Project description:Some nanoporous, crystalline materials possess dynamic constituents, for example, rotatable moieties. These moieties can undergo a conformation change in response to the adsorption of guest molecules, which qualitatively impacts adsorption behavior. We pose and solve a statistical mechanical model of gas adsorption in a porous crystal whose cages share a common ligand that can adopt two distinct rotational conformations. Guest molecules incentivize the ligands to adopt a different rotational configuration than maintained in the empty host. Our model captures inflections, steps, and hysteresis that can arise in the adsorption isotherm as a signature of the rotating ligands. The insights disclosed by our simple model contribute a more intimate understanding of the response and consequence of rotating ligands integrated into porous materials to harness them for gas storage and separations, chemical sensing, drug delivery, catalysis, and nanoscale devices. Particularly, our model reveals design strategies to exploit these moving constituents and engineer improved adsorbents with intrinsic thermal management for pressure-swing adsorption processes.

Project description:Shaped adsorbents (e.g., pellets, extrudates) are typically employed in several gas separation and sensing applications. The performance of these adsorbents is dictated by two key factors, their adsorption equilibrium capacity and kinetics. Often, adsorption equilibrium and textural properties are reported for materials. Adsorption kinetics are seldom presented due to the challenges associated with measuring them. The overarching goal of this work is to develop an approach to characterize the adsorption properties of individual shaped adsorbents with less than 100 mg of material. To this aim, we have developed an experimental dynamic sorption setup and complemented it with mathematical models, to describe the mass transport in the system. We embed these models into a derivative-free optimizer to predict model parameters for adsorption equilibrium and kinetics. We evaluate and independently validate the performance of our approach on three adsorbents that exhibit differences in their chemistry, synthesis, formulation, and textural properties. Further, we test the robustness of our mathematical framework using a digital twin. We show that the framework can rapidly (i.e., in a few hours) and quantitatively characterize adsorption properties at a milligram scale, making it suitable for the screening of novel porous materials.

Project description:Biomass waste treatment and detrimental dye adsorption are two of the crucial environmental issues nowadays. In this study, we investigate to simultaneously resolve the aforementioned issues by synthesizing chitosan sponges as adsorbents toward rose bengal (RB) dye adsorption. Through a temperature-controlled freeze-casting process, robust and recyclable chitosan sponges are fabricated with hierarchical porosities resulted from the control of concentrations of chitosan solutions. Tested as the adsorbents for RB, to the best of our knowledge, the as-prepared chitosan sponge in this work reports the highest adsorption capacity of RB (601.5 mg/g) ever. The adsorption mechanism, isotherm, kinetics, and thermodynamics are comprehensively studied by employing statistical analysis. Importantly and desirably, the sponge type of chitosan adsorbents exceedingly facilitates the retrieving and elution of chitosan sponges for recyclable uses. Therefore, the chitosan sponge adsorbent is demonstrated to possess dramatically squeezable capability with durability for 10,000 cycles and recyclable adsorption for at least 10 cycles, which provides an efficient and economical way for both biomass treatment and water purification.

Project description:Framework materials at the molecular level, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOF), were recently found to exhibit exotic and counterintuitive micromechanical properties. Stimulated by host-guest interactions, these so-called soft porous crystals can display counterintuitive adsorption phenomena such as negative gas adsorption (NGA). NGA materials are bistable frameworks where the occurrence of a metastable overloaded state leads to pressure amplification upon a sudden framework contraction. How can we control activation barriers and energetics via functionalization of the molecular building blocks that dictate the frameworks' mechanical response? In this work we tune the elastic and inelastic properties of building blocks at the molecular level and analyze the mechanical response of the resulting frameworks. From a set of 11 frameworks, we demonstrate that widening of the backbone increases stiffness, while elongation of the building blocks results in a decrease in critical yield stress of buckling. We further functionalize the backbone by incorporation of sp3 hybridized carbon atoms to soften the molecular building blocks, or stiffen them with sp2 and sp carbons. Computational modeling shows how these modifications of the building blocks tune the activation barriers within the energy landscape of the guest-free bistable frameworks. Only frameworks with free energy barriers in the range of 800 to 1100 kJ mol-1 per unit cell, and moderate yield stress of 0.6 to 1.2 nN for single ligand buckling, exhibit adsorption-induced contraction and negative gas adsorption. Advanced experimental in situ methodologies give detailed insights into the structural transitions and the adsorption behavior. The new framework DUT-160 shows the highest magnitude of NGA ever observed for nitrogen adsorption at 77 K. Our computational and experimental analysis of the energetics and mechanical response functions of porous frameworks is an important step towards tuning activation barriers in dynamic framework materials and provides critical design principles for molecular building blocks leading to pressure amplifying materials.

Project description:Metal-oxide sensors, detect gas through the reaction of surface oxygen molecules with target gases, are promising for the detection of toxic pollutant gases, combustible gases, and organic vapors; however, their sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability limit practical applications. Porous structure for increasing surface area, adding catalyst, and altering the operation temperature are proposed for enhancing the sensitivity and selectivity. Although humidity can significantly affect the property and stability of the sensors, studies focusing on the long-term stability of gas sensors are scarce. To reduce the effects of humidity, 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTS) was coated on a porous SnO2 film. The interconnected SnO2 nanowires improved the high surface area, and the PFOTS coating provided superhydrophobicity at water contact angle of 159°and perfect water vapor repellency inside E-SEM. The superhydrophobic porous morphology was maintained under relative humidity of 99% and operating temperature of 300 °C. The CO gas sensing of 5, 20, and 50 ppm were obtained with linearity at various humidity. Flame detection was also achieved with practical high humidity conditions. These results suggest the simple way for reliable sensing of nanostructured metal-oxide gas sensors with high sensitivity and long-term stability even in highly humid environments.

Project description:In the present study, the adsorptive removal of organophosphate diazinon pesticide using porous pumice adsorbent was experimentally investigated in a batch system, modelled and optimized upon response surface methodology (RSM) and artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA), fitted to isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic models. The quantification of adsorbent elements was determined using EDX. XRD analysis was utilized to study the crystalline properties of adsorbent. The FT-IR spectra were taken from adsorbent before and after adsorption to study the presence and changes in functional groups. The constituted composition of the adsorbent was determined by XRF. Also, the ionic strength and adsorbent reusability were explored. The influences of operational parameters like pH, initial pesticide concentration, adsorbent dosage and contact time were investigated systematically. ANN-GA and RSM techniques were used to identify the optimal process variables that result in the highest removal. Based on the RSM approach, the optimization conditions for maximum removal efficiency is obtained at pH = 3, adsorbent dosage = 4 g/L, contact time = 30 min, and initial pesticide concentration = 6.2 mg/L. To accurately identify the parameters of nonlinear isotherm and kinetic models, a hybrid evolutionary differential evolution optimization (DEO) is applied. Results indicated that the equilibrium adsorption data were best fitted with Langmuir and Temkin isotherms and kinetic data were well described by pseudo-first and second-order kinetic models. The thermodynamic parameters such as entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs energy were evaluated to study the effect of temperature on pesticide adsorption.

Project description:Graphdiyne, an emerging carbon allotrope, has attracted many researchers devoted to the study of its synthesis and application. The utilization of graphdiyne in gas adsorption and separation has been predicted by computer simulation with many examples. In this work, the triangular basic unit of graphdiyne was introduced into a triptycene-based porous organic polymer to obtain a three dimensional graphdiyne-like porous triptycene network named G-PTN. With high surface area and a microporous structure, G-PTN exhibited convincing application potential for the storage of gas molecules, especially for the selective adsorption of acetylene over ethylene. Computational simulation proved the importance of the triptycene units and three dimensional structure to the selectivity, as well as the potential of graphdiyne units as selective binding sites, suggesting that through judicious design, new three-dimensional porous graphdiyne could be acquired with better gas adsorption and separation performance.

Project description:Charged porous organic frameworks containing heteroatoms were synthesized via a Yamamoto-type Ullmann coupling reaction using potassium tetrakis(4-bromopyrazolyl)borate and tetrakis(4-chlorophenyl)phosphonium bromide as monomers. For the first time, a monomer containing boron atoms was successfully homocoupled to obtain a 3D charged porous organic framework. The heteroatoms and charges in the porous organic frameworks help to increase the interaction between the frameworks and the gases. Therefore the charged porous organic frameworks bearing heteroatoms synthesized in the present study exhibit high isosteric enthalpies of gas adsorption which surpass those of many other porous organic materials.

Project description:In recent years, new developments in controlling greenhouse gas emissions have been implemented to address the global climate conservation concern. Indeed, the earth's average temperature is being increased mainly due to burning fossil fuels, explicitly releasing high amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. Therefore, effective capture techniques are needed to reduce the concentration of CO2. In this regard, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been known as the promising materials for CO2 adsorption. Hence, study on the impact of the adsorption conditions along with the MOFs structural properties on their ability in the CO2 adsorption will open new doors for their further application in CO2 separation technologies as well. However, the high cost of the corresponding experimental study together with the instrument's error, render the use of computational methods quite beneficial. Therefore, the present study proposes a Gaussian process regression model with four kernel functions to estimate the CO2 adsorption in terms of pressure, temperature, pore volume, and surface area of MOFs. In doing so, 506 CO2 uptake values in the literature have been collected and assessed. The proposed GPR models performed very well in which the exponential kernel function, was shown as the best predictive tool with R2 value of 1. Also, the sensitivity analysis was employed to investigate the effectiveness of input variables on the CO2 adsorption, through which it was determined that pressure is the most determining parameter. As the main result, the accurate estimate of CO2 adsorption by different MOFs is obtained by briefly employing the artificial intelligence concept tools.

Project description:Assessing the efficacy of specific porous materials for use in various applications has been a central focus for many experimental studies over the years, with a view to altering the material properties according to the desired characteristics. The application potential for one such class of nanoporous materials-organic resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) gels-is of particular interest, due to their attractive and adjustable properties. In this work, we simulate adsorption analysis using lattice-based mean field theory, both in individual pores and within three-dimensional porous materials generated from a kinetic Monte Carlo cluster aggregation model. We investigate the impacts of varying pore size and geometry on the adsorptive behavior, with results agreeing with those previously postulated in the literature. The adsorption analysis is carried out for porous materials simulated with varying catalyst concentrations and solids contents, allowing their structural properties to be assessed from resulting isotherms and the adsorption and desorption processes visualized using density color maps. Isotherm analysis indicated that both low catalyst concentrations and low solids contents resulted in structures with open transport pores that were larger in width, while high catalyst concentrations and solids contents resulted in structures with bottleneck pores that were narrower. We present results from both the simulated isotherms and pore size analysis distributions, in addition to results from RF gels synthesized in the lab and analyzed experimentally, with significant similarities observed between the two. Not only do the results of this comparison validate the kinetic Monte Carlo model's ability to successfully capture the formation of RF gels under varying synthesis parameters, but they also show significant promise for the tailoring of material properties in an efficient and computationally inexpensive manner-something which would be pivotal in realizing their full application potential, and could be applied to other porous materials whose formation mechanism operates under similar principles.
