Project description:The presented study aims to explore the potential sources of common bio-wastes that could be successfully processed without any leftovers into materials for energy conversion and storage devices. We used chicken eggshells as an environmentally friendly precursor for electrode fillers in electrochemical capacitors (calcinated OS600 and OS900) and anode materials in Li-ion batteries (carbonized EM600 and EM900). Both groups of materials were obtained at two different temperatures to investigate the influence of their composition and properties on the electrochemical performance. Electrochemical capacitors with OS600 and OS900 substituted for 10 wt% of commercial activated carbon supplied similar capacitances, with OS600 stabilizing the long-term performance of the device. Also, both obtained anode materials are suitable for operation in Li-ion batteries, supplying a capacity of around 280 mA h g-1. Notably, EM900 is characterized by a well-developed structure, and as an anode, it exhibited better capacity retention of over 84%.

Project description:Disordered carbons derived from banana peel waste (BPW) were successfully obtained by employing a simple one-step activation/carbonization method. Different instrumental techniques were used to characterize the structural, morphological, and textural properties of the materials, including X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The chemical activation with different porogens (zinc chloride, potassium hydroxide and phosphoric acid) could be used to develop functional carbonaceous structures with high specific surface areas and significant quantities of pores. The BPW@H3PO4 carbon exhibited a high specific surface area (815 m2 g-1), chemical stability and good conductivity for use as an anode in lithium-ion batteries. After 200 cycles, this carbon delivered a reversible capacity of 272 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C, showing a notable retention capacity and good cycling performance even at high current densities, demonstrating its effectiveness and sustainability as an anode material for high-energy applications in Li-ion batteries.

Project description:Organic materials with the 5,10-dihydrophenazine motif are superior cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, the difficult accessibility and low capacity of such cathodes materials are obstacles to their practical applications. Herein, two novel oligomers, termed poly(5-methyl-10-(2-methacryloxypropyl)-5,10-dihydrophenazine) (PMPPZ) and poly(5-methyl-10-(2-methacryloxyethyl)-5,10-dihydrophenazine) (PMEPZ), were effectively synthesized from an industrial waste phenazine. Both oligomers were exploited successfully as excellent cathode materials for sustainable lithium-ion batteries. PMPPZ and PMEPZ exhibited good electrochemical stability and high initial discharge specific capacities of 88 mA h g-1 and 152 mA h g-1, respectively. Furthermore, upon in situ composition with MWCNTs, a composite material, named PMEPZ-MWCNTs, was achieved with enhanced stability and superior specific discharge capacity with the active-site utilization rate of up to 99%. PMEPZ-MWCNTs delivers high initial discharge capacity of up to 303 mA h g-1 and even 252 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles. Both oligomers exhibit double-electron transfer mechanisms. This work affords an alternative approach to utilizing phenazine as a useful material, circumventing the emission of vast environment harmful gases.

Project description:An analytical model is proposed to investigate properties of composite electrodes that utilize more than one active material. We demonstrate how the equations can be applied to aid in the design of electrodes by comparing silicon-graphite and tin-graphite composite negative electrodes as examples with practical relevance. Based on simple assumptions, the results show how volume expansion tolerance and initial porosity are important factors for the achievable gravimetric and volumetric capacities as well as volumetric energy density. A Si-alloy/graphite composite electrode is used as an experimental system to corroborate the formulated analysis. Kinetic limitations are also addressed based on a novel heuristic approach.

Project description:To develop an advanced anode for lithium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performance of a novel material comprising a porous artificial carbon (PAC)-Si composite was investigated. To increase the pore size and surface area of the composite, ammonium bicarbonate (ABC) was introduced during high-energy ball-milling, ensuring a uniform distribution of silicon within the PAC matrix. The physical and structural properties of the developed material were evaluated using several advanced techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and galvanostatic intermittent titration (GITT). Artificial graphite contains several macropores that can accommodate volume hysteresis and provide effective sites for anchoring Si nanoparticles, enabling efficient electrochemical reactions. GITT analysis revealed that the PAC-Si-CB-ABC composite exhibited superior lithium-ion diffusion compared to conventional graphite. The developed PAC(55%)-Si(45%)-CB-ABC electrode with PAA as the binder demonstrated a reversible capacity of 850 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 and a high-rate capability of 600 mAh g-1 at 2000 mA g-1. A full cell employing the NCM622 cathode exhibited reversible cyclability of 128.9 mAh g-1 with a reasonable energy density of 323.3 Wh kg-1. These findings suggest that the developed composite is a useful anode system for advanced lithium-ion batteries.

Project description:Fast-charging lithium-ion batteries are highly required, especially in reducing the mileage anxiety of the widespread electric vehicles. One of the biggest bottlenecks lies in the sluggish kinetics of the Li+ intercalation into the graphite anode; slow intercalation will lead to lithium metal plating, severe side reactions, and safety concerns. The premise to solve these problems is to fully understand the reaction pathways and rate-determining steps of graphite during fast Li+ intercalation. Herein, we compare the Li+ diffusion through the graphite particle, interface, and electrode, uncover the structure of the lithiated graphite at high current densities, and correlate them with the reaction kinetics and electrochemical performances. It is found that the rate-determining steps are highly dependent on the particle size, interphase property, and electrode configuration. Insufficient Li+ diffusion leads to high polarization, incomplete intercalation, and the coexistence of several staging structures. Interfacial Li+ diffusion and electrode transportation are the main rate-determining steps if the particle size is less than 10 μm. The former is highly dependent on the electrolyte chemistry and can be enhanced by constructing a fluorinated interphase. Our findings enrich the understanding of the graphite structural evolution during rapid Li+ intercalation, decipher the bottleneck for the sluggish reaction kinetics, and provide strategic guidelines to boost the fast-charging performance of graphite anode.

Project description:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries require rational air electrode concepts to achieve high energy densities. We report a simple but effective electrode design based on graphite nanosheets (GNS) as active material to facilitate the discharge reaction. In contrast to other carbon forms we tested, GNS show a distinctive two-step discharge behavior. Fundamental aspects of the battery's discharge profile were examined in different depths of discharge using scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. We attribute the second stage of discharge to the electrochemically induced expansion of graphite, which allows an increase in the discharge product uptake. Raman spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction confirmed the main discharge product to be Li2O2, which was found as particulate coating on GNS at the electrode top, and in damaged areas at the bottom together with Li2CO3 and Li2O. Large discharge capacity comes at a price: the chemical and structural integrity of the cathode suffers from graphite expansion and unwanted byproducts. In addition to the known instability of the electrode-electrolyte interface, new challenges emerge from high depths of discharge. The mechanistic origin of the observed effects, as well as air electrode design strategies to deal with them, are discussed in this study.

Project description:Although silicon is being researched as one of the most promising anode materials for future generation lithium-ion batteries owing to its greater theoretical capacity (3579 mAh g-1), its practical applicability is hampered by its worse rate properties and poor cycle performance. Herein, a silicon/graphite/amorphous carbon (Si/G/C) anode composite material has been successfully prepared by a facile spray-drying method followed by heating treatment, exhibiting excellent electrochemical performance compared with silicon/amorphous carbon (Si/C) in lithium-ion batteries. At 0.1 A g-1, the Si/G/C sample exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 1886 mAh g-1, with a high initial coulombic efficiency of 90.18%, the composite can still deliver a high initial charge capacity of 800 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1, and shows a superior cyclic and rate performance compared to the Si/C anode sample. This work provides a facile approach to synthesize Si/G/C composite for lithium-ion batteries and has proven that graphite replacing amorphous carbon can effectively improve the electrochemical performance, even using low-performance micrometer silicon and large size flake graphite.

Project description:The issue of long charging time for electric vehicles has been a matter of serious concern, and the problem is mainly stemmed from the graphite anode. The slow kinetics of pure graphite can lead to the formation of the lithium metal during fast charging, which triggers cycle degradation and safety issues of electric vehicles. In order to ameliorate the fast charging issue, a spherical hard carbon/graphite porous electrode is devised. Based on this, the discharge capacity ratio at 3C shows an improvement of about 40% at 25°C and at 1C shows an improvement of about 18% at 0°C. Additionally, the 300-cycle capacity retentions exhibit increases of 12% and 14% at temperature of 25°C and 50°C, respectively. Generally, the analysis shows that the spherical hard carbon/graphite porous electrode has more uniform porous structure, shorter transport path, less nano-scale powder and a certain voltage buffer ability compared to the pure graphite powder system, which enhance the ion transport kinetics, and reduce the side reactions under the high temperature, so as to effectively improve the fast charging performance and cycle life of the LIBs. It is also proved that the kinetics improvement is not only attributed to the high kinetics inherited from the instinct of hard carbon, but also the porous electrode structures constructed by the two-size powder system of graphite and hard carbon.

Project description:The carbon net negative conversion of bio-char, the low value byproduct of pyrolysis bio-oil production from biomass, to high value, very high purity, highly crystalline flake graphite agglomerates with rationally designed shape and size tailored for lithium-ion battery energy storage material is reported. The process is highly efficient, 0.41 g/Wh; the energy content of its co-product of the process, bio-oil, exceeds that needed to power the process. It is shown that the shape of the starting material is retained during the transformation, allowing the ultimate morphology of the graphite agglomerates to be engineered from relatively malleable biomass. In contrast to commercial graphite production, the process can be performed at small scale with low equipment costs, enabling individual research laboratories to produce Li-ion grade graphite with customizable shape, size and porosity for Si/graphite composite and other graphite involved anodes. The mechanism of the graphitization of bio-char, a "non-graphitizable" carbon, is explored, suggesting the molten metal catalyst is absorbed into the pore structure, transported through and transforming the largely immobile biochar. Finally, the transformation of biomass to rationally designed graphite morphologies with Li-ion anode performance that closely mimic commercial shaped graphite is demonstrated.
