Standardized Electric-Field-Resolved Molecular Fingerprinting.

ABSTRACT: Field-resolved infrared spectroscopy (FRS) of impulsively excited molecular vibrations can surpass the sensitivity of conventional time-integrating spectroscopies, owing to a temporal separation of the molecular signal from the noisy excitation. However, the resonant response carrying the molecular signal of interest depends on both the amplitude and phase of the excitation, which can vary over time and across different instruments. To date, this has compromised the accuracy with which FRS measurements could be compared, which is a crucial factor for practical applications. Here, we utilize a data processing procedure that overcomes this shortcoming while preserving the sensitivity of FRS. We validate the approach for aqueous solutions of molecules. The employed approach is compatible with established processing and evaluation methods for the analysis of infrared spectra and can be applied to existing spectra from databases, facilitating the spread of FRS to new molecular analytical applications.

TUPA: Electric field analyses for molecular simulations.

Project description:We introduce TUPÃ, a Python-based algorithm to calculate and analyze electric fields in molecular simulations. To demonstrate the features in TUPÃ, we present three test cases in which the orientation and magnitude of the electric field exerted by biomolecules help explain biological phenomena or observed kinetics. As part of TUPÃ, we also provide a PyMOL plugin to help researchers visualize how electric fields are organized within the simulation system. Spatially Resolved Electric-Field Manipulation of Magnetism for CoFeB Mesoscopic Discs on Ferroelectrics.

Project description:Electric-field control of magnetism in ferromagnetic/ferroelectric multiferroic heterostructures is a promising way to realize fast and nonvolatile random-access memory with high density and low-power consumption. An important issue that has not been solved is the magnetic responses to different types of ferroelectric-domain switching. Here, for the first time three types of magnetic responses are reported induced by different types of ferroelectric domain switching with in situ electric fields in the CoFeB mesoscopic discs grown on PMN-PT(001), including type I and type II attributed to 109°, 71°/180° ferroelectric domain switching, respectively, and type III attributed to a combined behavior of multiferroelectric domain switching. Rotation of the magnetic easy axis by 90° induced by 109° ferroelectric domain switching is also found. In addition, the unique variations of effective magnetic anisotropy field with electric field are explained by the different ferroelectric domain switching paths. The spatially resolved study of electric-field control of magnetism on the mesoscale not only enhances the understanding of the distinct magnetic responses to different ferroelectric domain switching and sheds light on the path of ferroelectric domain switching, but is also important for the realization of low-power consumption and high-speed magnetic random-access memory utilizing these materials.

Two-photon voltmeter for measuring a molecular electric field.

Project description:We present a new approach for determining the strength of the dipolar solute-induced reaction field, along with the ground- and excited-state electrostatic dipole moments and polarizability of a solvated chromophore, using exclusively one-photon and two-photon absorption measurements. We verify the approach on two benchmark chromophores N,N-dimethyl-6-propionyl-2-naphthylamine (prodan) and coumarin 153 (C153) in a series of toluene/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mixtures and find that the experimental values show good quantitative agreement with literature and our quantum-chemical calculations. Our results indicate that the reaction field varies in a surprisingly broad range, 0-10(7) V cm(-1) , and that at close proximity, on the order of the chromophore radius, the effective dielectric constant of the solute-solvent system displays a unique functional dependence on the bulk dielectric constant, offering new insight into the close-range molecular interaction.

Electric-field-controlled phase transition in a 2D molecular layer.

Project description:Self-assembly of organic molecules is a mechanism crucial for design of molecular nanodevices. We demonstrate unprecedented control over the self-assembly, which could allow switching and patterning at scales accessible by lithography techniques. We use the scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to induce a reversible 2D-gas-solid phase transition of copper phthalocyanine molecules on technologically important silicon surface functionalized by a metal monolayer. By means of ab-initio calculations we show that the charge transfer in the system results in a dipole moment carried by the molecules. The dipole moment interacts with a non-uniform electric field of the STM tip and the interaction changes the local density of molecules. To model the transition, we perform kinetic Monte Carlo simulations which reveal that the ordered molecular structures can form even without any attractive intermolecular interaction.

Ab Initio Design of Molecular Qubits with Electric Field Control.

Project description:Current scalable quantum computers require large footprints and complex interconnections due to the design of superconducting qubits. While this architecture is competitive, molecular qubits offer a promising alternative due to their atomic scale and tuneable properties through chemical design. The use of electric fields to precisely, selectively and coherently manipulate molecular spins with resonant pulses has the potential to solve the experimental limitations of current molecular spin manipulation techniques such as electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. EPR can only address a macroscopic ensemble of molecules, defeating the inherent benefits of molecule-based quantum information. Hence, numerous experiments have been performed using EPR in combination with electric fields to demonstrate coherent spin manipulation. In this work, we explore the underlying theory of spin-electric coupling in lanthanide molecules, and outline ab initio methods to design molecules with enhanced electric field responses. We show how structural distortions arising from electric fields generate coupling elements in the crystal field Hamiltonian within a Kramers doublet ground state and demonstrate the impact of molecular geometry on this phenomenon. We use perturbation theory to rationalize the magnetic and electric field orientation dependence of the spin-electric coupling. We use pseudo-symmetry point groups to decompose molecular distortions to understand the role that symmetry has on spin-electric coupling. Finally, we present an analytical electric field model of structural perturbations that provides large savings in computational expense and allows for the investigation of experimentally accessible electric field magnitudes which cannot be accessed using common ab initio methods.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Cellulose Nanofiber Alignment under an Electric Field.

Project description:The alignment of cellulose by an electric field is an interesting subject for cellulose material processing and its applications. This paper reports an atomistic molecular dynamics simulation of the crystalline cellulose nanofiber (CNF) model in varying electric field directions and strengths. GROMACS software was used to study crystalline cellulose 1β consisting of 18 chains in an aqueous environment at room temperature, and an electric field was applied along the cellulose chain direction and the perpendicular direction with varying field strength. The root-mean-square displacement, radius of gyration, end-to-end length, and hydrogen bond population of the crystalline CNF model were analyzed to determine the effects of the applied electric field on the structure of the CNF model. The results suggest that the nanosecond electric field can induce the orientation of the CNF along the applied electric field direction. The alignment rate and ability to maintain the alignment depend on the electric field strength. Analysis of the radius of gyration, end-to-end length, and bond lengths for intrachain and interchain hydrogen bonds revealed no significant effect on the cellulose structure. Cellulose alignment in an electric field has the potential to broaden the design of electric field-induced processing techniques for cellulose filaments, thin films, and electro-active cellulose composites.

Effects of Strain and Electric Field on Molecular Doping in MoSSe.

Project description:Recently, synthesized Janus MoSSe monolayers have attracted tremendous attention in science and technology due to their novel properties and promising applications. In this work, we investigate their molecular adsorption-induced structural and electronic properties and tunable doping effects under biaxial strain and external electric field by first-principles calculations. We find an effective n-type or p-type doping in the MoSSe monolayer caused by noncovalent tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) or tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) molecular adsorption. Moreover, the concentration of doping carrier with respect to the S or Se side also exhibits Janus characteristics because of the electronegativity difference between S and Se atoms and the intrinsic dipole moment in the MoSSe monolayer. In particular, this n-type or p-type molecular doping effect can be flexibly tuned by biaxial strain or under external electric field. By analyzing the valence band maximum (VBM) and conduction band minimum (CBM) in the band structure of MoSSe/TTF under strain, the strain-tunable band gap of MoSSe and the n-type molecular doping effect is revealed. Further explanation of charge transfer between TTF or TCNQ and the MoSSe monolayer by an equivalent capacitor model shows that the superimposition of external electric field and molecular adsorption-induced internal electric field plays a crucial role in achieving a controllable doping concentration in the MoSSe monolayer.

Molecular Fingerprinting in Cancer Detection

Project description:Interventions: Group 1: Study participants with cancer of the lung, prostate, bladder, breast, head and neck, liver, pancreas, ovaries, colon or with leucimia are informed in detail about the course, risks, and benefits of the study. If consent is given, 10 mL of blood will be taken. Serum and/or plasma samples will be prepared and stored. The clinical data of the patients (e.g. age, gender, smoking status, alcohol consumption, diagnosis, treatment, concomitant medication, comorbidities and family history), as well as the results of the pathological assessment will be recorded in a central data base in pseudonymized form. Group 2: Study participants without cancer (healthy volunteers) or patients with benign diseases of the same Organs are informed in detail about the course, risks, and benefits of the study. If consent is given, 10-20 mL of blood will be taken. Serum and/or plasma samples will be prepared and stored. The clinical data of the patients (e.g. age, gender, smoking status, alcohol consumption, diagnosis, treatment, concomitant medication, comorbidities and family history), as well as the results of the pathological assessment (if applicable) will be recorded in a central data base in pseudonymized form. Primary outcome(s): The primary objective of this study is the accuracy of IMF diagnosis for nine cancer entities, assessed by comparison with all data available to the investigator. Tubulin response to intense nanosecond-scale electric field in molecular dynamics simulation.

Project description:Intense pulsed electric fields are known to act at the cell membrane level and are already being exploited in biomedical and biotechnological applications. However, it is not clear if electric pulses within biomedically-attainable parameters could directly influence intra-cellular components such as cytoskeletal proteins. If so, a molecular mechanism of action could be uncovered for therapeutic applications of such electric fields. To help clarify this question, we first identified that a tubulin heterodimer is a natural biological target for intense electric fields due to its exceptional electric properties and crucial roles played in cell division. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we then demonstrated that an intense - yet experimentally attainable - electric field of nanosecond duration can affect the bβ-tubulin's C-terminus conformations and also influence local electrostatic properties at the GTPase as well as the binding sites of major tubulin drugs site. Our results suggest that intense nanosecond electric pulses could be used for physical modulation of microtubule dynamics. Since a nanosecond pulsed electric field can penetrate the tissues and cellular membranes due to its broadband spectrum, our results are also potentially significant for the development of new therapeutic protocols.

Electric-Field-Driven Localization of Molecular Nanowires in Wafer-Scale Nanogap Electrodes.

Project description:As integrated circuits continue to scale toward the atomic limit, bottom-up processes, such as epitaxial growth, have come to feature prominently in their fabrication. At the same time, chemistry has developed highly tunable molecular semiconductors that can perform the functions of ultimately scaled circuit components. Hybrid techniques that integrate programmable structures comprising molecular components into devices however are sorely lacking. Here we demonstrate a wafer-scale process that directs the localization of a conductive polymer, Mw = 20 kg mol-1 polyaniline, from dilute solutions into 50 nm vertical nanogap device architectures using electric-field-driven self-assembly. The resulting metal-polymer-metal junctions were characterized by electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and transport measurements demonstrating that our technique is highly selective, assembling conductive polymers only in electrically activated nanogaps. Our results represent a step toward scalable hybrid nanoelectronics that seamlessly integrate established lithographic top-down fabrication with bottom-up synthesized molecular functional circuit components.
