Project description:Nickel-based catalysts are most commonly used in industrial alkaline water electrolysis. However, it remains a great challenge to address the sluggish reaction kinetics and severe deactivation problems of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, we show a Cu-doped Ni catalyst implanted with Ni-O-VOx sites (Ni(Cu)VOx) for alkaline HER. The optimal Ni(Cu)VOx electrode exhibits a near-zero onset overpotential and low overpotential of 21 mV to deliver -10 mA cm-2, which is comparable to benchmark Pt/C catalyst. Evidence for the formation of Ni-O-VOx sites in Ni(Cu)VOx is established by systematic X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies. The VOx can cause a substantial dampening of Ni lattice and create an enlarged electrochemically active surface area. First-principles calculations support that the Ni-O-VOx sites are superactive and can promote the charge redistribution from Ni to VOx, which greatly weakens the H-adsorption and H2 release free energy over Ni. This endows the Ni(Cu)VOx electrode high HER activity and long-term durability.

Project description:This report focuses on a novel strategy for the preparation of transition metal-MoS2 hybrid nanoclusters based on a one-step, dual-target magnetron sputtering, and gas condensation process demonstrated for Ni-MoS2. Aberration-corrected STEM images coupled with EDX analysis confirms the presence of Ni and MoS2 in the hybrid nanoclusters (average diameter = 5.0 nm, Mo:S ratio = 1:1.8 ± 0.1). The Ni-MoS2 nanoclusters display a 100 mV shift in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) onset potential and an almost 3-fold increase in exchange current density compared with the undoped MoS2 nanoclusters, the latter effect in agreement with reported DFT calculations. This activity is only reached after air exposure of the Ni-MoS2 hybrid nanoclusters, suggested by XPS measurements to originate from a Ni dopant atoms oxidation state conversion from metallic to 2+ characteristic of the NiO species active to the HER. Anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) experiments on the Ni-MoS2 hybrid nanoclusters confirm the presence of Ni-doped edge sites and reveal distinctive electrochemical features associated with both doped Mo-edge and doped S-edge sites which correlate with both their thermodynamic stability and relative abundance.

Project description:Hydrogen boride (HB) sheets are two-dimensional materials comprising a negatively charged hexagonal boron network and positively charged hydrogen atoms with a stoichiometric ratio of 1:1. Herein, we report the spontaneous formation of highly dispersed Ni nanoclusters on HB sheets. The spontaneous reduction reaction of Ni ions by the HB sheets was monitored by in-situ measurements with an ultraviolet-visible spectrometer. Acetonitrile solutions of Ni complexes and acetonitrile dispersions of the HB sheets were mixed in several molar ratios (the HB:Ni molar ratio was varied from 100:0.5 to 100:20), and the changes in the absorbance were measured over time. In all cases, the results suggest that Ni metal clusters grow on the HB sheets, considering the increase in absorbance with time. The absorbance peak position shifts to the higher wavelength as the Ni ion concentration increases. Transmission electron microscopy images of the post-reaction products indicate the formation of Ni nanoclusters, with sizes of a few nanometers, on the HB sheets, regardless of the preparation conditions. These highly dispersed Ni nanoclusters supported on HB sheets will be used for catalytic and plasmonic applications and as hydrogen storage materials.

Project description:Doping is a well-known strategy to enhance the electrochemical energy storage performance of layered cathode materials. Many studies on various dopants have been reported; however, a general relationship between the dopants and their effect on the stability of the positive electrode upon prolonged cell cycling has yet to be established. Here, we explore the impact of the oxidation states of various dopants (i.e., Mg2+, Al3+, Ti4+, Ta5+, and Mo6+) on the electrochemical, morphological, and structural properties of a Ni-rich cathode material (i.e., Li[Ni0.91Co0.09]O2). Galvanostatic cycling measurements in pouch-type Li-ion full cells show that cathodes featuring dopants with high oxidation states significantly outperform their undoped counterparts and the dopants with low oxidation states. In particular, Li-ion pouch cells with Ta5+- and Mo6+-doped Li[Ni0.91Co0.09]O2 cathodes retain about 81.5% of their initial specific capacity after 3000 cycles at 200 mA g-1. Furthermore, physicochemical measurements and analyses suggest substantial differences in the grain geometries and crystal lattice structures of the various cathode materials, which contribute to their widely different battery performances and correlate with the oxidation states of their dopants.

Project description:Doping the SiO2 support with Co, Ni, Zn, and Sc improves the thermal conductivity of a hybrid PEG/SiO2 form-stable phase change material (PCM). Doping also improves the energy utilization efficiency and speeds up the charging and discharging rates. The thermal, chemical, and hydrothermal stability of the PEG/Zn-SiO2 and PEG/Sc-SiO2 hybrid materials is better than that of the other doped materials. The phase change enthalpy of PEG/Zn-SiO2 is 147.6 J/g lower than that of PEG/Sc-SiO2, while the thermal conductivity is 40% higher. The phase change enthalpy of 155.8 J/g of PEG/Sc-SiO2 PCM is very close to that of the parent PEG. PEG/Sc-SiO2 also demonstrates excellent thermal stability when subjected to 200 consecutive heating-cooling cycles and outstanding hydrothermal stability when examined under a stream at 120 °C for 2 h. The supercooling of the PEG/Sc-SiO2 system is the lowest among the tested materials. In addition, the developed PCM composite has a high energy storage capacity and high thermal energy storage/release rates.

Project description:Plasmonic metal nanostructures are of great interest due to their excellent physicochemical properties and promising applications in a wide range of technical fields. Among metal nanostructures, bimetallic nanostructures with desired morphologies, such as core-shell, uniform alloy and surface decoration, are of great interest due to their improved properties and superior synergetic effects. In this paper, Au/Pd nanoclusters were deposited on the surface of gold nanobipyramids (AuBPs) into a core-shell nanostructure (AuBP@Au x Pd1-x ) through a reductive co-precipitation method. The AuBP@Au x Pd1-x nanostructure integrates effectively the advantages of plasmonic AuBPs and catalytic Pd ultrafine nanoclusters, as well as the stable Au/Pd alloy shell. The AuBP@Au x Pd1-x nanostructure exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity and durability for oxygen reduction in alkaline media owing to the synergistic effect between the AuBP core and Au/Pd shell. Furthermore, the shell thickness of AuBP@Au x Pd1-x nanostructures can be adjusted by varying the amount of precursor. Overall, the catalytic activity of bimetallic Au/Pd catalysts is likely to be governed by a complex interplay of contributions from the particle size and shape.

Project description:Self-illuminating fluorescence imaging without autofluorescence background interference has recently aroused more research interests in molecular imaging. Currently, only a few self-illuminating probes were developed, based mainly on toxic quantum dots such as CdSe, CdTe. Herein, we report a novel design of nontoxic self-illuminating gold nanocluster ((64)Cu-doped AuNCs) for dual-modality positron emission tomography (PET) and near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging based on Cerenkov resonance energy transfer (CRET). PET radionuclide (64)Cu was introduced by a chelator-free doping method, which played dual roles as the energy donor and the PET imaging source. Meanwhile, AuNCs acted as the energy acceptor for NIR fluorescence imaging. (64)Cu-doped AuNCs exhibited efficient CRET-NIR and PET imaging both in vitro and in vivo. In a U87MG glioblastoma xenograft model, (64)Cu-doped AuNCs showed high tumor uptake (14.9 %ID/g at 18 h) and produced satisfactory tumor self-illuminating NIR images in the absence of external excitation. This self-illuminating nanocluster with non-toxicity and good biocompatibility can be employed as a novel imaging contrast agent for biomedical applications, especially for molecular imaging.

Project description:Given that adsorption is widely regarded as a favorable technique for hydrogen storage, it is appropriate to pursue the development of suitable adsorbent materials for industrial storage. This study aimed to assess the potential of Fe-doped carbon nanotubes (FeCNT) as a remarkable material for hydrogen storage. The structures of pure and Fe-doped CNTs were optimized based on quantum mechanical calculations using density functional theory (DFT) with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) method. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the adsorption behavior, Monte Carlo simulation was employed to investigate the adsorption of hydrogen molecules on FeCNT. The study specifically examined the impact of temperature, pressure, and hydrogen mole percentage on the adsorption capacity of FeCNT. The findings indicated that the uptake of hydrogen increased as the pressure increased, and when the pressure exceeded 5 MPa, FeCNT reached a state of near saturation. At room temperature and pressures of 1 and 5 MPa, the hydrogen capacities of FeCNT were determined to be 1.53 and 6.92 wt%, respectively. The radial distribution function diagrams confirmed the formation of a one-layer adsorption phase at pressures below 5 MPa. A comparison of the temperature dependence of hydrogen adsorption between FeCNT and pure CNT confirmed the effectiveness of Fe doping in hydrogen storage up to room temperature. FeCNT exhibited a greater reduction in initial hydrogen capacity at temperatures above room temperature. To evaluate the safety of the system, the use of N2 as a dilution agent was investigated by examining the hydrogen uptake of FeCNT from pure and H2/N2 mixtures at 300 K. The results showed that the addition of N2 to the environment had no significant effect on FeCNT hydrogen storage at pressures below 4 MPa. Furthermore, the study of H2 selectivity from the H2/N2 mixture indicated that FeCNT demonstrated a preference for adsorbing H2 over a wide range of bulk mole fractions at pressures of 4 and 5 MPa, suggesting that these pressures could be considered optimal. Under these conditions, Fe doping can offer an efficient and selective adsorption surface for hydrogen storage.

Project description:As an emerging class of nanomaterial, nanoclusters hold great potential for biomedical applications due to their unique sizes and related properties. Herein, we prepared a (64)Cu doped gold nanocluster ((64)CuAuNC, hydrodynamic size: 4.2 ± 0.5 nm) functionalized with AMD3100 (or Plerixafor) for targeted positron emission tomography (PET) imaging of CXCR4, an up-regulated receptor on primary tumor and lung metastasis in a mouse 4T1 orthotopic breast cancer model. The preparation of targeted (64)CuAuNCs-AMD3100 (4.5 ± 0.4 nm) was done via one-step reaction with controlled conjugation of AMD3100 and specific activity, as well as improved colloid stability. In vivo pharmacokinetic evaluation showed favorable organ distribution and significant renal and fecal clearance within 48 h post injection. The expression of CXCR4 in tumors and metastasis was characterized by immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis. PET imaging with (64)CuAuNCs-AMD3100 demonstrated sensitive and accurate detection of CXCR4 in engineered tumors expressing various levels of the receptor, while competitive receptor blocking studies confirmed targeting specificity of the nanoclusters. In contrast to nontargeted (64)CuAuNCs and (64)Cu-AMD3100 alone, the targeted (64)CuAuNCs-AMD3100 detected up-regulated CXCR4 in early stage tumors and premetastatic niche of lung earlier and with greater sensitivity. Taken together, we believe that (64)CuAuNCs-AMD3100 could serve as a useful platform for early and accurate detection of breast cancer and metastasis providing an essential tool to guide the treatment.
