The amorphization of crystalline silicon by ball milling.

ABSTRACT: The transformation of crystalline silicon to amorphous silicon during ball milling was quantitatively measured by x-ray diffraction and electrochemical methods. Amorphous silicon was found to form rapidly from the very initial stages of ball milling. Simultaneously, the grain size of the crystalline silicon phase decreased. Under extended milling times it was found that a maximum of 86 % of the silicon became amorphous. Similarly, the grain size of the crystalline silicon phase could not be reduced below 6 nm. This transformation followed an Avrami kinetic model, which is consistent with a system which reaches a steady state. These observations suggest a mechanism in which ball milling generates defects, resulting in silicon amorphization and grain size reduction, where the degree of amorphization is limited in extent because there exists a limiting silicon grain size below which defects are no longer formed.

Ball milling induced borophene flakes fabrication.

Project description:To fill the knowledge gap for borophene, as the youngest member of the two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials family, a facile, cost effective, scalable and reproducible fabrication route is still strongly required. Among so far studied techniques the potential of pure mechanical processes such as ball milling is not explored yet. Therefore, in this contribution, we explore the efficiency to exfoliate bulk boron into a few-layered borophene induced by mechanical energy in the planetary ball mill. It was revealed that the resulting flakes thickness and distribution can be controlled by (i) rotation speed (250-650 rpm), (ii) time of ball-milling (1-12 hours), and mass loading of bulk boron (1-3 g). Furthermore, the optimal conditions for the ball-milling process to induce efficient mechanical exfoliation of boron were determined to be 450 rpm, 6 hours, and 1 g (450 rpm_6 h_1 g), which resulted in the fabrication of regular and thin few-layered borophene flakes (∼5.5 nm). What is more, the mechanical energy induced during ball-milling, and the heat generated inside, affected the structure of borophene resulting in different crystalline phases. Besides being an additional and interesting discovery, it will also open up opportunities to investigate the relevance between the properties and the emerging phase. Structures labeled as β-rhombohedral, γ-orthorhombic, τ-B and the conditions under which they appear, have been described. Therefore, in our study, we open a new door to obtain a bulk quantity of few-layered borophene for further fundamental studies and practical potential assessment.

A Ball-Milling-Enabled Reformatsky Reaction.

Project description:An operationally simple one-jar one-step mechanochemical Reformatsky reaction using in situ generated organozinc intermediates under neat grinding conditions has been developed. Notable features of this reaction protocol are that it requires no solvent, no inert gases, and no pre-activation of the bulk zinc source. The developed process is demonstrated to have good substrate scope (39-82 % yield) and is effective irrespective of the initial morphology of the zinc source.

Effect of Ball-Milling on Starch Crystalline Structure, Gelatinization Temperature, and Rheological Properties: Towards Enhanced Utilization in Thermosensitive Systems.

Project description:Starch's crystalline structure and gelatinization temperature might facilitate or hinder its use. Ball milling has frequently been mentioned in the literature as a method for reducing starch size and as a more environmentally friendly way to change starch, such as by increasing surface area and reactivity, which has an impact on other starch properties. In this study, starch samples were milled for varying durations (1, 5, 10, 20, and 30 h) and at different starch-to-ball mass ratios (1:6 and 1:20). Microscopy and XRD revealed that prolonged milling resulted in effective fragmentation and a decrease in crystallinity of the starch granules. Increasing milling times resulted in an increase in amylose content. Rheology and thermal studies revealed that gelatinization temperatures dropped with milling duration and that viscosity and thixotropy were directly influenced. The samples milled for 10, 20, and 30 h at a ratio of 1:20 were the most fragmented and upon drying formed a transparent film at ambient temperature, because of the lower gelatinization temperature. Starch ball milling could lead to the use of this material in thermosensitive systems.

Edge-carboxylated graphene nanosheets via ball milling.

Project description:Low-cost, high-yield production of graphene nanosheets (GNs) is essential for practical applications. We have achieved high yield of edge-selectively carboxylated graphite (ECG) by a simple ball milling of pristine graphite in the presence of dry ice. The resultant ECG is highly dispersable in various solvents to self-exfoliate into single- and few-layer (? 5 layers) GNs. These stable ECG (or GN) dispersions have been used for solution processing, coupled with thermal decarboxylation, to produce large-area GN films for many potential applications ranging from electronic materials to chemical catalysts. The electrical conductivity of a thermally decarboxylated ECG film was found to be as high as 1214 S/cm, which is superior to its GO counterparts. Ball milling can thus provide simple, but efficient and versatile, and eco-friendly (CO(2)-capturing) approaches to low-cost mass production of high-quality GNs for applications where GOs have been exploited and beyond.

The newly uncovered process has been optimized and its mechanism explored using CV measurements, radical trapping experiments, EPR spectroscopy, and solution control reactions. This unique reactivity can also be translated to solution whereupon pre-milling of the manganese is required.

Synthesis of Randomly Substituted Anionic Cyclodextrins in Ball Milling.

Project description:A number of influencing factors mean that the random substitution of cyclodextrins (CD) in solution is difficult to reproduce. Reaction assembly in mechanochemistry reduces the number of these factors. However, lack of water can improve the reaction outcomes by minimizing the reagent's hydrolysis. High-energy ball milling is an efficient, green and simple method for one-step reactions and usually reduces degradation and byproduct formation. Anionic CD derivatives have successfully been synthesized in the solid state, using a planetary ball mill. Comparison with solution reactions, the solvent-free conditions strongly reduced the reagent hydrolysis and resulted in products of higher degree of substitution (DS) with more homogeneous DS distribution. The synthesis of anionic CD derivatives can be effectively performed under mechanochemical activation without significant changes to the substitution pattern but the DS distributions were considerably different from the products of solution syntheses.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Acyl Anion Organocatalysis by Ball-Milling.

Project description:The ability to conduct N-heterocyclic carbene-catalysed acyl anion chemistry under ball-milling conditions is reported for the first time. This process has been exemplified through applications to intermolecular-benzoin, intramolecular-benzoin, intermolecular-Stetter and intramolecular-Stetter reactions including asymmetric examples and demonstrates that this mode of mechanistically complex organocatalytic reaction can operate under solvent-minimised conditions.

Grain boundary resistance to amorphization of nanocrystalline silicon carbide.

Project description:Under the C displacement condition, we have used molecular dynamics simulation to examine the effects of grain boundaries (GBs) on the amorphization of nanocrystalline silicon carbide (nc-SiC) by point defect accumulation. The results show that the interstitials are preferentially absorbed and accumulated at GBs that provide the sinks for defect annihilation at low doses, but also driving force to initiate amorphization in the nc-SiC at higher doses. The majority of surviving defects are C interstitials, as either C-Si or C-C dumbbells. The concentration of defect clusters increases with increasing dose, and their distributions are mainly observed along the GBs. Especially these small clusters can subsequently coalesce and form amorphous domains at the GBs during the accumulation of carbon defects. A comparison between displacement amorphized nc-SiC and melt-quenched single crystal SiC shows the similar topological features. At a dose of 0.55 displacements per atom (dpa), the pair correlation function lacks long range order, demonstrating that the nc-SiC is fully amorphilized.

Mechanochemical borylation of aryldiazonium salts; merging light and ball milling.

Project description:Merging of photo- and mechanochemical activation permitted studying the role of eosin Y in the borylation of aryldiazonium salts in a ball mill. Simultaneous neat grinding/irradiation of the reactants and the photocatalyst led to the formation of boronates in a molten state. On the other hand, the catalyst-free liquid-assisted grinding/irradiation reaction also led to product formation, featuring a direct photolysis pathway facilitated by substrate-solvent charge-transfer complex formation.

Expedient Organocatalytic Aza-Morita-Baylis-Hillman Reaction through Ball-Milling.
