Project description:TiO2 has garnered significant attention in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to its non-toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and exceptional photochemical stability. However, its practical efficiency in H2 production is greatly hindered by inherent limitations such as low electron mobility, a short carrier diffusion length, and a wide optical band gap. Herein, we present a strategy of combining a crystal phase heterojunction and crystal facet heterojunction to enhance electron-hole separation efficiency in TiO2. The crystal facet heterojunction of rutile TiO2 extends the photogenerated electron lifetime by exploiting discontinuous band gaps and accelerates space charge separation. Moreover, the band alignment between rutile and anatase TiO2 is favorable for electron transfer from rutile to anatase through a phase heterojunction. Consequently, the inverse opal anatase/rutile TiO2 nanorod (IO-TiO2/NRs-TiO2) photoanode affords an excellent hydrogen production rate (682 μmol h-1 g-1), which is 1.6 times higher than that of an inverse opal anatase/rutile TiO2 single heterojunction and 3 times higher than that of inverse opal anatase. This work provides valuable insights into the rational design of photoanodes with a 3D hierarchical structure.

Project description:New insight into junction-based designs for efficient charge separation is vitally important for current solar energy conversion research. Herein, an anatase-rutile phase junction is elaborately introduced into TiO2 films by rapid thermal annealing treatment and the roles of phase junction on charge separation and transfer are studied in detail. A combined study of transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical (PEC) measurements reveals that appropriate phase alignment is essential for unidirectional charge transfer, and a junction interface with minimized trap states is crucial to liberate the charge separation potential of the phase junction. By tailored control of phase alignment and interface structure, an optimized TiO2 film with an appropriately introduced phase junction shows superior performance in charge separation and transfer, hence achieving ca. 3 and 9 times photocurrent density enhancement compared to pristine anatase and rutile phase TiO2 electrodes, respectively. This work demonstrates the great potential of phase junctions for efficient charge separation and transfer in solar energy conversion applications.

Project description:TiO2 photocatalyst is of interest for antimicrobial coatings on hospital touch-surfaces. Recent research has focused on visible spectrum enhancement of photocatalytic activity. Here, we report TiO2 with a high degree of nanostructure, deposited on stainless steel as a solid layer more than 10 μm thick by pulsed-pressure-MOCVD. The TiO2 coating exhibits a rarely-reported microstructure comprising anatase and rutile in a composite with amorphous carbon. Columnar anatase single crystals are segmented into 15-20 nm thick plates, resulting in a mille-feuilles nanostructure. Polycrystalline rutile columns exhibit dendrite generation resembling pine tree strobili. We propose that high growth rate and co-deposition of carbon contribute to formation of the unique nanostructures. High vapor flux produces step-edge instabilities in the TiO2, and solid carbon preferentially co-deposits on certain high energy facets. The equivalent effective surface area of the nanostructured coating is estimated to be 100 times higher than standard TiO2 coatings and powders. The coatings prepared on stainless steel showed greater than 3-log reduction in viable E coli after 4 hours visible light exposure. The pp-MOCVD approach could represent an up-scalable manufacturing route for supported catalysts of functional nanostructured materials without having to make nanoparticles.

Project description:In nanostructured thin films, photogenerated charge carriers can access the surface more easily than in dense films and thus react more readily. However, the high surface area of these films has also been associated with enhanced recombination losses via surface states. We herein use transient absorption spectroscopy to compare the ultrafast charge carrier kinetics in dense and nanostructured TiO2 films for its two most widely used polymorphs: anatase and rutile. We find that nanostructuring does not enhance recombination rates on ultrafast time scales, indicating that surface state mediated recombination is not a key loss pathway for either TiO2 polymorph. Rutile shows faster, and less intensity-dependent recombination than anatase, which we assign to its higher doping density. For both polymorphs, we conclude that bulk rather than surface recombination is the primary determinant of charge carrier lifetime.

Project description:We report a simple room-temperature synthesis route for increasing the reactivity of a TiO2 photocatalyst using a solution plasma process (SPP). Hydrogen radicals generated from the SPP chamber interact with the TiO2 photocatalyst feedstock, transforming its crystalline phase and introducing oxygen vacancy defects. In this work, we examined a pure anatase TiO2 as a model feedstock because of its photocatalytic attributes and well-characterized properties. After the SPP treatment, the pure anatase crystalline phase was transformed to an anatase/brookite heterocrystalline phase with oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the SPP treatment promoted the absorption of both UV and visible light by TiO2. As a result, TiO2 treated by the SPP for 3 h showed a high gaseous photocatalytic performance (91.1%) for acetaldehyde degradation to CO2 compared with the activity of untreated TiO2 (51%). The SPP-treated TiO2 was also more active than nitrogen-doped TiO2 driven by visible light (66%). The overall photocatalytic performance was related to the SPP treatment time. The SPP technique could be used to enhance the activity of readily available feedstocks with a short processing time. These results demonstrate the potential of this method for modifying narrow-band gap metal oxides, metal sulfides, and polymer composite-based catalyst materials. The modifications of these materials are not limited to photocatalysts and could be used in a wide range of energy and environment-based applications.

Project description:In this article, we demonstrate the position-controlled hydrothermal growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods using a new scanning probe lithography method in which a silicon tip, commonly used for atomic force microscopy, was pulled across an anatase TiO2 film. This process scratches the film causing tiny anatase TiO2 nanoparticles to form on the surface. According to previous reports, these anatase particles convert into rutile nanocrystals and provide the growth of rutile TiO2 nanorods in well-defined areas. Due to the small tip radius, the resolution of this method is excellent and the method is quite inexpensive compared to electron-beam lithography and similar methods providing a position-controlled growth of semiconducting TiO2 nanostructures.

Project description:The construction of anatase/rutile heterojunctions in TiO2 is an effective way of improving the CO2 photoreduction activity. Yet, the origin of the superior photocatalytic performance is still unclear. To solve this issue, the band edges between anatase and rutile phases were theoretically determined based on the three-phase atomic model of (112)A/II/(101)R, and simultaneously the CO2 reduction processes were meticulously investigated. Our calculations show that photogenerated holes can move readily from anatase to rutile via the thin intermediated II phase, while photoelectrons flowing in the opposite direction may be impeded due to the electron trapping sites at the II phase. However, the large potential drop across the anatase/rutile interface and the strong built-in electric field can provide an effective driving force for photoelectrons' migration to anatase. In addition, the II phase can better enhance the solar light utilization of (112)A/(100)II, including a wide light response range and an intensive optical absorption coefficient. Meanwhile, the mixed-phase TiO2 possesses negligible hydrogenation energy (CO2 to COOH*) and lower rate-limiting energy (HCOOH* to HCO*), which greatly facilitate CH3OH generation. The efficient charge separation, strengthened light absorption, and facile CO2 reduction successfully demonstrate that the anatase/rutile mixed-phase TiO2 is an efficient photocatalyst utilized for CO2 conversion.

Project description:Metal oxide semiconductor hetero- and homojunctions are commonly constructed to improve the performance of hydrogen sensors at room temperature. In this study, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was employed to prepare TiO2 films with homojunctions of rutile and anatase phases (denoted as TiO2-R/A). Then, the microstructure of anatase-phase TiO2 was altered by controlling the amount of hydrochloric acid to realize a more favorable porous structure for charge transport and a larger surface area for contact with H2. The sensor used a Pt interdigital electrode. At an optimal HCl dosage (25 mL), anatase-phase TiO2 uniformly covered rutile-phase TiO2 nanorods, resulting in a greater response to H2 at 2500 ppm compared with that of a rutile TiO2 nanorod sensor by a factor of 1153. The response time was 21 s, mainly because the homojunction formed by the TiO2 rutile and anatase phases increased the synergistic effect of the charge transfer and potential barrier between the two phases, resulting in the formation of more superoxide (O2-) free radicals on the surface. Furthermore, the porous structure increased the surface area for H2 adsorption. The TiO2-R/A-based sensor exhibited high selectivity, long-term stability, and a fast response. This study provides new insights into the design of commercially competitive hydrogen sensors.

Project description:We use first-principles density functional theory calculations to analyze the effect of chromia nanocluster modification on TiO2 rutile (110) and anatase (101) surfaces, in which both dry/perfect and wet/hydroxylated TiO2 surfaces are considered. We show that the adsorption of chromia nanoclusters on both surfaces is favorable and results in a reduction of the energy gap due to a valence band upshift. A simple model of the photoexcited state confirms this red shift and shows that photoexcited electrons and holes will localize on the chromia nanocluster. The oxidation states of the cations show that Ti3+, Cr4+, and Cr2+ (with no Cr6+) can be present. To probe potential reactivity, the energy of oxygen vacancy formation is shown to be significantly reduced compared to that of pure TiO2 and chromia. Finally, we show that inclusion of water on the TiO2 surface, to begin inclusion of environment effects, has no notable effect on the energy gap or oxygen vacancy formation. These results help us to understand earlier experimental work on chromia-modified anatase TiO2 and demonstrate that chromia-modified TiO2 presents an interesting composite system for photocatalysis.

Project description:TiO2 has been generally studied for photocatalytic sterilization, but its antibacterial activities are limited. Herein, TiO2 nanospheres with rutile/anatase heterophase junctions are prepared by a wet chemical/annealing method. The large BET surface area and pore size are beneficial for the absorption of bacteria. The rutile/anatase heterojunctions narrow the bandgap, which enhances light absorption. The rutile/anatase heterojunctions also efficiently promote the photogenerated carriers' separation, finally producing a high yield of radical oxygen species, such as •O2- and •OH, to sterilize bacteria. As a consequence, the obtained TiO2 nanospheres with rutile/anatase heterojunctions present an improved antibacterial performance against E. coli (98%) within 3 h of simulated solar light irradiation, exceeding that of TiO2 nanospheres without annealing (amorphous) and TiO2 nanospheres annealing at 350 and 550 °C (pure anatase). Furthermore, we design a photocatalytic antibacterial spray to protect the file paper. Our study reveals that the TiO2 nanospheres with rutile/anatase heterojunctions are a potential candidate for maintaining the durability of paper in the process of archival protection.
