Project description:In this paper, we present a novel, one-step synthesis of SnO2 nanoparticle-CeO2 nanorod sensing material using a surfactant-mediated hydrothermal method. The bifunctional utility of the synthesized sensing material toward room-temperature sensing of CO gas and low-concentration optosensing of arsenic has been thoroughly investigated. The CeO2-SnO2 nanohybrid was characterized using sophisticated analytical techniques such as transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and so forth. The CeO2-SnO2 nanohybrid-based sensor exhibited a strong response toward CO gas at room temperature. Under a low concentration (3 ppm) of CO gas, the CeO2-SnO2 sensing material showed an excellent response time of 21.1 s for 90% of the response was achieved with a higher recovery time of 59.6 s. The nanohybrid sensor showed excellent low-concentration (1 ppm) sensing behavior which is ∼6.7 times higher than that of the pristine SnO2 sensors. The synergistically enhanced sensing properties of CeO2-SnO2 nanohybrid-based sensors were discussed from the viewpoint of the CeO2-SnO2 n-n heterojunction and the effect of oxygen vacancies. Furthermore, the SnO2-CeO2 nanoheterojunction showed luminescence centers and prolonged electron-hole recombination, thereby resulting in quenching of luminescence in the presence of arsenate ions. The photoluminescence of CeO2-SnO2 is sensitive to the arsenate ion concentration in water and can be used for sensing arsenate with a limit of detection of 4.5 ppb in a wide linear range of 0 to 100 ppb.

Project description:This research presents the novel synthesis of CeO2 nanostructures (NSs) doped with a fixed amount of capping agent (polyacrylic acid-PAA) and different concentrations (0.01 and 0.03) of silver (Ag). This work aimed to examine the catalytic and antibacterial efficacy with evidential molecular docking analysis of Ag/PAA doped CeO2. Systematic characterization was used to analyze the effect of Ag and a capping agent on crystal structure, morphology, absorbance wavelength, and the exciton recombination rate of CeO2. The silver metal and capping agent (PAA) were added into CeO2 to reduce the size of NSs, enhancing the catalytic efficacy. These binary dopants (Ag-PAA) based CeO2 revealed remarkable results for catalytic de-colorization of rhodamine B dye and antimicrobial potential as the dopants provide more active sites. Notably, (0.03) Ag/PAA doped CeO2 NSs exhibited a substantial catalytic reduction (98.9%) of rhodamine B dye in an acidic medium. The higher doped CeO2 revealed a significant inhibition zone (3.75 mm) against Escherichia coli at maximal concentration. Furthermore, in silico docking showed the possible inhibitory impact of produced nanomaterials on the fatty acid biosynthesis enzymes FabI and FabH.

Project description:This work comprises the shape- and facet-dependent catalytic efficacies of different morphologies of CeO2, namely, hexagonal, rectangular, and square. The formation of different shapes of CeO2 is controlled using polyvinyl pyrrolidone as a surfactant. The surface reactivity of formation of differently exposed CeO2 facets is thoroughly investigated using UV-visible, photoluminescence, Raman, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. A correlation between the growth of a surface-reactive facet and the corresponding oxygen vacancies is also established. Considering the tremendous contamination, caused by the textile effluents, the present study articulates the facet-dependent photocatalytic activities of pristine CeO2 for complete degradation of methylene blue within 175 min. The observed degradation time deploying pristine CeO2 as a catalyst is the shortest to be reported in the literature to our best knowledge.

Project description:Heterostructures developed using CeO2 show promising peculiarities in the field of metal oxide gas sensors due to the great variations in the resistance during the adsorption and desorption processes. NiO decorated CeO2 nanostructures (NiO/CeO2) were synthesized via a facile two-step process. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) results revealed the perfect decoration of NiO on the CeO2 surface. The porous nature of the NiO/CeO2 sensor surface was confirmed from scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. Gas sensing studies of pristine CeO2 and NiO/CeO2 sensors were performed under room conditions and enhanced gas sensing properties for the NiO/CeO2 sensor towards isopropanol were observed. Decoration of NiO on the CeO2 surface develops a built-in potential at the interface of NiO and CeO2 which played a vital role in the superior sensing performance of the NiO/CeO2 sensor. Sharp response and recovery times (15 s/19 s) were observed for the NiO/CeO2 sensor towards 100 ppm isopropanol at room temperature. Long-term stability of the NiO/CeO2 sensor was also studied and discussed. From all the results it is concluded that the decoration of NiO on the CeO2 surface could significantly enhance the sensing performance and it has great advantages in designing best performing isopropanol gas sensors.

Project description:CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) have been well demonstrated as an antioxidant in protecting against oxidative stress-induced cellular damages and a potential therapeutic agent for various diseases thanks to their redox enzyme-mimicking activities. The Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and oxygen vacancies on the surface have been considered as the major originations responsible for the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of CeO2 NPs. Herein, CeO2 nanostructures (nanocubes and nanorods) exposed different facets were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. The characterizations by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and UV-Vis spectroscopy show that the Ce3+/Ce4+ ratio and oxygen vacancy content on the surfaces of as-synthesized CeO2 nanostructures are nearly at the same levels. Meanwhile, the enzymatic activity measurements indicate that the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of as-synthesized CeO2 nanostructures are greatly dependent on their exposed facets. CeO2 nanocubes with exposed {100} facets exhibit a higher peroxidase but lower superoxide dismutase activity than those of the CeO2 nanorods with exposed {110} facets. Our results provide new insights into the redox enzyme-mimicking activities of CeO2 nanostructures, as well as the design and synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials-based artificial enzymes.

Project description:Precise manipulation of the reactive site spatial distribution in plasmonic metal/semiconductor photocatalysts is crucial to their photocatalytic performance, but the construction of Janus nanostructures through symmetry-breaking synthesis remains a significant challenge. Here we demonstrate a synthetic strategy for the selective growth of a CeO2 semi-shell on Au nanospheres (NSs) to fabricate Janus Au NS/CeO2 nanostructures with the assistance of a SiO2 hard template and autoredox reaction between Ag+ ions and a ceria precursor. The obtained Janus nanostructures possess a spatially separated architecture and exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance toward N2 photofixation under visible-light illumination. In this scenario, N2 molecules are reduced by hot electrons on the CeO2 semi-shell, while hole scavengers are consumed by hot holes on the exposed Au NS surface, greatly promoting the charge carrier separation. Moreover, the exposed Au NS surface in the Janus structures offers an additional opportunity for the fabrication of ternary Janus noble metal/Au NS/CeO2 nanostructures. This work highlights the genuine superiority of the spatially separated nanoarchitectures in the photocatalytic reaction, offering instructive guidance for the design and construction of novel plasmonic photocatalysts.

Project description:Two-dimensional metal oxide pseudocapacitors are promising candidates for size-sensitive applications. However, they exhibit limited energy densities and inferior power densities. Here, we present an electrodeposition technique by which ultrathin CeO2-x films with controllable volumetric oxygen vacancy concentrations can be produced. This technique offers a layer-by-layer fabrication route for ultrathin CeO2-x films that render Ce3+ concentrations as high as ~60 at% and a volumetric capacitance of 1873 F cm-3, which is among the highest reported to the best of our knowledge. This exceptional behaviour originates from both volumetric oxygen vacancies, which enhance electron conduction, and intercrystallite water, which promotes proton conduction. Consequently, simultaneous charging on the surface and in the bulk occur, leading to the observation of redox pseudocapacitive behaviour in CeO2-x. Thermodynamic investigations reveal that the energy required for oxygen vacancy formation can be reduced significantly by proton-assisted reactions. This cyclic deposition technique represents an efficient method to fabricate metal oxides of precisely controlled defect concentrations and thicknesses.

Project description:Transamidation reactions catalyzed by boronic acid derivatives and metal catalysts are well known nevertheless their requirement for elevated temperatures and long reaction times were considered major obstacles in converting amides to N-alkyl amides with the coupling of primary amides and amines. The acidic-basic co-existence of ceria nanoparticles is considered a perfect choice for different catalytic activities. Mesoporous silica on the other hand is well known for its use as a supporting material for catalysts owing to its excellent characteristics like large surface area, good absorption capacity, and high-temperature stability. The SiO2-CeO2 hybrid nanocomposite was prepared by solvothermal route followed by annealing and the formation of the catalyst was confirmed by XRD, EDX, FTIR, and TEM characterization techniques. The hybrid catalyst shows high catalytic activity towards transamidation reaction at very low temperatures and in solvent-free conditions compared to pure ceria nanoparticles. The SiO2-CeO2 catalyst showed more than 99% selectivity and a remarkable catalytic activity of above 90% for the conversion of N-heptyl amine with acetamide to N-heptyl acetamide at a very low temperature of 120 °C for 3 hours. Furthermore, the catalyst remains stable and active for repeated catalytic cycles. It established 80% catalytic activity even after 4 repeated cycles making it suitable for multiple-time usages.

Project description:Exploring new and high efficiency mimic enzymes is a vital and novel strategy for antibacterial application. Haloperoxidase-like enzymes have attracted wide attention thanks to their amazing catalytic property for hypohalous acid generation from hydrogen peroxide and halides. However, few materials have displayed halogenating catalytic performance until now. Herein, we synthesized N-doped C/CeO2 (N-C/CeO2) composite materials by a combination of the liquid and solid-state method. N-C/CeO2 can possess haloperoxidase-like catalytic activity by catalyzing the bromination of organic signaling compounds (phenol red) with H2O2 at a wide range of temperatures (20 °C to 55 °C), with a solution color changing from yellow to blue. Meanwhile, it exhibits high catalytic stability/recyclability in the catalytic reaction. The synthesized N-C/CeO2 composite can effectively catalyze the oxidation of Br- with H2O2 to produce HBrO without the presence of phenol red. The produced HBrO can resist typical marine bacteria like Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study provides an efficient biomimetic haloperoxidase and a novel sustainable method for antibacterial application.

Project description:Removal of dye pollutants from wastewater is among the most important emerging needs in environmental science and engineering. The main objective of our work is to develop new magnetic core-shell nanostructures and explore their use for potential removal of pollutants from water using an external magnetic field. Herein, we have prepared magnetic core-shell nanoparticles that demonstrated excellent dye pollutant adsorbent properties. These nanoparticles are composed of a manganese ferrite magnetic core coated with silica, to protect the core and enable further functionalisation, then finally coated with ceria, which is shown to be an effective adsorbent. The magnetic core-shell nanostructures have been synthesized by a modification of solvothermal synthesis. The nanoparticles were fully characterised at each stage of the synthesis by powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). These particles were found to be effective in removing methylene blue (MB) dye from water, which was validated by UV-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy. These particles can be quickly removed from solution using a permanent magnet and then can be recycled after being placed in the furnace at 400 °C to burn off any organic residues. The particles were found to retain their ability to adsorb the pollutant after several cycles and TEM images of the particles after several cycles showed no change in the morphology. This research demonstrated the capacity of magnetic core-shell nanostructures to be used for water remediation.
