Project description:This study aims to examine in detail for the first time the cytotoxic profile of twelve choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (NADES) against HT-29, Caco-2, MCF-7, and MRC-5 cell lines. All NADES systems were synthesized by microwave synthesis using choline chloride as a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and selected sugars, alcohols, organic acids, and urea as hydrogen bond donors (HBD) with the addition of 20% water (w/w) to all systems. It was observed that the cytotoxic effect predominantly depended on the structure of HBD. Acidic systems, where HBDs were organic acids showed the highest cytotoxic effects in all investigated cell lines. The cytotoxicity depended mostly on the concentration of the NADES system in the cell medium as well as on the chemical constitution of the investigated systems. The highest cytotoxic effects showed acidic systems, especially to the HT-29 cell line. The EC50 value for the citric acid-based system was 3.91 mg mL-1 for the HT-29 cell line which was the most vulnerable to acidic NADES systems.

Project description:The heavy metals in the effluents of industries threatens the human health. In this research, aqueous two-phase systems based on two deep eutectic solvents, choline chloride/urea and betaine/urea, along with dipotassium hydrogen phosphate, were used as environmentally friendly systems to extract hexavalent chromium. Binodal curves and tie lines were obtained for two systems. The effect of temperature, pH, metal concentration and salt composition was investigated on the extraction efficiency of chromium. Increasing the temperature, the concentration of metal and the amount of salt increased the extraction efficiency. The system consisting of choline chloride/urea had better extraction than other and showed extraction efficiency of 86.82 ± 1.99 at pH = 10 and temperature of 25 ºC and metal concentration of 80 mg/l. the system based on betaine/urea showed extraction efficiency of 89.51 ± 1.69 at pH = 8.9 and temperature of 25 °C and metal concentration of 80 mg/l. Considering the same cost of two systems, the system including betaine/urea was evaluated as a better system for the separation of chromium. These systems were also used to separate lead, cobalt, nickel and cadmium that showed their high tendency to the low phase.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are one of the most promising green technologies to emerge in recent years given their combination of environmentally friendly credentials and useful functionalities. Considering the continued search for new DES - especially those that exemplify the aforementioned characteristics, we report the preparation of DES based on natural analogues of l-ascorbic acid for the first time. The onset of eutectic melting occurred at temperatures far below the melting point of the individual components and resulted in the generation of glass forming fluids with glass transition temperatures, viscosities and flow behavior that are comparable to similar systems. This work expands the current array of DES that can be produced using naturally occurring components, which given their potential to be bio-derived, interesting physicochemical properties (e. g. propensity to supercool and vitrify) and apparent antibacterial nature, may provide utility within a range of applications.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an emerging class of non-aqueous solvents that are potentially scalable, easy to prepare and functionalize for many applications ranging from biomass processing to energy storage technologies. Predictive understanding of the fundamental correlations between local structure and macroscopic properties is needed to exploit the large design space and tunability of DESs for specific applications. Here, we employ a range of computational and experimental techniques that span length-scales from molecular to macroscopic and timescales from picoseconds to seconds to study the evolution of structure and dynamics in model DESs, namely Glyceline and Ethaline, starting from the parent compounds. We show that systematic addition of choline chloride leads to microscopic heterogeneities that alter the primary structural relaxation in glycerol and ethylene glycol and result in new dynamic modes that are strongly correlated to the macroscopic properties of the DES formed.

Project description:In this study, the conversion of monosaccharides to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) using different deep eutectic solvents (DESs) was investigated in various conditions. Among all the investigated DESs, [ChCl][trichloroacetic acid], based on choline chloride and trichloroacetic acid with the ratio 1:1, showed the highest catalytic activity. A maximum 5-HMF yield was 82 % for 1 h at 100 °C using [ChCl][trichloroacetic acid] as a catalyst from fructose. [ChCl][trichloroacetic acid] could be recovered and reused three times with a slight loss in activity. Our work demonstrated the low-cost and effective method for the synthesis of 5-HMF from carbohydrates.

Project description:Electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells remain a challenge for large-scale production and commercialization, hindering the wide application of solar cells. We have developed two new electrolyte-based deep eutectic solvents using a mixture of choline chloride with urea and with ethylene glycol for dye-sensitized solar cells. The prominent features of the two deep eutectic solvent electrolytes are simple preparation for large-scale production with inexpensive, available, and nontoxic starting materials and biodegradability. The solar cell devices proceeded in a safe manner as the two deep eutectic solvents afforded low-cost technology and comparative conversion efficiency to a popular ionic liquid, namely 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetracyanoborate. Results showed that devices with choline chloride and urea electrolyte exhibited improved open circuit voltage values (V OC), while the ones with choline chloride and ethylene glycol showed an increase in the short circuit current (I sc). Characterization of the devices by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy helped explain the effects of their molecular structures on the enhancement of either V OC or I sc values. These new solvents expand the electrolyte choices for designing dye-sensitized solar cells, especially for the purpose of using low-cost and eco-friendly materials for massive production.

Project description:Choline-based deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are potential candidates to replace flammable organic solvent electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The effect of the addition of a lithium salt on the structure and dynamics of the material needs to be clarified before it enters the battery. Here, the archetypical DES choline chloride:urea at 1:2 mole fraction has been added with lithium chloride at two different concentrations and the effect of the additional cation has been evaluated with respect to the non-doped system via multinuclear NMR techniques. 1H and 7Li spin-lattice relaxation times and diffusion coefficients have been measured between 298 K and 373 K and revealed a decrease in both rotational and translational mobility of the species after LiCl doping at a given temperature. Temperature dependent 35Cl linewidths reflect the viscosity increase upon LiCl addition, yet keep track of the lithium complexation. Quantitative indicators such as correlation times and activation energies give indirect insights into the intermolecular interactions of the mixtures, while lithium single-jump distance and transference number shed light into the lithium transport, being then of help in the design of future DES electrolytes.

Project description:Amine absorption (or amine scrubbing) is currently the most established method for CO2 capture; however, it has environmental shortcomings and is energy-intensive. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are an interesting alternative to conventional amines. Due to their biodegradability, lower toxicity and lower prices, DESs are considered to be "more benign" absorbents for CO2 capture than ionic liquids. In this work, the CO2 absorption capacity of choline-chloride/levulinic-acid-based (ChCl:LvAc) DESs was measured at different temperatures, pressures and stirring speeds using a vapour-liquid equilibrium rig. DES regeneration was performed using a heat treatment method. The DES compositions studied had ChCl:LvAc molar ratios of 1:2 and 1:3 and water contents of 0, 2.5 and 5 mol%. The experimental results showed that the CO2 absorption capacity of the ChCl:LvAc DESs is strongly affected by the operating pressure and stirring speed, moderately affected by the temperature and minimally affected by the hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA):hydrogen bond donator (HBD) molar ratio as well as water content. Thermodynamic properties for CO2 absorption were calculated from the experimental data. The regeneration of the DESs was performed at different temperatures, with the optimal regeneration temperature estimated to be 80 °C. The DESs exhibited good recyclability and moderate CO2/N2 selectivity.

Project description:Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been extensively studied as promising green solvents to attain a better removal efficiency of sulfide. A new DES system formed from choline chloride (ChCl), benzene sulfonic acid (BSA), and ethylene glycol (EG) as a class of ternary DESs was prepared and used in the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of different sulfides. Ternary DESs have distinct advantages such as volatility and high activity compared with organic acid-based binary DESs. Under the optimum conditions with VDES/VOil = 1 : 5, O/S (molar ratio of oxygen to sulfur) = 5, and T = 25 °C, the desulfurization efficiencies of dibenzothiophene (DBT), 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT), and benzothiophene (BT) were all achieved to 100% in 2 h. Through experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods, this new system as a class of ternary DESs shows good stability and excellent desulfurization performance at room temperature. The investigation of this study could supply a new idea of ternary DESs for oxidative desulfurization.
