Excellent Antibacterial Properties of Silver/Silica-Chitosan/Polyvinyl Alcohol Transparent Film.

ABSTRACT: Transparent films with excellent antibacterial properties and strong mechanical properties are highly sought after in packaging applications. In this study, Ag/SiO₂ nanoparticles were introduced into a mixed solution of chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and a Ag/SiO₂-CS-PVA transparent film was developed. The excellent properties of the film were confirmed by light transmittance, water contact angle tests and tensile tests. In addition, for the antibacterial test, the antibacterial properties of the sample against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) were explored, and the average size of the bacteriostatic circle was measured by the cross method. The final results show that Ag/SiO₂-CS-PVA transparent film has the advantages of good antibacterial properties, high transparency and high mechanical strength.

Development of a flexible film made of polyvinyl alcohol with chitosan based thermosensitive hydrogel.

Project description:Background/purposeA challenge that arises with periodontal regeneration surgery has been associated with the future development of periodontal regeneration membrane to prevent gingiva and fibroblasts invade the wound and allow alveolar bone successfully regenerated.Materials and methodsChitosan (CS) has the advantages of non-toxicity, biodegradation, biocompatibility, and has been widely used in wound dressings. A flexible film was made using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blending CS based thermosensitive hydrogel.ResultsThe proposed 2% PVA/CS hydrogel has the highest swelling ratio about 720% after 60 min incubation and keeps its area after 10 min incubation for surgery suture. The elastic modulus of 0%, 1%, 2%, and 4% PVA/CS hydrogel were 7.75 ± 1.96, 0.91 ± 0.16, 0.75 ± 0.21, and 0.37 ± 0.06 MPa, respectively. The maximum strain of 2% PVA/CS hydrogel was 101.00 ± 28.03 (%). After 8 weeks biodegradation, the remain weight of 2% PVA/CS hydrogel was 71.36 ± 0.79 (%).ConclusionIn vitro cytotoxicity tests were performed and demonstrated PVA/CS hydrogel significantly improving cell proliferation. This study realized a promising flexible film for periodontal regeneration membrane that can prevent the rapid growth of fibroblasts to invade the wound and be used for periodontal regeneration surgery.

Enhancement of Antibacterial Performance of Silver Nanowire Transparent Film by Post-Heat Treatment.

Project description:Silver nanomaterials (AgNMs) have been applied as antibacterial agents to combat bacterial infections that can cause disease and death. The antibacterial activity of AgNMs can be improved by increasing the specific surface area, so significant efforts have been devoted to developing various bottom-up synthesis methods to control the size and shape of the particles. Herein, we report on a facile heat-treatment method that can improve the antibacterial activity of transparent silver nanowire (AgNW) films in a size-controllable, top-down manner. AgNW films were fabricated via spin-coating and were then heated at different temperatures (230 and 280 °C) for 30 min. The morphology and the degree of oxidation of the as-fabricated AgNW film were remarkably sensitive to the heat-treatment temperature, while the transparency was insensitive. As the heat-treatment temperature increased, the AgNWs spontaneously broke into more discrete wires and droplets, and oxidation proceeded faster. The increase in the heat-treatment temperature further increased the antibacterial activity of the AgNW film, and the heat treatment at 280 °C improved the antibacterial activity from 31.7% to 94.7% for Staphylococcus aureus, and from 57.0% to 98.7% for Escherichia coli. Following commonly accepted antibacterial mechanisms of AgNMs, we present a correlation between the antibacterial activity and surface observations of the AgNW film.

Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan and Polyvinyl Alcohol/Ag@MOF Bilayer Hydrogel for Tissue Engineering Applications.

Project description:In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol/Ag-Metal-organic framework (PVA/Ag@MOF) and polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) were used as the inner and outer layers to successfully prepare a bilayer composite hydrogel for tissue engineering scaffold. The performance of bilayer hydrogels was evaluated. The outer layer (PVA/CS) has a uniform pore size distribution, good water retention, biocompatibility and cell adhesion ability. The inner layer (PVA/Ag@MOF) has good antibacterial activity and poor biocompatibility. PVA, PVA/0.1%Ag@MOF, PVA/0.5%Ag@MOF, and PVA/1.0%Ag@MOF show anti-microbial activity in ascending order. However, its use as an inner layer avoids direct contact with cells and prevents infection. The cell viability of all samples was above 90%, indicating that the bilayer hydrogel was non-toxic to A549 cells. The bilayer hydrogel scaffold combines the advantages of the inner and outer layers. In summary, this new bilayer composite is an ideal lung scaffold for tissue engineering.

Chitosan-Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanocomposites for Regenerative Therapy.

Project description:Tissue accidents provide numerous pathways for pathogens to invade and flourish, causing additional harm to the host tissue while impeding its natural healing and regeneration. Essential oils (EOs) exhibit rapid and effective antimicrobial properties without promoting bacterial resistance. Clove oils (CEO) demonstrate robust antimicrobial activity against different pathogens. Chitosan (CS) is a natural, partially deacetylated polyamine widely recognized for its vast antimicrobial capacity. In this study, we present the synthesis of four membrane formulations utilizing CS, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and glycerol (Gly) incorporated with CEO and nanobioglass (n-BGs) for applications in subdermal tissue regeneration. Our analysis of the membranes' thermal stability and chemical composition provided strong evidence for successfully blending polymers with the entrapment of the essential oil. The incorporation of the CEO in the composite was evidenced by the increase in the intensity of the band of C-O-C in the FTIR; furthermore, the increase in diffraction peaks, as well as the broadening, provide evidence that the introduction of CEO perturbed the crystal structure. The morphological examination conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the incorporation of CEO resulted in smooth surfaces, in contrast to the porous morphologies observed with the n-BGs. A histological examination of the implanted membranes demonstrated their biocompatibility and biodegradability, particularly after a 60-day implantation period. The degradation process of more extensive membranes involved connective tissue composed of type III collagen fibers, blood vessels, and inflammatory cells, which supported the reabsorption of the composite membranes, evidencing the material's biocompatibility.

Preparation and Characterization of Eco-Friendly Transparent Antibacterial Starch/Polyvinyl Alcohol Materials for Use as Wound-Dressing.

Project description:In this study, eco-friendly and transparent starch-based/polyvinyl alcohol/citric acid composite films are evaluated for their efficacy as wound dressing materials. The starch/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) materials with added citric acid (0.46-1.83 wt%) and glycerol were made and handled based on the modified casting method. This new formulation decreases the amount of PVA used in the conventional preparation method. Citric acid ensures an appropriate antibacterial environment for wound-dressing materials. The mechanical, chemical, and surface morphological properties of such films were assessed and analyzed by tensile strength tests, UV-Vis spectrometry, swelling index, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Furthermore, the water vapor transmission (WVT) quantity was measured for an ideal wound-healing process to investigate an optimal moisture environment around the wound bed. Moreover, the pH level of the dressings was measured to examine the possibility of bacterial growth around these starch-based films. Additionally, the films' in-vitro antibacterial activities were studied against the two most common Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus). The new starch-based dressings demonstrated suitable degradation, antibacterial activity, fluid absorption, and adequate mechanical strength, representing wound-dressing materials' vital features.

Synthesis and Properties of Polyimide Silica Nanocomposite Film with High Transparent and Radiation Resistance.

Project description:In order to prepare flexible glass cover sheet materials suitable for space solar cells, fluorinated diamine 2,2'-bistrifluoromethyl benzidine (TFDB) and fluorinated dianhydride 4,4' (hexafluoroisopropyl) diphthalic dianhydride (6FDA) as the monomer, polyimide (PI)/SiO2 composite film was synthesized by in situ polymerization, and the influence of coupling agent and SiO2 nanoparticle content on the film structure and properties was studied. The results show that PI synthesized from fluorine-containing monomers has better light transmittance, and the highest transmittance can reach 91.4%. The average visible light transmittance of the composite film decreases with the increase of SiO2 content, and the transmittance of the film decreases less in the high-wavelength region and greatly decreases in the low-wavelength region. The tensile strength and elastic modulus of PI/SiO2 composite film increase with the increase of SiO2 content, first increase and then decrease, reaching the maximum when the content is 10%; while the elongation at break of the composite film gradually increases with the increase of SiO2 content reduce. The thermal stability of PI/SiO2 composite film increases with the increase of SiO2 content. The doping of nano-SiO2 significantly suppresses the influence of irradiation on the mechanical properties of the film.

Resistive switching effect and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles embedded-polyvinyl alcohol film.

Project description:In this study, the memory device of iron oxide (IO) nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) demonstrates the bipolar resistive switching characteristics under an external electric field. The phase and magnetic properties of iron oxide nanoparticles change corresponding to its resistive states. At the high resistance state (HRS) of device, iron oxide nanoparticles are primarily in Fe2O3 phase and the ferromagnetism behavior is observed. In contrast, the iron oxide nanoparticles clustered by the bridging oxygen vacancies lead to mainly Fe3O4 phase and no hysteresis magnetic curve is observed at the low resistance state (LRS) of device. The results reveal that oxygen vacancies/ions in nanoparticles notably influence the resistance and magnetic behavior of nanocomposite thin films. Our study indicated that the magnetic NPs is high potential of multi-dimensional storage fields.

Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan/Polyhexamethylene Biguanide Phase Separation System: A Potential Topical Antibacterial Formulation with Enhanced Antimicrobial Effect.

Project description:An aqueous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/chitosan (CHT)/polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) blends (PVA/CHT/PHMB blends) has been developed as a potential low dose topical antibacterial formulation with enhanced antimicrobial effect. The preparation of PVA/CHT/PHMB blends was quite facilely, with just dissolved PVA, CHT, PHMB in water in order. There was the aggregates with 100 nm size around induced by phase separation in the blends and an aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) formed, as non-ionic polymer PVA formed a continuous phase and cationic polymer CHT and PHMB formed dispersed phases. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of PHMB in the PVA/CHT/PHMB blends was 0.5?g/mL, which was four times lower than the MIC of PHMB individually. A phase separation increased zeta potential mechanism was proposed to explain the enhanced antibacterial activities. In addition, the blends could easily form film on the skin surface with good water vapor permeability and be used as a liquid bandage to accelerate the scratch wound healing process of nude mouse. These findings provide experimental evidence that the PHMB-functionalized blends could be further explored as low-dose topical antibacterial formulations, and the nano-sized phase separation strategy could be used to design novel low-dose topical antibacterial formulations with an enhanced antimicrobial effect.

Electrospun Chitosan/Polylactic Acid Nanofibers with Silver Nanoparticles: Structure, Antibacterial, and Cytotoxic Properties.

Project description:Electrospinning, a technique for creating fabric materials from polymer solutions, is widely used in various fields, including biomedicine. The unique properties of electrospun fibrous membranes, such as large surface area, compositional versatility, and customizable porous structure, make them ideal for advanced biomedical applications like tissue engineering and wound healing. By considering the high biocompatibility and well-known regenerative potential of polylactic acid (PLA) and chitosan (CH), as well as the versatile antibacterial effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this study explores the antibacterial efficacy, adhesive properties, and cytotoxicity of electrospun chitosan membranes with a unique nanofibrous structure and varying concentrations of AgNPs. Silver nanoparticles incorporated at concentrations of 25-50 μg/mL or above significantly enhanced the antibacterial effectiveness, especially against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Biocompatibility assessments using umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells demonstrated the nontoxic nature of the membranes with an AgNP concentration of 12.5 μg/mL, underscoring their potential for biomedical applications. This study provides valuable insights into developing electrospun chitosan membranes as effective antimicrobial coatings for various biomedical uses, including wound healing patches and tissue engineering constructs for soft tissue replacement.

Bio-inspired semi-transparent silver nanowire conductor based on a vein network with excellent electromechanical and photothermal properties.

Project description:A bio-inspired conductive binary-network of vein-silver nanowires (AgNWs) was embedded in poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) to prepare a semi-transparent stretchable conductor (vein-AgNWs-PDMS) by a simple dipping process. The special conductive structure was constructed by using veins with a porous structure as an ideal skeleton to load AgNW networks, which allowed the vein-AgNWs-PDMS composite to show a low sheet resistance of 1 Ω sq-1 with 74% transmittance. The figure of merit of vein-AgNWs-PDMS is as high as 2502 and can be adjusted easily by controlling the times of the dipping cycle. Furthermore, the vein-AgNWs-PDMS conductor can retain high conductivity after 150% mechanical elongation and exhibit excellent electromechanical stability in repeated stretch/release tests with 60% strain (500 cycles). As an example of an application, patterned light-emitting diode (LED) arrays using the vein-AgNWs-PDMS conductors have been fabricated, and worked well under deformation. Moreover, the photo-thermal properties of the vein-AgNWs-PDMS composite have been demonstrated by a position heating experiment using near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and the generated heat can be effectively dissipated through the vein network to avoid local overheating. Due to the high-performance and facile fabrication process, the vein-AgNWs-PDMS conductors will have multifunctional applications in stretchable electronic devices.
