Carbon Nanostructure/Zeolite Y Composites as Supports for Monometallic and Bimetallic Hydrocracking Catalysts.

Project description:In this study, we examine the effect of integrating different carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, CNTs, graphene nanoplatelets, GNPs) into Ni- and Ni-W-based bi-functional catalysts for hydrocracking of heptane performed at 400 °C. The effect of varying the SiO2/Al2O3 ratio of the zeolite Y support (between 5 and 30) on the heptane conversion is also studied. The results show that the activity, in terms of heptane conversion, followed the order CNT/Ni-ZY5 (92%) > GNP/Ni-ZY5 (89%) > CNT/Ni-W-ZY30 (86%) > GNP/Ni-W-ZY30 (85%) > CNT/Ni-ZY30 (84%) > GNP/Ni-ZY30 (83%). Thus, the CNT-based catalysts exhibited slightly higher heptane conversion as compared to the GNP-based ones. Furthermore, bimetallic (Ni-W) catalysts possessed higher BET surface areas (725 m2/g for CNT/Ni-W-ZY30 and 612 m2/g for CNT/Ni-ZY30) and exhibited enhanced hydrocracking activity as compared to the monometallic (Ni) catalyst with the same zeolite support and type of carbon structure. It was also shown that CNT-based catalysts possessed higher regeneration capability than their GNP-based counterparts due to the slightly higher thermal stability of the CVD-grown CNTs.

Hierarchical nano zeolite-Y hydrocracking composite fibers with highly efficient hydrocracking capability.

Project description:In this work, a hydrocracking catalyst, nano zeolite Y-NiO-WO3 is reshaped into nanofibrous form. This novel composite fiber show good mechanical strength together with a uniform elemental distribution for both the acidic and hydrogenation components as confirmed through scanning transmission electron microscopy. The catalyst is tested for n-heptane hydrocracking in a continuous flow fixed-bed reactor at reaction temperatures of 350 °C and 400 °C with a time on stream of 180 minutes. The fibers produced from nano zeolite-Y show superior performance with a total conversion of 98.81 wt% and 96.8 wt% at 350 °C and 400 °C respectively. In addition, a low amount of coke (0.40 wt% and 1.05 wt% at 350 °C and 400 °C respectively) was formed with the nano zeolite Y fibers. This superior performance is related to the enhanced accessibility due to the nanofiber shape where the non-woven mesh/network of catalytic fibers prevents the agglomeration of the nanoparticles. Agglomeration is a major cause of hindered accessibility of the reactants to the catalyst active sites. The zeolite particle size, and the shape of the fibrous catalyst, together with its mesoporous character (as confirmed through BET analysis) enhances diffusion and improves accessibility for the reactants to react on the catalytic active sites as proven by the high total n-heptane conversions and high hexane and iso hexane selectivity for n-heptane hydrocracking.

Hydrodemethoxylation/Dealkylation on Bifunctional Nanosized Zeolite Beta.

Project description:Mono-, and bimetallic Ni-, Ru-, and Pt-modified nanosized Beta zeolite catalysts were prepared by the post synthesis method and characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, HRTEM microscopy, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR-TGA), ATR FT-IR spectroscopy, and by solid-state MAS-NMR spectroscopy. The presence of nanosized nickel-oxide, ruthenium-oxide, and platinum species was detected on the catalysts. The presence of Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, and incorporation of nickel ions into zeolite lattice was proven by FT-IR of adsorbed pyridine. The structural changes in the catalyst matrix were investigated by solid state NMR spectroscopy. The catalysts were used in a gas-phase hydrodemethoxylation and dealkylation of 2-methoxy-4-propylphenol as a lignin derivative molecule for phenol synthesis.

Study on the Effect of Structure and Acidity of Hydrocracking Catalyst Support on the Selectivity of Middle Distillate.

Project description:Hydrocracking has become the main technology for producing diesel fuel in many refineries, the key process to meeting new product specifications as environmental regulations for transportation fuels become more stringent. The efficacy of the hydrocracking catalyst is a pivotal determinant of the reaction performance. This study leveraged high-throughput experimentation to closely examine the impact of support properties on both the catalytic activity and the selectivity of middle distillates. The findings show that the catalyst's activity is mainly controlled by the amount of Brönsted acid sites and the presence of strong Lewis acid sites within the carrier. An inverse relationship was observed between middle distillate selectivity and catalyst activity, highlighting a trade-off between these two measures of performance. Furthermore, the hydrocracking performance index (HPI), serving as a composite measure of catalyst efficacy, revealed that an optimal pore size and strong Brönsted acidity are important for increasing the HPI value, thereby signifying enhanced catalytic performance. The experimental result matches the bimolecular hydrogen transfer reaction, which is essential in determining the hydrocracking performance index (HPI) value.

Visualizing Dealumination of a Single Zeolite Domain in a Real-Life Catalytic Cracking Particle.

Project description:Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts play a central role in the chemical conversion of crude oil fractions. Using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) we investigate the chemistry of one fresh and two industrially deactivated (ECAT) FCC catalysts at the single zeolite domain level. Spectro-microscopic data at the Fe L3 , La M5 , and Al K X-ray absorption edges reveal differing levels of deposited Fe on the ECAT catalysts corresponding with an overall loss in tetrahedral Al within the zeolite domains. Using La as a localization marker, we have developed a novel methodology to map the changing Al distribution of single zeolite domains within real-life FCC catalysts. It was found that significant changes in the zeolite domain size distributions as well as the loss of Al from the zeolite framework occur. Furthermore, inter- and intraparticle heterogeneities in the dealumination process were observed, revealing the complex interplay between metal-mediated pore accessibility loss and zeolite dealumination.

Supported Lanthanum Borohydride Catalyzes CH Borylation Inside Zeolite Micropores.

Project description:The zeolite-supported lanthanide La(BH4 )x -HY30 catalyzes C-H borylation of benzene with pinacolborane (HBpin), providing a complementary approach to precious, late transition metal-catalyzed borylations. The reactive catalytic species are generated from La grafted at the Brønsted acid sites (BAS) in micropores of the zeolite, whereas silanoate- and aluminoate-grafted sites are inactive under the reaction conditions. During typical catalytic borylations, conversion to phenyl pinacolborane (PhBpin) is zero-order in HBpin concentration. A turnover number (TON) of 167 is accessed by capping external silanols, selectively grafting at BAS sites, and adding HBpin slowly to the reaction.

Comparison of Iridium(I) Catalysts in Temperature Mediated Hydrogen Isotope Exchange Reactions.

Project description:The reactivity and selectivity of iridium(I) catalysed hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) reactions can be varied by using wide range of reaction temperatures. Herein, we have done a detailed comparison study with common iridium(I) catalysts (1-6) which will help us to understand and optimize the approaches of either high selectivity or maximum deuterium incorporation. We have demonstrated that the temperature window for these studied iridium(I) catalysts is surprisingly very broad. This principle was further proven in some HIE reactions on complex drug molecules.

Cyclic metal(oid) clusters control platinum-catalysed hydrosilylation reactions: from soluble to zeolite and MOF catalysts.

Project description:The Pt-catalysed addition of silanes to functional groups such as alkenes, alkynes, carbonyls and alcohols, i.e. the hydrosilylation reaction, is a fundamental transformation in industrial and academic chemistry, often claimed as the most important application of Pt catalysts in solution. However, the exact nature of the Pt active species and its mechanism of action is not well understood yet, particularly regarding regioselectivity. Here, experimental and computational studies together with an ad hoc graphical method show that the hydroaddition of alkynes proceeds through Pt-Si-H clusters of 3-5 atoms (metal(oid) association) in parts per million amounts (ppm), which decrease the energy of the transition state and direct the regioselectivity of the reaction. Based on these findings, new extremely-active (ppm) microporous solid catalysts for the hydrosilylation of alkynes, alkenes and alcohols have been developed, paving the way for more environmentally-benign industrial applications.

Production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel by Hydrocracking of n-Heptadecane Using Pt-Supported Y-Zeolite-Al2O3 Composite Catalysts.

Project description:Hydrocracking of fat or Fischer-Tropsch (FT) wax from biomass to produce the jet fuel of sustainable aviation fuel has been one of the key reactions. n-Heptadecane, which is one of the model diesel fractions produced from fat or FT wax, has hardly been used for hydrocracking of hydrocarbon for jet fuel production, while n-hexadecane has often been used as one of the model compounds for this reaction. In the present study, a HY-zeolite (50 wt %, SiO2/Al2O3 = 100)-Al2O3 (50 wt %) composite-supported Pt (0.5 wt %) catalyst [0.5Pt/Y(100)35A] was tested for hydrocracking of n-heptadecane using a fixed-bed flow reactor at a H2 pressure of 0.5 MPa, H2 flow rate of 300 mL/min, WHSV of 2.3 h-1, and a catalyst weight of 2 g. Fine-tuning of the temperature to 295 °C achieved the highest selectivity of 74% for the jet fuel fraction C8-C15 with the high conversion of 99%. The jet fuel yield reached 73%, which was almost an ideal maximum yield of 75%. Similar hydrocracking of n-hexadecane has just reported the maximum yield of 51% for jet fuel fraction. Further, 0.5Pt/Z(110)35A, which has a composition similar to that of 0.5Pt/Y(100)35A except for the type of zeolite, could not give as high yield of jet fuel as 0.5Pt/Y(100)35A because the rapid conversion to lighter fractions than the jet fuel occurred by the slight increase in the reaction temperature even at a lower temperature range.

NHC-Stabilized Iridium Nanoparticles as Catalysts in Hydrogen Isotope Exchange Reactions of Anilines.

Project description:The preparation of N-heterocyclic carbene-stabilized iridium nanoparticles and their application in hydrogen isotope exchange reactions is reported. These air-stable and easy-to-handle iridium nanoparticles showed a unique catalytic activity, allowing selective and efficient hydrogen isotope incorporation on anilines using D2 or T2 as isotopic source. The usefulness of this transformation has been demonstrated by the deuterium and tritium labeling of diverse complex pharmaceuticals.
