitrogen are doped through a simple high-temperature pyrolysis technique with 1,10-phenanthroline as the N precursor. The physicochemical characterization shows the success of metal and nitrogen doping as well as very similar morphologies and textural properties of all three composite materials. The initial assessment of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity, employing the rotating ring-disk electrode method, indicates that the M-N-CDC/CNT catalysts exhibit a very good electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media. We find that the formation of HO2 - species in the ORR catalysts depends on the specific metal composition (Co, Fe, or CoFe). All three materials show excellent stability with a negligible decline in their performance after 10000 consecutive potential cycles. The very good performance of the M-N-CDC/CNT catalyst materials is attributed to the presence of M-N x and pyridinic-N moieties as well as both micro- and mesoporous structures. Finally, the catalysts exhibit excellent performance in in situ tests in H2/O2 AEMFCs, with the CoFe-N-CDC/CNT reaching a current density close to 500 mA cm-2 at 0.75 V and a peak power density (P max) exceeding 1 W cm-2. Additional tests show that P max reaches 0.8 W cm-2 in an H2/CO2-free air system and that the CoFe-N-CDC/CNT material exhibits good stability under both AEMFC operating conditions.
