The impact of complementary feeding education for mothers using mobile phone applications on the anthropometric indices of Iranian infants.

ABSTRACT:

Background

Maternal education is often linked to improved awareness. This study aimed to determine the impact of complementary feeding education for mothers using mobile phone applications on the anthropometric indices of Iranian infants.

Methods

This quasi-experiment study involved 86 eligible women divided into two groups-intervention (n = 43) and control (n = 43)-using a multistage sampling method. A researcher-designed questionnaire collected demographic data from parents and infants. Education was delivered through a mobile phone application. Infant anthropometric indices (weight-for-age, length-for-age, and weight-for-length) were measured before and 3 months after the intervention. Statistical analysis included independent t-tests, paired t-tests, chi-square tests (or Cochran-Armitage tests), and analysis of covariance.

Results

The mean weight-for-age Z-scores of the infants in the intervention group were significantly different before (0.07 ± 0.52) and after the intervention (0.37 ± 0.53) (p < .001), while this difference was not significant in the control group. The mean infant weight-for-length Z score in the intervention group was significantly different before (0.09 ± 0.72) and after the intervention (0.29 ± 0.63) (p = .015); however, in the control group, the difference was not statistically significant. The mean length-for-age Z score in the intervention group was significantly different before (0.12 ± 0.68) and after the intervention (0.40 ± 0.76) (p = .006). In contrast, in the control group, the mean length-for-age Z score after the intervention (-0.03 ± 0.84) decreased compared to that before the intervention (0.38 ± 0.75) (p < .001).

Conclusion

The study demonstrated that educating mothers on complementary feeding through mobile phone applications positively impacted infant anthropometric indices. Healthcare providers are encouraged to use this educational approach to prevent infant growth disorders.

Project description:BackgroundEvidence about the effects of mothers' decision-making autonomy on complementary feeding is not consistent, generating hypotheses about whether complementary feeding social support moderates the relation between mothers' decision-making autonomy and the practice of complementary feeding.ObjectivesThis study examined the moderation effect of fathers' complementary feeding support on the association of mothers' decision-making autonomy with the WHO complementary feeding indicators of minimum dietary diversity, minimum meal frequency, and minimum acceptable diet, and post hoc secondary outcomes of feeding eggs or fish the previous day. The study also examined the concordance between mothers' and fathers' perspectives of mothers' autonomy and fathers' complementary feeding support.MethodsData were from cross-sectional surveys of 495 cohabiting parents of children aged 6-23 mo enrolled in an Alive & Thrive initiative implementation research study in Kaduna State, Nigeria. Logistic regression models were used to examine moderation, and κ statistics and 95% CIs were used to assess the concordance in reported perspectives of the parents.ResultsThe moderation results show that the simple slopes for decision-making were significant for minimum meal frequency, minimum acceptable diet, and feeding children fish the previous day when fathers offered ≥2 complementary feeding support actions. There were no significant findings in the moderation models for minimum dietary diversity or feeding children eggs the previous day. The findings from the concordance tests show moderate to substantial agreement (ranging from 57.6% to 76.0%) between parents' perspectives of mothers' autonomy, and moderate to excellent agreement (ranging from 52.1% to 89.1%) between parents' perspectives of fathers' complementary feeding support.ConclusionsIn Nigeria, high levels of fathers' complementary feeding support strengthen the association of mothers' decision-making autonomy with minimum meal frequency, minimum acceptable diet, and feeding children fish the previous day.This study was registered with clinicaltrials.gov (NCT04835662).

Project description:BackgroundComplementary feeding is critical for optimal nutrition in infants and young children as it ensures their growth, health and development to attain their full potential. However, evidence shows that children from developing countries do not meet the core indicators for appropriate complementary feeding. We evaluated mothers' knowledge and attitudes regarding child feeding recommendations and the determinants of adequate diet among children aged 6-23 months.MethodsThis cross-sectional study included 200 children aged 6-23 months and their mothers/care givers recruited during child welfare clinics of two health facilities in Ghana. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire. Multivariate logistic regression was used to assess determinants of adequate diet.ResultsSixty-eight percent of the mothers knew the recommended duration of continued breastfeeding, 56.5% how to ensure dietary diversity and enrich their children's diets and 94% (n = 188) had positive attitude towards recommended infant and young child feeding practices. Majority of the mothers (92%, n = 183) practiced continued breastfeeding, 10.5% of the children met minimum diet diversity score, 39.5% minimum meal frequency and 8.5% received minimum adequate diet. Determinants of receipt of minimum adequate diet were: having high knowledge in child feeding recommendations (100% vs. 0.0, p < 0.001) and child's father reportedly earning adequate income to cater for the family (AOR = 12.1 (1.32-109.72, p = 0.027).ConclusionMotherss knowledge levels regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations had notable deficiencies although they generally had a positive attitude towards child feeding recommendations. Knowledge regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations as well as the child's father having adequate income were important determinants of adequate diet. Nutrition education should emphasize on improving mothers' nutrition knowledge regarding infant and young child feeding recommendations and supporting mothers to overcome barriers to feed their children with adequate diets.

Project description:BackgroundThis study addresses the determination of educational intervention-based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)-effectiveness on continued breastfeeding among Iranian mothers attending health centers, considering low researchers' attention to the continued breastfeeding index despite its important impact on children's health.MethodsThe present study was conducted among 230 mothers with exclusively breastfed infant (115 in the intervention group and 115 in the control group). Sampling starts with randomly selecting 12 health centers among all health centers in Karaj, Alborz province, and allocating them randomly into two equal groups of intervention and control. A study-specific questionnaire, designed in alignment with TPB, was the primary data collection tool. The intervention group received peer education, and optional additional education through a social network. Data were collected in 4 stages, including before the intervention, immediately, 3 months, and 6 months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using SPSS-16 and Independent t-test, Chi-square RMANOVA, ANCOVA, Cochran and McNemar tests.ResultsThere was a significant increase in the mean scores of attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control constructs in the intervention group and a significant decrease of those constructs was observed in the control group (p < 0.05). There was an improvement in the mean score of breastfeeding continuation behavior among intervention group mothers after intervention exposure but it was not significant (p > 0.05). There was also a significant decrease in breastfeeding and an increase in the usage of powdered milk in mothers of the control group (p < 0.05).ConclusionIt was concluded that educational interventions based on TPB by using peer group and social network can promote the behavior of continued breastfeeding. This theoretical framework can act as a road map for future development of educational interventions targeting breastfeeding continuation.
