The home robot-based child activity service aims to cultivate children's social emotions. A design theme was produced by interviewing child development experts and parents. Project description:BackgroundGlobally, pressure is increasing on health and social care resources due to the aging population and growing prevalence of dementia. Companion robots, such as Paro, demonstrate strong potential for helping reduce this pressure through reported benefits including reduced agitation, depression, loneliness, care provider burden, and medication use. However, we previously identified that user-centered design of robot pets is both essential and understudied. We observed that commonly used robot pets are poorly matched to end-user requirements, and that end users and developers of robot pets differ significantly in their perception of appropriate design. This may explain some of the contradictory outcome research and variance in results for robot pets, such as Paro.ObjectiveIn response to the literature gap, we aimed to provide user-centered insights into the design of robot pets from key stakeholders to inform future robot development and the choice of robots for real-world implementation and research. We focused on understanding user requirements.MethodsWe conducted a qualitative study with 65 participants from 5 care homes (26 care home residents, 29 staff members. and 10 family members). Care home residents formed groups of between 3 and 4 individuals and experienced free interactions with a range of 8 companion robots and toys, including Paro and more affordable alternatives. The robots provided had a range of esthetics, shell types, interactivity levels, and designs for comparison. Care staff and family members observed the interactions. All participants then engaged in focus groups within their stakeholder category to discuss preferences and user requirements in companion robot design. Both free interactions and focus groups were video and audio recorded, transcribed, and subjected to thematic analysis.ResultsCare home residents, family members, and staff were open and accepting of the use of companion robot pets, with the majority suggesting that they would keep a device for themselves or the residents. The most preferred device was the Joy for All cat, followed by the Joy for All dog. In discussions, the preferred design features included familiar animal embodiment (domestic pet), soft fur, interactivity, big appealing eyes, simulated breathing, and movements. Unfamiliar devices were more often seen as toy-like and suitable for children, producing some negative responses.ConclusionsThis work provides important and user-centered insights into future robot designs for care home residents by means of a comprehensive comparison with key stakeholders. This work strongly supports the use of familiar embodiment in future robot pet designs, with domestic cat and dog morphologies appearing most acceptable. The results have implications for future robot designs and the selection of robot pets for both research and real-world implementations.

Project description:Everywhere there are children, there are screens, and child-computer interaction is ubiquitous. Despite their omnipresence, research on the impact of screens on children's learning lags behind the development of digital tools. Apple's App Store has an abundance of "educational" apps, but many of these apps' claims are unsubstantiated. Organizations responsible for vetting quality products for young people, such as the American Library Association, are developing resources to help identify the best digital products available, but they remain difficult to find, and there is limited guidance for app designers when it comes to designing apps for younger audiences. Our interdisciplinary, empirical study was inspired by "co-creation" (Sanders and Stappers, 2008) and "cooperative inquiry" (Druin, 2005). Starting with a seed grant from Kent State University's College of Communication and Information, our team sought to create a high-quality and inclusive alphabet app with haptic interactions and simplified gamification to reinforce the basic letter writing skills of young children. The app rewards a child's successful handwriting with an animation of a verb that corresponds with the letter they traced. Concrete animations and digital and verbal demonstrations connect the typographic letter to the handwritten counterpart. Librarian Claudia Haines' rubric (Haines, 2016) and the Dig Checklist (Kidmap, 2018.) guided our definition of "quality," and children served as co-designers in two qualitative user studies. Our young designers tested prototypes, completed task booklets, and were interviewed about their preferences and their feedback informed our design. Additionally, a focus group interview with kindergarten and preschool teachers provided further feedback about the typographic design, stroke order, and gaming rewards. To be inclusive, children in both our app design and user studies were selected from a diverse pool. Our research contributes to work on co-design and cooperative inquiry in the fields of User Experience Design, human-computer interaction, human information behavior, information science, interface design, motion design, typeface design and typography for children, and early literacy development. Project description:To examine patterns of conduct problems across the home and school context, we used latent class analysis to analyze primary caregivers' and teachers' ratings on the conduct problems subscale of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (R. Goodman, 1997) in the Family Life Project (N = 1,292), a prospective study of child development in rural and small town contexts. We found a similar four-class solution at five and seven years of age. In decreasing prevalence, the following classes were identified: (1) low symptoms reported by both informants (low cross-context); (2) high parent-reported symptoms, low teacher-reported symptoms (home context); (3) low parent-reported symptoms, moderate teacher-reported symptoms (school context); and (4) high symptoms reported by both informants (high cross-context). Classes exhibited stability from age five to age seven: children were more likely to remain in the same class than to transition to a different class, and longitudinal stability was especially high for children in the low cross-context class at age 5. A number of child and family characteristics measured in early childhood (executive function, verbal ability, poverty-related risk, sensitive parenting, and parental depressive symptoms) were associated with class membership at age five and age seven, but were generally not associated with longitudinal transitions between classes.

Project description:BackgroundWorldwide, children with cerebral palsy (CP) living in underserved communities face barriers to accessing motor therapy services. This study assessed the implementation and effectiveness of an 8-week, upper limb (UL) home-based intervention with a movement-tracking videogame (Bootle Blast) in Costa Rican children with CP.MethodsChildren established a weekly playtime goal and two UL activities of daily living (ADLs) that they would like to improve on. A multiple-baseline, single-case experimental design, was used with the Performance Quality Rating Scale (PQRS) as the repeated measure to track changes in performance of the selected ADLs between the baseline (usual care) and intervention (Bootle Blast) phases. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM), the Box and Blocks Test (BBT) and the Children's Hand-Use Experience Questionnaire (CHEQ) were collected before and after the intervention. Technical barriers were documented during weekly video calls with a monitoring therapist. Treatment effect size, slope changes and percentage of non-overlapping data were identified for the PQRS. Descriptive statistics summarized results for the BBT, CHEQ, videogame logs (e.g., playtime) and technical barriers.ResultsFifteen children participated and 13 completed the intervention. Both participants who dropped out did so after completing baseline assessments, but before experiencing Bootle Blast. Children's mean active playtime (i.e., mini-games targeting the UL) across the 8-weeks was 377 min, while mean total time spent engaging with Bootle Blast (active + passive play time [e.g., time navigating menus, reviewing rewards]) was 728 min. In total, eight technical issues (from five children) were reported, and all but three were resolved within 48 h. Partial effectiveness was associated with the intervention. Specifically, 85% of participants improved on the PQRS and 69% achieved clinically important improvements ≥ 2 points in performance on the COPM. Children improved by 1.8 blocks on average on the BBT, while on the CHEQ, five children had a clinically important increase of 10% of the total number of UL activities performed with both hands.ConclusionBootle Blast is a feasible and effective option to facilitate access and engage children with cerebral palsy in UL home rehabilitation. Project description:Objective This study explores the postacute-stroke management problems, particularly for patients with total dependency (Barthel Index <20), in home care service of Dr. Sardjito Hospital (SH) from the hospital personnel's and caregiver's points of view. Materials and Methods In-depth interviews with a semi-structured interview guide were conducted with hospital personnel and patients' caregivers based on the purposeful sampling. There were 10 hospital personnel that were interviewed: the director of medical service, head of home care unit, neurologists, general practitioners, nurses, and physiotherapist. There were eight caregivers who participated in the study. Statistical Analysis Data from the interviews were analyzed using systematic text condensation using Nvivo 12 plus. Results Our findings showed that all health personnel in SH agreed that home care service is a part of an integrated health care service for continuation of care. However, the preparedness by the hospital management is still lacking in infrastructures, such as standardized operational procedure, quality control, and financial system, as well as in terms of competent human resources and their welfare. In addition, the patient's family and caregiver are lacking in knowledge and independency to take care of the patients with the need of home care services' monitoring to deliver the expected home care for postacute-stroke's patient regularly. Conclusion Home care service is an act of implementing hospital obligation to fulfill the patients' rights. An established hospital policy to ensure a comprehensive home care service delivery is necessary. The capability and welfare of the health care personnel should be put into account for the standardized human resources.

Project description:BACKGROUND: The patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model aims to provide patient-centered care, lower costs, and improve health outcomes. Medical students have not been meaningfully integrated in this model. AIM: To test the feasibility of a longitudinal clerkship based on PCMH principles and anchored by PCMH educational objectives. SETTING: Two community-based family medicine clinics, one academic internal medicine clinic, and one pediatric clinic affiliated with an urban medical school. PARTICIPANTS: 56 medical student volunteers. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: We embedded student teams in existing faculty practices and recruited a high-risk patient panel for each team. Clinical education occurred through a traditional clinic preceptor model and was augmented by 3rd and 4th year students directly observing 1st and 2nd year students. Didactic content included monthly Grand Rounds conferences. PROGRAM EVALUATION: Students attended 699 clinics, recruited 273 continuity patients, and participated in 9 Grand Rounds conferences. Student confidence with PCMH principles increased and attitudes regarding continuity were highly positive. "Continuity," "early clinical exposure," and "peer teaching" were the most powerful themes expressed by students. Faculty response to the pilot was highly positive. DISCUSSION: An Education-Centered Medical Home (ECMH) is feasible and is highly rated by students and faculty. Expansion of this model is underway.

Project description:Firms use robots to deliver an ever-expanding range of services. However, as service failures are common, service recovery actions are necessary to prevent user churn. This research further suggests that firms need to know how to design service robots that avoid alienating users in case of service failures. Robust evidence across two experiments demonstrates that users attribute successful service outcomes internally, while robot-induced service failures are blamed on the firm (and not the robot), confirming the well-known self-serving bias. While this external attributional shift occurs regardless of the robot design (i.e., it is the same for warm vs. competent robots), the findings imply that service recovery minimizes the undesirable external shift and that this effect is particularly pronounced for warm robots. For practitioners, this implies prioritizing service robots with a warm design for maximizing user retention for either type of service outcome (i.e., success, failure, and failure with recovery). For theory, this work demonstrates that attribution represents a meaningful mechanism to explain the proposed relationships.Supplementary informationThe online version contains supplementary material available at 10.1007/s12525-022-00613-4.

Project description:The current study examined whether within-family changes in child care quality and quantity predicted subsequent changes in home environment quality and maternal depression across early childhood (6 to 54 months of age). Data were drawn from the NICHD Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development (n = 1239; 77% White; 48% female; data collection from 1991 to 1996), and were analyzed using Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Models. Within-family increases in child care quality predicted modest increases in home environment quality (β = .13-.17). These effects were most robust from child age 6 to 15 months. Increases in child care quality produced small, statistically non-significant, reductions in depression. Time-specific increases in child care quantity were not consistently predictive of either outcome.

Project description:Background/objectivesFamily-centered care (FCC) is the recommended model for pediatric inpatient care. Our overall aim was to conduct a narrative synthesis of the contemporary published research on the effectiveness of FCC interventions for pediatric inpatients. Our specific objective was to critique studies of inpatient pediatric FCC interventions that evaluated child or parent outcomes.MethodsWe searched five databases (Pubmed, CINAHL, Embase, PsychInfo, and Web of Science) for peer-reviewed research published from 1 January 2017 to 6 February 2024. Independent reviewers evaluated each study based on pre-specified inclusion and exclusion criteria, then extracted and narratively synthesized the data.ResultsWe found 16 studies of 15 interventions conducted in six countries. The studies were quantitative (n = 11), qualitative (n = 3), and mixed methods (n = 2), with most designs being of low to moderate quality based on a modified Mixed-Methods Appraisal Tool. Interventions included family-centered rounds, parent-focused health information technology, education, patient navigation, parent-peer support, partnership, and parent participation in caregiving. Most studies found significant improvements in parents' well-being, knowledge, and participation, as well as decreased stress and anxiety with the FCC interventions compared to usual care. One study found no differences in child outcomes (infant feeding, length of stay) between usual care and a parent-participation intervention.ConclusionsAlthough FCC interventions led to many improved outcomes for parents, there were few well-designed comparison studies using validated tools and well-defined interventions. Higher quality research is needed to promote greater uptake and sustainability of FCC interventions globally.

Project description:BackgroundAudit and feedback (A&F), the summary and provision of clinical performance data, is a common quality improvement strategy. Successful design and implementation of A&F-or any quality improvement strategy-should incorporate evidence-informed best practices as well as context-specific end user input.ObjectiveWe used A&F theory and user-centered design to inform the development of a web-based primary care A&F dashboard. We describe the design process and how it influenced the design of the dashboard.MethodsOur design process included 3 phases: prototype development based on A&F theory and input from clinical improvement leaders; workshop with family physician quality improvement leaders to develop personas (ie, fictional users that represent an archetype character representative of our key users) and application of those personas to design decisions; and user-centered interviews with family physicians to learn about the physician's reactions to the revised dashboard.ResultsThe team applied A&F best practices to the dashboard prototype. Personas were used to identify target groups with challenges and behaviors as a tool for informed design decision-making. Our workshop produced 3 user personas, Dr Skeptic, Frazzled Physician, and Eager Implementer, representing common users based on the team's experience of A&F. Interviews were conducted to further validate findings from the persona workshop and found that (1) physicians were interested in how they compare with peers; however, if performance was above average, they were not motivated to improve even if gaps compared to other standards in their care remained; (2) burnout levels were high as physicians are trying to catch up on missed care during the pandemic and are therefore less motivated to act on the data; and (3) additional desired features included integration within the electronic medical record, and more up-to-date and accurate data.ConclusionsWe found that carefully incorporating data from user interviews helped operationalize generic best practices for A&F to achieve an acceptable dashboard that could meet the needs and goals of physicians. We demonstrate such a design process in this paper. A&F dashboards should address physicians' data skepticism, present data in a way that spurs action, and support physicians to have the time and capacity to engage in quality improvement work; the steps we followed may help those responsible for quality improvement strategy implementation achieve these aims.
