Project description:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a critical polymer platform molecule that can potentially replace terephthalic acid, coupled hydrogen coproduction holds great prospects via electrolysis. However, the electrosynthesis of FDCA faces challenges in product separation from complex electrolytes and unclear electrochemical and nonelectrochemical reactions during the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation. Herein, an electrochemical/chemical integrated system of alkaline HMF-H2O co-electrolysis is proposed, achieving distillation-free synthesis of high-purity FDCA by acidic separation/purification and hydrogen coproduction. This system achieves ampere-level current densities of 812 and 1290 mA cm-2 at potentials of 1.50 and 1.60 V, with nearly 100% FDCA yield and HMF conversion in only 6 min at 1.50 V. The electrooxidation of HMF involves a coupling of electrochemical and nonelectrochemical reactions, wherein the aldehyde group is dehydrogenated and oxidized, followed by dehydrated and oxidized of the hydroxyl group, ultimately forming FDCA. Concurrently, nonelectrochemical reactions of intermolecular electron transfer occur in HMF and aldehyde group-containing intermediates.

Project description:Green hydrogen produced by water splitting using renewable electricity is essential to achieve net-zero carbon emissions. Present water electrolysis technologies are uncompetitive with low-cost grey hydrogen produced from fossil fuels, limiting their scale-up potential. Disruptive processes that decouple the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions and produce them in separate cells or different stages emerge as a prospective route to reduce system cost by enabling operation without expensive membranes and sealing components. Some of these processes divide the hydrogen or oxygen evolution reactions into electrochemical and chemical sub-reactions, enabling them to achieve high efficiency. However, high efficiency has been demonstrated only in a batch process with thermal swings that present operational challenges. This work introduces a breakthrough process that produces hydrogen and oxygen in separate cells and supports continuous operation in a membraneless system. We demonstrate high faradaic and electrolytic efficiency and high rate operation in a near-neutral electrolyte of NaBr in water, whereby bromide is electro-oxidized to bromate concurrent with hydrogen evolution in one cell, and bromate is chemically reduced to bromide in a catalytic reaction that evolves oxygen in another cell. This process may lead the way to high-efficiency membraneless water electrolysis that overcomes the limitations of century-old membrane electrolysis.

Project description:Electrocatalytic urea wastewater treatment technology has emerged as a promising method for environmental remediation. However, the realization of highly efficient and scalable electrocatalytic urea wastewater treatment (SEUWT) is still an enormous challenge. Herein, through regulating the adsorption behavior of urea functional groups, the efficient SEUWT coupled hydrogen production is realized in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE). Density functional theory calculations indicate that self-driven electron transfer at the heterogeneous interface (NiO/Co3O4) can induce charge redistribution, resulting in electron-rich NiO and electron-deficient Co3O4, which are superior to adsorbing C=O (electron-withdrawing group) and -NH2 (electron-donating group), respectively, regulating the adsorption behavior of urea molecule and accelerating the reaction kinetics of urea oxidation. This viewpoint is further verified by temperature-programmed desorption experiments. The SEUWT coupled hydrogen production in AEMWE assembled with NiO/Co3O4 (anode) and NiCoP (cathode) can continuously treat urea wastewater at an initial current density of 600 mA cm-2, with the average urea treatment efficiency about 53%. Compared with overall water splitting, the H2 production rate (8.33 mmol s-1) increases by approximately 3.5 times. This work provides a cost-effective strategy for scalable purifying urea-rich wastewater and energy-saving hydrogen production.

Project description:Solar-to-hydrogen photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) have been proposed as a means of converting sunlight into H2 fuel. However, in traditional PECs, the oxygen evolution reaction and the hydrogen evolution reaction are coupled, and so the rate of both of these is limited by the photocurrents that can be generated from the solar flux. This in turn leads to slow rates of gas evolution that favor crossover of H2 into the O2 stream and vice versa, even through ostensibly impermeable membranes such as Nafion. Herein, we show that the use of the electron-coupled-proton buffer (ECPB) H3PMo12O40 allows solar-driven O2 evolution from water to proceed at rates of over 1 mA cm(-2) on WO3 photoanodes without the need for any additional electrochemical bias. No H2 is produced in the PEC, and instead H3PMo12O40 is reduced to H5PMo12O40. If the reduced ECPB is subjected to a separate electrochemical reoxidation, then H2 is produced with full overall Faradaic efficiency.

Project description:The efficient removal of gas bubbles in (photo)electrochemical gas evolution reactions is an important but underexplored issue. Conventionally, researchers have attempted to impart bubble-repellent properties (so-called superaerophobicity) to electrodes by controlling their microstructures. However, conventional approaches have limitations, as they are material specific, difficult to scale up, possibly detrimental to the electrodes' catalytic activity and stability, and incompatible with photoelectrochemical applications. To address these issues, we report a simple strategy for the realization of superaerophobic (photo)electrodes via the deposition of hydrogels on a desired electrode surface. For a proof-of-concept demonstration, we deposited a transparent hydrogel assembled from M13 virus onto (photo)electrodes for a hydrogen evolution reaction. The hydrogel overlayer facilitated the elimination of hydrogen bubbles and substantially improved the (photo)electrodes' performances by maintaining high catalytic activity and minimizing the concentration overpotential. This study can contribute to the practical application of various types of (photo)electrochemical gas evolution reactions.

Project description:Catalyst-driven electrolysis of water is considered as a "cleanest" way for hydrogen production. Finding cheap and abundant catalysts is critical to the large-scale implementation of the technology. Two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides nanostructures have attracted increasing attention because of their catalytic performances in water electrolysis. In this work, we systematically investigate the hydrogen evolution reduction of metal dichalcogenides monolayers based on density-functional-theory calculations. We find that metal disulfide monolayers show better catalytic performance on hydrogen production than other metal dichalcogenides. We show that their hydrogen evolution reduction strongly depends on the hydrogen coverage and the catalytic performance reduces with the increment of coverage because of hydrogenation-induced lower conductivity. We further show that the catalytic performance of vanadium disulfide monolayer is comparable to that of Pt at lower hydrogen coverage and the performance at higher coverage can be improved by hybridizing with conducting nanomaterials to enhance conductivity. These metal disulfide monolayers with lower overpotentials may apply to water electrolysis for hydrogen production.

Project description:Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is electrochemically produced via oxygen (O2) reduction on a carbon cathode surface. In order to enhance the production of H2O2, anodic loss pathways, which significantly reduce the overall H2O2 production rate, should be inhibited. In this study, we investigate the effects of organic electron donors (i.e., typical chemical contaminants) on the anodic loss pathways of H2O2 in a single-cell electrochemical reactor that employs an anode composed of TiO2 over-coated on a mixed-metal oxide ohmic contact catalyst, Ir0.7Ta0.3O2, deposited on a Ti-metal that is coupled with a graphite rod cathode in a sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) electrolyte that is saturated with oxygen (O2). Organic electron donors are shown to enhance the electrochemical production of H2O2, while simultaneously undergoing oxidative degradation. The observed positive effect of organic electron donors on the electrochemical production of H2O2 is due in part to a preferential adsorption of organic substrates on the TiO2 outer layer of the anode. The sorption of the organic electron donors inhibits the formation of surficial titanium hydroperoxo species ([bond, triple bond]Ti-OOH) on the anode surface. The organic sorbates also act as scavengers of surface-bound hydroxyl radical [bond, triple bond]Ti-OH. As a result, the decomposition of H2O2 on the anode surface is significantly reduced. The cathodic production rate of H2O2 at low pH is enhanced due to proton coupled electron transfer (PCET) to O2, while the anodic decomposition of H2O2 is inhibited due to electrostatic interactions between negatively-charged organic substrates and a positively-charged outer surface of the anode (TiO2 pHzpc = 5.8) at low pH.

Project description:The extraordinary potential of hydrogen as a clean and sustainable fuel has sparked the interest of the scientific community to find environmentally friendly methods for its production. Biological catalysts are the most attractive solution, as they usually operate under mild conditions and do not produce carbon-containing byproducts. Hydrogenases promote reversible proton reduction to hydrogen in a variety of anoxic bacteria and algae, displaying unparallel catalytic performances. Attempts to use these sophisticated enzymes in scalable hydrogen production have been hampered by limitations associated with their production and stability. Inspired by nature, significant efforts have been made in the development of artificial systems able to promote the hydrogen evolution reaction, via either electrochemical or light-driven catalysis. Starting from small-molecule coordination compounds, peptide- and protein-based architectures have been constructed around the catalytic center with the aim of reproducing hydrogenase function into robust, efficient, and cost-effective catalysts. In this review, we first provide an overview of the structural and functional properties of hydrogenases, along with their integration in devices for hydrogen and energy production. Then, we describe the most recent advances in the development of homogeneous hydrogen evolution catalysts envisioned to mimic hydrogenases.

Project description:The dehydrogenation reaction of bioderived ethanol is of particular interest for the synthesis of fuels and value-added chemicals. However, this reaction historically suffered from high energy consumption (>260 °C or >0.8 V) and low efficiency. Herein, the efficient conversion of alcohol to hydrogen and aldehyde is achieved by integrating the thermal dehydrogenation reaction with electrochemical hydrogen transfer at low temperature (120 °C) and low voltage (0.06 V), utilizing a bifunctional catalyst (Ru/C) with both thermal-catalytic and electrocatalytic activities. Specifically, the coupled electrochemical hydrogen separation procedure can serve as electrochemical hydrogen pumps, which effectively promote the equilibrium of ethanol dehydrogenation toward hydrogen and acetaldehyde production and simultaneously purifies hydrogen at the cathode. By utilizing this strategy, we achieved boosted hydrogen and acetaldehyde yields of 1,020 mmol g-1 h-1 and 1,185 mmol g-1 h-1, respectively, which are threefold higher than the exclusive ethanol thermal dehydrogenation. This work opens up a prospective route for the high-efficiency production of hydrogen and acetaldehyde via coupled thermal-electrocatalysis.

Project description:The utilisation of insect meal-based fish feed as a substitute for conventional fish meal-based fish feed is considered as a promising innovative alternative to boost circularity in aquaculture and aquaponics. Basic research on its use in aquaponics is limited. So far, no reports on the effects of fish waste water, derived from a recirculating aquaculture system using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) meal-based diets, were available on the growth performance of lettuce. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the effect of reusing fish waste water from tilapia culture (as a base for the nutrient solution) fed with a fish meal-based diet (FM) and a BSF meal-based diet on resource use and lettuce growth in decoupled aquaponic systems. A conventional hydroponics nutrient solution (HP) served as control, and inorganic fertilisers were added to all nutrient solutions to reach comparable target concentrations. The experiment was conducted in a controlled climate chamber in nine separate hydroponics units, three per treatment. Lettuce fresh and dry weight, number of leaves, relative leaf chlorophyll concentration, water consumption, and the usage of inorganic fertilisers were measured. Micro- and macronutrients in the nutrient solutions were monitored in time series. Similar lettuce yield was seen in all treatments, with no significant effects on fresh and dry weight, the number of leaves, and relative chlorophyll values. Water use per plant was also similar between treatments, while the amount of total inorganic fertiliser required was 32% lower in FM and BSF compared to HP. Higher sodium concentrations were found in the FM nutrient solutions compared to BSF and HP. The results confirm that BSF-based diet is a promising alternative to FM-based diet in aquaponics with no negative effects on lettuce growth. Additionally, BSF-based diet might be beneficial in intensive, professional aquaponics applications due to the lower sodium concentration in the nutrient solution.
