Project description:The effect of anchoring groups on the optical and electrochemical properties of triphenylamine-thienothiophenes, and on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs photosensitized with the prepared dyes, was studied using newly synthesized compounds with cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3-acetic acid groups. Precursor aldehydes were synthesized through Suzuki cross-coupling, whereas Knoevenagel condensation of these with 2-cyanoacetic acid or rhodanine-3-acetic acid afforded the final push-pull dyes. A comprehensive photophysical study was performed in solution and in the solid state. The femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectra for the synthesized dyes were obtained following photoexcitation in solution and for the dyes adsorbed to TiO2 mesoporous films. Information on conformation, electronic structure, and electron distribution was obtained by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. Triphenylamine-thienothiophene functionalized with a cyanoacetic acid anchoring group displayed the highest conversion efficiency (3.68%) as the dye sensitizer in nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cells. Coadsorption studies were performed for this dye with the ruthenium-based N719 dye, and they showed dye power conversion efficiencies enhanced by 20-64%. The best cell performance obtained with the coadsorbed N719 and cyanoacetic dye showed an efficiency of 6.05%.

Project description:Determining an ideal adsorption configuration for a dye on the semiconductor surface is an important task in improving the overall efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells. Here, we present a detailed investigation of different adsorption configurations of designed model dyes on TiO2 anatase (101) surface using first principles methods. Particularly, we aimed to investigate the influence of cyano group in the anchoring part of dye on its adsorption stability and the overall photovoltaic properties such as open circuit voltage, electron injection ability to the surface. Our results indicate that the inclusion of cyano group increases the stability of adsorption only when it adsorbs via CN with the surface and it decreases the photovoltaic properties when it does not involve in binding. In addition, we also considered full dyes based on the results of model dyes and investigated the different strength of acceptor abilities on stability and electron injection ability. Among the various adsorption configurations considered here, the bidentate bridging mode (A3) is more appropriate one which has higher electron injection ability, larger VOC value and more importantly it has higher dye loading on the surface.

Project description:The electronic absorption spectra, ground-state geometries and electronic structures of symmetric and asymmetric squaraine dyes (SQD1-SQD4) were investigated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD-DFT) density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311++G** level. The calculated ground-state geometries reveal pronounced conjugation in these dyes. Long-range corrected time dependent density functionals Perdew, Burke and Ernzerhof (PBE, PBE1PBE (PBE0)), and the exchange functional of Tao, Perdew, Staroverov, and Scuseria (TPSSh) with 6-311++G** basis set were employed to examine optical absorption properties. In an extensive comparison between the optical data and DFT benchmark calculations, the BEP functional with 6-311++G** basis set was found to be the most appropriate in describing the electronic absorption spectra. The calculated energy values of lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO) were 3.41, 3.19, 3.38 and 3.23 eV for SQD1, SQD2, SQD3, and SQD4, respectively. These values lie above the LUMO energy (-4.26 eV) of the conduction band of TiO₂ nanoparticles indicating possible electron injection from the excited dyes to the conduction band of the TiO₂ in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Also, aromaticity computation for these dyes are in good agreement with the data obtained optically and geometrically with SQD4 as the highest aromatic structure. Based on the optimized molecular geometries, relative positions of the frontier orbitals, and the absorption maxima, we propose that these dyes are suitable components of photovoltaic DSSC devices.

Project description:The photophysical properties of a deep-red fluorescent squaraine dye can be improved by encapsulating it within a tetralactam macrocycle. Three new tetralactams are described with different substituents (methyl, methoxy, methylenedioxy) on the macrocycle aromatic sidewalls. The capability of each tetralactam to encapsulate a squaraine dye in chloroform solution was determined experimentally using absorption, fluorescence, and NMR spectroscopy. Two of the tetralactams were found to thread a squaraine dye with association constants on the order of 106 M-1, while a third macrocycle exhibited no squaraine affinity. An X-ray crystal structure of the third tetralactam showed that the substituents sterically blocked squaraine association. Of the two tetralactams that encapsulate a squaraine, one induces an increase in squaraine fluorescence quantum yield, while the other quenches the squaraine fluorescence. The results suggest that these new squaraine binding systems will be useful for biological imaging and diagnostics applications.

Project description:Highly stable symmetric and asymmetric squaraine fluorophores have been synthesized featuring an internal salt bridge between a quaternary ammonium cation and the central oxycyclobutenolate ring of the chromophore. Some of our newly synthesized symmetric and asymmetric compounds display increased molar absorptivity, quantum yield in serum, and thermal/photochemical stability over previously reported squaraine-based dyes. Consequently, both classes show great promise in resurfacing the normal environment-labile squaraine dyes as novel imaging agents and scaffolds for fluorescence sensing. Furthermore, incorporating a covalent attachment point away from the conjugated system allows for biological tagging applications without disturbing the optimum optical characteristics of the newly designed fluorophore.

Project description:In this article, we report two indole-based metal-free organic dyes In-T-2C (3-(5-(3-((2-carboxy-2-cyanovinyl)-1-pentyl-1H-indol-5-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2-isocyanoacrylic acid) and In-B-C (2-cyano-3-(5-(4-cyanophenyl)-1-pentyl-1H-indol-3-yl)acrylic acid) with A-π-D-A architecture. The molecular structures of metal-free indole-based A-π-D-A organic dyes were elucidated using FT-IR, NMR, HRMS and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. The present investigation examined the features of the synthesized dyes employing photophysical attributes, electrochemical traits and theoretical studies were executed to acquire a detailed comprehension of the geometry, electronic structure and absorption spectra of the synthesized dyes using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). Additionally, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were fabricated using newly synthesized dyes and examined their photovoltaic activity. Electrochemical impedance analysis (EIS) was performed to recognize the interfacial charge transfer in the DSSCs. The In-T-2C dye-based DSSC device exhibited an uppermost fill factor (FF) of 0.63, resulting in the uppermost open-circuit voltage (V OC) of 540.2 mV and highest efficiency (η) of 4.12% due to the highest short-circuit current density (J SC) of 12.1 mA cm-2 compared to the In-B-C dye (V OC = 497 mV, J SC = 1.07, FF = 0.70, η = 0.38%).

Project description:Indoline (In) and aniline (An) donor-based visible light active unsymmetrical squaraine (SQ) dyes were synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where the position of An and In units was changed with respect to the anchoring group (carboxylic acid) to have In-SQ-An-CO2H and An-SQ-In-CO2H sensitizers, AS1-AS5. Linear or branched alkyl groups were functionalized with the N atom of either In or An units to control the aggregation of the dyes on TiO2. AS1-AS5 exhibit an isomeric π-framework where the squaric acid unit is placed in the middle, where AS2 and AS5 dyes possess the anchoring group connected with the An donor, and AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes having the anchoring group connected with the In donor. Hence, the conjugation between the middle squaric acid acceptor unit and the anchoring -CO2H group is short for AS2, AS5, and AK2 and longer for AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes. AS dyes showed absorption between 501 and 535 nm with extinction coefficients of 1.46-1.61 × 105 M-1 cm-1. Further, the isomeric π-framework of An-SQ-In-CO2H and In-SQ-An-CO2H exhibited by means of changing the position of In and An units a bathochromic shift in the absorption properties of AS2 and AS5 compared to the AS1, AS3, and AS4 dyes. The DSSC device fabricated with the dyes contains short acceptor-anchoring group distance (AS2 and AS5) showed high photovoltaic performances compared to the dyes having longer distance (AS1, AS3, and AS4) with the iodolyte (I-/I3-) electrolyte. DSSC device efficiencies of 5.49, 6.34, 6.16, and 5.57% have been achieved for AS1, AS2, AS3, and AS4 dyes, respectively; without chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA), small changes have been observed in the device performance of the AS dyes with CDCA. Significant changes have been noted in the DSSC parameters (open-circuit voltage VOC, short-circuit current JSC, fill factor ff, and efficiency η) for the AS5 dye while sensitized with CDCA and showed highest DSSC efficiency of 8.01% in the AS dye series. This study revealed the potential of shorter SQ acceptor-anchoring group distance over the longer one and the importance of alkyl groups on the overall DSSC device performance for the unsymmetrical squaraine dyes.

Project description:Anchoring groups for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) play a decisive role in high-power conversion efficiency (η) and long-term cell durability. To date, a carboxylic acid is the most widely used anchoring group for DSSCs. However, the carboxylic acid tends to dissociate from a TiO2 surface during the cell operation as well as in the presence of water. Considering that the dye dissociation from TiO2 leads to a decrease in the cell performance, stable anchoring groups are highly desirable to achieve long-term durability of DSSCs toward their practical application. In this study, we designed and synthesized a series of porphyrin dyes with the triethoxysilyl anchoring groups, ZnPSi1, ZnPSi2, and ZnPSi3, to evaluate the effects of the silicon-based anchoring group on cell durability and photovoltaic properties. The DSSCs based on ZnPSi1, ZnPSi2, and ZnPSi3 exhibited moderate η-values of 2.2, 4.7, and 2.3%, respectively. It is noteworthy that the η-value of the DSSC based on ZnPSi2 (4.7%) is the highest among DSSCs based on porphyrin dyes with silicon-based anchoring groups. The moderate η-values are mainly attributed to the low charge collection efficiency originating from the low surface coverage and plausible tilted geometry of the dyes on TiO2. More importantly, we demonstrated that the DSSC based on ZnPSi2 revealed higher long-term cell durability under illumination than that based on reference porphyrin YD2 -o -C8 having a conventional carboxylic acid anchoring group.

Project description:The effects of anchoring groups on triarylamine-based p-type dyes were studied by substituting the strong electron-withdrawing carboxyl group with the weak electron-withdrawing pyridyl and the electron-rich catechol groups. Judged by the index t, the charge separation would be improved greatly when the carboxyl group of P4 is replaced by the pyridyl or catechol groups. Although carboxyl as an anchoring group lowers the HOMO energy and facilitates the hole injection in comparison with pyridyl and catechol groups, the weak electron-withdrawing pyridyl and the electron-rich catechol groups facilitate the charge separation. E g becomes narrow as the electron-withdrawing abilities of the anchoring groups decrease or as the conjugation extends. Both the extended π-spacers and the substitution of carboxyl with pyridyl and catechol groups promote the redshifts of adsorption wavelengths. The oscillator strengths for all dyes are over 2.00, indicating that all the dyes are able to harvest the sunlight strongly. The ΔG CR values of P4, DF4, and DZ4 are smaller than those of the other dyes. Also, these dyes have larger adsorption over infrared visible light, indicating that these dyes may be good candidates for p-type DSSCs.

Project description:A phosphorus(III)-mediated dearomatization of ortho-substituted dianiline squaraine dyes results in an unusual skeletal rearrangement to provide exotic, highly conjugated benzofuranone and oxindole scaffolds bearing a C3 side chain comprised of a linear conflagration of an enol, a phosphorus ylide, and 2,4-disubstituted aniline. Employing experimental and computational analysis, a mechanistic evaluation revealed a striking dependence on the acidity of the aniline ortho substituent. Notably, the rearrangement adducts underwent rapid and complete reversion to the parent squaraine in the presence of a Brønsted acid.
