Astrocyte tau deposition in progressive supranuclear palsy is associated with dysregulation of MAPT transcription.
Ontology highlight
ABSTRACT: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by 4R tau deposition in neurons as well as in astrocytes and oligodendrocytes. While astrocytic tau deposits are rarely observed in normal aging (so-called aging-related tau astrogliopathy, ARTAG) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), astrocytic tau in the form of tufted astrocytes is a pathognomonic hallmark of PSP. Classical biochemical experiments emphasized tau synthesis in neurons in the central nervous system, suggesting that astrocytic tau inclusions might be derived from uptake of extracellular neuronal-derived tau. However, recent single-nucleus RNAseq experiments highlight the fact that MAPT, the gene encoding tau, is also expressed by astrocytes, albeit in lower amounts. We, therefore, revisited the questi
