Project description:BackgroundRestrictions due to Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has produced a large number of effects on mental health, which are expected to endure over time. In this study, we assessed depressive symptom levels before the COVID-19 pandemic, from January 2018 to December 2019, and during the pandemic in Italy in 2020.MethodsWe used the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), which is a screening instrument devised to detect probable depression and which has been annually administered in the framework of the Italian Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System since 2008. Depressive symptoms were assessed in a sample of 41,362 18-64-year-old adults surveyed in 2018-2019 and in a sample of 14,612 adults surveyed in 2020.ResultsThe prevalence of depressive symptoms increased from 6.1% (95% CI 5.8%-6.4%) in 2018-2019 to 7.1% (95% CI 5.6%-8.6%) in March-April 2020. It then declined in May-June to 4.4% (95% CI 3.2%-5.5%) but in July-August it once again increased to 8.2% (95% CI 6.0%-10.4%) and, finally, gradually returned above the pre-lockdown level by November-December 2020 (5.9%; 95% CI 4.7%-7.1%). Compared to before the health crisis, during the pandemic, women and individuals with financial difficulties were found to have a significantly higher risk of depressive symptoms while younger, individuals with a higher education and those living in South Italy became increasingly vulnerable.ConclusionsWhile the average response to the pandemic was one of resilience over time, women and younger individuals were found to be particularly prone to the risk of depressive symptoms, as a result of the pandemic. In future investigations, the risk of individuals living in the South of Italy should also be taken into consideration.

Project description:ObjectiveTo assess whether the relationship between hearing and depressive symptoms is present among older adults classified as normal hearing (≤25 dB).DesignCross-sectional epidemiologic study (Hispanic Community Health Study).SettingUS multicentered.ParticipantsAdults ≥50 years old (n = 5,499) with normal hearing or hearing loss (HL).MeasurementsThe primary exposure was hearing, defined continuously by the 4-frequency pure-tone average threshold (dB) on audiometry. Hearing was additionally categorized into normal hearing (≤25 dB) and HL (>25 dB). The main outcome was depressive symptoms, measured with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-10 (CESD-10). Depressive symptoms were defined both continuously and binarily (where CESD-10 ≥10 was categorized as clinically significant depressive symptoms). Multivariable linear, logistic, and generalized additive modeling (GAM) regressions were performed.ResultsAmong those with normal hearing, the CESD-10 score increased by 1.04 points (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.70, 1.37) for every 10 dB decrease in hearing, adjusting for age, gender, education, cardiovascular disease, and hearing aid use. Among those with HL, the CESD-10 score increased by 0.62 points (95% CI: 0.23, 1.01) for every 10 dB decrease in hearing, adjusting for the same confounders. Similar findings were noted when the outcome was clinically significant depressive symptoms (adjusted odds ratio: 1.28 [1.14, 1.44] in normal hearing versus 1.26 [1.11, 1.44] in HL). In certain sensitivity analyses, the relationship between hearing and depressive symptoms was significantly stronger among those with normal hearing than in those with HL.ConclusionThe relationship between hearing and clinically significant depressive symptoms is present among older adults with normal hearing (<25 dB). We introduce the term subclinical HL as imperfect hearing that is classically defined as normal (1-25 dB). The relationship between hearing and late life depressive symptoms may be more sensitive than previously recognized.

Project description:AimTo assess prevalence and characteristics of vasomotor symptoms in community-dwelling Japanese women.MethodsThese were cross-sectional analyses using data from the National Institute for Longevity Sciences-Longitudinal Study of Aging. The main outcome measures were prevalence and severity of hot flashes and sweating. Associations between hot flashes/sweating (slight, moderate, or severe vs none) and sleep problems were explored using logistic regression, with and without adjustment for age, daily physical activity, and number of urinations/night. Associations between hot flashes/sweating and sleep problems, depressive symptoms, and dietary variables were explored in logistic regression models or general linear models.ResultsA total of 1152 women between 40 and 91 years of age were enrolled. Hot flashes were reported by 24.5% of participants; with prevalence and severity highest in those 50-54 years or 2-5 years postmenopause. Sleep problems were reported 15 percentage points more frequently by women who reported hot flashes than by those without hot flashes. Adjusted odds ratios [95% CI] for difficulty in falling asleep and difficulty in sleeping through were 2.09 [1.565-2.796] and 2.07 [1.549-2.763]), respectively. Also, hot flashes were associated with higher risk of depressive symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [95% CI]: 2.99 [2.07-4.32]) and lower life satisfaction, self-esteem, and self-rated health status. A similar pattern was observed in women with and without sweating. No associations were found between hot flashes and dietary factors.ConclusionsClear associations were found between hot flashes and sleeping problems, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors. Women who reported hot flashes also reported worse mental and physical health than those who did not report hot flashes.

Project description:BackgroundHearing loss can exacerbate cognitive decline; therefore, exploring the mechanisms through which hearing loss affects cognitive function is crucial. The current study aimed to investigate the impact of hearing loss on cognitive function and the mediating role played by self-rated health and depressive anxiety symptoms.MethodsUsing stratified whole-group random sampling, the study employed a cross-sectional design and included 624 participants aged ≥65 years from three communities in Urumqi, China. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Hearing function and self-rated health were determined by self-report. The 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale were used to assess depressive anxiety symptoms. Serial mediation analysis was performed using AMOS 26.0.ResultsHearing loss can not only negatively affect cognitive function in older adults directly (direct effect = -0.106; SE = 0.045; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.201 to -0.016), but also indirectly affect the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive function through self-rated health and depressive anxiety symptoms. The results of the serial mediation analysis showed that the total indirect effect of self-rated health and depressive anxiety symptoms was -0.115 (95% CI: -0.168 to -0.070), and the total effect of the model was -0.221 (95% CI: -0.307 to -0.132), with the total indirect effect accounting for 52.04% of the total effect of the model.ConclusionOur study discovered that there is a partial mediation of the relationship between hearing loss and cognitive function by self-rated health and depressive anxiety symptoms. It is suggested that by enhancing self-rated health and ensuring good mental health, the decline in cognitive function among older adults with hearing loss can be delayed.

Project description:Spargana were collected from human and frogs in Liaoning and Hubei Provinces, China. PCR amplification and direct sequencing of A cox1 fragment was PCR-amplified from genomic DNA extracted from 7 specimens (5 from humans and 2 from frogs). The cox1 fragment (390 bp) showed 97-100% similarity to the reference sequence of S. erinaceieuropaei and 88-89% to the reference sequence of S. decipiens. There were 1-12 bases different between these worms, but no obvious genetic variation (0-3.3%) to the references. There was little difference of cox1 gene between sparganum samples of humans and frogs (1-3%). This study is the first report on S. erinaceieuropaei spargana from humans in Liaoning and Hubei Provinces.

Project description:The allostatic load model has been used to quantify the physiological costs of the body's response to repeated stressful demands and may provide a useful, integrative perspective on the various correlates of late-life depressive symptoms. We interviewed 125 Rochester, NY adults, ranging in age from 67 to 94 years. We employed an allostatic load score as a measure of multisystem dysfunction in hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis function, immune function, anabolic activity, and cardiovascular activity. Overall, affective, and somatic depressive symptom scores were computed using the 20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Multiple linear regression models were used to estimate associations between allostatic load scores and affective, somatic, and overall depressive symptoms. Among our sample of mean age 76.1 years, the one-week prevalence of clinically significant depressive symptoms was 12.8%. In models adjusting for demographic, socioeconomic, and health-related factors, higher allostatic load scores were associated with elevated scores for overall, affective, and somatic depressive symptoms: beta = 1.21 (95% CI = 0.38, 2.05); beta = 0.14 (95% CI = 0.040, 0.24); beta = 0.60 (95% CI = 0.23, 0.97), respectively. Our results suggest that allostatic load measure is associated with late-life depressive symptoms. This association appears to be of clinical significance, as the magnitude of the effect size was comparable (but opposite in direction) to that of antidepressant use. Future research should examine the inter-relationships of allostatic load, psychological stress, and late-life depressive symptoms.

Project description:To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptoms in community-dwelling Saudi adults aged ≥50 years and the associated risk factors. Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ-9) was dichotomized as depressive symptoms when the participants scored ≥10. Risk factors included age, sex, body mass index, education, employment, marital status, number of chronic diseases and medications, fatigue severity scale (FSS), and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Among the 206 participants, the prevalence of depressive symptoms was 17.48%. The number of chronic diseases, medications, and fatigue symptoms were significantly higher in those with depressive symptoms, whereas cognitive functions were significantly lower. Fatigue symptoms and cognitive functions were significantly associated with depressive symptoms. The cut-off scores for risk factors were ≥42 (FSS) and ≤23 (MoCA scale). Fatigue and cognitive impairments were the only risk factors that distinguished participants with and without depressive symptoms.

Project description:BackgroundPain and depressive symptoms often co-occur, but the influence of pain intensity remains unclear. This study analyses the association between pain intensity and depressive symptoms in the general adult German population.MethodsData was obtained from the cross-sectional German Health Update Study (GEDA 2019/2020-EHIS). Pain intensity in the last 4 weeks was categorized into no pain, mild, moderate, and severe. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 8-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8). The prevalence of depressive symptoms was analysed including a 95% confidence interval (95% CI). A multivariable logistic regression analysed associated factors with depressive symptoms by odds ratio (OR).ResultsOf 22,708 participants (51.0% women, 35.1% aged 45-64 years), 41.2% reported no pain, 32.1% mild, 15.3% moderate, and 11.5% severe pain. Depressive symptoms were present in 8.3% overall (women 9.1%, men 7.5%). Participants with no pain, mild, moderate, and severe pain reported depressive symptoms in 2.5%, 6.5%, 14.4%, and 27.1%, respectively. In the multivariable analysis, higher pain intensity was associated with a higher risk of depressive symptoms (mild pain OR 1.8, 95% CI 1.3-2.4; moderate pain OR 2.8, 95% CI 2.0-4.0; severe pain OR 4.0, 95% CI 2.8-5.6). Depressive symptoms were further associated with a Body Mass Index (BMI) under 18.5 kg m-2 (OR 2.4; 95% CI 1.4-4.1), but not with sex (OR 1.1; 95% CI 0.9-1.3).ConclusionsHigher pain intensity increases the risk of depressive symptoms. We suggest regular assessment of pain and further assessment of depressive symptoms in patients with moderate or severe pain.Significance statementOur study found a clear association between higher pain intensity and depressive symptoms in the general population across all types of pain. Further, being underweight was linked to depressive symptoms overall and the highest prevalence of depressive symptoms was found in underweight persons with severe pain. These findings highlight the importance of assessing depressive symptoms in patients with higher pain intensity, especially in underweight patients.

Project description:ImportanceAge-related hearing loss is highly prevalent and has recently been associated with numerous morbid conditions of aging. Late-life depression is also prevalent and can be resistant to available treatments. Preliminary studies examining the association between hearing loss and late-life depression have been limited by subjective hearing measures, small sample sizes, and primarily white populations.ObjectiveTo assess whether a cross-sectional association exists between objective audiometric hearing loss and depressive symptoms in older Hispanic adults.Design, setting, and participantsThis cross-sectional study uses 2008-2011 Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos data collected in Miami, Florida, San Diego, California, Chicago, Illinois, or the Bronx, New York, from 5328 Hispanic adults 50 years or older who had exposure, outcome, and covariate data. Data analyses were conducted from March 2018 to September 2018.ExposureAudiometric hearing loss (pure-tone average).Main outcomes and measuresCenter for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, 10-item version (CESD-10) score of 10 or higher, which indicates clinically significant depressive symptoms.ResultsThe median age (interquartile range) of the 5328 participants was 58 (53-63) years, and 3283 participants (61.6%) were female. The mean (SD) CESD-10 score was 7.7 (6.4). Of the 5328 included participants, 1751 (32.9%) had clinically significant depressive symptoms. The odds of having these symptoms increased 1.44 (95% CI, 1.27-1.63) times for every 20 dB of hearing loss, adjusting for hearing aid use, age, sex, educational level, study site, geographic background, cardiovascular disease, and antidepressant use. Compared with those for individuals with normal hearing (0 dB), the odds of having clinically significant depressive symptoms was 1.81 (95% CI, 1.48-2.22) times as high in individuals with mild hearing loss (median threshold, 32.5 dB), 2.38 (95% CI, 1.77-3.20) times as high in individuals with moderate hearing loss (median threshold, 47.5 dB), and 4.30 (95% CI, 2.61-7.09) times as high in individuals with severe hearing loss (median threshold, 80 dB).Conclusions and relevanceObjective hearing loss appears to be associated with clinically significant depressive symptoms in older Hispanic people, with greater hearing loss seemingly associated with greater odds of having depressive symptoms. Given the high prevalence of untreated hearing loss in older adults, hearing loss may be a potentially modifiable risk factor for late-life depression.
