Bioimpedance analysis for identifying new indicators of exercise-induced muscle damage.

ABSTRACT: A noninvasive, immediate, and convenient method for assessing muscle tissue status during exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) has not been established. This study was designed to assess and determine parameters suitable for measuring EIMD after eccentric exercise, using multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis (BIA). Thirty-five young male participants performed dumbbell exercises with their left arm, and their BIA parameters were measured at various time points up to 168 h post exercise using a multi-frequency BIA device. At all-time points, intra and extracellular water content was greater in the left arm than in the right arm, whereas the impedance, reactance, resistance, and phase angle were lower in the left arm than in the right arm. Established EIMD indices, such as maximal isometric voluntary contraction, were measured and used in correlational analyses. Only reactance was correlated with biomarkers, indicating muscle damage (r = - 0.56 to - 0.49). Furthermore, reactance was found to correlate well with indirect indicators of EIMD, suggesting that it may be a suitable marker for evaluating EIMD. However, the relationship with the limited evaluation indices employed in this study is constrained. Future studies should investigate the correlation between reactance and direct damage indicators, such as structural damage, observed in biopsies.

Project description:Numerous studies have covered exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) topics, ranging from nutritional strategies to recovery methods, but few attempts have adequately explored and analyzed large volumes of scientific output. The purpose of this study was to assess the scientific output and research activity regarding EIMD and protein intake by conducting a bibliometric and visual analysis. Relevant publications from 1975-2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Quantitative and qualitative variables were collected, including the number of publications and citations, H-indexes, journals of citation reports, co-authorship, co-citation, and the co-occurrence of keywords. There were 351 total publications, with the number of annual publications steadily increasing. The United States has the highest total number of publications (26.21% of total publications, centrality 0.44). Institutional cooperation is mostly geographically limited, with few transnational cooperation links. EIMD and protein intake research is concentrated in high-quality journals in the disciplines of Sport Science, Physiology, Nutrition, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology. The top ten journals in the number of publications are mostly high-quality printed journals, and the top ten journals in centrality have an average impact factor of 13.845. The findings of the co-citation clusters and major keyword co-occurrence reveal that the most discussed research topics are "exercise mode", "nutritional strategies", "beneficial outcomes", and "proposed mechanisms". Finally, we identified the following research frontiers and research directions: developing a comprehensive understanding of new exercise or training models, nutritional strategies, and recovery techniques to alleviate EIMD symptoms and accelerate recovery; applying the concept of hormesis in EIMD to induce muscle hypertrophy; and investigating the underlying mechanisms of muscle fiber and membrane damage.

Project description:BackgroundBranched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation is one of the most popular strategies used by the general population and athletes to reduce muscle soreness and accelerate the recovery process of muscle damage biomarkers after an intense exercise or training session.ObjectivesThis systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of BCAA supplementation on muscle damage biomarkers and muscle soreness after exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD).MethodsThe systematic literature search for randomized controlled trials was conducted using seven databases, up to September 13th, 2022. The eligibility criteria for selecting studies were as follows: studies performed on healthy active participants, using BCAA at least once, controlled with a placebo or control group, performing resistance or endurance exercises, and followed up at least once post-EIMD. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the "SIGN RCT checklist". Random-effects meta-analyses were processed to compute the standardized mean difference (Hedges' g). Meta-regression analyses were completed with daily and total dosage and supplementation as continuous moderator variables.ResultsOf the 18 studies included in this meta-analysis, 13 were of high quality and five were of acceptable quality. Our results revealed BCAA supplementation elicits a significant effect on reducing creatine kinase (CK) levels immediately (g = - 0.44; p = 0.006) and 72 h (g = - 0.99; p = 0.002), but not 24 h, 48 h, and 96 h post-EIMD. Additionally, a significant effect on delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) was identified at 24 h (g = - 1.34; p < 0.001), 48 h (g = - 1.75; p < 0.001), 72 h (g = - 1.82; p < 0.001), and 96 h (g = - 0.82; p = 0.008), but not immediately post-EIMD. No significant effect was found on lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels at any time point. Meta-regression indicated higher daily and total dosages of BCAA, and longer supplementation periods were related to the largest beneficial effects on CK (total dosage and supplementation period) at 48 h, and on DOMS at 24 h (only daily dosage).ConclusionThe overall effects of BCAA supplementation could be considered useful for lowering CK and DOMS after EIMD, but not LDH. The longer supplementation period prior to the EIMD could be more effective for CK and DOMS reduction.

Project description:BackgroundPomegranate supplementation has been shown to reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, with some evidence suggesting it may accelerate recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), including metabolic, mechanical, and neuromuscular recovery.ObjectivesThis systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effects of pomegranate supplementation on markers of EIMD.MethodsA systematic search of Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science up to January 2024 identified studies evaluating pomegranate supplementation and exercise recovery. Studies involving athletes and nonathletes aged 18-55 were included. Weighted mean differences (WMDs) were calculated for EIMD markers. Study quality was assessed using a modified physiotherapy evidence database scale. This review was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (ID: CRD42024536905).ResultsTen studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pomegranate supplementation did not significantly affect markers of metabolic recovery, including myoglobin (WMD: -1.344 ng/mL; 95% confidence interval (CI): -4.11, 1.42 ng/mL, P = 0.342) and creatine kinase (WMD: -11.990 U/L; 95% CI: -28.64, 4.66 U/L, P = 0.158), or neuromuscular recovery, as indicated by lactate concentrations (WMD: -0.093 mmol/L; 95% CI: -0.39, 0.21 mmol/L, P = 0.546). Muscle soreness also remained unchanged (WMD: 0.999; 95% CI: -0.18, 2.17, P = 0.097). However, a significant reduction in lactate dehydrogenase amounts (WMD: -21.152 U/L; 95% CI: -39.29, -3.01 U/L, P = 0.022) immediately postexercise suggests a short-term protective effect against mechanical muscle damage.ConclusionsPomegranate supplementation does not appear to enhance overall recovery markers for EIMD but may offer short-term benefits for mechanical muscle damage. Standardizing supplementation regimens, dosages, and exercise protocols is crucial to better understand the potential benefits of pomegranate supplementation in EIMD recovery.
